The State of State Part Four – AD Battle Royale

In previous entries, several commenters had expressed an interest in some historical statistics for comparison purposes. Below are some conference title and winning percentage stats over the last 22 years for the past five Athletic Directors at NC State.

Notes:
• For the 1989-90 season, Jim Valvano was AD until October, Harold Hopfenburg was interim AD until April when Todd Turner was hired. For this analysis, since he was AD for the majority of the season, Hopfenburg will be considered the AD of record for 1989-90.

• ACC championship stats are only for the 20 sports in which all 5 ADs fielded teams (Softball is excluded).

• The win/loss percentage statistics are only for the sports with a win/loss record which excludes cross country, golf and track. Those sports are included in the conference titles.

• W Soccer was not an ACC sport in Valvano’s first season (1986-87).

• Gymnastics was not included because they were not in a conference until 1996.

• Historical data for rifle was not available.

Some Summary Statistics
• Lee Fowler has a lower ACC winning percentage than Todd Turner in 9 of the 12 common win/loss sports. Fowler leads in M Basketball, Wrestling and M Tennis. (Men’s Basketball was on NCAA probation and punitive academic restrictions under much of Turner’s tenure)

• Compared to the previous four ADs, Fowler ranks last (or tied for last) in ACC winning percentage in 6 of the 12 common win/loss sports.

• Compared to Les Robinson, Fowler’s predecessor, 4 of the 12 common win/loss sports have improved their ACC winning percentage under Fowler (M Basketball, Wrestling, W Swimming, M Tennis).

• NC State has never won more than 3 ACC titles in one season under Fowler, a mark surpassed by Todd Turner 3 times.

• As a 1996 graduate of NC State, I was in school for the last 4 years of Turner’s tenure as AD in which State won 7 ACC titles. This year’s State graduates in the class of 2008 will have won 5 ACC titles (including Softball) during their 4 years.

• Please feel free to share any other conclusions or patterns that you may have noticed.

“The younger generation of Wolfpack fans, if you can find any that will admit to it, have the most defeatists of attitudes anyone could ever imagine. ”

Please don’t lump a whole generation together. I don’t hear many fans of any age happy about fball or bball lately.

The younger fans have no idea what NC State is truly capable of when placed in the right hands. I’ve seen it, and I do.

I would not be 1/1000th of the Wolfpack fan that I am today, if I had just started pulling for NC State over the past ten or so years.
I probably wouldn’t care one way or the other.

^^ Agreed SFN, which makes the immature and ignorant posts on the PP boards that much more difficult to read. Like I said, keep doing what you’re doing and we’ll keep reading/commenting on it.

^How could they not have a defeatest attitude? The point is, the older generation knows what it feels like to win and have pride in Wolfpack athletics. This is a foreign concept to the younger generation who have only known mediocre results on the the field. When Bo Rein, Norm Sloan, or Jimmy Valvano’s teams took to the field/court, you had a reasonable expectation of winning and even if we lost, we knew we would be in it at the end. For the past 20 years, not so much.

Glad we have old Wolfpack fans that are so much better than younger fans to tell us how to be a fan. Like I said, I’ve yet to see/talk to a NCSU fan of any age that is very happy these last 2 years.

I would like to see some “return on investment” graphs, because you know what I suspect is the only steady upward trend in Wolfpack athletics over the last 10 years? The amount of funds coughed up by our incredibly faithful and long-suffering fanbase to support both capital campaigns and ongoing operations. I’m annoyed enough as a football-only Pride donor…I can’t imagine how frustrated people are who did the seat rights for both football and hoops or (even worse) hoops only…

What the hell is that all about?

I’m not trying to tell anyone how to be a fan. I also don’t believe that it’s fair to ask anyone to love, or even pull for, a perpetual loser.

  9. happypackdad 06/23/2008 at 11:34 AM #

^ just because a fan isn’t old enough to have personally seen Nat’l championships doesn’t mean they’re less of a fan.

  10. redfred2 06/23/2008 at 10:38 PM #

When in THE HELL have I ever implied anyone was less of a fan for anything???

You need to slow down, and learn how to read my man.

Yes, happypackdad, I said that, and it is a fact plain and simple. You DO NOT have any idea. If you can love the dismal performance we’ve seen out of NC State over the past 20 years, like I loved the NC State I knew when I was a kid, then more power to you. There’s really nothing wrong with being overly easy to please.

I’m not able to find the actual Director’s Cup standings online, beyond this site.

Would someone please provide a link to the actual Director’s Cup site? Thanks.
