Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

I didn’t realize there was a push off before the hook on the phantom foul call until I saw the video posted here. I was pleased today with the effort and hustle. There was only one time we got caught without turning around to find the ball in transition and our rebounding was much much better. I also can’t blame our free throw shooting for the loss when we shoot 24-27.

The Duke calls are just so discouraging because everyone in the ACC who plays them knows they are down 8-10 points at the opening tap. When they are forced to play a game where the refs call all of the fouls, their entire starting five fouls out. (See WFU game) the poster earlier that said Duke just dares the refs to call every foul is dead on. Until the league office grows a pair and mandates calling the fouls on Duke, even if the games last 3 hours, this will continue. If I were K and had a formula like this, I’d continue to use it.

I had to record the game today as I was tied up with kiddy activities, but just got done watching and all I can say is where has that team been all season? I am pissed as hell that we lost, but overly estatic with the way we played. That was the best display of team basketball I have seen from this school in a long time. I really gives me some hope that maybe something has clicked.

Johnson needs to be a walk on practice player and Costner needs to (re?)discover himself, but everyone else played absolutely great. I just hope this is a peek at what is to come.

I think we are all forgetting….it was Lowe that bashed the starters and prompted them to play harder. It obviously worked. I think we missed the free throws because we were tired….hence our conditioning needs to greatly improve in the off-season. But we played hard and had a good chance to win at the end. The refs are always against you when you play Duke. Lowe is going to have to step up and ride the refs more. I saw a glimmer of hope for next season today. We have the potential we just have to utilize it. I like Smith and TFerg. I agree with someone else who said Johnson doesn’t need to be in the game. Degand will be back next year and things really have no where to go but up.

That foul by McCauley is about as Ticky-Tack as it gets. I also do not agree with Costner getting called for the Intentional Foul earlier. I would like for the ACC for once to explain their obvious inconsistancy with calling the game. Hay if Costner ‘s Foul was Intentional then whenever a team is up by a few points with a minute or so remaining and in a halfcourt set then when the opposing team commits a foul it should be intentional——- auto Effing Matic. Hay at least Costner swatted at a shot (accidently knocking him in the head)that Lance Thomas was Taking. ACC officiating Sucks A$$ every now and then. You might say take the effing Red Goggles Off but I’m sorry those were BIG calls in this game, particularly the call against McCauley. In reality, hay its no excuse, we should have called a Timeout after we got the rebound, and we should have played a little better down the stretch but it never helps when you are playing not only against DOOK but Fighting another Battle against the EFFING REFS. All things Considered, this game was as exciting as it gets this season whether you have accepted the reality that we Suck, or you are still in Denial that we don’t. F*** K and his 800th. Words will never describe how much I Loathe them effing Devils.

I think it’s a real testament to just how bad things truly are right now for people to actually be satisfied and pleased and hopeful after of a good (losing) effort against one of our most-hated rivals in a game where we blew a big lead and played poorly down the stretch to give away.

Based on what we’ve seen this season, today’s effort was the outlier, the anomaly, not the trend. In fact, it infuriates me even more to see an effort like today’s knowing we’re 4-11 now and haven’t shown that kind of effort all season.

I don’t understand what, exactly, there is to be pleased with — playing hard for a change?

Wolfpup, you read my mind. Looks like MJ should be playing D2 or D3 ball. But many on this board (including me) previously wrote off Javi and Trevor as D1 players. Now they’re getting hallelujahs.
I hope you’re right and they’re trying to get Johnson over the hump. If not, then you’re right, there is no point in playing him.

I’ll amend my previous comment. If I cure cancer (and I will) UNC AND Duke must disband their pograms before I release it. And every official that screwed state must kiss the base of the Belltower… Nah, I ain’t vindictive 🙂

    Some random questions/comments:

    1. How many offensive fouls did the refs call against us? 10????
    2. If our team plays like they did today against Wake, they will win. If they play like that again in the acct they might make it to the final (but not win). Does this ring a bell? Would that be considered a pattern? Would that concern anyone else? To me it would justify why thousands of fans have gone crazy with this team this year.
    3. Javi was extraordinary today from an offensive standpoint. He refused to pick up the dribble, was constantly moving, minimal turnovers, penetrated when needed, drove/finished when needed, nailed open shots. From a defensive standpoint he has work to do.
    4. We miss Degand’s defense. He would not have allowed all the PGs we faced in the last 6 games have career days. I wish there is a way we could play Javi on offense and Degand on defense next year.
    5. Back to offensive fouls. I think this is how you can tell which way the officiating leans. Today, it was CLEARLY NOT CONSISTENT for the two teams.
    6. Although JJ struggled to score in the post today, I thought he finally did a good job recognizing the double teams and kicking the ball out for some open shots today.
    7. We scored 86 points today against dook?????????

    I agree with LRM completely.

We will never cure cancer.. too complicated.. it will always be locate it and cut it out.
There is hope.. but I just think we will have to wait til next year.

