25th Anniversary – April 4, 1983; SFN Blogs the ‘Celebration’

Today’s entry is a two-parter. One part good. One part disgusting.

1983 Anniversary
Many on the faculty hate it. I’m sure most of the adminstrators are oblivious to it. The folks who don’t follow sports don’t understand it. Our rivals used to shake their head at it. But, today’s date is perhaps the most important date in the history of North Carolina State Univeristy.

We’re going to ask our readers to use this entry to link all of the ‘anniversary articles’ that you find in our comments section so that we can build a single entry as a resource for our archive. We also want to turn your attention to this key fantastic entry in our archives that provides a much deeper education and perspective on the 1983 than you get from most places. Please feel free to continue the conversation that has started in that entry.

We kicked off coverage of 4/4/83 a couple of days ago with this ESPN piece on Ernie Myers. At first I thought that the selection of Ernie Myers as a subject for focuse was more than a little strange. Then I remembered that NC State’s current Sports Information Director is married to Ernie Myers and it all became very clear.

1983 Anniversary ‘Celebration’
Unfortunately, this season’s window to appropriately honor the 1983 Wolfpack has passed and NC State bumbled the opportunity with only the complete ineptness that NC State can. Anyone who attended the (supposed) ‘ceremony’ to honor the 1983 team during this season’s Clemson game left significantly disappointed.

The ‘ceremony’ was nothing short of a joke. A complete embarassment that left even the most unindependent thinking Wolfpack fan scratching their head in bewilderment.

In case you mssed it – The ceremony existed of walking the team on the court and announcing their names. It was literally one step more intimate than honoring the members of our swim team that make Dean’s List. That’s it. About 3 to 4 minutes. Nothing else.

There was NO VIDEO created for the ceremony. In case you live near NC State you will be surprised to learn that it is currently 2008 and most middle schoolers can put together videos in a couple of hours.

There were no special words or moving tribute by anyone. No pictures or video of Jim Valvano. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that it was literally, NOTHING.

In fact, the following names were not acknowledged or even mentioned a single time in conjunction with the 1983 team – Terry Gannon, Dereck Whittenburg, and SIDNEY LOWE. That is right. Because Gannon, Whittenburg and OUR CURRENT HEAD COACH were not standing on he court, the Einsteins who put together this embarassment neglected to announce their names or acknolwedge their presence on the 1983 team.

To fill some time, they piggy-backed a ceremony whereby they gave Lorenzo Charles his jersey. But, this wasn’t the ceremony where his jersey is officially ‘honored’. His jersery will be hung next year. This process actually took more time and attention than did the ceremony for the team. Awesome! (sarcasm) Again…no video of Lorenzo Charles.

The small set of Wolfpackers who suffered through the egg that the program laid in the ACC Tournament actually got to see a FANTASTIC video of the 1983 team at halftime of the Miami game. The conference produced a wodnerful five+ minute piece for the tournament that was EXACTLY what anyone in 2008 would have expected — anyone other than the folks who run things over at one of the supposed top ‘technical schools in America. Riiiiigght.

Additionally, the ACC produced a similar video of Charles that was run at the ACC Legends Brunch the Saturday morning of the semi-finals. (That would be the legends brunch where I saw Wake Forest’s Ron Wellman in attendance but did not see NC State’s Lee Fowler). Hell…if nothing else NC State should have just called the ACC and pushed them to rush production so that our inept and lazy team could just use the conference’s work.

It gets worse.

Apparantly the 1983 team did NOT have tickets for the Clemson game for their ceremony! I am not joking.

The list for complimentary tickets were submitted by Quentin Jackson and the basketball program just a few hours before the game at which time the ticket office discovered that the 1983 team was not sitting behind the bench as was supposed to be the case. Jackson was notified and said that he could not move anyone and told the office just to ‘find them some seats.’ (If you have noticed the crips and the bloods that have been sitting behind our bench over the last couple of years then you probably realize that Jackson would have been taking his life in his hands if he were to dare move his homies from their prime perches behind the bench.)

Although we got no confirmation on the final result, we heard that the 1983 team was ultimately given a row of seats BEHIND THE BAND that are normally kept open since you cannot see over the band. Of course, we can’t imagine how the University &/or the athletics leadership didn’t have some form of a luxury box arranged for this group before hand. But, that is just us. That is just the way you treat customers, clients, and important stakeholders in your universe. Who would ever actually do something nice for the 25th anniversary of some of the most important people in your department’s history?

