Raleigh Regional – Friday Entry

All NCAA Tournament games can be tracked by clicking here to the NCAA’s scoreboard.

UNC-Charlotte and South Carolina lead off the action at 2pm.

The Wolfpack battles James Madison at 7pm.

If you need more on the Regional then please don’t overlook the fantastic preview that DrBadgerPack put together. (THANKS DBP!)

As we also discussed earlier in the week…there is a lot more riding on this Regional for NC State’s athletics department than just the micro of a few games.

The Gawgia loss is equally as huge. We need to take of business tomorrow. USC has the bats, but I believe our pitching can get the job done.

The atmosphere at the Doak today was excellent, first game I’ve been to with such a great crowd, can only imagine tomorrow will be even better.

Unfortunately some of my fellow students down the 3rd base side ran their mouths in a bad way. I’m all for some good hecklin, but comments like “you’re gonna die alone” and, to the 3rd base coach, “why don’t you get a real job” make us as a fan base look bad to our visitors. One JMU fan, who was being a good sport about it, called out one of students. The student’s excuse: “hey, I’m not a baseball fan, I just go here.” Wonderful.

Baseball fans get a free pass in my book, but I can completely understand the distate. It’s just that the game itself lends itself with all the pauses and built in drama.

At a football game when you here some one well “go on and rip his head off!” it sounds riduculous because that is in a sense what these guys intend to try to do anyway. In baseball, cat-calling and jeering adds a color to the environment that is just plain amusing in my book. It is such a cerebeal game that shouting and insanity of some fans serves as a reminder that tension built up pitch by pitch, out by out has got to be released throughout the game.

But I totally understand that some idiots just need to be marrooned someplace. Go Pack!

    Have to agree with statemech…

Idiotic comments, apparently fueled either by low IQ, High blood alcohol content, or both, make all of us look bad…not to mention unintelligent, as a fanbase.

Anyone who is getting out of hand and is called out for it, then uses the excuse “hey, I’m not a baseball fan, I just go here” deserves to be immediately escorted from the facility.

Ok, maybe thats a bit harsh, but they at least need a good talking to.

Look around, idiots are everywhere. You can’t erradicate half of the population because of their IQ, not in the US anyway. We just can’t keep taking a few embarrassing moments, that happened in Raleigh THIS TIME, so personally. It happens everywhere these days.

    Go Pack!

Off topic, and I’m sorry for the threadjack – but I HAD to put this somewhere …

Let me first say that I HATE the NBA, but I have found two items on Deadspin this morning that have caused a swelling of joyful emotions in me that both concern the NBA, believe it or not, and these items are anti-FLOPPING … That’s right, that favorite Duke basketball pastime of flopping is coming under fire in the professional leagues; Good thing Mike Kerkooskie didn’t take that Lakers job after all – his teams wouldn’t have been able to function seeing as how they are cracking down on the flop up there:

Another off-topic post – but another must-see about anti-flopping and Duke! Contains a pic of Paulus flooping against Nieman in the ACC Tourny game in Tampa the other season

    http://www.east-coast-bias.com/2008/05/new-nba-flopping-rules-responsible-for.html

Oops – I see my comment above is awaiting moderation … Forgive the off-topic posts, but the post above contains a couple of links on Deadspin that are anti-flopping and the link in this post goes along w/ them

    Go Pack tonight 🙂

  8. wufpup76 05/31/2008 at 9:53 AM #

Also, I saw a clip featuring when the NBA might have actually been pretty good and had players who cared about the game – But most importantly the clip features coaching legend Red Auerbach talking at length about how coaches teaching the flop ARE RUINING THE GAME! Pure gold … http://deadspin.com/5011898/red-auerbach-early-anti+flopping-advocate

There you go … Concrete evidence that not only are Mike Kerkooskie and Duke almost single-handedly ruining college basketball but also that Mike Kerkooskie is the root of all evil! MIKE KERKOOSKIE DOES NOT APPROVE OF ANTI-FLOPPING RULES.

AND THEY GET TO VOTE TOO WHICH IS EXTREMELY SCAREY! This applies equally to liberals and conservatives!

Statemech, was the stadium full? Think there would be any chance buying a ticket at the stadium tomorrow???? I’m headed that way tomorrow and might go earlier if there’s any chance to get to the final game.

wolfpup76, I don’t really blame Coach K for that. He only stepped in and refined what the ACC/NCAA officials had allowed Dean Smith to get by with, many, many years ago.

  11. wufpup76 05/31/2008 at 10:23 AM #

That’s true, redfred … You’ve gotta hold the ACC and it’s officials more responsible than any other party … Kerkooskie and Duke were/are just using it to their advantage – good gamesmanship, but that doesn’t make me hate them any less!

    Go Pack! Beat those (Game)Cocks!

  12. statemech 05/31/2008 at 10:46 AM #

highstick, I think you have a decent chance of getting a ticket, they are still selling general admission and people were either sitting in the grass or just finding a good spot to stand at the top of the grandstands.

Being somehwat of a baseball junkie I read baseballamerica.com about as much as this site. Aaron Fitt had some comments on the Raleigh regional in his blog.

    Enjoy.

Tonights THE biggest game NC State has played in baseball since their last super regional game. Getting to tomarrow’s championship game with no losses at playing at home would be huge. Beating a high caliber team like USC to get to that point would exclamate it beyond imagine.

  15. Lunatic Fringe 05/31/2008 at 12:40 PM #

We need 6-7 good innings from Clayton tonight. I think he has proven the ability to handle a power-heavy lineup. I feel we will get our opportunities offensively, but need to hold their bats in check.

  16. ajwolfpack 05/31/2008 at 1:40 PM #

All tickets to our game tonight are sold out. People are outside scalping which is probably what i’ll end up having to buy from.

  17. SaccoV 05/31/2008 at 2:18 PM #

Clayton is really didn’t get any run support this season, until the ACC tournament. Hopefully the boys in red can keep their hitting up for Shunick as his record this year has been skewed. A 2.12 ERA is insane for a Saturday starter. I just hope we can keep this guy for another season.

  18. GAWolf 05/31/2008 at 3:28 PM #

    Is the game tonight televised???

  19. Dr. BadgerPack 05/31/2008 at 6:12 PM #

I complain all year about State’s lack of homerun power and now it’s like someone hooked them up to a generator… leadoff homer for Poulk.

  20. Lunatic Fringe 05/31/2008 at 6:27 PM #

KKKKK – 5 Ks so far in two innings. He has used a lot of pitches so far, but so far so good.

  21. Dr. BadgerPack 05/31/2008 at 6:36 PM #

    A 6 or 7 pitch inning would be nice…

  22. fer06 05/31/2008 at 6:36 PM #

  23. Lunatic Fringe 05/31/2008 at 6:40 PM #

  24. Dr. BadgerPack 05/31/2008 at 6:41 PM #
