Tudor: Gonzalez makes a good showing

But there was a winner on the opposite team, too. It was beleaguered Wolfpack point guard Javier Gonzalez, a freshman with such a maligned background that he spent part of Thursday afternoon begging for a reprieve in State coach Sidney Lowe’s office. So bad was Gonzalez’s performance in the Wolfpack’s 72-62 home loss to Florida State on Wednesday that he felt his role as a regular in the lineup was in jeopardy.

“I wanted Coach to know that I could still help this team,” Gonzalez said. “I just went to him, and asked him not to give up on me. I’m capable of being better. I didn’t want him to lose confidence in me.”

One of the few bright spots yesterday. If Javi can step up and mature into at least a good ACC point guard, then maybe next year isn’t totally lost just yet.

I’m not sure why all State fans have been so hard on Javi. After this season, he’s by far, the most improved player on our team. You have to realize, Javi was a late recruit, only a three star prospect, and those first few games, he was horrific. He has improved by far the most out of any of the players on our team. I have the utmost confidence in Javi, and I think he has come along just fine, and will be a good point guard for us. He needs to work on his jumper, and his defense, and he will be solid. The rest of our team though…is a different story.

After yesterday’s game, I feel a little better about next year. We finally saw the Pack play as a team with a mission. I’ve been harping on the lack of effort all year and it was great to see them dig down and come out ready to play. It stinks that we lost but at least now I have some hope again (not slipping back into denial.)

^I think the reason people were so hard on Javi is that until recently, he along with MJ weren’t showing much improvement from game to game. However, he has finally turned the corner and is playing with confidence. He deserves a lot credit for sticking with it in the face of much critizism and down right embarrising performances. The young man has shown he has character. Congratulations Javi, keep up the good work.

I fear the kind of disaster we’ve had this year with bizarre rotations, players not knowing from game to game or even moment to moment who will be playing and who won’t, getting even worse at the guard spot next year.

Anyone care to give a guess as to who our eventual starting and primary point guard will be next year? It seems as though we’ll have at least three guys at that position, but none clearly better than the others. Is Degand the top guy? What, then Javi is his back up? Then what does Mays do, play for three years behind Javi and Degand?

And what if we get Wall and Brown the next year? Does Wall start, as a freshman, putting Degand as a back up and Javi third on the depth chart at the point, and Mays fourth string? And the wonderful Marques Johnson as our fifth string point guard? Five point guards?

Or is Mays a two guard, who will play behind Fells next year, and Fergy, so he’s a third string guy next year, and the following year we bring in Brown, hopefully? So then he plays as third string for two years and then is second string his senior year after Fergy graduates?

It seems as though we may have over half our roster taken up with career back-level guards. Very strange. Is this really a strategy?

Gonzales’ improvement game-to-game in the ACC season has been obvious to anyone paying attention. His troubles in the FS game just serve to underline how young he is and how much pressure and responsibility has been placed on this kid.

“…the coach has had no choice but to make adjustments. Freshman Javier Gonzalez has tried his best, but he simply doesn’t have the talent or experience to bring out the best in the rest of the lineup.”

Exact words in print by Tudor about the Exact subject 48 hours earlier. Don’t worry I’ve already sent an EMail to him asking if any words like “senial” are mentioned in his N & O contract.

  8. PackGirl 03/02/2008 at 12:59 PM #

^I agree 100%. Javi has improved exponentially over the season and it started way before yesterday.

I wonder if Paulus continued to hand check after he got the crap knocked out of him… I wasn’t paying too much attention to it and it’s hard to tell on my low-def 19 inch tv.

^^And I forgot all about Wood, the guard from Indiana we’ve already signed.

    So…

Our bright spot and leading scorer yesterday was Javi–a guard.

Our highest, yet still moderately rated incoming player next year is — a guard.

Our starter from this year who will return from injury for next year is — a guard.

We have Johnson and Ferguson, — a guard, and a guard.

We’ve already signed one player for the year after next, Wood–a guard

And the two blue chip recruits we hope to add to Wood are — guards.

That’s eight players for two roster spots.

Even if we play a three guard offense and bring them in as two completely different waves of three players each, that STILL leaves two sholarships used on guys who will never play, buried at 7th and 8th on the depth chart.

So, if all goes well…Mays is better than rated and we get Wall, then Javi is our fourth option at the point. Ok.

It’s been a long season but you have to keep on keeping on! Should be the State motto! I have a gut feeling that JJ will be back for his ACC farewell tour next year. Ben has proven that he is the better 4 over Costner. Fells is a lock at the 3 position next year. Degand/Javi will be solid PG’s next year and the only weak spot I see is the 2 guard. What do you guys think? Who will start and who’s the best #2 position? Also, I was at the game as well and we got jobbed by the stripes! Costner showed that he wasn’t going to take the refs shit any longer when Javi was rapped and mugged at half court! It could of been a Henderson/Hansbaby moment if Costner didn’t hold back a little at the last moment! Go Pack

I think a 3-guard offense might suit us well, considering all of the guards in this league and in college in general.

Mays has mostly been playing the 2 this year in high school, and I think he could play either for us. He sounds like a pretty good shooter, so maybe he fits in okay at the 2 without getting buried behind our other point options.

  13. vtpackfan 03/02/2008 at 1:11 PM #

We won’t get Wall, and even IF, the guy is so good he heads straight to the NBA. Also, did I miss something with the Duke line up yesterday? They really looked incomplete out their with Singler and Thomas the only players over 6’6″ that get meaningful minutes.

