Saturday Bytes – Tarheels defeat Wolfpack (sound familiar?) OR State’s/Davidson irony (Updated 2pm)

……crunch….. Carolina’s third ranked baseball team beat the Wolfpack 5-2 yesterday (I thought we had some new authors who were excited about covering baseball on SFN? hello? anyone out there?).

The Tar heels are 21-4 overall and 8-2 in the ACC. After a one-hit loss to Marshall, the Wolfpack are tracking just perfectly to an average Lee Fowler led program with an indistinguishable 14-9 overall record and 4-6 in the ACC. The program could still squeeze into the NCAA Tournament on the bubble and make no national noise but still provide the Sports Information Department a chance to contrive a statistic about how many of our programs compete in post-season play.

When Eliot Avent was hired as NC State’s Head Baseball coach in the mid 1990s the Wolfpack’s baseball program was clearly ahead of UNC-CH’s (then coached by Mike Roberts). In the years that have followed NC State has upgraded our facilities with a multi-million improvement while UNC fired Roberts and hired Mike Fox. During the same time period the Tar Heels have vaulted to a Top 10 program in the country (two consecutive CWS appearances) while NC State has slid into the bottom half of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Now the Tar heels are embarking on a huge renovation to their stadium that will catapult it far ahead of the poorly executed renovation at Doak Field in Raleigh. Since NC State’s athletics department clearly believe that the impact of individuals and human capital is irrelevant and facilities supposedly deliver Championships then I guess it won’t be long until they come back to WolfpackNation and ask for more money to go build a new stadium so that we can keep up off-the-field (since we don’t care about keeping up on the field).

……crunch….. We talked about Davidson in this entry on Friday before the Wildcats went out and manhandled Wisconsin to advance to the Elite 8.

I was thinking about the Wildcats’ success and was struck with a depressing realization – After growing up a die-hard Wolfpack fan, I entered NC State as a college freshman in 1989. In the twenty years that have transpired since, the Davidson Wildcats have advanced to as many Sweet 16s and more Elite 8s than NC State’s Basketball program. All hail the Wildcats! At least they wear red.

……crunch…..The Wildcats’ run to the Elite Eight contains tons of sad irony for NC State fans. Try some of this on for size. Davidson, whose school colors are a shade of red that resembles NC State’s colors:

* won their first two games of the NCAA Tournament on NC State’s home court at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

* defeated Georgetown in Raleigh to advance to the Sweet 16. Georgetown defeated NC State in the Sweet 16 in 1989 as the beneficiary of ‘the worst call in NCAA Tournament history’. (Must see link here).

* defeated the same Georgetown program team eventually won the recruiting battle against NC State for top point guard prospect, Chris Wright, whom the Wolfpack clearly could have used this year.

* defeated Wisconsin in the Sweet 16 last night to advance to the Elite 8. In 15 years as a Division One Head Basketball Coach, Herb Sendek’s only Sweet 16 team (at NC State) was defeated by…Wisconsin. The Wolfpack led by approximately double digits at halftime of the Sweet 16 game against the Badgers before pulling one of a series of disguisting collapses in postseason play during the early part of this decade in the Sendek years (Duke in ACC Title game; Maryland in ACC semi-finals; Vanderbilt in NCAA R32; Wisconsin in NCAA S16)

* defeated Wisconsin in the the Sweet 16 last night. Wisconsin is coached by Bo Ryan who employs an offense very similar to Coach Sendek’s at NC State. One of the most secretive items related to the NC State Head Basketball Coaching search two years ago was a meeting between Wisconsin’s Ryan and Lee Fowler (and NC State’s screening committee). ESPN was the only major media outlet to mention the smoke between the two parties at the time but no specifics were confirmed. Since the search, we have confirmed the conversations with a very guarded Ryan who was extremely sensitive to a leak and his fan base learning of his interest in our job. Ultimately, NC State’s contingent were not impressed.

* will play Kansas in the Elite 8. The Kansas Jayhawks defeated NC State’s last Elite 8 team in 1986 to advance to the Final Four before losing to Duke in Coach K’s first Final Four team.

* will play Kansas in the Elite 8. The Kansas Jayhawks were coached by Larry Brown when they defeated NC State’s last Elite 8 team in 1986. NC State’s Lee Fowler spoke with Larry Brown multiple times during Fowler’s search for a new NC State coach two years ago. Brown was a very vocal supporter of — Sidney Lowe for the Wolfpack’s job. In fact, many people close to the search reference a late push by Brown on Lowe’s behalf as a key factor to the late momentum that Lowe’s candidacy received.

