Spring Game Doesn’t Provide Much to Discuss

…but we’ll open this entry for people to make mountains out of molehills if they would like.

Evidently, it was a ‘thriller’. The statistics can be found here. And, some bullet points focusing on our QB situation can be found here.

The Charlotte Observer’s game story shares a little of the only information that I think is relevant from Saturday — what freshmen are playing key roles that we may see in the fall.

Before the final play of N.C. State’s spring game, coach Tom O’Brien told linebacker Audie Cole to put tight end George Bryan on his back at the line of scrimmage.

O’Brien got exactly what he wanted. Cole leveled Bryan. Quarterback Justin Burke scrambled, and Bryan got up and hustled to the end zone.

He leaped to catch a 30-yard pass in heavy traffic to give the Red team a 23-21 win over the White on Saturday in front of an estimated 15,000 fans at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Cole and Bryan, two redshirt freshmen, showed O’Brien they can make plays.

State had 15,000 on hand for the spring game. Wake Forest attracted an estimated 4,000 to their game and the media is talking about Wake’s transformation into a football school. Amazing.

Imagine if Lee Fowler had gotten his way and NC State would have kept Chuck Amato leaving all of us without the optimistic hope that Tom O’Brien has planted in all of us?

We’d all be scratching our heads AGAIN about how our (lack of) leadership continues to misunderstand the importance of coaching and leadership in college athletics. Unless, of course, they find a way to show us that Wake has stronger fan support and better facilities than NC State. Because, as we all ‘know’…facilities are what wins games.

For a related note about spring football we turn your attention to this entry from earlier in the week.

Lastly, please do not ignore the entry just before this one on the blog – link here.

Does anyone know if the 15,000 for the game is about average for the Spring game, or is it a better (or worse) turnout than the past few years??? Sounds like Bryan made one heck of a catch – especially for a RS Freshman….

  2. statered 04/20/2008 at 10:22 AM #

I was there and it appeared to be better attended than in the past although it was hard to tell how many were in the upper deck from down low. I have been to each game the past 6 years and it keeps getting biger and bigger.

  3. lsutton5144 04/20/2008 at 11:20 AM #

Last year’s attendance was estimated to be around 14,000.

Spring Football is a nasty tease, we still have 4 full months until it starts for real.

  5. dj9686 04/20/2008 at 11:32 AM #

Hmmmm…. I think last year’s was about 14.5K and so we had about 700 more. It was nice and the crowd was into it for a practice game. It was hard to see that catch from the stands. It was difficult to tell if it was a grab or a steal because of the number of players in the area of the ball. The tailgating was great and the dance team, which was collecting military donations, was certainly award-winning in my view.

My biggest concern is the kicking game (both PK and punting). Any insight there?

  7. geojim1990 04/20/2008 at 12:30 PM #

State had 15,000 on hand for the spring game. Wake Forest attracted an estimated 4,000 to their game…

However, WF’s total enrollment is only about 6500 whereas NCSU’s is over 30000. 4000 out of 6500 is approx. 62% contrasted with our approx. 50%.

SFN: I politely posit the retort, ‘So what?’ None of us get the benefit an asterik or adjustment for size when recruiting kids. Most Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC schools enrollment is significantly larger than NCSU (and the rest of the ACC). When they are recruiting kids based on how big their stadiums are and how many people are at their games (including spring games) nobody cares. I hear ya…but, the only reason we talk about attendance at the spring game is because of its value to recruiting.

  8. vtpackfan 04/20/2008 at 12:58 PM #

Cjkowaski should do allright in PK duties. We will miss Hauska at kick off time the most, IMO. The punting should improve as well. Everyone threw our walk-on P under the bus and then piled onto to him (yeah he shanked a few but not everyone is all perfect like Hillary Swank at WFU).

The duties of blocking up front were the worst offense of all when the punt team came out. They were horrifying all year long and I would be shocked if TOB and his staff didn’t take a long look at this crew in order to shake off the worst culprits.

