Tudor’s Take on Next Year’s ACC Basketball

While we all admit that it is ridiculously early to start talking 2008-2008 Basketball…but, this is Tobacco Road and that is what we do!

Caulton Tudor has provided his pre-summer prognostication for the entire conference and it can be seen here. The Wolfpack is picked 9th:

9. N.C. STATE (15-16, 4-12)

PROJECTED STARTERS: Brandon Costner, Jr., F; Ben McCauley, Sr., F; Courtney Fells, Sr., W; Julius Mays, Fr., G; Farnold Degand, Jr., G.

If J.J. Hickson pulls out of the draft, the entire offensive equation will change. But unless that happens, the Wolfpack has to hope Costner reverts to the productive scoring ways (16.8 ppg) of 2006-07. Either way, the addition of the 6-2 Mays should improve team quickness and provide more perimeter scoring punch. The bench could be a plus, if Dennis Horner, Tracy Smith and Trevor Ferguson just make average offseason improvements.

OVERVIEW: The pressure is beginning to mount on Sidney Lowe as he enters his third season, and there’s no question that a healthy Degand is the key to the Pack’s progress.

A few bytes for your pleasure:

* I think Tudor generally nails the Pack’s “starting five”, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tracy Smith take one of the starting positions in the post and force either McCauley or Costner to be first off the bench. The ‘loser’ of that battle will be the one whose head gets screwed on the straightest in the off-season.

* IF Brandon Costner ever figures out that he is a power forward with decent shooting range as opposed to a wing forward who just happens to be a little tall (and slow), then the Wolfpack has a chance to be as big of a surprise in 2008-2009 as we were a disappointment in 2009-2010. BUT, this will not happen unless the coaching staff and players exhibit significantly more discipline, organization and work ethic in the weight room and in summer workouts than was executed upon last year.

* Tudor hints to this previous point when he says that the bench could be a plus if the players “just make average offseason improvements.”

* I hate pinning any hopes of success on wild cards, but don’t ignore the chance that Javier Gonzalez could continue the solid improvement that he exhibited in Feburary of 2008 or that CJ Williams &/or a healthy Johnny Thomas could step into a supporting role and make a surprisingly significant impact.

* The likelihood of Williams or Thomas having a chance to contribute early was heightened by the disappearing act that Dennis Horner played last season after a solid freshman season. Again, another player that individually regressed last season compared to Lowe’s first season.

* State will have enough depth, athleticism and experience this season to play a faster pace and to have no excuses for our horrendous lack of defensive fundamentals and rebounding. There is also enough depth, athleticism and experience on the roster for the Wolfpack to extend defensive pressure with presses and more innovative trapping than we have seen in Coach Lowe’s first two years.

* Why doesn’t Marques Johnson go ahead and transfer to a non-Division One program now so that he has two full season of playing? Barring something that nobody saw this past year, he currently sits behind DeGand, Fells, Gonzalez, Ferguson and Mays on the current roster of guards before a potentially strong recruiting haul of backcourt players for next year’s roster.

Tudor forecasts the conference to shape up as follows:

(1) Duke
(2) Carolina
(3) Wake Forest
(4) Miami
(5) Virginia Tech
(6) Clemson
(7) Georgia Tech
(8) Maryland
(9) NC State
(10) Boston College
(11) Florida State
(12) Virginia

* The projection of three of the “Big Four” doesn’t bode well for the good folks at NC State. Especially when one considers that Wake’s program was clearly on a downward projection a few years ago with finishes at the bottom of the ACC. Then their coach died. And, their new coach looks to have them fighting at the top of the conference in his second year? Wow…that’s a far cry from Lee Fowler’s standard of “needing four to five years to build a program” every single time there is a coaching change. Could you imagine how much self-pity and excuse-mongering would be rationalized in Raleigh for at least five years after one of our coaches had unexpectedly passed away? I still hear that Tony Robinson’s suicide in the early 1990s is hurting our program today.