* As RickJ shared in our comments section, Bill Self, the current Kansas coach replaced John Calipari on Larry Brown’s staff at Kansas. Self was an assistant in the 1985-1986 season when Kansas beat NC State in Kansas City – our last Elite 8 appearance. Self was still the coach at Tulsa and was identified by the folks on this blog as a super potential candidate for the Wolfpack when NC State fans started clamoring for removal of Herb Sendek in the late 1990s and 2000. Lee Fowler chose to stick with Herb Sendek and Self moved on to re-build Illinois struggling program before replacing Roy Williams at Kansas.

……crunch….. As we mentioned ^above, Bo Ryan’s name was one of the ‘quietest’ that was legitimately connected with NC State’s coaching search two years ago. Ryan was not very impressive to those close to the search. Another quiet name (but more public than Ryan) that was also poorly received by NC State was Lon Kruger, whom met with NC State representatives in Atlanta (if I remember correctly). At the time, we did a “Lon Kruger Entry” and a “Long Kruger Media Entry”.

Do you need more irony in this entry? How about the connection that Lon Kruger was replaced at Illiniois by none other than…Bill Self!?

CBS ran a detailed biography of Kruger’s career that we thought would be relevant to link in light of today’s entry.

StateFoxer-That’s good! I posted after you but didn’t refresh so I didn’t see your comment.

You see, and if there is anyone in this BLOG that is in the media that knew of this protest, they could if willing; do a story.

  2. Astral Rain 03/29/2008 at 6:23 PM #

I think it would take the students embarassing fowler on national TV, like wearing bags they see “Headgear provided by Fowler.”

  3. grouchomarx 03/29/2008 at 6:27 PM #

    ok, afterglow-
how do you propose to be heard? it appears from your post(I could be wrong) you’re not a WPC member, and you dont give any money to NCState athletics(do you buy any game tickets?) but you want your opinion to count-please tell why anyone in the administration should listen to you? I’m not flaming, I really don’t understand why LF, BP, or any one at NCSU should care about your opinion.

PS- I’m not a big time donor either but have been invested in the WPC and NCSU athletics since 1979.

  4. PAPacker 03/29/2008 at 6:33 PM #

It would take a concerted, collective action within the Wolfpack Club to get anything to change. That’s what I would work toward. Grassroots organization of WPC members getting them to contact the WPC staff and tell them specifically why you are not contributing, how much you are not contributing and what it will take to get you to contribute that amount again. Get people to act collectively and if your collective is large enough, people will notice.

    PAPacker-

    BINGO!!!

    WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

while we’re at it talking about the coaching search…

what was the total scoop with us and Rick Barnes…

how close did we really come…

  8. Afterglow 03/29/2008 at 6:58 PM #

My dad went to NC State as did my brother which is why I am a fan. I had other educational interests (Film) so I did not attend State. If I were to say to you that I have donated money to NC State I would be lying but I have donated my blood sweat and tears to NC State over the last 25 years and if I ever get into a financial situation that would allow me to, I would not be apposed (if the cause is right) to becoming a Wolfpack Club Member. Perhaps my opinion would count less to LF, BP or anyone else at NC State since I don’t give them a dime-but that doesn’t make me any less of a fan and it doesn’t make me any less angry about the state of State.

I believe there is more than one way to be heard beyond your proposal. I did not claim to have the answer but I do claim that there are answers out there and that perhaps someone on this BLOG knows it. LF, BP and NC State may not give a rats ass about my opinion even if were a member. But they may care about the media, they may care about a Wolfpack Club member, giving money to the United Way and making the donation in a WPC representative’s name as suggested by StateFoxer and they may care about students making a public mockery of Lee Fowler. My point is, that there are many ways to be heard.

As a student I have wanted to take a sign to a game that saids “Fire Fowler, Stafford and Oblinger” but I am sure it would get taken away. This administration doesn’t give a damn about the students so I am left hoping that graduate school will be better.

Back to the original topic…does this make Davidson the bizarro Wolfpack?

  11. doug74 03/29/2008 at 7:15 PM #

I love the Wildcats. Tonight I love the Cardinals.

You don’t have to be a big WPC donor to make a difference.

The problem is that 99% will not take the time to call someone in a leadership position and voice their concerns.

The larger problem is that 99.9% will not take the time to write a letter to the BOT, Chancelor, WPC, and others in a leadership position.

Everyone in any service related business knows that for every 1 written comment/suggestion received by a customer there are hundreds, perhaps thousands with the same complaint. So, literally a few hundred well posed letters to the right people could begin to make a difference, coupled with other personal one on one discussions, etc.

If enough alumni would actualy take the time to prepare well written letters, it would be significant.

I doubt if they have received 5 letters (not ranting emails) on the subject and I suspect they received many more when tailgating hours were reduced.

True Story—-A friend of mine had a problem with his seating at CF for football. He wrote a letter to the a high up in WPC and indicated the problem. Guess what–he got seats on the 50 yd line. He was so grateful he asked the WPC what he could do, they said, well you can write a letter to the AD indicating what you think of our organization. POINT—letters make a difference. EMAILS don’t count for anything, cause there is little effort required.