LRM, I’m extremely disappointed w/ the loss and not satisfied … but I am pleased with the effort level today

Yes, it does make you wonder where this type of effort has been; but if I’m going to criticize them for no effort I’m also going to give them credit when it’s due

I don’t know how to describe it, but it was really fun at the game today and I had positive vibes throughout … this season has had more than it’s share of disappointments, but today’s disappointment came after a great effort in what should have been a win against a good / superior opponent … I’d much rather have that type of disappointment than another head-scratching effortless loss

There were many positives that came out of today’s game in my opinion despite a bad outcome

If they play this hard consistently in the ACCT, they just might have a shot…

  13. rockpile 03/01/2008 at 7:46 PM #

after seeing all the devil charges granted in the first half as well as the demarcus hook, i find it coincidental that two words have the same amount of letters…..ten. krzyzewski and c**ks**ker. i understand if i’m banned, but i was stuck in traffic with a bunch of devil fans. oh, and none of them have ever visited the “duke gardens”.

I beg to differ… It’s a site-specific issue, but the same principle. Nail the virus (working on it); then simply find site-specific drug carriers (literature precedent for nearly every organ).

Oh, and Duke ticks me off. 🙂

After stepping away from it and thinking about it here are my thoughts

    1) This game just shows how bad we have been mailing it in all year. If we play like this all year we are in the tournament. It makes me sad
    2) I am glad Javi used his elbow. It was called a foul on him but the truth is Paulus was all over him and he should have had that room to move. Bad call. But it took Paulus out of the game and seemed to energize Javi.
    3) We have talent and again it makes me sick
    4) ACC refs are the worst in the league

Lastly, I have decided this team is the Wizard of Oz
    no brain – Fells
    no heart – Costner and
    no courage – MJ

I hope Sid has learned from this year.

I enjoyed the effort and execution this game (except for the end) but that should be the norm not the exception.

Regarding Marques Johnson, I’m 62 freakin’ years old and I think I can take him one on one. Not for long, but he’s pathetic!

Regarding denial, acceptance, etc. I forgot the game was on and replaced half of the shutters on my house this afternoon. I guess that says “something”. It’s going to be a long night sorting through all of this analysis, but it sure beats the other sites! Keep it going guys!

  17. Rick 03/01/2008 at 7:59 PM #

Someone one Packpride is saying Lowe tried to call a TO but was blown off by the refs.

  18. john of sparta 03/01/2008 at 8:03 PM #

    1. refs always call the 2nd/reaction foul.
    2. make FT’s and win….that’s how the heels stomped the birds.
    3. defense and more defense and more intense defense. it even
wins in HS BBall (Middle Creek).

Sorry BAC79, Let’s also remember that if it were up to a lot of us then Fergs would have never seen the light of day again I stopped reading after about 15 posts because I could that everyone was negative about we all witnessed today. My apologies.

So, here we have people who have watched a coach and a group of kids struggling all season long with something that no one has had an explantion for, and most of those same people were expecting to see nothing less than a thirty point blow out (myself included), and rightfully so, and we lose by O…N…E P…O…I…N…T in the FINAL SECONDS, AND, after a bad call to boot.

    Nope, I will never understand.

I only implied earlier that certain players were still being given a chance and that there may be a good reason for it. wufpup came right out and said it. He said to think of Ferguson’s earlier play and what everyone thought of him earlier.

I could name off a list of Wolfpack player like that. I think the problem NOW is that the list I’d rattle off would probably pre-date many of the posters here on SFN. The impatience about players around here is a product of coaching. And when I say that I mean former coaching. Even in this terrible season we are witnessing (SOME) young players who are listening (not quite as good as T Hansbrough, but) and evolving into something that no one may have thought was possible a few months back. And they’re doing while wearing Wolfpack BB uniforms!

I know that’s not enough to make this season even bearable, but it is something that I enjoy watching as much as anything about the game of college BB.

IT’S TOO LATE, I know, but I think they (coaches and players alike) may have jumped a major hurdle today.

Too much time has been wasted and I’m not predicting anything further than this, but I believe that they will beat WFU, and then they will go into the ACCT with new energy and a different attitude.

Whatever the spread, I’d take Wake and the points next weekend.

Sorry about that last post, I tried to paste a comment I had copied from wufpup, and messed it all up.

BJD, I have some info for you…should I use the same email that we used last week? Or do you have a different home one?

If this has already been mentioned then sorry for the repeat. In the post-game comments Lowe said that he was trying to call a time-out but the Ref just ran right by him & apparently didn’t see. So, if you take Lowe at his word then the plan was to call a T.O. but you have to wonder why he wasn’t jumping up & down, & screaming in his face.

  24. legacyman 03/01/2008 at 9:46 PM #

This should end the talk about the team having no heart or desire. The kids clearly wanted this game very badly and but for a bit of misfortune would have notched the W. Javi gets clotheslined on a no call and dook tears down the floor. Ben gets hooked and he is called for the foul.

Still, had we hit the FTs and handled the ball just a bit better we would have the smirky smiles rather than the hindends from durham.

  25. Rick 03/01/2008 at 9:56 PM #

“This should end the talk about the team having no heart or desire.”

For me it does the opposite. It makes me ask where was all this for the whole year?
