Good for them. It’s no big secret that athletic success buys you more publicity than you could possibly pay for. I’m actually quite envious – I wish someone in our administration would wake up and realize this. But I guess they’re too busy giving each other bullshit awards and looking at the world through their glass belly buttons.

I truly believe our university administration has no idea the impact a first class athletic program can have on the university as a whole…

if they did we would be tripping all over ourselves to fire that blue jean wearing to the Angus Barn son of a bitch who knows how to do nothing but shit and sit down in it…

and get his name in the paper or his face on his own tv show…

I actually think that our University DOES understand the impact that athletics success can have on other parts of the University.

I just don’t think that our University:

    (1) knows what success is

    (2) knows how to achieve success

    (3) believes that NC State deserves to be successful

^Statefans, I think you could just throw out the (1) and (2) on your list, because just like back in the 90’s that same attitude still permeates the entire university in Raleigh. Your number (3) is STILL the root of everything that is wrong with NC State.

    Might be said differently —

I just think that our university:

    1) has tasted success

    2) is complacent about what it takes to be a winner

    3) reacts only to pressure exerted by a drop in financial support

The other interesting study is the increased enrollment in George Mason University after their final 4 visit. Then again, athletics are nothing but a distraction and money pit to the true goals of a university. Athletics has no bearing on the educational aspect.

Yes, I am being facetious. Maybe our powers that be think we dont need more enrollment.

Kudos to the admins at Davidson. When asked about the cost of taking any student who wanted to go to the tourney, the admin replied “College is not just about books, but it is the experience, and this is part of the experience.” Way to go Davidson! That is an expereince those STUDENTS (forget the players) will always remember.

I have no idea why our leaders are content to be less than medicore. You cannot convince me that they are capable of leading NC State out of academic mediocrity any more than they are capabile of bring us our of athletic worst than mediocrity.

In particular I don’t understand our BOT. Unless the UNC appointees (what is it , 6 or so) to our BOT rule.

I would love to see a plot of how we have fared since the late 60’s and early 70s, when we were even with GT in terms of engineering and had some great athletic programs.

I suspect if you plot our academic rank and our athletic rank, you would be amazed at how correlated the slide has been.

Looks like all but one got their Bachelor degrees from State. You would think they would care about how we’re slinking into mediocrity. Maybe they do, but don’t think we are mediocre. Hell, I don’t know.

I’m not sure the BOT worries that much about the state of State athlectics. At least as long as the team are not coming in 12th all the time.

This is a conservative, middle of the road, group of nominees who spend a small bit of their time at a few meetings each year and get to place this as an extra item on their CV.

There is no motivating factor for this group so don’t look for our savior here — these are the same type people who (had they been present) would also have fired Jim Valvano and part of the current group of non-visionaries who have done nothing to commemorate him since.

Appears the BOT, and not just this current group, but the BOT since the early 90’s, does not have the passion, sense of accountability, and big picture vision to compete against UNC and Duke. They just don’t have the talent in them.

Completely agree with what “Statefans” stated . . . “believes that NC State does not deserve to be successful”.

Hey BOT, what is your focus, what are you striving for . . .would it be too much for you to document some guiding principles that you try to achieve, like:
    – Produce athletic programs that consistently compete for both conference and national titles.
    – Create an elite education experience that is regarded nationally as best in class.

I had never been more confident in the future of NC State than when MAF set her agressive goals. Where has that type of leadership been?

    Oh well . . .

And BoKnows . . .I agree, we’ve got one of THE most legendary coaches and we have nothing dedicated for his time and dedication to NC State. That is sad.

Don’t even get me started on what it could have meant to all of us RIGHT NOW, and all that has been lost by NC State’s totally short-sighted, ignorance, about one their own, Jim Valvano.

Once again, they could have reached out and made things right, long after they had taken their initial stand, and for years after they had thrown Valvano out on his ear. He came back to celebrate his time in Raleigh and never showed any animosity at all. But they just couldn’t do it, or even see past the self-righteous noses on their own faces. It is truly a waste and a loss not only for every student/athlete that has passed through there since then, and who could have taken pride in what his legacy has grown into and become, but also for every student/kid who could have also related to “The V Foundation” and felt pride in it as an integral part of NC State as well.