* If everything plays out true to Tudor’s projections then Dave Leaito and Leonard Hamilton will be long gone after this season. If you were to study Leito’s record and performance at UVa and apply it to the standards by which NC State (and Lee Fowler) has historically judged coaches then there is no way Leito would be fired. It’s just a difference in philosophy between NC State and the rest of the world.

* If Tudor’s projections come true then you can add Gary Williams’ name to the hot seat as well. I don’t think it will happen. I’ve seen Williams come up with too much improvement with his individual teams on an annual basis. But, one would be an idiot not to admit that Williams’ program has definitely entered an important period of potential stagnation. He needs a break to the upside.

    t+16 and b — concur!!
My main point is that last year we had one senior. This year, we’ll have 2 seniors, a RS junior, and several other juniors — add to that a deeper bench, and that would be my reasoning for seeing some improvement.

We lose JJ & Grant. We gain Ben & BC back to form, some experience at PG with Javi & Farnold back, & low expectations which can be a strong motivator. Also, the trip in Aug will hopefully help chemistry. 10 extra practices will help the team greatly.

  3. BoKnowsNCS71 05/28/2008 at 2:40 PM #

Is there any new “mix” to the chemistry that was there 2 years ago. With Grant and JJ gone — and with healthy PGs =, maybe better passing, and hopefully better D — then 9 is doable and could be improved on. Assuming all the heads are in the game this year.

  4. Ismael 05/28/2008 at 3:10 PM #

If Ben and BC showup with the form of two years ago i’d kick them off the team. It’d prove they were just mailing it in; sulking.

I also agree that i don’t want Sidney to tell me anything about how he’s gonna fix the team. I just want to see it and whatever he did i promise i will not care.

  5. happypackdad 05/28/2008 at 3:21 PM #

^ not necessarily. BC & Ben work well together. Ben is a much better passing big man than JJ which helps BC. BC was also coming off an injury which affected his conditioning. Ben was playing out of position while at the 4 IMO.

  6. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 05/28/2008 at 3:31 PM #

I saw little in JJ last year to make me care one bit whether he stays or goes. Seems like we had a better team without him. If he doesn’t want to be in Raleigh, fly away big bird, fly away.

  7. Ismael 05/28/2008 at 4:18 PM #

happypackdad (i too am a happy pack dad) – i don’t disagree about your points. With the kind of scorer JJ was, Ben’s assists should have been at least the same if not more. BC should have benefited from all the attention given to JJ. If he was hurt in such a way as to really limit his productivity I don’t think he would have played that much. But the fire of 06/07 that i used to see in Ben and BC were just not there in 07/08.

So if we get two blue-chip 5star players in a few years and “Javy doesn’t feel comfy with them (i don’t think he’s that type of person, just an example)” should we worry how Javy feels about it? Or should Javy get with the program and make sure those guys get the ball and he plays nice with them?

Please pardon me if someone has already spotted and or mentioned this but when I went to the N&O link for Caulton’s run down of the rest of the acc I noticed a nice Jules article that can be found in the last seven days section. (www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncsu/story/1081295.html)
    Note the advice for JJ.

  9. BLUE SUCKS 05/28/2008 at 5:54 PM #

What? FSU, Boston College and UVA are picked lower than STATE? Why?

  10. Fenrir 05/28/2008 at 6:06 PM #

last year after offering insite as to what was wrong with the mens basketball team i was crazy, out of my mind. but once fowler came out and said there was chemistry problems and so on, everyone jumped on board. i was not going to offer anymore opinions as most of you know way more than me, but i have one nagging question. what makes any of you think there is going to be any improvement next year? we still have the same group of young men that sabatoged a season for personal goals and agenda. and we have the same coach and staff that allowed it to go on! if i was the parent of a top recruit i would steer my son far away from that situation. it’s fine to support your team and expect them to improve. but that group of young men didn’t support us fans. they were content with being sub par. they were content with being the only acc team to lose to ecu. they were content to take an ass whipping from carolina, twice!! no pride, no effort, no hustle just large egos. i for one will not watch them do again what they did last year. and my friends pucker up because it will be a repeat of the same. all the pieces are still in place.

