Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

beo: given the history, I am far more willing to believe that the refs weren’t paying attention. They were probably more interested to see what K had to say at that point.

I’m a very irrational, over-excitable guy more times than not, but even I know this game doesn’t mean “we’ve figured some things out.” We played as well today as I think we could ask as fans and we were a little short with the help of the officials. Let’s not overreact and think we’re going to win the ACC Tournament. I freaking hope we do too, but just because we played with one of the top teams in the conference on one afternoon doesn’t mean we’re a top team in the conference. We’ll be crappy next year too unless Javi, who played brilliantly by the way, continues to improve and someone else shows up as something close to a backup ACC pointguard.

I think that the younger players saw what it takes and felt what the fans cheering great play feels like. We know that Smith, Gonzalez and others will be here a while. Yesterday shows them what it takes, and it leaves the lesson of “this and a little bit more.”

This is one of the few losses this year I would honestly say can build character.

Quotes from the Rocky Mount Telegram’s game story:

Javier Gonzalez, the much-maligned, often-debated, bad game-prone freshman point guard, was certainly not overwhelmed by the Blue Devils’ aggressive defense.

Early in the game, he turned toward Paulus, and the basketball hit Paulus squarely under the eye, drawing blood.

Later, he slapped Nolan Smith’s hand off of him.

“I was just trying to let the referees know that they had their hands on me,” Gonzalez said. “They’re going to tell me to get my hands off them, I want fairness.”

Damn straight. I wonder what he had to say about getting clocked at mid court.

The Telegram and several other papers took Sid to task for not fouling. I think that was the bigger problem than not getting the timeout with 3 seconds left. If we fouled with 40 seconds left we could have dragged this out for another 3-4 possessions if necessary.

By the way, Julius Mays scored 24 of his team’s 49 points as Marion High won their sectional title last night:

He and Scott Wood will keep on playing in the regionals next weekend. Good luck to them.

I will root for the roof collapsing, as I always do, O ye who admits need of therapy.

  9. Rochester 03/02/2008 at 10:17 AM #

I’ll be rooting for the roof to cave in on Duck and Orange County CC. Screw them both. The refs will be so confused as to who to give favorable calls to their heads might explode.

GAWolf, please do not misunderstand; my earlier posts were NOT implying that the problem has somehow miraculously solved over the course of one afternoon, or that this team will even make a halfway decent showing in the ACCT.

I’m just saying that some of younger players got a taste of what it really takes to be competitive in this league and also how it feels to really contribute in a bigtime setting like yesterday’s game. Those kids did well yesterday and I believe that maybe we will see something emerging that we haven’t had around here in a couple of years. It might be Javi, or Tracy Smith, or Trevor Ferguson, but somewhere among that group of younger players, a team leader, or leaders, must emerge.

No sense in beating a dead horse, but the call was bullsh*t, and Lowe’s failure to have his guys foul Duke on the last possession was inexplicable.

  12. Rochester 03/02/2008 at 10:38 AM #

First step toward finding a leader: Name Trevor Ferguson captain next year and give him a more prominent role as team spokesman. With a C on his chest he might have enough authority/respect to inspire some of his teammates to sack up and play with intensity.

  13. PackMan97 03/02/2008 at 11:17 AM #

Ya gotta love Fells getting tossed 15 feet as well at the end of the play without any call.

  14. westwolf 03/02/2008 at 11:28 AM #

Unless Lowe and his staff can teach their players to defend the three better and at least slow down dribble penetration, then his teams will never complete for the top half of this conference.

  15. jwrenn29 03/02/2008 at 3:30 PM #

Not only the call that was made that didn’t exist, but what about the call that existed but wasn’t made:

“I was calling it,” Lowe said. “The official was running by me and turned and looked at me. I called time out, and I didn’t get it.”

Very frequently it gets under 3 minutes and we’re playing Duke, the refs change how they were calling the game.

The BASKETBALL hit Paulus??!? I guess the RM Telegram was watching the game on the radio! Really classy, btw, of the State fans to boo a foul call when a deliberate elbow is thrown, cutting a guy’s face open. I suppose Gonzalez learned that “basketball” move from his boxer father. Nice. Should’ve been ejected.

^^ And Duke’s entire starting 5 should foul out of every single game.

    Don’t give me “should’ve”, asshole.

  19. devilwithabluedresson 03/02/2008 at 7:59 PM #

Intelligent reply. Does Duke get all the calls? Yes. Is this fair? Of course not. Success breeds getting more calls. “The rich getting richer” is just a fact of life. Throwing elbows and intentionally hurting people has no place in sports.

^^^ just to clarify, you are talking about Henderson mauling Hansborough last year right?

  21. Trip 03/02/2008 at 8:35 PM #

No no, Henderson was simply going for a rebound. Just like Javi was simply trying to use the space that he’s supposed to have while not being hand checked.

  22. devilwithabluedresson 03/02/2008 at 11:27 PM #

Art. 7. The following shall be considered excessive swinging:
    a. When arm(s) and elbow(s) are swung about while using the shoulders
as pivots, and the speed of the extended arm(s) and elbow(s) exceeds
that of the rest of the body as it rotates on the hips or on the pivot
    foot; or
    b. When the speed and vigor with which the arm(s) and elbow(s)
are swung is such that injury could result if another player were
    contacted.

  23. Harrisonmon 03/03/2008 at 12:00 AM #

Next year can’t be too bad. I can see a line-up(bench in parenthesis) of:

PG: Javi Gonzales(Farnold Degand, Julius Mays)
SG: Courtney Fells(Trevor Ferguson, Julius Mays)
SF: Johnny Thomas(C.J. Williams, Dennis Horner)
    PF: Ben McCauley
    C: JJ Hickson

For the Power Forward and Center spots, Lowe, of course, uses his substitution set of Costner for McCauley, McCauley for Hickson, and then Hickson for Costner, etc.

  24. Harrisonmon 03/03/2008 at 12:01 AM #

Forgot Tracy Smith. Throw him in there at the PF bench.

Section 14. Men’s Hand-Checking (Impeding the Progress of a Player)
To curtail hand-checking, officials must address it at the beginning of the game, and related personal fouls must be called consistently
throughout the game. Some guidelines for officials to use when officiating hand-checking:

    a. When a defensive player keeps a hand or forearm on an opponent, it is a personal foul.
    b. When a defensive player puts two hands on an opponent, it is a personal foul.
    c. When a defensive player continually jabs by extending his arm(s) and placing a hand or forearm on the opponent, it is a personal foul.

So really it should have been a double foul called on both of the players.