Evidently, the Athletics Department met for months about this ceremony… what the f*&# they were supposedly meeting about is anyone’s guess considering a homeless person could have orchestrated the execution of 20 people walking onto the court and standing their while the PA announcer read their names.

The Basketball office/Quentin Jackson (we will call him “Q” so that we can fit in with the professional nature of the program) had one responsibility in this process (which was obviously one more responsibility than everyone else) – arrange tickets behind the bench. Of course, this was screwed up in a manner very similar to the Wolfpack’s Basketball Schedule in 2006-2007 when Jackson FORGOT to schedule State’s “Heritage Game” in Reynolds. That’s right. You remember how that game was not a part of the season ticket offer and was not on the original schedule? That is because Jackson, despite being told to schedule it and being given Les Robinson’s telephone number to have The Citadel lined up as our opponent, forgot to follow through and schedule the game.

The folks at NC State will tell you that the marketing office took care of the ceremony in a flawless fashion. What the hell do they think went flawlessly? There was nothing to go wrong! Was it the fact that most of the people got to the arena? The straight line that they walked onto the floor? The amazing way they all stood still for four minutes? The fact the public address announcer got most of their names correct? You know, the names that they didn’t forget to acknowledge?

Unfortunately for those of us who work in the real world and who are a part of the dwindling number of people that actually care – this kind of behavior and work ethic further underscores the inept leadership vaccuum that exists within the walls of our Athletics Department.

Many of these people don’t even think that anything went wrong. Hell, many of them think that the ceremony was ‘flawless’. How can you ever expect to get first rate productions in your $166 million facility when the people running the stuff think that this kind of stuff is great work?

Ultimately, this will be ‘nobody’s fault’ because nobody has ownership of anything over there. Surely you shouldn’t bother Lee Fowler with such details. He’s the AD! He’s not actually ‘responsible’ for anything that happens in his department – especially something this high profile and important to those unimportant ‘lunatic fringe’ fans. He obviously isn’t held accountable for anything. Hell, he’s actually “excellent” if you ask the Chancellor.

So I guess I’m in the minority that the style of ceremony was appropriate for something that happened 25 years ago? You’ll never have one that tops the 10 year anniversary so why even try? Of course people should be upset with the BS about the tickets, names, jersey ceremony, etc, but its just not going to ever be better than the 10 year reunion.

RBCRowdy said, “But this info has to leave this blog and go beyond students like myself who read it during boring classes and get into the hands of older alumni.”

It does. I’m an older alumni. I started at NCSU 3 years after the 1st championship and graduated 2 years before the 2nd championship. Those were heady days. Back then, we looked DOWN on the tarholes and doohockeys.

But the alumni don’t have any special sway over the powers that be other than to withhold money. We’re just part of what Lee Fowl-up thinks are the 50 or so odd people on the internet criticizing him.

I for one have all but given up. Our leadership is completely inept but instead of being on the hotseat he is being recommended for awards. We suck. UNC is playing for a championship we cannot even celebrate a 25 year old one.

Thank you for this entry! Spot on! Not a frequent poster here or anywhere. However this little event angered and disappointed me more than words can describe.

Unlike a game where another team is trying to prevent you from succeeding, the halftime ceremony had no opposing defense shutting them down or forcing them into bad decisions. Evidently the only thing in the way of a classy, well thought out ceremony to honor a team that meant so much to so many was a team of imbeciles and a bush league administration with no imagination, zero professionalism, and absolutely no accountability.
I’m teetering on the edge of dropping all donations to anything related to NC State.

This type of thing isn’t limited to athletics. Check out how well organized some of the college sponsored conferences and academic events are. Pathetic. This type of stuff just doesn’t fly in the private sector unless you can dupe enough investors to keep it afloat. I suppose I’ve been duped.

Gannon had a pretty decent-sized blurb in today’s USA Today (I’m on the road, it’s the paper they give me) talking about 1983 and V’s impact on his career. Good stuff.

  7. nycfan 04/04/2008 at 2:52 PM #

You guys should consider breaking this into 2 entries … one a positive thread with good stuff about the 25th anniversary, the other commiserating about the current state of affairs.

I was thinking about how different things were then, NCAA Basketball was still not the big business it is now. In ’82, I got James Worthy’s autograph (free) at the Lenoir Mall when he went around the state giving autographs the summer after the title.

In ’85, I got Lo Charles’ autograph on my ’84 ACC Handbook spread about State’s ’83 title when he and other ACC seniors barnstormed the State in ACC senior basketball games played in high school gyms around the region.

