No wonder Lee Fowler was so defensive last night as discussed in this entry, the news just keeps getting worse.

The men’s teams at the two national powers(UNC & Kansas), which met in the Final Four earlier this month, were included among 712 Division I squads singled out by the NCAA for their solid academic performance. Although the total number of teams publicly recognized dropped from 839 last year, 192 schools had at least one team finish among the top 10 percent of all schools in their sport…..….The ACC had 41 teams recognized.Duke led the ACC with 12 teams recognized. Davidson (14) was tops in North Carolina.

The NCAA gives each player on each team one point for staying academically eligible and another point for remaining at the school each semester, accumulating a total of four points per year. The NCAA then uses a mathematical formula to calculate each team’s score. Those scores are expected to be released in early May. A perfect score is 1,000. Teams that fall below the cutline of 925 are subject to penalties, which include the potential loss of scholarships.

Only three schools in the conference had more than 3 teams make this list (Duke, UNC and BC) while only three schools didn’t have a single team make the list (NC State, VPI, and Clemson). Official numbers for all schools and all programs will be released May 6th.

Don’t expect good news for NC State on May 6th. Unless you consider bad news for Lee Fowler as good news for NC State.

    There’s a difficult balance to find in the world of college athletics. Often you can get an edge when it comes to winning and recruiting by letting academics slide in order to put a greater emphasis on athletics alone. The great schools can excel in both athletics and academics. It takes a true work of genius, however, to do poorly in both.
    If LF’s “body of work” were a football helmet (pre-TOB), not only would he have no stickers on it up to this point, but he would be in sticker-debt. The only thing that would stand out on his helmet would be the $ replacing the Block-S.

    Boy I hope this is not true. I believe the May 6th report will be the first APR with a full 4 years of data. In previous reports, there was a “small squad size” break given for sports to avoid any penalties with an APR under 925.

    I have only heard of one sport at State that was in jeopardy of missing the 925 level (not football or basketball). In particular, I think men’s basketball should have a pretty good report especially in relation to some other teams in the ACC.

    I’m glad to see that good ol’ Lee Fowler has finally had a brief run in with reality, and so much so that he feels he needs to actually defend his own very unremarkable track record. But if was really a problem for him personally, shouldn’t he be trying to explain and defending that same dreadful track record with the people who write his checks instead of some faceless bloggers?

    This is NC State though, so we all know that it’s not really a problem for Lee Fowler at all. The only people that Lee Fowler has ever even heard of that have a problem with his losing management skills are really just a few lunatics somewhere on the internet.

    It’s the same way it was handled with ” “, Lee Fowler never told ” ” that he needed to consider changing his coaching style, that a university such as NC State expected, and should be getting much more than it had a few years back. Then there’s Coach Fowler himself, and in his defense somewhat, there is no one above him telling him that NC State athletics should be advancing and doing much more than it ever have at any other time during in his tenure.
    That that’s were raises, contract extentions, and personal awards come from.

    Then there’s James Oblinger, and…the…buck…stops…right… about…there. I’d just like to hear the chancellor’s his idea of what constitutes a successful university, what constitutes a successful athletics program, what are HIS expectations are for the people that he has under his employee, those people that represent HIS NC State University to the rest of the nation, and finally, does he believe that there is any link between successful athletics and a healthy and growing university in general?

    But, I don’t really need to hear any of that from James Oblinger’s lips. The answers are already out there and working just as the chancellor has been instructing his employees to do for years.

    You thinks it’s bad to look like losers by not showing up on chart about athletic accomplishments? If you really want to talk about LOSERS, how about a chart that details NC State university in general, and those simple minded people who have it clicking right along on it’s path to total obscurity?

    Take heart: At least Lee is vaguely of aware of the lunatic fringe on those message boards. Maybe Oblinger will finally give him some time off to update his tech skills and move into the 21st century of blogs et al. Recognition of heat being placed on him is a step in the right direction. Now he only has 11 more to go…. Of course, first he needs to understand that it is valid – make that 12 steps.

    The 3 schools NOT on the list don’t include Clemson or FSU. Damn we are going down the tubes, athletically and academically.

    So Va Tech and NC State are the two schools at the bottom of the conference in terms of on-field performance (as noted in an earlier entry on this site – hyperlink that if you can), and in terms of off-the field performance in the classroom.

    Not sure how else you can measure success in your athletics programs. I think we unquestionably have the two worst athletics programs in the entire conference… hands down… no questions asked… end of story.

    The problem with viewing financial success as a realistic measure of overall success is that is simply NOT sustainable over the long-term with excellence “on the field, in the classroom, and in the community,” to quote a great man. We have none of that right now, and the financials will begin to plumment if it’s not rectified soon.

    And by then, it will take another 5-10 years for the financials to come back… fool me once, shame on you… fool me twice……..

    God knows if this APR report shows poor standings, with the possible reduction in scholarships or no post season play (not that it would really impact us), how can this man not lose his job?

    Could this job performance defense be a preemptive move on Jed’s part to mitigate a damning report that he knows is imminent?

    This would certainly be unprecedented: our AD demonstrating cunning and a proactive approach.

    ^That’s what I’ve been saying all along. It’s just a group of very ordinary individuals who either hire other very ordinary people just like themselves, or when they do find someone who is driven to do better than the status quo, they don’t have clue as to how to help that person reach any higher.

    The people who are now actually in charge of running a once great university, are akin to your run of the mill, mid-level management personnel at any small manufacturing plant, in Anywhere, USA. And that’s on their best days. They wouldn’t last a week in a format where their livlihood was contingent upon profits from their production of something tangible.

    They have it made, they know it, so they have their wall to shield and protect their own kind from any outside influences. They are very busy each day, continually convincing one another that their’s is an ‘us against them’ world. They’d have you believe that it is the very intelligent, wise and all knowing, university administration on this side, of course with their gullible big money boosters in tow,…and the even more gullible, single ticket buying and unimportant, general public full of wide eyed lunatics, on the other.

    As far Oblinger goes, he’s so strung out about having his name show up on every imaginable board that is available, that I’d find it hard believe that he even has the time to sit there and watch an entire athletic event of any kind anyway.

    Off topic, but heard Danny Green has decided to take his “dance” to the NBA. Maybe Hansborough will rethink his position.
