Hold That Tiger! Clemson/Nova Live Blogging

So far today, the Tampa pod has seen upset wins by Western Kentucky (best game of the tourney so far), San Diego (guttiest performance of the tourney so far, winning after 2 best players fouled out in OT), and Siena (surprising rout of Vandy). We’ll see if the court has enough mojo to lift the Wildcats past the Tigers…but I don’t think it does. I feel confident that this will be the rarest of rarities around here – a happy liveblog.

10:01 – I like what I see so far. Great defensive intensity and an early 9-2 lead. Clemson playing with such passion you might think Nova slapped their mothers or something.

10:08 – 12-7 at the first media break. Nova has withstood the Tigers’ opening fury. We’ll see how effectively Clemson punches back. Personally, think Booker needs more looks in the low post.

10:17 – So far, a good case study of why the Big East wanted out of the ACC/BE Challenge. 22-12, Clemson. Refs just missed a blatant Nova travel, too – should still be 22-9.

10:25 – Tigers up 13 now. It could easily be 20. Nova looks absolutely shell shocked.

10:31 – All the CBS feeds cut to Louisville/Boise. WTF?

10:34 – Fucking CBS and their Wal-Mart level of technical sophistication. The ticker has Clemson up 18.

10:36 – This must feel like a conference game for Memphis. But who cares – we want Clemson carnage!

10:44 – Nova has cut the lead to 10. Not sure whether a feed of the Clemson game is going to be available to keep live blogging, though. Very irritating.

11:08 – Pretty clear no CBS feed (at least any of the 4 I have access to) will be going back to Clemson/Nova. I guess I will be able to blog the last 7 or 8 minutes once the dull Indiana/Arkansas game ends. Damn it.

11:15 – Tiger lead down to 5, Arkansas extends its lead to 9. Still, CBS won’t switch back on any feed. Assholes.

11:19 – Think WRAL finally switching back.

11:23 – Wow, this is a vintage NC State-like collapse.

11:30 – Nova travels constantly, and it’s never whistled.

11:34 – Nova takes the lead. Not looking good at all. Sorry if we jinxed you, Tiger fans.

11:48 – Yep, we jinxed ’em. And have to listen to the moronic ramblings of Tim Brando while Clemson can’t buy a basket. Oh well, at least we have “team playing Duke” and “team playing UNC” left to cheer for.

11:51 – I care about David Beckham even less than The Masters.

11:57 – Forget Midas, we have the Wolfpack Touch – everything we touch turns to shit. I’m checking out of this disastrous live blog.

Everyone’s shocked that Clemp couldn’t pull all the stop’s out in a big, late season game. Don’t they have 50 years of culture to back up the reasoning that could happen? Probably not because for a team that has more chock late season games that maybe anyone in ACC history, they are going to come in every variety and flavor.

They are a program on the rise for sure, they are leaving our sorry ass in the rear view. Purnell has pushed all the right buttons EXCEPT pulling only 2 out of 12 schollies for guys who can make a damn foul shot. If your going to play a ruff’n tumble aggressive style EXPECT the refs to get trigger happy on BOTH teams. Just be able to back it up when it’s your turn to cash in on the charity stripe.

I won’t tell you how good the Pac 10 is, but I will say that the Big East is dominating this tournament. They have SEVEN teams in the Final 32. That’s pretty damn incredible.

Complete collapse by Clemson. It just goes to show how hard it is to build a program. Purnell has done everything right. Clemson is going to be nasty next year. Watch out ACC.

Oglesby (sp) has shot Clemson right out of this game.

Every time that kid touched the ball he jacked it up. On long rebounds he would start shooting before he even caught the ball. Never got his feet set, never bothered squaring up. And his body language is that of a sulking baby. Whenever he gets called for a foul, no matter how legit, he beefs about it. Did that during the season a couple times when I saw them and again last night. He can be a good shooter when he doesn’t rush it, but he was a mental midget last night and it certainly didn’t help Clemson’s cause. They got panicky late and it cost them.

Oh, and what everyone else already said about the free throws. That’s ridiculous. Learn how to shoot them or don’t bother going to the tournament.

“Clemson is going to be nasty next year. Watch out ACC.”

Respectfully disagree – This has the definite look of a peak year for Clemson and at the end of the day, they are still Clemson. They started three very good seniors – Hammonds, Perry & Mays. They bring in three good player but athletically not near as good as they are losing.

With Siena waiting in the next round, this is just a terrible loss. Purnell is a really good coach but you can only go so far with good, not great players. I don’t think Purnell has ever won a game in the NCAA tournament.

This was a tough match-up for Clempson. Villanova is a team that has under-acheived all year. They have good, strong guards – and they are used to playing in the hack-fest that is the Big East. This loss is about as surprising as a Sendek-coached team collapse or Sidney saying “bigs” at least once in his press conference. In my “head” pool – I had the Tigres losing. (In my “heart” pool, I had them going a long way.)

That’s one thing I don’t like about relying on the press. We saw what can happen against teams w/ good guards who play aggressively. Unlike most teams who press, Clemson does play good half court D. However, a team w/ good guards should never let you get to that point. The foul shooting problems have killed them this year – and probably meant that they wouldn’t get too far in the tournament. They were fun, but frustrating to watch this year.

“I don’t think Purnell has ever won a game in the NCAA tournament.”

    That’s correct …

I think I have stated this one other time. Purnell will not be the head coach in 3 years. I have nothing against the man, and hell he may even be a decent coach, but it just so happens he coaches at clemson. Have they ever done anything in basketball? ever? This was the first year they have ever made an ACC final. WTF. You have witnessed the peak of what this team can accomplish. Its going to be down hill from here. They have more futility at Clemson than even state fans have endured. They can’t win one big game, they can come close, but in the end its still a loss. This is only setting clemsons expectations higher and because its clemson I just don’t see purnell reaching those expectations.

Clemson = Can’t Seal the Deal(Unless They Are Cheating!) I changed the channel when they were up by over 15 and didn’t even know the score until I checked my brackets a few minutes ago.

Does anyone see the resemblance of Oglesby and the little fellow with the banjo in Deliverance?

“Rim out and not hit the water”? That’s one of the better ones I’ve ever heard~!!!!ROFL!

Lovely nova lucky to get in the tourney , beats clemson, unx given a free pass to sweet 16 ,dook lucky to beat belmont ,and we finish dead last wow lets see what sid can do .

  15. Trip 03/22/2008 at 1:24 PM #

If Oglysby learned WHEN to take shots he would be shooting 50%. He’s got a beautiful jump shot and he’s shooting 41% taking ridiculous shots. If he took even half a second to set it up and didn’t jack up threes from mid court he’d easily be shooting 50%.

Oh yeah, and in the Duke game… Paulus has already flopped off a screen like he was hit by a shovel. Huggins is pissed after down 12-4 and called for a technical.
