Pack loses pitching duel 1-0

Updated: FSU scored the games only run in the bottom of the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly. Down 3-0 in the count, NC State chose to pitch to the best hitter in the ACC and Buster Posey made us pay. The potential #1 draft pick in this year’s draft hit the ball off the right field wall to put himself in scoring position. It was a questionable decision not to put him on first base intentially down that far in the count.

Updated: Today’s weather in Tallahassee has been questionable for the most of the day as a big line of storms moved through earlier in the afternoon. However, the the regional radar shows that the thunderstorms appear to have already cleared the area. There are still showers moving towards Tallahassee as showers are forecasted for the rest of the evening.

The Wolfpack baseball team beat #3 ranked FSU badly last night 12-2:

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In what was probably the biggest game of the year to date, NC State didn’t come up big; the 18th-ranked Wolfpack came up huge. Matt Payne led a 14-hit attack with three hits and three RBIs, and Eric Surkamp and two relievers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Pack past third-ranked Florida State 12-2 at Dick Howser Stadium.

Game 2 of the series is tonight and can be seen on Time Warner cable channel 320 with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. You may have to order the Fox Sports package that costs about $3.50 per month. If you call the cable company, then they will turn it on in a matter of minutes once you order the package(which I had to do last night).

Time Warner for eastern NC can be contacted at: 1-800-TWCABLE (1-800-892-2253)

Right now the Pack is currently #11 and #9 by www.boydsworld.com and www.warrenolan.com respectively. From looking at the NCAA field from the last two years, there does appear to be strong correlations between RPI rating, hosting a regional, and receving a top 8 national seed. Here are the 16 teams that hosted and the top 8 national seeds for each of the last two years:

    2006

1. Clemson, #1 seed
2. Rice, #2 seed
3. Cal St. Fullerton, #5 seed
4. UNC
5. GT, #8 seed
6. Georgia, #7 seed
7. Alabama, #4 seed
8. Oklahoma
9. Miami
10. Texas, #3 seed
11. Nebraskas, #6 seed
13. Ole Miss
14. UVA
15. Oregon St
18. Oklahoma St
25. Pepperdine

#12 FSU and #16 Arkansas did not host out of the top 16 teams in the RPI.

NC State was #17 in the RPI.

    2007

1. Rice, #2 national seed
2. Vandy, #1 national seed
3. UNC , #3 national seed
4. Texas, #4 national seed
5. ASU, #5 national seed
6. USC
7. Texas A&M
8. FSU, #8 national seed
9. UVA
10. Ole MIss
11. Long Beach State
12. Missouri
13. Coastal Carolina
17. Arkansas, #7 national seed
21 San Diego, # 8 national seed
23 Wichita St.

NC State was rated #20 in 2007.

Over the last two seasons, 27 of the possible 32 teams ranked in the top 16 from www.boydsworld.com have hosted regionals. Additionally, 12 of the 16 teams rated in the top 8 for these two years received a top 8 national seed. Note that the RPI ratings used may actually reflect wins and losses accumulated in tournament play. So the correlations drawn here could actually be somewhat inaccurate in either direction.

Dang. I got the TV back in time to watch the last out of the bottom of the 8th and all of the top of the 9th.

What the hell can you do when the opposing team’s catcher (Posey) pitches a 94 MPH Fast Ball in the bottom of the 9th after playing catcher for 8 innings. DANG.

Not much shame in losing 1-0.

Wish I had been able to see it (work.)

Campbell knocks the holes out of the NCAA tournament in the fist round. AWESOME. Go Camels.

Cool people…nice to see real enthusiasm about the other men’s major.

We have a legit shot. See a bit of choke from Heels.

    Miami is the hurdle.

If the NCCA grants 2 Regionals within a 15 min. drive, I’ll see ya’ at Doak.

“..came back and the wife had taken over the TV to watch a DVR’d Grey’s Anatomy.”

Has ever a more effeminate, wussy show polluted primetime television than this show? A bunch of whiny-ass 30-somethings trying to figure out the meaning of life, while they backstabbed one another and f**k each other’s girlfriends. No thanks.

Guys – Tampa transplant originally from Raleigh here (via Charlotte) – glad to see so many of “us” populating the Sunshine State.

    2 Questions:

    1) Is the game on tv tonight? Gopack doesn’t mention it, but what do they know?

    2) Can some please tell me the team is going to stay in Florida until Wednesday for the ACC Tournament? What’s the point of coming back to Raleigh for a day and then leaving to go back to virtually the same place you just returned from? I think how the athletic department handled this scheduling issue might make or break our ACC Tournament.

