Major NCAA Hoops Announcement Tomorrow?

I could see the early entry rule changed from one year to two years, but the NBA Player’s Association would have to sign off on that change first:

1:55 p.m. — A press release was just passed out. There’s a press conference at 1 p.m. on Monday here in San Antonio. It’s set up for “NCAA president Myles Brand and NBA commissioner David Stern to make a major announcement.”

^^And, frankly, if you’re living someplace like Norway, $15,000 probably would be enough to carve out a decent living.

Not the Norway I’ve been to…all of Scandinavia is EXPENSIVE!

I second that Ed89. I spent 3 months in Norway back in 1993. It is more expensive than most parts of the U.S. You might do well in Slovenia or the Ukraine, but most of Europe is expensive. If you’re getting $15,000 you’ll be glad Norway is a welfare state, because you’ll be on welfare.

In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the… Anyone? Anyone?… the Great Depression, passed the… Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?… The MAJOR NCAA hoops announcement yesterday… anyone? Anyone?

The NCAA Tourney is good at 64, no need for more. No one ever said the tourney is designed to get the best 64, only that 64 will be playing for the championship.

I think they should take from every conference the reg season champ and tourney champ, no more than 2 from eahc oncference. Gives the reg season some meaning, but still gives some hope to an underdog in the tourney. If the reg season champ wins the tourney also, then the 2nd place team in either can go, based on RPI and such.

Personally, I like watching Davidson and Drake, schools that can play get a shot in the limelight. I would much rather see them than a 6th ACC team like Miami or VT play a 6th Big Ten team.

Forgot to mention the major announcement – anyone remember Spencer Haywood? Back in the 70’s Haywood sued for the right to play in the league. His support was hardship, and the ruling was pretty simple. One cannot prevent another from working and making a living. Thus, in the 70’s hardship cases were allowed in the league. Later, that changed to allow anyone to enter.

They can try to legislate rules to prevent a player entering early, but all it will take is one person wiht one hungry lawyer trying to make a big name to break this wide open.

Having said that, I hate one and done for the players. I would prefer 4 years from everyone, and I think both the college game and the pro game would be stronger as a result. It’s funny, I was watching the UNX game the other night thinking if only they still had Wright inside, would have made a huge difference in that game. When Mr Potato Head got triple teamed, to have an atheltic body cutting to the basket inside to pass to would have made a huge difference. Just having a threat inside reduces the ability to double and triple team. I truly think UNX wins that game with Wright inside, but he was gone. And he is doing nothing in the NBA either except sitting, collecting a big check, probably fathering 10 kids with 10 women…………..wait he did go to UNX, probably scratch that last ocmment.

“If you’re getting $15,000 you’ll be glad Norway is a welfare state, because you’ll be on welfare.”

That’s the point. You won’t be living in a mansion, but you won’t be in a cardboard box. If you made $15,000 a year in London, you’d be begging money from homeless people.

“Back in the 70’s Haywood sued for the right to play in the league. His support was hardship, and the ruling was pretty simple. One cannot prevent another from working and making a living. I’m reasonably certain this is incorrect. As long as it’s part of the collective bargaining agreement, it’s not actionable. See: Clarette, Maurice and Williams, Mike. Haywood’s case was pre-CBA, so he had a valid argument.

As I mentioned elsewhere, technically…the draft is illegal. But because it’s in the CBA, there’s not really anything you can do. The player’s signed off on it, they get to live with it.

It is all true all a kid has to do is file a lawsuit if he is 18 or 19 than they would let him play in the NBA.

  11. Noah 04/08/2008 at 2:43 PM #

If he’s 19, all he has to do is put his name in, since there was no announcement yesterday.

If he’s 18, he’s sh*t out of luck, thanks to the NBA players association.

^^^That’s the point. You won’t be living in a mansion, but you won’t be in a cardboard box.

Got some facts for you Noah — just for fun. 🙂

The world’s 50 most expensive big cities
(The index is based on cost of living expressed in US dollars. Therefore, if the dollar weakens against the local currency of a city, the city becomes more expensive and moves up the index, even if prices expressed in local currency remain the same or even go down.)

Rank (2007) Rank (2006) City Country
    1 1 Moscow Russia
    2 5 London United Kingdom
    3 2 Seoul South Korea
    4 3 Tokyo Japan
    5 4 Hong Kong China
    6 8 Copenhagen Denmark
    7 7 Geneva Switzerland
    8 6 Osaka Japan
    9 9 Zurich Switzerland
    10 10 Oslo Norway

Not sure how you can say $15,000 is a “decent living” if Oslo, Norway is the 10th most expensive city in the World…yes, London is up from 5th to 2nd, but there are alot of less expensive places in Europe to live than Norway. Just saying…I’ve been there and it’s not inexpensive.

Here’s a good excerpt written by a Brit, comparing the two countries:

“Finally every English person’s favourite subject: money. One stereotype in Norway that is certainly true is the high cost of…just about everything. My personal cost of living index, the price of pint of beer, broke all previous records. How does £8 a pint strike you? Hence no gangs of inebriated idiots.

But in defence of Norway, here’s a culture that understands that you get what you pay for. You want to do it on the cheap? For the most part you get London: often dirty, smelly and unpleasant. You want to pay for quality? You get Oslo: clean, efficient, odourless (apart from the fish) and very pleasant.

We in the UK, however, live in the something-for-nothing culture. We want to cut the corners, make a fast buck, get there first, wherever there is. Hang the design, how cheap can you make it?

Depressed as I was, then, to return to England, I did so understanding more clearly what it means to be English. The Norwegians are people connected to their landscape, to their natural environment; people who care about design and don’t think cars are the symbols of freedom their manufacturers would have us believe.

English culture is largely the reverse.”
