NC State Opens As 13 Point Underdog To South Carolina

Once again, South Carolina will take the national stage for its Thursday opener against North Carolina State at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks have been installed as 13-point home favorites. ESPN will have the telecast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.”The Gamecocks have a decided advantage over the Wolfpack in the experience department,” VI handicapper Christian Alexander said. “Playing on the road in a very hostile environment and facing a South Carolina defense with 10 returning starters, I imagine points will be hard to come by for an N.C. State offense that was less than impressive in 2007.”

Did Vegas set the line before or after it was revealed how nonexistant our homefield advantage is?

I’m surprised the margin is not significantly larger considering all the questions (QB, OL, LB, DB) on both sides of the ball!

I could see State hanging close, and I could see getting the absolute shit kicked out of us. Very hostile environment to break in a new QB. I would imagine this line will go down, as the early money would likely be on the Pack (13 is a high line for SC against pretty much any non-Duke BCS team).

Clemson SHOULD be able to cover a 5-point spread against the Tide, but we all know what Clemson does in pivotal early-season games. (Answer = lays down and dies).

I guess this year is the away version… so our homefield doesn’t matter (I need to look things up before commenting– see, the Doc’s memory isn’t perfect!). SCs offense might have some problems; only 6 starters are back but that may hinge more upon our defense developing. What worries me is SCs defense– 10 starters coming back? 2 defensive starters in 2006 returning from injury? (Hmm, 12 starters… 11 positions)… That could be a good defensive unit.

This is typical Vegas. Two unproven QB’s, two average teams. Take home worth a touchdown and better defense on paper worth two fg’s. In Raleigh it would be a toss-up. As we get closer to kickoff and the the line will drop under ten points.

I personally like our chances, we have some talented guys in the backfield who are gonna make an impact on offense even if the QB is mediocre, and we got some frisbee-catching dogs who can make a couple big plays against a short secondary. If Hill is 80% of the TE he was he can occupy the Safeties and keep the LBs honest. Our front seven will be tested but they don’t have an all-world RB, and our DL will get pressure on whichever QB they choose to play. They have been so bad on offense I can’t imagine they have improved enough to blow us out. I see us losing by a touchdown, due to young QB, but I won’t be surprised if we beat them either.

    Two touchdowns sounds about right.

11 Commandment: You shalt not bet on NC State athletics.

“As we get closer to kickoff and the the line will drop under ten points.”

The line only changes when more people are betting one way more than the other. The bookies want to have 50% bet one way 50% bet the other and make their coin on the 10% charge- Bet $100 to win $90. They are not in the business of hoping the result comes out one way or the other. They will adjust the lines so that an equal number of people are placing bets either way.

South Carolina ended the year on a 5 game losing streak and will be questioning themselves. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to grab a win on the road. They don’t know what to expect from us.

    From LVI story
“And that’s another upset alert for you – East Carolina to possibly knock off Va. Tech as an 11 1/2-point ‘dog in Charlotte. The Pirates, who return 16 starters from last year’s 8-5 team which beat Boise St. in the Hawaii Bowl, gave the Hokies fits in Blacksburg in 2007. Frank Beamer’s team eventually won a 17-7 decision, but Skip Holtz’s bunch easily took the money as a 28-point underdog.”

South Carolina will be darned tough on defense in the first game, no matter what the offense does. They played some pretty hard smash mouth football last year until the D had some key injuries. Expect them to come back with a vengeance and a point to prove. Offense is a different story, but Smelley is a proven QB even if not a standout. 2 touchdowns is about right now, but it may drop.

I want our QB to survive this game, no matter who he is. I think our coaches will have our line instructed to do their job and protect the QB.

The thing we have going for us is an unbelievable set of receivers and running backs. We can go with 4 highly talented tall gazelle wideouts on any play. If the OL can provide 3.0 seconds, we could make it interesting.

I hope we can stop the run this year without having to commit safeties on every play.

    QB’s name = Smelley. I’ll just stop here…

I would so love to win this one. I wouldn’t have to listen to any SEC crap all year from my Hog and Gator co-workers. This is precisely the kind of game that USC has traditionally fallen apart in.

If Wilson is the starter, he could create problems for the Cocks especially with a talented backfield behind him and a all-American tight end in front. USC had trouble with athletic Quarterbacks last year. And then there is that whole Smelley Cocks thing. Can I say that on the internet?

I think it will be basic and boring. Slow and delliberate. Bet NCSU and the spread.

The ugliest fans in American in my book. and this is the liberal afts school! The Pope’s visit a few years back clearly didn’t do anything for them. It will be hostile for sure. They’ve still not recovered from us stealing that game with no time left on the clock! What year was that? 88?
Hard place to start the year, but no reason not to jump right into the fire.

  18. whitefang 07/15/2008 at 2:39 PM #

Love to win any game, but uSC is high on my “love to beat” lists.
Got a lot of friends from there. Those guys have never been a consistant football powerhouse, but you would never know that from their fans. Damn you would think the Cocks have hung a half-dozen NCAA championships to listen to them tell it.
Plus 8 days later I am going to be “South of The Border” for opening dove season and I don’t want to hear their crap all weekend!

Been on here before but still one of the funniest YouTubes. I’ve sent it to EVERY Gamecock fan I know:

Always been a big Spurrier fan. I just love his originality and willingness to be different and not really give a crap what anyone else thinks/says. That kinda stuff is rare these days.

Because of this, I watched all but one USC game last year…and yes at times their offense was clueless (mostly cause their senior QB wasnt really a Spurrier guy…recruited by Holtz)…but their defense was unreal fast and aggressive. It actually reminded me a lot of our D with Manny, Mario, & Co. Very fast and extremely physical.

I think the 13 pt spread is bout right, but if our defense isn’t significantly better it could get ugly fast. Mainly because we just won’t be able to score. One thing tho..if we can move the ball on these guys that will be a very positive sign!