All this talk about Russel Wilson and the QB situation, or RB, or OL and the most exciting emergence unfolding this spring and on into fall will be the MLB position, IMO. Ray Michels has a big upside (in the mold of the great undersized LB’s Amato was always great at recruiting) but true frosh Maddux sounds like a throw back head banger up the middle. If we can find some success clogging gaps with the JC DT transfers and Cash then one (or both) of these fella’s could have a shot of making a name of themselves. Go Pack!

    SFN-
    OK, agreed.
Also, it should be pointed out (which didn’t occur to me at the time) that WF is coming off a few seasons of “success” on the field whereas we are not; yet our attendance holds relatively high & steady. I don’t recall hearing what WF’s attendance has been like during/after lackluster seasons, but I don’t recall it being noteworthy. So, I suppose this just underlines your point.

By the way, the new “click on your name &/or comment to edit it” feature is great. Just in case you’re open to further suggestions, giving the comments comment-numbers would make referencing previous comments more fluid.

Just remember some starters didn’t play because of injury-add them to the mix- I think we’ll be ok.
The QB situation will be solved by TOB- with he and his staff’s past history developing QB’s I’m not worryed very much.
The overall health of the team is more of a concern to me.We need everone healthy by the fall season.
Overall I am very confident in TOB and his staff.

    Here’s Wilmington’s accounts and descriptions

    And Andrew Jones’ “analysis”

SFN: Thanks so much for sharing!! This is the kind of network/community involvement that makes everyone’s experience better. Thanks

I wasn’t there, for those who were-

    Questions-
    1. opinions of OL, DL, kicking game-a 9 yd punt? what about KO and FG’s?
    2. general discipline/poise/self control of the above units and team in general?

“Does every thread on this site have to be a referendum on LF/administration incompetence? Most agree they suck, me included, how about sticking to the teams’ performance when we actually compete???”

    I agree, its getting tired!

  15. agentorange 04/20/2008 at 9:21 PM #

I was at the game and the attendance has to be a total guess. No tickets sold and no turnstiles to walk through. The lower deck was full, the upper deck about full, and several hundred former players in the end zone. A really good turn out that could’ve been better with some promotion. I didn’t see many students.

“Does every thread on this site have to be a referendum on LF/administration incompetence? Most agree they suck, me included, how about sticking to the teams’ performance when we actually compete???”

The AD is not like an individual coach where their effort can be directly evaluated after each game. The AD’s effort is less tangible. If the AD’s performance were discussed only when their job duty was in the direct public eye (during a coach hiring process, say) then there wouldn’t be an opportunity to discuss it very often. I will preempt someone saying that they aren’t arguing that this is the only time it should be discussed, just not every time, by suggesting that perhaps you don’t fully appreciate just how bad our A.D. is, especially considering what he has to work with (not least of which is fan support for their teams). So I, for one, appreciate the message staying out there that something has to be done.

  17. mafpack 04/21/2008 at 6:06 AM #

    GeoJim –

Yes it does, but do we have to talk about him on EVERY thread? Or belittled *actual* events to throw in links to still more threads bashing him?

Sigh, I had intended to do a full write up on a lot of the very good things that I saw at the game, along with conversations I had with many of the parents of players that sat around me and my observations of our newer players and first year starters.

But seeing as the game didn’t “provide much to discuss”, I’ll just keep my yap shut about anything actually related to our actual PLAYERS and COACHES, and throw in one last “Lee Fowler sucks” for good measure.

  18. Wulfpack 04/21/2008 at 7:46 AM #

“Does every thread on this site have to be a referendum on LF/administration incompetence?”

