NCAAT Selection Thread

Naturally, UNC and Duke get cushy draws. Duke won’t play a good team before the Elite Eight. The other teams in their way? All are very weak relative to seed – #3 Xavier, #6 Purdue, #7 West Virginia, #10 Arizona. UNC doesn’t fare quite as well, despite their #1 overall seed. Still, only one decent opponent in their half of the regional bracket, #4 Washington State. I said “decent”, not good.

Our valiant Tigers’ path to the Sweet Sixteen goes through Villanova and Vandy. Kansas would be very tough to beat if OP’s Tigers are to top Rick Barnes’ best run at Clemson.

The only injustice I see is the omission of Virginia Tech. You will never convince me that any of Baylor, Soth Alabama, St. Joseph’s, Villanova, Arizona, or Oregon is as good as the Hokies. It;s certainly indisputable if you evaluate how each team is playing right now.

    TYLER…ROY…UNC…POWDER BLUE…BABY!!!

Unfortunately, we’re going to be HEARING and SEEING that crapola for awhile longer, heaven forbid, if not all the way up until, and through, next season.

I just hope Duke beats UCLA, or Clemson keeps it going, and somebody from the ACC goes further than the heels do.

The only one I’d have any trouble with is a unc vs georgetown matchup. I would know who to pull AGAINST in that one.

You didn’t know that senquack and lavin got married in the offseason?

“Miami will lose to Texas… although it should be a fiery matchup between Mcclinton and Augustine.”

I didn’t think about if Miami and Texas do indeed play it’s Haith vs. Barnes … Haith was on Barnes’ staff prior to taking the job at Miami

It is kind of hard to believe that the team Virginia shit-canned on the road, which also was under .500 in its league AND lost in the first round of its conference tourney made the dance. I guess it really is all RPI!

“THE big east got 8 teams-Acc got 4 teams -YEA that’s about right.”

Ok. Now name me one ACC that didn’t get in that deserves to be in over any of those eight Big East teams.

It isn’t about how many teams get in from one conference. It is always about the individual team and what that team did over the whole season. The Big East is loaded with good teams. Our middle of the road teams just did not get it done this year.

VT over Villanova. Easy call, IMHO.

  7. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 6:41 PM #

As much as it pains me to admit it, Wulfpack’s assessment on more Big East teams getting in is correct in my opinion … It’s team by team, and teams 5-12 in the ACC just didn’t really have anything to hang their collective hats on this season … But man, do I hate the Big East

Yeah, BJD – Arizona getting in is something … I even think their seed is too high at 10 (and they got placed in the West region) … I would hope their SOS was the deciding factor over RPI, but those two are related 🙁

^^^ Really, any team that NC State beat should have automatically been thrown off the bubble. Sorry VT and Villanova.

  9. Wulfpack 03/16/2008 at 6:43 PM #

VT – 19-13 overall. Best win was Miami in the tournament. No other wins over top 25 or teams in the tournament. Losses to Penn State, Richmond and Old Dominion.

Villanova – 20-12 overal. Wins over Temple, Pitt, West Virginia, and Connecticut.

    That was easy.

    A couple of thoughts:
*UNC has a brutal draw. They have the No. 1 RPI team in UT, one of the hotter team in the country in ‘ville. Notre Dame (if they can get to the Sweet 16) could give the Heels some match up problems too.
*VaTech should have gotten in, in front of St. Joe’s, Nova and Oregon.
*The Big East getting in 8 teams is a joke. If there’s something shady going on, it’s probably due to their size which increases their proverbial influence. Why do I think the Big East is a joke – we were 3-0 vs. them.
*That said – Nova is a tough 1st round match up for los Tigres due to their good guards. If Clemson could shoot foul shots, they’d be a 2 seed.
*ASU’s boosters are mainly stating this on the flawed logic that the Pac 10 is the best conference in the country. They did beat a highly ranked RPI Xavier team, but…
*I’ll be picking UGa to beat Xavier in the first round. This will be the least talented team they’ve played in quite a while. Xavier is good, but I think the Cinderall run continues for the bulldawgs – talk about a story!
*Marquette gets a tough draw w/ Kentucky. Ouch!

