N.C. State’s Fowler Backs Lowe, Says Chemistry an Issue (Updated 8:50 pm)

Audio of the interview.

“Winning is good, losing is bad,” Fowler said Wednesday morning in an interview on 99.9 FM The Fan. “We’ve been very frustrated this year. You have high expectations, and I think the fans did, and we have not lived up to them. That’s the huge frustration.”Lee Fowler

Fowler said some Wolfpack players have been “probably a little more interested” in their own playing time and performances than in team objectives.

“Chemistry seemed to be a bit squirrelly through the year,” Fowler said.He added, “And so it’s just been a battle throughout the year.”

But Fowler was encouraged by Saturday’s Duke game and is confident Coach Sidney Lowe can get the job done. Fowler brought in Lowe because Lowe knows what it takes to win a championship. “I understand that it’s all about winning and that’s what we live in everyday, and when you don’t win, it’s tough,” Fowler said. “But we also feel like we have the things in place to win in the future.”

UPDATE: Some helpful answers to questions posed in the comments:

Q: Can you elaborate on saying that Oblinger wants to get rid of Fowler? I really hope that’s true, but I always had the opposite impression, that current NC State leadership, Oblinger included, is less than committed to athletic excellence.

A: Your impression is 100% correct. The poster in question was pointing out how little desire Oblinger has to get rid of Jed.

Q: Why exactly is he going on radio now? Is this because he is feeling heat from the fanbase and needs to project the cause of a failure season on something other than him?

A: The compulsive need to hear himself speak (and have as many people as possible also hear him). He’s had that from the minute he got here.

Q: Did he give the interview from his house on Lake Gaston?

A: He usually makes it to the office on Wednesdays. Mondays and Fridays are a different story, perhaps.

Q: Will there ever be any accountability with his [Fowler’s] regime?

A: Are you kidding me? This is NC State. You can’t get in trouble for anything other than stepping on the toes of the Faculty Senate. Hell, if Chuck Amato hadn’t been offensively rude to a number of big donors and BOT members, we wouldn’t have even gotten rid of him!

by the way, it is probably the case that the Chancellor wants to get rid of Jeb as much as Jeb wanted to get rid of H.S. And in general, firing someone is a big commotion and cause you more work and headache. So, I don’t think we need more reason to give Sidney a growth period, naturally (since we have no choice : ), and I think this chemistry issue is as much Sidney’s failure as it is the individual’s on that team. Somebody need to pop in a VHS of “Coach Carter” or “The Hoosiers” or a seminar in “Fall back and your teammate will catch you”. This part pisses me off, either it wasn’t handled at all or it wasn’t handled effectively. Does Lowe have a living mentor he can fall back on? I’m sure Herb calls up Pitino on the phone every now and then.

Like what has been repeated many times on this site, I’m sure there are other factors that contributed to it. Honestly though, I don’t know if another bad year changes all that much in the leash length..

I have no problem with Sid at this point. But this is just what you’d expect from our dufus of an AD! We need Charlie Cobb as AD right NOW!

From what I hear, it just doesn’t seem to be a priority, but I hope I’m wrong.

What is the difference in Lee Fowler and a bag of poo?

You can get rid of a bag of poo

You could also light it on fire and leave it on a neighbor’s doorstep.

About starting J.J. If Ben was well enough to get minutes, he was well enough to start. But that said, I’m not sure it was the starting thing that did it. Ben and Brandon would have had a hard time adjusting their games this year regardless of who started and who didn’t. It probably also didn’t help in that first game that the students started chanting J.J.’s name. I remember looking at Ben, and he wasn’t smiling or clapping. Looks to me like it might have been better had Ben started and dropped about 10, and J.J. played 20-25 minutes and dropped 16. Hindsight. It sure is clear. Maybe.

^Howler – I agree. This chemistry thing is being blown out of proportion and is nothing but a weak excuse at this point. If there were any chemistry issues early on they should have been taken care of by now. Excuses, excuses.

See? No Jeb, and we’d be talking about football today, or the ACC tourney, or recruiting – not about whether starting JJ was a mistake in November.

If Sid can lure in Walls, Brown, and Favors, then he’ll be a great coach. If not, we won’t compete with Duke and UNC, and that’s what NC State wants. It means having a realistic chance at a National Championship. This season is not really relevant to the ultimate goal.

Norm Sloan had some teams with crappy chemistry (the Walker Brothers) and the kids involved still got their PT. I have a feeling that Norm let the whiners know in no uncertain terms that they would be better off somewhere else. I guess I was always so glad to get any minutes that not starting didn’t send me into a tail spin.

How could any of the guys who played all of last year with no help available from the bench be anything but happy that they had some help this year? I suppose you can fault Sidney for not managing expectations among the players very well. Hopefully he has learned his lesson on this.

    chem is all about valence.
electrons are shared to form a bond.
    electrons are NEGATIVE.
    we need more Positive Protons.
heck, i would accept an Isotope.