Heart goes out to the team for the extraordinary effort last night, only to suffer a 1-0 loss. Shunick put on a clinic last night (unfortunately he was matched by FSU’s Villanueva) and may have been as strong as anyone put out there by Elliot Avent in years, IMO.

Speaking of which, Avent is a model of consistentcy with his PH philosophy. I understand platooning positions throughout the year, and he has been somewhat successful with this approach over a span of years.

By the end of the year he usually gives out to whomever is having the strongest overall season (Ferg @ 1B, Pond LF, ect.) But the pinch hitting is ALWAYS the same. Late innings is a virtual lock for lifting players to just get a lefty or righty in. Last night was another good example when he decided to pull Russell Wilson for the lefty swinging back up catcher.

I’m not saying it was a stupid move, conversely you would probably see a majority of college baseball managers do it. But we had men on, 1st and 2nd, and a confident and talented young player coming up who had reached base the last two times up. Couple that with the fact that he would be very hard to turn two on (he’s gets up to first base faster from the RH hitting box then some MLB lead off guys). To bring in in a cold, slow back up catcher to hit for Wilson in that situation shows a precedent that Avent is nearly locked into his ways in late inning strategies.

Again, in no way am I advocating that he is a bone head. On the contrary I know I am one. Go Pack, when this series and mow em down in the ACC’s.

Not going to ever question pitching to a guy down the middle 3-0 with the bases empty in a tie game. Today’s game is huge- a win would make them likely to get a #1 seed, a loss would probably doom them to a #2.

  13. statemech 05/17/2008 at 11:41 AM #

GAWolf – they’ll be on the same station and time as last night, FSN Atlantic up here in NC, don’t know what it is exactly in GA. And yeah they are driving straight to Jacksonville. you’re right there would be no point in coming back to NC, that would definitely screw us, but we are doing the right thing in this case

I haven’t seen the Pack win anything on TV now since early Feburary I think.

  17. Wxwolf 05/17/2008 at 6:18 PM #

Might be a while before we see the game on FCS Atlantic. Mississippi State and Arkansas are in a 10-10 slugfest in the bottom of the 7th.

1-0 FSU early on a Posey homer.

  18. SaccoV 05/17/2008 at 7:24 PM #

7-0 FSU in the fourth. State’s offense once again is missing when needed. I’m really starting to hate Elliot Avent’s managerial style. I thought there was no reason to take Russell Wilson out of the lineup today. He got on base twice last night and stole a base late to put himself into scoring position. Wilson has played hard enough to keep his spot. Close games are going to be trouble in the playoffs, and I’m very concerned that we will come up on the wrong end of a couple which could cost us a trip to Omaha. Whether or not we host a regional is beside the point; winning whichever regional we’re in is much more important, IMO. Elliot’s not a bone-head, but he makes some mis-timed decisions.

  19. SaccoV 05/17/2008 at 7:38 PM #

Top 5, Pond leads off with solo home run. We get the bases loaded with no one out, and can’t get a 2nd run across. Boy, the frustration just doesn’t have any limits.

  20. statemech 05/17/2008 at 7:53 PM #

i’m gonna blame this on the lack of a new entry for today’s game

  21. gopack968 05/17/2008 at 8:42 PM #

Winning even one on the road at FS, after winning the Maryland series convincingly might just be enough for a regional…

  22. vtpackfan 05/18/2008 at 6:40 AM #

Looking at the bottom of the box score and look what I found:

    Eryk McConnell…… 1.0 1 0 0 0 2 4 4 16

I had no idea we had a senior RHP who was drafted in the 10th round in last years draft. I’m sure sure Avent had a great laugh when he was introduced to this guy yesterday.

  23. vtpackfan 05/18/2008 at 7:48 AM #

That came of sounding more ignorant then usual. McConnell more then likely has been a missing man because of practice seesions in an effort to re-convert him into a closer in time for a post season run.

Either Buchannon or Sogard seemed poised to step into the third SP (with the other a spot start starter if necessary). Sogards issue with command in terms of showing up with atleast two pitches he can throw consistently for strikes took a turn south last night. Avent will have to really want a LHP starter in post season for Sogard to get his number called over Buchannon at this point.

Fergueson had the single worst three game set in recent memory. The last time a hitter in the middle of line up of an ACC team looked so overmatched was some time in the mid teens when the pitchers threw spit balls on dirty grass stained baseball. God Spead Pat. Go Pack!