I’d be willing to wager the Georgia win cost VT their spot.

  12. Wulfpack 03/16/2008 at 6:54 PM #

Oregon – 18-13 overall. Wins over Arizona, Stanford and Kansas State (all tourney teams).

Joe’s – 21-12 overall. Wins over Nova and Xavier once, and Xavier twice.

VT – 19-13 overall. One win over Miami.

Interesting quirk to Duke’s first round game … I think the over/under on total 3-pt. shots attempted might be 75 or so …

Belmont likes to shoot just as many, if not more 3-pointers than Duke … if both teams are cold, it could be really ugly 😉

Seth called out the NCAA and didn’t get the call.
Roy called out the refs and Handjob didn’t get the calls.
UNX will glide into SA ’cause the refs haven’t seen the calls.
oh yeah, Devils will too, ’cause the always Get The Calls.

ESPN & co. still crying about Herb and ASU not getting in … THEY WILL NOT LET IT GO

This was a really disappointing selection year for me. VT really got screwed. To be the 4th team in the number 1 RPI conference in the country and you don’t get selected, no excuse. The Big East having 8 is also a joke. You load up with how many teams in that conference? 17? 20? 25? And get almost half in the tournament. Don’t see it. My other disappointment was that it seems to me that conference tournament performance had very little impact on the selection committee’s seeding. Pittsburgh in at a 5 seed after their run through the Big East? UGA a 14 seed after their run through the SEC tournament? Taking Miami over Virginia Tech? poor, poor. Clemson is a very low 5 seed.

    absolutely PA^^^^

UNC’s side of the bracket is fine with me, except that IU as an 8 seed is a joke. I know we’re going to see the team that looks more like the team that was a top 10-15 team before the turmoil, plus they have two certified studs in DJ White and Eric Gordon. Glad the game is in Raleigh.

The bottom of the East is really tough. Tell me again how the #1 #1 ends up with Tennessee as its 2? That makes no sense. Louisville is also a tough 3.

Dook’s draw is the definition of cushy – did they let Katan select the teams personally – full o’teams who dook matches up with very well.

  21. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 7:26 PM #

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you guys are playing Arkansas, chris92heel … IMHO, Indiana has been overrated the entire season – which includes when Sampson was coaching them …

I do want to commend the committee for only having 4 Big Ten teams with none of them higher than a #3 seed … It’s a weak league and nobody in it was deserving of being any higher than a #3 seed, Wisconsin’s win @ Texas notwithstanding

  22. MrPlywood 03/16/2008 at 7:28 PM #

ASU early season non-conference wins: Princeton, LSU, Cal Poly, Florida Gulf Coast, Delaware St., Coppin St. Montana St., Idaho, St. Francis (PA)…. zzzzzzz. Non-conference RPI: 101, SOS 296. 9 of their 19 wins came against that “competition”. 5 and 10 to finish the season. Overall RPI 83. First round exit in tourney. They did have 5 quality wins, but they weren’t enough to offset the other evidence. Lunardi has them the 3rd team out.

    Enough already.

  23. redfred2 03/16/2008 at 7:31 PM #

I have to agree with chris92heel on this one. I mean, the NCAA selection comitteee obviously cannot let everyone into the tourney, but that bracket his team is in is way out of wack.

  24. chris92heel 03/16/2008 at 7:31 PM #

wufpup, that is very possible, but I don’t think Arkansas is very good either. As a #1, the thing you don’t want out of your 8/9 is an underachieving, but talented team. I’ve been on the other side of that twice – as an 8 seed in 1990 and 2000, underachieving heel teams knocked out OU and Stanford respectively.

  25. PAPacker 03/16/2008 at 7:31 PM #

This whole resume business via the RPI considers a teams performance through the season and I’m not convinced that is the best approach. I know this probably sounds wacked out, but who you beat in December does not mean you belong in the tournament now.