I have to say it’s getting really old really fast, to the point where I don’t read this site nearly as much as I have in the past. I don’t feel this way because I disagree that LF is a poor ambassador for our school, it’s just about what are we going to do? Whine. Complain = Nothing. He’s here to stay unless he goes on his own accord. That’s just the way I feel about it. He has made some blunders and our teams are under par. But TOB will get the football program on track, LF will get his praise from above, and the money will continue to pour in. That is his most important job whether we like it or not. His superiors don’t see this as a problem. So deal with it. And let’s get on with it.

Sorry for the hijack but i was just reading a blog on Charlotte Observer and would like to share some of the crap i found.
#1 EZU fans are as delusional as ever! One guy posted that EZU easily has the best facilities in NC,(what?!!?) and EZU must be an easy sell to recruits. As for our upcoming game this year, they are already counting the freakin W, but they are not sure if beating state even counts toward bowl eligibility. They are talking about how awesome their recruiting is! (as apposed to ours?!?LOL!) Does anyone over there remember the little football contest in Greenville just last season? You bunch of STUPIDS!

  20. StateFans 04/21/2008 at 8:07 AM #

Guys….we’re pretty consistent in our message that if you would rather see a blog done differently than the way we run ours then there are TONS of free software on the internet for you to run your own blog.

Please drop us a line with the link and we will happily link you up on the right side of our blogroll.

By the way, the new “click on your name &/or comment to edit it” feature is great. Just in case you’re open to further suggestions, giving the comments comment-numbers would make referencing previous comments more fluid.

Thanks. I added that feature 2-3 weeks ago and folks seem to like it.

BTW, if you cannot edit a comment immediately after you initially save it, hit F5 or the ‘refresh page’ button on your browser and you should be good to go.

As to the last suggestion, I don’t see that happening, to be honest. That would be a good bit of coding, and my time is better spent on insuring that the server is up to date, secure, operating optimally and that the site is consistently backed up. Since I have a ‘real job’ like the rest of you guys, my time is somewhat limited. Anything to pass the time through the summer until football.

Besides, I spend a good bit of time in the offseason grappling with Old Man Par. I’m not the golfer that a lot of you guys are, but even with my 16 handicap I still have a good time.

Which reminds me of an idea I have had for a long time. I would love to see this year is a Statefans Nation scramble or handicapped tourney.

  22. Trip 04/21/2008 at 9:39 AM #

For some reason the main web page address isn’t working… statefansnation.com just shows a blank screen. Just letting you guys know… Although, for some strange reason it works perfectly on internet explorer… just not showing up on Firefox.

I’m just glad our quarterback situation is no longer a choice of “Gun slinger, interception king” and “Can’t throw it 25 yards.”

  23. RAWFS 04/21/2008 at 9:50 AM #

SFN works fine for me in FF 2.0.0.14 and FF3 beta. The server is also responding normally and is not bound at all. Clear your caches and try again.

“Does anyone over there remember the little football contest in Greenville just last season?”

    Robopack,

Do you remember the game in raleigh 2 years ago? Or how bout the bowl game that they went to last year and we didn’t? I think we are the bunch of stupids, because how does ezu and all their rich athletic tradition have an AD worth a shit, and we are stuck to deal with LF?

  25. RAWFS 04/21/2008 at 10:44 AM #

One guy posted that EZU easily has the best facilities in NC,(what?!!?) and EZU must be an easy sell to recruits. As for our upcoming game this year, they are already counting the freakin W, but they are not sure if beating state even counts toward bowl eligibility.

    Best facilities in NC?

    Okay, if they say so.

    Easy sell to recruits?

The ones that have the grades and the skills to compete in a BCS conference, or the ones that don’t meet eligibility. I think ECU’s best recruiting comes after a few players determine their ability to gain entrance to other schools. That’s not downing ECU really, but let’s be honest, they probably will never play for a national title (ask Boise State or Hawai’i about that) and they don’t have and 80K stadium either. So to top guys, they are kind of a safety school. Call it like it is.

As for our upcoming game this year, they are already counting the freakin W.

Seems I heard that last year, too.