  11. b 05/28/2008 at 7:17 PM #

/ If ego was truly the problem, which I think is a little simplistic, then they got all the medicine they needed last year. I think they were largely without an ACC calibur PG in league play, and not as talented as we and most of the experts thought. Chemistry issues just exacerbated the problem.

wufdog-I saw that as well, but I don’t expect JJ to reconsider. I wish him well, though I would love for the Pack to have him back.

  12. john of sparta 05/28/2008 at 7:49 PM #

    agree with b (above).
    ACC is (b)etter.
    pack better b.

  13. Pack1997 05/28/2008 at 8:00 PM #

Has anyone else heard the rumors flying around about the chemistry problems. From what I have heard JJ wasn’t the problem. The problem had to do with certain players and their fiances with other players. However i think we will be better by both Grant and JJ being gone. Just not good enough to make the tourney.

  14. BoKnowsNCS71 05/28/2008 at 8:36 PM #

Blue Sucks — My guess would be that BC lost a lot of players with experience, lost more to transfers also. Self destructing up there.

FSU — I think graduated a lot of exp. players. May be regrouping. Not so sure about them.

UVA lost talent. No reason they won’t find kids to play but just hard to predict versus teams with recognized talent from last year.

But we have all see good teams — underachive or get set back due to injuries. S happens

  15. highstick 05/28/2008 at 8:44 PM #

Heard those same rumors and thought they were biological, not chemical…but then Fouler probably doesn’ know the difference.

Nobody is convincing me that we’re going to improve at all. I’ve got a stronger conviction that it going to take more than a few less pounds on the bodies and one player leaving. If you can’t lose weight during a 30 game season, why would you expect to do so during the offseason?

  16. turfpack 05/28/2008 at 9:52 PM #

NCSU Athletics needs to lose some Foulup lbs to become a better overall program.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Ty Lawson is used to being encouraged by North Carolina fans.

That’s why the past month has been discouraging for the sophomore point guard.

Support was plentiful for Ty Lawson in Chapel Hill until he declared for the draft.

“I don’t think more than five people have said ‘I hope you do well’ or things like that,” Lawson said Tuesday night after his initial workout here at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp. “Most of the people are saying ‘You’ll only be like the 25th pick’ or something like that, which makes me (wonder) ‘Why should I go back?'”

Shoot. I hope we’re never like that. I say best of luck to Hickson, I’d love to have him back but I understand that this is best for him.

  18. happypackdad 05/29/2008 at 8:18 AM #

The PG situation was a huge key to our lack of success last season. It’s the most importiant position in Sid’s offense. Last year we had a true frosh & a transfer who hadn’t played in a long time. This year we’ll have a experienced soph & Degand. A lot will depend on Degand’s recovery IMO. The PG position can’t be worse than last year. Like i said before, I believe the trip in Aug will help this team a ton.

  19. happypackdad 05/29/2008 at 8:29 AM #

    from today’s N&O:

Lowe said the team’s offseason conditioning program had been intense, noting forward Brandon Costner had shed 15 pounds. He said Wolfpack fans would notice another difference in the players, as well.

“You’ll be proud of their effort,” he said. “That’s something we’ll demand of them.”

  20. kyjelly 05/29/2008 at 9:05 AM #

^Lowe says? He always says the right things!^Point guard most important position in sids offense???? What is Sid’s Offense?
Being picked 9th in pre season by a stringer at your home town paper is not something to relish. He also said Sid “might” be starting to feel the heat soon.

  21. 66pack 05/29/2008 at 9:33 AM #

It is hard for me to accept that ncsu bb and athletics has become so bad that some fans believe that a 9th place finish in bb is a positive outcome.damn!

  22. happypackdad 05/29/2008 at 9:36 AM #

    ^Who believes that?

  23. 66pack 05/29/2008 at 10:02 AM #

    sf59 for one

  24. kyjelly 05/29/2008 at 10:05 AM #

It does sound that we should be glad to be picked 9th

The only way things are going to change, is if the fans humiliate Fowler. Boo him whenever his name is mentioned, bring Fowler Harris Teeter Brown bags to the game, etc…

The only thing Fowler’s got left to care about is his name, and that’s the only way to get him out.
