Recalculate those numbers from 1993-2008, and the picture is much uglier.

  2. Elrod 06/14/2008 at 7:37 AM #

Actually, I am quite surprised at Wake Forest’s position.

  3. sf59 06/14/2008 at 8:08 AM #

    From 1993 to 2003…. ulgier still 😉

  4. Wulfpack 06/14/2008 at 8:36 AM #

In what way is this picture ugly? Not following…

  5. Dogbreath 06/14/2008 at 9:01 AM #

Since 1993, I can think of only the following:

    Simmons
    Hodge
    Powell
    Grundy
    Fuller

    I don’t count Damien Wilkens

    Dogbreath,

Grundy didn’t get drafted. It is only 4 players.

we had as many guys in the league as anyone in the 80s. I think we had 12+.

SFN: You are correct. I can’t remember the exact year(s)…but, for a few years in the mid-tol ate 80s UNC-CH led the country with the most players in the NBA. NC State was generally one behind. Georgia Tech actually was up there as well.

burnbarn, Same school, same city, lesser facilities, back in the 1980’s when we had all of those players in the NBA. But that was the NC State Wolfpack of old. Don’t forget though, we’ve learned a new offense and ‘evolved’ into something different since those days.

I’m sure the sports media, along with many of the opposing coaches in the league, would tell us that we should take much pride in that.

After seeing these lists I was just checking back on former players too, I’m sure most of you have probably already read this on wikipedia, but anyway:

In 1990, accusations of rules violations surfaced in the book Personal Fouls by Peter Golenbock. Two local newspapers and the NC State student paper called for his ouster. A 1989 NCAA investigation cleared Valvano, but found that players sold shoes and game tickets. As a result, ***NC State*** placed its basketball program on probation for two years ***(the maximum)*** and was banned from participating in the 1990 NCAA tournament. The state-appointed Poole Commission issued a 32-page report that concluded that there were no major violations of NCAA regulations, and that Valvano and his staff’s inadequate oversight of players’ academic progress not the letter of the law.” After this report, Valvano was forced to resign as the school’s athletic director in October 1989. He remained as basketball coach through the 1989-1990 season. Under subsequent pressure from the school’s faculty and new Chancellor, Valvano negotiated a settlement with NC State and resigned as basketball coach on April 7, 1990. Six separate entities investigated Valvano and the NC State basketball program including the NC State Faculty Senate, the North Carolina Attorney General, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the NC State Board of Trustees, and the NCAA. None of them found any academic, recruiting, or financial improprieties. The lead NCAA investigator, Dave Didion, later wrote Valvano a letter saying he (Valvano) represented all that was good in college athletics, and that he would be proud to have his son play for Valvano.

I love this official wording used, “violated “the spirit,…”

Yep, “spirit” has definitely sky rocketed at NC State since the day Jim Valvano was shunned and forgotten.

    redfred,
Reading that again pisses me off again and reminds me of the day when I relinquished my tickets with a big WTF? It really gets my blood boiling – not because of anyone else but because WE (as in State) are the ones who screwed ourselves. No offense to you but we keep shooting ourselves and your post epitomizes our frustrations as NC STATE FANS.
I am ready for some damn football!

  13. sf59 06/14/2008 at 8:46 PM #

^ some on top at State have never had State’s best interest in mind…

Freakin’ Spangler jerk should have been Tarholed and feathered~

Redfred, thanks for reprinting that information. It’s something we should all read from time to time. Though ugly, it is our history. This is why I think it is so important for Sid to succeed at NCSU. Its not just about winning and losing – we need to complete the healing process which is long over due. I’m not overly optimistic at this point, but am hoping Sid can find a way.

  16. StateFans 06/15/2008 at 10:30 AM #

^It’s not ugly. What is ugly is how we dealt with it and how we have been so grossly mismanged since.

  17. redfred2 06/15/2008 at 11:51 AM #

Sorry whitefang, did not mean to rub salt. I just think there are still too many NC State fans who have a skewed view of Jim Valvano because they do not know the facts. Facts are that it wasn’t the NCAA, or any of the other many investigating groups who came down hard on NC State, it was NC State itself. The others couldn’t find enough wrong to warrant punishment.

Back then not only was our competition becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the popularity of a Jim Valvano, but so too were the very folks who had hired him. They were thin skinned and always straining to hear what outside voices were saying about them. They were so weak and so swayed by outside influences, and they knew that they didn’t have it in them to figure out a solution internally, so they just threw up their hands and said “Alright, we surrender, and don’t you worry, we’ll punish our ownselves to the max.” That was rather than coming up with a solution to save all that had been gained over the years, not only with Jim Valvano, but Norman Sloan, Everett Case, all of the former players, and the rest of those that came before that time. They just gave it all away.

Just like present day, NCSU can not handle any adversity. They will not tolerate hearing anything but good things about themselves coming the outside world. They’ll take it from their own fans forever, but not coming from the outside. They’ll do whatever is neccessary to sway that view.

I don’t know when the pipeline was built for funneling in spineless administrators, but NC State has had, and continues to have, more than it’s fair share. You get me someone up there who is honest in admitting that NC State is no where close to living up to it’s legacy, and is in no way reaching it’s full potential, then I’ll change my tune and move on. But not until.

    E..U..R..O..P..E..

  20. redfred2 06/15/2008 at 5:00 PM #

See ya JJ, good luck, we’ll remember you always!

Or until next season starts anyway.

  21. Afterglow 06/16/2008 at 6:58 AM #

I have to admit, I was one of the ones that ignorantly thought JJ would stay. Perhaps with that pipe dream dead there’s hope that BC will emerge from his sophomore slump and rock the basketball world. Good luck JJ.

  22. happypackdad 06/16/2008 at 8:46 AM #

    BC + Ben > JJ

  23. Mike 06/16/2008 at 10:34 AM #

happypackdad, let me help you with your math – BC + Krispy Kreme > Barkley 🙂

  24. Wulfpack 06/16/2008 at 1:14 PM #

Just our luck – Hickson leaves and all three Heels return. Go figure…