Makes it all seem quaint now, but expansion to 64 teamsa and State’s Cindarella run in ’83, together (IMO) with Nova in ’85 and Kansas in ’88, are a big part of what made the NCAA Tournament the phenomenon it is now.

  8. BJD95 04/04/2008 at 3:12 PM #

We would have squared off against that Kansas team in 88, if we hadn’t shat the bed against Murray State. I was in Nebraska for that atrocity. Kansas was the 6 seed, and State the 3 seed, IIRC. Ironically enough, it was Kansas that I expected to be upset, by 11th seeded Xavier.

THe more I have let thsi simmer the more irate I have become.

In defending Fowler I keep hearing people say “what can he do except fire and hire people?”
Here is a perfect example. His lazy manner has filtered down the line. Very few will work harder than their manager so if the manager is lazy then everyone under him will be lazy. My hope is that TOB (because of self disicpline) is one of those individuals that does not need that guidance.
Is there any area in which slothfulness does not permeate our athletic department? Costner is a microcosm of what is wrong with NCSU. Undiscipined.

  10. Pack92 04/04/2008 at 3:20 PM #

^ Amen Whitt. ABC all day and twice on Sunday. I have an Oregon St. t-shirt (swept the pansies 2 straight years in CWS) I love to wear in Greensboro and would love to wear a Kansas one as well. What I would really like is to have something that says “NC State Champion of (fill in the blank). I tried for a year to find one that said that for our ladies softball championship and finally gave up. I really hate to get to the point of cussing but our absolutely inept athletic dept. sure makes you want to.

  11. Pack92 04/04/2008 at 3:27 PM #

^Thank you Rick. I agree 100% and just keep getting more angry.
The good thing about TOB is he does NOT let those around him dictate what his levels of acceptance are. The levels and expectations are high and the situation does not change that whatsoever.

  12. packgrad93 04/04/2008 at 3:29 PM #

“Very few will work harder than their manager so if the manager is lazy then everyone under him will be lazy.”

so are NCSU coaches in all sports lazy?

  13. highstick 04/04/2008 at 3:30 PM #

This is totally disgusting and it reinforces my opinion that the WPC is very much part of the problem. I’ve not understood the love for Purcell either when this type stuff goes on. Maybe someone can “unconvince” me, but this is just purely astonishingly sickening!

James, I tried to send an email last week to the email address you gave but it “bounced back”. I’m wondering if there aren’t more people responding and not getting through???? I’ll try again!

  14. Mike 04/04/2008 at 3:54 PM #

I commented rhetorcially in the previous 25th celebration about Ernie Myers, and why he got the fluff piece from ESPN. No one made a comment about it so I wondered if it was lost on everyone. In this piece, you acknowlegde why Myers was chosen. My rant here is the same as the rant of this blog piece. The top “wolves” are totally incompetent to pull off anything, from AD to Sports Information to Q and on down the line.

I was not at the game so I did not see the celebration and recognition, but reading this makes me laugh. The RBC staff is very good at what they do, but they only do what they are told to do. Their prodcution work is top notch. Heck, I can see V running around the court like a madman looking for somoene to hug any day of the week on CBS. I bet I can find clips on YouTube that they could have played. And to only announce the names of the guys standing on the court – please tell me this is a late April Fools piece.

I would have tried to find an old tape of CA Dillon annoucning the starting line up, videos of the “pass”, the dunk, and the running for a hug, something. This is just unbelievable. They had video footage of the celebration in Reynolds when they returned – find that and put on the jumbotron.

I am sorry I read this – just unbelievable.

  15. SaccoV 04/04/2008 at 3:56 PM #

TOB will hopefully be the saving grace of what continues to be unacceptable negligence in the Athletics Department. So far, Fowler has made two decent hires, one of which was hand-picked (Carter Jordan). Other than that, he’s padding his wallet and hoping another institution that is entirely substandard in its expectations needs “Dr. Mediocre” to come “level the playing field.” One more point, I’ve contacted one fellow Triad-based Wolfpack Club Member about how to go about removing Fowler from this position through the WPC. I didn’t receive much confidence from him but was encouraged to speak to others. If you live in the Triad, seek out the WPC members and get them on the case. We need change in every possible way, and I feel like I’m on a morphine drip with a terminal disease as a State fan these days.

  16. highstick 04/04/2008 at 3:57 PM #

I just tried the email address [email protected] and it’s coming back with a message of invalid recipient. Is Fowler in charge of this too????

