The Mary Easley Entry

We obviously were busy last week and didn’t have a lot of time to post things on the blog.

(Calling all people who have author access out there!?!?!? Anyone home?)

But, we wouldn’t really be following NC State appropriately if we didn’t at least provide one entry about this Mary Easley mess going on in Raleigh. There are so many articles on the story in the local papers that I don’t know which one to link. (Feel free to link insightful perspectives that you find).

NC State has announced that it will review over 800 employee contracts in the aftermatch of the fiasco.

Raleigh, N.C. — Two high-ranking North Carolina State University officials have issued statements explaining why it was necessary to order a review of contracts granting large pay raises during the past six years.

The issue came to light after the university announced that Mary Easley, the wife of Gov. Mike Easley, would get a pay raise of nearly $80,000, or 88 percent, for moving from part- to full-time status.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors ruled that N.C. State’s process of approving salary increases greater than 15 percent and $10,000 for faculty and staff did not meet the statewide university system’s policy.

“We believed we were using the right approach in the way we were handling fixed-term contracts,” N.S. State Chancellor James Oblinger said in a statement on the university’s Web site.

“As an institution that prides itself on doing the right things in the right way, we are embarrassed by this difference of interpretation and will take immediate steps to ensure that our contract approval processes are consistent with Board guidelines,” Oblinger’s statement continued.

N.C. State Provost Larry Nielsen said the university has “historically … interpreted the Board of Governors’ policy to mean that salary increases associated with fixed-term appointments such as the one offered to Mary Easley” do not need the board’s approval.

University officials will review all fixed-term contracts signed between 2002 and 2008 to determine which need to be turned over to the Board of Governors by its September meeting. Oblinger could not specify precisely how many contracts might be affected.

“It will take a fair amount of labor-intensive analysis, including reviewing each contract individually to determine the nature of the salary increase,” Oblinger said.

No one will every be able to quantify the amount of opportunity cost – represented by misallocated time and money – that this bungling will have on the University. Thank God Jim Valvano is no longer alive or they would find a way to blame him and fire him again.

Of course the one question that nobody has had the guts to ask but we all know is out there — Does Lee Fowler think of Mrs. Easley as “Cougar”?

    Obligatory on any board.

    RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!

Sorry, couldn’t resist. It’s a shame he stood zero chance.

Frankly, we just need term limits. Any party, pub or dem, will be corrupt if allowed to stay in power this long. The Black, Phipps, and the rest of the scandals is just more evidence of this.

Any other option, other than McCain is a vote for Obama, plain and simple! You’re wasting your vote, unless you just want to protest. McCain is a bad option also, but I’ve got more faith in his Supreme Court nominees than Obama. That is probably the only reason I could vote for him because I totally disagree with his positions on immigration.

I’ve lived half of my life in NC and half in SC. When I moved to NC, I thought NC was more progressive and SC was still a “good ole boys’ club for politics. SC has improved, although we still have a lot of that, but NC has gotten totally out of hand with the Eastern Dems just thumbing their noses at the voters, Republicans, and anyone else opposed to them. I’m not sure McCrory is the answer either, cause he’s alot like Bush and McCain, i.e. RINO, but again, he’s probably the lesser of two evils.

Both States, as well as too many places in the entire US, have too many fools voting for fools who continue to take advantage of us. I guess the electorate is the bigger fool though cause we keep re-electing them.

If our admins didn’t see this coming, they must be idiots. Surely they anticipated that this amount of a raise would reach the public eye.

However, this is just another example of a totally inept managment team at NCSU.

I am sure UNCCH has its problems with this type of thing. And I doubt that the N&O would have highlighted it, but our response was pathetic.

This situation just plain pisses me off. If she’s worth the coin, put out something that shows that. This has the smell of total BS. If NCSU can spend that kind of jack on a political appointment, they can kiss off when they call asking for money from me!

ncsslim, I think you missed a salient point of my post. Has the N&O smoked Dem pols? No question. However, all of those individuals you mentioned got toasted by the paper AFTER their misdeeds came to light from other sources and NOT by any investigative reporting by the N&O. At that point, it wasn’t like anything the N&O had to say would further hurt the careers of these already mortally wounded pols. They DO lean towards viable Dem pols as evidenced by their fluff coverage of Brad Miller’s campaign in 2006 versus virtually no discussion of his GOP opponent. In this case, they went out of their way to portray him as a moderate and failed to point out any of Miller’s radical actions in DC (example- the homosexual foreign partners immigration bill) and actively supported a wealthy white lawyer candidate versus a black former military officer with expertise in middle eastern affairs.

Lifescientist, to imply that the N&O was pulled dragging and kicking into their months long vendettas involving Phipps and Black is just wrong. They were absolutely at the head of the pack, and if not so, who was? Also, they are on the Easleys currently, and although ‘RAL broke the NCSU story, they were already entrenched in the European travel stories and have since taken the lead on the State connection. My point was, and it appears you continue to make it for me, that there is nothing they can do to escape the Dem image by those such as yourself. I’m not even disputing that it was probably well earned, but this is not the paper of the Daniels family and has not been for some time. It is corporate to the T.

Furthermore, you may be correct: no one took Vernon Robinson seriously in 2006. If that’s the best the Repubs have to offer in a pretty safe Dem district, don’t blame the N&O on the predictable outcome.

To answer your post in reverse order, does the quality of a given candidate excuse the N&O from fair and balanced analysis of both candidates? This isn’t about the Repubs, don’t make it so. I was just making an observation on the N&O’s predilection to lazy journalism. To answer your question about who preceded the N&O on the Wright and Phipps stories, I recall that state government radio, WRAL, and WPTF were the initial sources. Enough politics (although I’ll be happy to discuss what a miserable paper the N&O is, anytime), I’m going back to Wolfpack sports. The last word is yours.

I’m not politically-minded so I’m pretty indifferent to most of this stuff. With that said, I pick up tidbits because of my job that are at times insightful during discussions such as this. Here’s an example:

Easley might not have a lot of political connections in Raleigh anymore, but one very important connection certainly remains: he’s still best friends with the Wake County District Attorney.

I’m not saying what went down with Mary’s raise was criminal because I have zero insight or knowledge as to the details of the matter. However, political connections abused for personal gain have been all over the NC newswire for the last couple of years. At the forefront has been the Wake County DA prosecuting the likes of Jim Black, Meg Scott Phipps, etc. This situation at least brings to question the back room dealings that led to the raise. Regardless, it’s pretty safe to assume that the likelihood of charges being brought out of the Wake County DA’s office is pretty slim due to the close personal relationship between Willoughby and the Easleys.

Such an inquest would likely require an investigation from the State level and thus more effort than likely anyone would want to give to it. I’m not suggesting Willoughby would avoid this by underhanded means but rather he would be forced to pass the buck to another agency due to the personal relationship. It’s probably nothing that will ever arise, but given the at least somewhat sketchy scratched surface it’s an interesting subplot to how things could POSSIBLY end up with this mess.
