Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

^Rice is absolutely lighting up chapel hill college so far today (glad it’s not against us … again) and the ugly Ga Tech – Wake Forest slogfest is mercifully coming to a close …

looks like GT will pull it out in OT and take Wake’s slim NCAA hopes with it …

I am proud of the way the team played. The whole team. They played hard and smart and deserved to win. If they play like that in the next few games left they will win. Congratulations Wolfpack!!!! I can take a loss win they play the way they did today.

Plywood – zero chance they’d call 5-seconds on Paulus… although they rang Javi up twice in the same situation at Duke last time around. No joke – I don’t think the ref had even hit “3” yet on his count… and it’d been a good 6-7 seconds.

“^ How did they lift the bus? They still freaking LOST. They have LOST seven games in a row. They are 4-11 in ACC play.”

BJD, come on now, do I really need to answer that question? How about if we take a different perspective and look beyond this one god awful season.

But to answer your original question, let’s see, let me count the ways…

A previously lethargic offense shots 60% and almost scored 50 point in the first half on one of best the defensive squads in the country.

Players that normally do not start and have otherwise gotten very limited PT came in and right off the bat were playiong with confidence, and they showed what they’re really capable of in this league.

McCauley season high, Javi career high, and Tracy Smith career high, all in scoring.

We turned over it more than Duke, but that is Duke’s strength. It’s not a good thing but it is fairly expectable with just about anyone Duke faces.

We out rebounded Duke by around ten. (I think)

Grant had a solid game in many areas but it was not his typical all-around game. Fells did not have a good game, and that one lazy pass at halfcourt would have usually signalled that the game was over for all intents and purposes. Not today though, they hung in their and played harder than all season. It’s unfortunate that the major lapses by the players (as well as the officials) occurred at the end of the game, but in the first few minutes or at crunchtime, a missed FT or a missed defensive assignment

I could go on and on, but.

Is there anything left to say?
    A d*mn shame.

A prayer is lifted up for Sid today. With all that’s going on in his life right now, that loss dents the bottom of the grave hole.

Everything’s in place for the WFU game to be the worst of the season. Nothing to play for, no reason to hustle, no reason to care. WFU knows they have to win to get an tourney shot, and they will play their best game of the year at Lawrence-Joel.
This one also requires much prayer.

The decision by Lowe and his staff to repeatedly put Marques Johnson in the game is really bizarre.

    He can barely dribble

    Can’t pass

    or shoot

and nearly falls over his shoes at least once a game

Since Fergy has shown the ability to do all of these things better, especially dribble, shoot, and play defense, why in the world does our staff continue to play such an inept player?

And let’s not forget, that UT essentially asked him to transfer because he lacked the basic basketball skills to ever play there.

“The decision by Lowe and his staff to repeatedly put Marques Johnson in the game is really bizarre.”

I agree with that and I don’t understand why he gets so much more PT than he seems to deserve. The only thing that I can come up with is that maybe he is a much better player in practice than anything he’s shown on gameday, and the coaches/Lowe are determined to get him over the hump.

That may not be the case at all, and if it isn’t, I have no idea what Lowe is thinking in that scenario.

This was probably the best effort I’ve seen all season but it’s too little, too late.

As for the subject of the thread, the foul on Big Ben, you have to figure on a certain amount of that crap when you play Dook.

Dook had much more to lose today than State had to gain. The fork was stuck in our season 6 games back.

I didn’t like the result, obviously, but thoroughly enjoyed the game. Something I haven’t been able to say often over the past couple of months.

I am encouraged about next year, for multiple reasons (in no particular order):

    1. Javi has improved tremendously. Now imagine further improvement during the offseason, and coming into next season without having to come off an injury (hopefully).

    2. Fergie and Tracy Smith are players who deserve to see the court. Earlier in the year, I didn’t think that about Fergie, and I just didn’t know about Smith, since I hadn’t seen him play much. Both have been quite impressive lately, and against ACC competition. So that’s two more players for next year.

    3. I expect Sid has learned a lot this season, and I think it will carry over into improved coaching, motivation, preparation, etc. for next year and beyond. And I’d like to think Sid won’t experience as much personal turmoil this offseason and next season as he did this year (his son’s arrest, his father’s passing, and his mother’s heart attack come to mind). So coaching should improve IMO.

    4. I hold out hope that J.J. will stick around for another season. I doubt he is a lottery pick, and I am not even certain he is a first rounder; if so, I’d expect him to be a late first rounder. If he plays another college season and improves, he could elevate himself into the lottery. And that can make a difference not only in $$$ but in playing time. Look at Cedric Simmons as an example. He was a first rounder, but does he actually play? And J.J. has indicated that there is no hardship issue for him.

    5. I also hold out hope that Fells and Costner can come around and more consistently show the top notch ability they have shown previously – Fells occasionally and Costner last season. Both of them are talented enough to be All ACC caliber players.

In the first half, Javi had two quick fouls and Johnson had to carry some minutes.

In the second, it seemed that Javi was getting exhausted and needed a blow.