  17. Howler 04/04/2008 at 4:07 PM #

Wow. I was not at the Clemson game, and I had no idea the ceremony was so lousy. With video displays so prominent these days, we have come to expect a more sensory experience than just some guys on the court taking a step forward when their names are called. What a slap in the face to the Valvano family. If nothing else, we should celebrate Coach Valvano every chance we get.

I went to the Wake game this season, and their pre-game, player-introduction video on the scoreboard featured players and coaches of years gone by. Even though I’m Wolfpack through and through, when Skip Prosser appeared on the screen, I felt chills go up my spine. And this is a team that has never won a national championship. What the hell are we doing in Raleigh?

I just keep telling myself one of these days here at SFN I’m gonna click on one of these links and be “RICK-ROLLED” but it never happens.

    Amazing Truths!

  19. erichack 04/04/2008 at 4:12 PM #

This is my first entry on this blog, but have been a fan for some time and a longtime NCSU fan, going back to the 70’s. This year I had a total collapse of passion for NCSU. It was like a family member died, but it was something that had to happen so that i can begin to find a better tomorrow.

The only way to make any impact on the current situation is to stop giving money. Just stop. I think i have seen entries expressing that we have become our own worst enemy because of our loyalty and willingness to continue investing in a losing cause. Just stop it. If that is unthinkable then create an indepedent fund that will only be contributed when things are corrected, but can also service as an indication of just how disgusted fans are becoming. It would be an interesting thing to see just how much money would be collected as a protest to current admin.

  20. tvp1 04/04/2008 at 5:08 PM #

“Unfortunately for those of us … who are a part of the dwindling number of people that actually care…”

Truth spoken here. As much as I love NC State sports I have not been able to justify making a financial investment in it since I graduated 5 years ago. I live a 5 hour drive away and don’t make many games in person. I feel like any money I give to the WPC will just be enabling the disaster to continue.

  21. highstick 04/04/2008 at 5:08 PM #

Erichack, I’m with you bud. Was there in the 60’s for a couple of years, played Army, then came back in 70 and graduated in 72. I’m so sick of what’s going on, I’m sick to my stomach on a daily basis about it. I could have transferred to Carolina when I changed curriculums, but by then I was a die hard State fan and this stuff just kills me. I quit giving a long time ago because of it and I was an Alumni Association member, a WPC member, and gave to annually to the School of Management. Maybe it’s just the big guys that they care about, but no more.

Being a CPA, there are some quirks about taking contributions and “sitting on them”, i.e. the “private foundation rules”, but maybe there’s some ways around this. Not sure about donating to the WPC and restricting the contribution until Lee Fowler is fired. But, talk about what kind of controversy that would start. The “Fire Lee Fund”. They’d probably just send the contribution back!

  22. wolfman 04/04/2008 at 5:21 PM #

Yes. And it doesn’t stop at WPC donations and dues, PSLs/LTRs, or even tickets to games. Every hat, shirt, sticker, etc you buy that is emblazoned with the NC State logo puts money in Lee’s coffers.

  23. timswar 04/04/2008 at 5:41 PM #

Sometimes I wonder if Oblinger and Fowler aren’t a part of the “downgrade athletics so it won’t be a distraction for academics” crowd. Fox seemed to do all she could during her tenure to downplay any non-academic tradition at NCSU, and was known (at least during my time on campus) to not be a fan of the athletics programs.

Since Oblinger is such a “stay the course” kind of man (from everything I’ve heard/read) then wouldn’t a continual downgrading be a part of his agenda as well?

Then again, I’m assuming they could construct a conspiracy of this nature, I’m not sure Fowler has the cunning to be involved in something like that.

  24. CStanley 04/04/2008 at 6:57 PM #

The way our University has “honored” the 1983 team this season has been nothing short of utterly fucking pathetic.

Christ, the point guard off that team is the head coach…yet I saw absolutely NOTHING from the school this year, except a DVD put on sale (which was already out) and the “ceremony” during halftime of the Clemson game.

Our athletics administration is useless. When you want to know the difference between us & Carolina in athletics…one only has to look at the folks who run it first. UNC is first class, no bullshit, take no prisoners, nobody gets in there way. Having done a lot of work over there with athletics involved, I’ve seen them in action.

State’s, on the other hand, cannot take one step without tripping over itself. Pathetic.

  25. Dogbreath 04/04/2008 at 8:02 PM #

Everybody calm down, and rest assured. Somewhere near the lake, Lee Fowler is relaxing in his bleached Wranglers, enjoying an extra well-done flank steak and fries, with a nice glass of white zin.