If you are a member of the wolfpack club simply quit. Money dries up and change will happen.

Watching Davidson in the tourny made me conjecture on what would have happened if State and Davidson could have traded rosters after State beat Davidson this year. I think both teams would have made the tourny but probably out in first round.

  14. Afterglow 03/29/2008 at 8:12 PM #

It’s funny Primewolf, I (along with others I’m sure) overlook the simplest of things; that’s why I love this type of stuff. Combine a slew of well composed letter with a Grassroots organization of WPC members who help emphasized these concerns and you have yourself a little movement.

  15. Afterglow 03/29/2008 at 8:24 PM #

Tough environment for the Cardinals to play in I mean Charlotte is hardly a neutral court-it’s tantamount to the Cards beating them at home. Sea of blue is all I see. GO CARDS!

  16. turfpack 03/29/2008 at 9:06 PM #

Watching the game-LOUISVILLE DOESN’T HAVE A CHANCE-NO WAY- NO HOW-I saw aleast 4 walks by UNX-no call-it’s a true home game for UNX.

Too bad we can’t convince Anonymous that Lee Fowler is a Scientologist… If we could do that things could be solved quickly.

  19. CStanley 03/29/2008 at 10:35 PM #

This has been a very painful year.

Tournament has been enjoyable, but tough to watch. Especially seeing Davidson’s success and…God forbid…more than likely, Carolina winning it all.

Tough pill to swallow after a terrible season.

  20. Wulfpack 03/29/2008 at 11:08 PM #

^No kidding. UNC is locked and loaded and the odds on favorite. I hope Davidson can knock Kansas out but it’s a bit of a predicament b/c I don’t think UNC would have any trouble at all with Davidson — it would just make the Heels’ road that much easier. UCLA is good but I seriously doubt they are better than UNC. I mean when Hansbrough is knocking down 20 footers at crucial junctures, what can you do? If it’s Memphis or Texas, no contest.

All in all, a terrible football/basketball season for the Wolfpack.

  21. CStanley 03/29/2008 at 11:20 PM #

Starting to think more and more that Memphis may be the best team remaining…other than Carolina.

  22. MrPlywood 03/29/2008 at 11:44 PM #

It would help if the calls were even. Tyler shouldn’t have been in the game through much of the second half – there were AT LEAST two fouls that he “got away with”, one of which was replayed prominently before a break. Clark for L’ville got called for two travels that looked pretty much like T’s regular “amazing” spin moves. T bumps Padgett out of bounds on the baseline – ball UNC. T stumbles down the lane and it’s amazing body control – no travel called. Of course I am biased and the may have been some calls that went the Cardinals way… naaahhhh. Even with that disparity, turnovers and poor free throw shooting did the Cards in. Evil survives.

  23. Rochester 03/30/2008 at 6:19 AM #

^There were clearly noncalls on Dicko T that should have been fouls. The announcers twice said “he got away with a foul there” and they didn’t catch them all. The guy is clearly a good player, so good I hope he finally leaves, but he should have been on the bench with foul trouble for most of the second half. He was raping Padgett (probably a subconscious dream of his) on nearly every play. If those are called fouls the outcome is different, because Dicko T was the difference in this game. Of course if Louisville hits the front end of a couple 1-and-1’s and doesn’t turn the ball over so much, maybe it’s a different story, too.

I’m thinking of the same Catch-22 as Wulfpack on Davidson/Kansas. I’m enjoying Davidson’s run, but I think Kansas can stop the Evil squad from winning the title. I doubt Davidson can. Then again, my rooting has never affected the outcome of a game, and usually works in reverse anyway.

  24. highstick 03/30/2008 at 11:32 AM #

I’m glad there’s at least enough of us here that we aren’t going to be quiet! I think that’s what got us here in the first place and it’s been so long, the next generation has accepted our fate.

Before Sid was hired, we talked about being mediocre! Well, we’ve gone was past mediocre to “Dead Arse Last” now. If that isn’t a wakeup call for the money powers in the Wolfpack Club, then I guess we can just pack it in and join App. State in their division of the NCAA.

You guys have lots of good ideas, it’s just a matter of coordinating and focusing our efforts, no matter how small. I’m hitting that “age” where I’d much rather be a supporter and follower rathere than a leader, but if we can focus our efforts to “turn the N C State ship around”, I’ll be more than glad to participate.

How’s the plan for “excellence” going? Maybe that’s a start!

I just can’t watch BBall anymore listening the announcers/Carolina. Please somebody beat ’em so they’ll shut up for the year!!

On the Wolfpacker site message boards there is talk of starting a grass roots effort to have change. Hopefully there is something that can be done to correlate everything and get things going.

We need a revolution to reveal the truths.