Here’s a good thought West, go to DBR and tell them about how you to have X amount of schollies held out just for bigs, instead of the best player available that wants to commit. I’m not bashing you, you are not the only one stuck in a rut of this thinking. I’m just trying to say keep an open mind and let this staff work the way the deem necessary.

There will be plenty of time to discuss any perceived recruiting success and failures in the future.

  14. Trip 03/02/2008 at 1:21 PM #

As far as our guard situation, you guys are talking like starting freshmen in the ACC is normal? Those guys shouldn’t expect minutes their freshman year, the only reason we’re giving out such heavy minutes to Javi this year is because of necessity. Once Mays/Wood come to town we won’t have the necessity and they can practice, build, improve in practice and wait till they earn their time.

  15. vtpackfan 03/02/2008 at 1:21 PM #

^420^ I have a better chance of growing hair on my bald spot than does State have in getting Hick’s back next year. Just call him Josh Powell and call it a day. McAuley will have to move back to C. Tracy should start every game at the PF from here out as long as he’s in a Wolfpack uniform. Horner & Johnny (Thomas) compete for the three, Fells & Fergueson battle it out for the two. Javy is our PG day one until anyone shows they are better. We probably suck again, but why should we care? No one in the AD apparently does!

  16. wolfpacker420 03/02/2008 at 1:32 PM #

Hickson will not get the lottery pick that he wants and he’ll comeback for one more to dominate! why do you want to put fells at the 2 when he has showed he plays the 3 natural? Let’s find a home for these guys and stick with it and we may find some chemistry next year! Costner needs to go the boot camp to work off the pounds and find a heart!! This team could shock people next year with the right off season workout! The older players step up when the young ones play with heart b/c they don’t want to be shown up by a freshman.

People have been hard on Javi because he was terrible at the beginning of the season and inconsistent at the end of season. He played above his skill level yesterday. In reality though, he’s just not that good. He can be a solid backup, but we will need more to succeed in the ACC.

Recently, he’s been able to take advantage of the fact that people don’t respect him and therefore overplay him on the perimeter. Regardless, you can see the improved confidence. People have been daring him all season to go to the rack and only recently has he had the confidence to drive.

I’m very hopefull for the ACC tourney. We will DEFINITELY win the play-in game…if that where we end up. We should make a good showing in the tourney. I guess that also depends on if Tracy Smith and Fergie get the amount of playing time they deserve. Conversely, I think Horner and Costner need to spend more time on the bench.

vtpack…I imagine the fine people at DBR might point out that their plethora of wing players are all McD AA’s. Just a thought.

I know I’m echoing some of what has already been said so if it stands as mere reinforcement to another’s logic-so be it!

Who knows what could happen next year? Our situation certainly didn’t play out the way everyone thought it would this year. It’s all speculative supposition at this point. Next years on paper and no one can predict a thing with that. We may have a glut of guards on our roster. Degand may back up Javi or both may be on the bench backing up Mays. You just can’t tell. If I’ve learned one thing this year it’s-don’t look too far into the future.

Lowes’ on the job learning experience has no doubt been difficult to watch but the reality is (before the lofty expectations implanted into our heads via the media hype) no one expected this team to do well in the first couple of years. We made a run at the end of last year and had that perspective (rather than what lead up to it) in the end. As far as what we could have been had someone other than Lowe been our coach-I say, who cares. Playing what ifs does nothing.

Javi’s improvements are a certain plus. His trial by fire could prove to be a positive for him going into next year. Having two veteran guards to groom Mays will not be a bad thing. Johnson may very well be a wash but the reality is (as someone pointed out yesterday) everyone felt the same way about Fergy. It seems we often live and die by the perception of what’s happening right now rather than looking at the whole picture. Looking a little into the future like a game or two is fine. But I challenge anyone to not look too far and to also look back on things to gain a balanced perspective on things.

I think we will get Lo Brown. I think we have a better than 50 percent chance of getting John Wall.

If Wall comes, yes, he starts over Degand. Wall, right now, is 20 times better than Degand.

Mays and Wood are complimentary/role players. I don’t think either will make a significant impact.

  21. westwolf 03/02/2008 at 2:09 PM #

    Noah, I agree with you.

  22. travelwolf 03/02/2008 at 2:09 PM #

duke better hope we don’t meet them early in the acc tournament. we’ve got their number…

  23. Afterglow 03/02/2008 at 2:10 PM #

If Hickson leaves he’s making a mistake. He’ll go at the end of the first round and more than likely play in the Developmental league. There are just too many power forwards in the draft.

With all that said, from a personal standpoint, I could see how one could be tempted to go for it if in the same shoes as Hickson. It’s easy to get jaded with all blood sucking agents out there pumping your brain with false hopes.

  24. Afterglow 03/02/2008 at 2:24 PM #

I have my doubts on Wall. 50% may be accurate but I may score a little lower like 30%. If Wall were in a different state (somewhere far from the south) then the stakes may actually play in our favor a little better. But I can’t imagine he feels too good about coming here with all the negative press the pack has received this year.

If he does come here one could argue that Lowe is one hell of a recruiter. I even have my doubts on Lo Brown. If I’m proved wrong then great!

I think it was good basketball to clock Paulus upside the head early in the game when he was in Javi’s rightful space. Javi set the boundaries and had room to work after that. I also loved it when he slapped the defender’s hand off of his body. Javi has the grit to play against Duke.