Howlie makes a good point. When Herb’s program was at the lowest of its lows, he told the only guy on the roster with NBA talent to walk. (Yes, Grundy made it for a couple of weeks, but …) Wilkins was the recruit that was supposed to put his program on the map. Didn’t work out and instead of letting it tear the team apart, Herb made a tough decision.

I am NOT saying Sid should tell JJ to walk or anything close, so please don’t read between lines that aren’t here. I am saying that I wouldn’t be so quick to underestimate chemistry. Maybe the guys should overlook things and just go out and play ball and who cares if they like the guy they’re passing the ball to. But these are human beings, and they’re 18-21 year olds to boot. I think they do play together better when they all get along. And I think any coach that underestimates that does so at the peril of his team’s success. Every guy has to be handled different. Some could give a crap about being in the spotlight. Some guys get jealous. Whatever. It’s the same in my office at work. A good boss knows their people well enough to motivate different types of personalities.

Of course, favoritism is nothing unique to this team. From what little I read on the subject, I believe the main reason Josh Powell bailed out after two years was he thought Hodge got more love from Herb and everyone else. Maybe someone with some better insight can comment on that.

I am sick of complaining about Lee. I am amazed that NC STATE’s leadership can’t see the obvious about this guy.

He has got to be among the worst D1 AD’s in the country.

Wellllllllllll doggies they some smart people on the internets afterall. Mr. Drysdale told me to invest my oil money in that Valence company when it was under 2 dollars and he sure was right. Now that we got the chemistry all straight Granny says we gonna have a party by the cement pond and she’s gonna make some possum stew with white castle burgers as an appetizer. Ya’ll come back now, ya hear?

“Winning is good, losing is bad” Not the most eloquent of statements from a head guy.

Is Fowler immune to censure? Will there ever be any accountability with his regime? We’ve talked about it ad nauseam but simply put, we are losing on all fronts and the buck stops with him.

  16. MrPlywood 03/05/2008 at 8:34 PM #

What in the world are the bball players doing in a Chemistry class? A real AD would make sure that their academic schedules are tailored to fit an athlete’s lifestyle. Those hard classes should be taken in summer school, if at all.

choppack you nailed it right on in your first post. its chapter and verse of the Amato saga. everything is fine. we dont like to loose but we know how to win championships.

Look, I have a hard time with the fact that you guys give a good man like Jed Clampett absolutely no respect.

Comparisons to him and that fella’ at State need to be re- evaluated.

Haven’t read through all the posts, but I’m glad Lee gave a vote of confidence to Lowe & Co. Herb’s recruiting really suffered, when his job was in jeopardy, i.e. not making the NCAA tournament in 2002 or 2003 would’ve cost him his job.

We had a period, when recruiting really suffered because of Herb’s job security issues. If Lowe’s going to be thrown under the bus this soon, we can just write off the 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes.

We NEED those two classes to be program changing classes or we might as well not hope for anything better in the near future.

Whether you like it or not, I think the best thing to do is to be fully behind Lowe and hope for the best. This year sucks, but sabotaging the 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes by putting Lowe’s job on the line this early, will only compound our problems.

Let’s just hope things in the athletics department work out for the best despite Lee’s indifference.

  21. cowdog 03/05/2008 at 8:58 PM #

Truth is NO ONE outside of each and everyone of those players wearing our school’s colors on their backs can explain the train wreck we witnessed.

We all have opinions, but the man in the mirror ( and locker room ) is the only one who knows.

And he ain’t talkin’…nor should he just to help us understand just what the f… happened.

  22. BillyVest 03/05/2008 at 9:01 PM #

Does Lowe have a living mentor he can fall back on?

Probably the NBA coaches he worked for, at this point, since both his college coaches – Sloan and Valvano – have passed on.

  23. blackdom 03/05/2008 at 9:09 PM #

Throw Sid under the bus he is driving this wreck so enough about that nonsense! “Because it hurt Herbs recruiting” well Herb is gone Sid is now recruiting ,if there is ? was? is going to be a chemistry problem? Why in Gods name did it take 2 years to come up with it? Please I liked the Players effort against duke all but JJ that is ,Javi even made a few shots with a person on hime ,but to be realistic duke missed a ton of wide opened shots in fact most of their shots were wide open. We blew a 13 pt lead with ben out and mj in of all people,no time out or foul at the end or a hand up when duke shot.
Lose 7 in a row and get a vote of confidence (see St.Johns another disgrace roberts is on a 5 yr plan too)

Did you know Lee was on Rocky and Bullwinkle show?? He was Mister Know It ALL. Tell me how many championships NCSU has won during his watch.Sid I will support for a while(HE GAVE US A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP) -Lee -what has he really given NCSU(O’brein fell in his lap-Sid volunteered for the job)I hope it really works out for us despite Lee’s inconpetence.

doesn’t Noam Chomsky go around now giving talks about how our political system does not represent a democracy? I need to go back and listen to one of these, but I’m sure he talks about the need for checks and balances that don’t really work or exist. so I guess that’s my analogy of the problem here. Or maybe meritocracy is the answer.