    ^About playing Johnson –

Sidney and staff have decided to have two point guards with Fells as the emergency … I’m not saying I agree, but they made a commitment to playing and developing both Javi and Marques at the PG position and have stuck with it, for better or worse

Johnson appears to be a “miss” and the staff should be criticized for that, but I will not criticize them for making a decision to play two players at the point with limited skills / resources … What more is there to say? The PG position has been a work-in-progress all season

The #1 PG was in BS foul trouble today, so the staff went to the #2 guy … last year we were saying Fergs was a disaster; earlier this season even people were vomiting through their cpu’s at the idea of Fergs playing point … The staff has made a decision to have Fergs play at the 2/3

If Johnson improves his play next season as much as Fergs has this season, then this exercise may have been worth it … You can only make so much lemonade out of lemons

There is something to be said about not doing things soley out of desperation … earlier this season I did not think Javi was an Acc caliber player; yet the staff stuck with him and I would’ve never believed I would ever see a performance out of Javi like I did today … and it was against Dooook

The staff hasn’t given up on Marques, and they wanted to see him turn into a solid option at PG … It hasn’t happened, even though we needed it to … That’s the way it goes … Let’s also remember that if it were up to a lot of us then Fergs would have never seen the light of day again

    ***

Turned out to be a real s*it day … dooook beats us w/ BS and chapel hill college rallies from a large defecit … joy

Some of you guys are a piece of work. YOU CAN’T CREDIT THE TEAM WHEN IT PLAYS HARD-COACH WHEN HE GETS HIS TEAM UP TO PLAY A RIVAL.THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES ALL YEAR FOR THIS TEAM-I THINK SID DID A VERY GOOD JOB COACHING TODAY-IT HAS BEEN A HARD TEAM TO READ ALL YEAR(SO I HAVE HEARD FROM THE INSIDE)THE SOPH’S,FRESHMEN HAVE THE TALENT TO BUILD ON FOR THE FUTURE.SO GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDITS DUE.YES ,WE DIDN’T WIN BUT I WILL TAKE OVER THE LAST 6 GAMES.I AM PROUD OF JAVI HE TRULY BE CAME A ACC GUARD TODAY.SID WILL NOT EVER GIVE UP ON THIS TEAM OR THIS UNIVERSITY-AND I WILL NOT GIVE UP ON HIM-SO YOU CAN GO DROWN IN YOUR NEGATIVITY(NOT REALLY A FAN OF NCSU) GO STATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

    ^BAC79

So you’re saying they played with no heart today, eh?

They missed a few free throws, didn’t stay on the perimeter or with their assignments late, and THEN they got a bad call by the officials. ALL at the end.

They could have won the game by ONE POINT, just like Duke did, but it just didn’t happen today.

    SO WHAT?

I’m not going to sit here and piss and moan all over the best effort I’ve seen out of this group of players all season.

In my book anyway, if there is any such thing as a “good loss”, that was it today.

  14. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 5:53 PM #

As for Grant leaving, I wonder if it’s POSSIBLE that MJ could work his way into Grant’s role (backing up Fells maybe). He appears to be a fish-out-of-water PG like Grant and Fells were last year, and he is a little oversized to play the point, much like Grant/Fells. Remember how much Grant had to improve to be as good as he’s been this year. He used to turn the ball over, had questionable shooting ability, and improved in both areas, due in part to the fact that his position changed.

SFN: DO WHAT? Jeez. Johnny Thomas would be seeing a lot of playing time as a freshman had he not gotten hurt. Dennis Horner and Marques Johnson probably need to transfer if they ever want to play basketball again.

The elbow push off was the first thing I noticed and I wasn’t even looking for that. Damn shame there.

Anybody else understand the hyrid zone we played today? Outstanding. Nearly a box in one on the weak side shooter, very nice.

But we sadly went away from it in the last 2 mins. or so.

Game balls to Javi, T Smith, Ferguson. McCauly with a nice game, but a couple of key lapses down the stretch. Grant…well wish he would have been there in the end. Fells still the dictionary image of enigma. Hickson worked hard early and Lowe saw what was coming.

Big goat horns for the usual suspects, left unnamed ’cause I can’t bring myself to continually rip a 20yr old kid that is good enough to play D1.Would rather just not see them play again in State unis. I might be wrong, but I have it as 7 turnovers between the unnamed in limited playing time. Too bad limited time wasn’t limited enough.

“It took Sidney until late February to get tough with the team and make any real adjustments. Too little, too late.”

I totally agree with that BJD. Halftime of New Orleans/ECU/WCU games should’ve been when the light turned on.

All I can say is that I hope Lowe has REALLY learned something today and that he continues to change his approach.

8-3 is what this loss drops coach lowe to in games decided by 4 pts or less in his two yrs here. i had a great seat for the demarcus hook. unbelieveable, well not really. play tracy smith more and we’ll go from there…

  18. cowdog 03/01/2008 at 6:05 PM #

Something happened with the team and coach after FSU debacle…Agreed? Don’t want to beat a dead horse, but someone tell me what they saw with that zone Sid cooked up. I for one was most impressed. And bet ya’ dollars to donuts that K was too.

  19. gopack968 03/01/2008 at 6:07 PM #

No matter what you got to love the way the team played as a whole. Not perfect, not everyone, not the whole game… but as a team for the first time in a while.

    I hate Duke. Hate. Duke.

  20. PackScout 03/01/2008 at 6:09 PM #

Forget the bad call against McCauley at the end. We still could have won if we converted our free throws at the end. Both Javi and Ben should have made both. We gave them a chance then played soft defense the final 1:30 seconds. While still up by three we should have pressured the in-bound pass and trapped the guard to force them out of their comfort zone and make them force a shot to tie the game. Instead we stayed back and Duke brought the ball up uncontested and set up their effective half court offense. That was a hug coaching mistake! We pressure their guards brining the ball up the court and we win! We let Duke take open shots at the end and they converted.

  21. BAC79 03/01/2008 at 6:20 PM #

Redfred: Go read my previous posts. I never said no heart today. In fact I said just the opposite. I only commented that it took until the second game before the end of the season for us to see it.

  22. westwolf 03/01/2008 at 6:22 PM #

Lowe’s random substitutions, including his discovery at this late date that Smith and Fergy are good players(yes, I know, they have probably grown in practice over the year blah blah)could be even stranger next year.

Can anyone on this board or anywhere say with certainty who will be our point guard next year by Acc time? How about the rest of the starting five? Fells, JJ..but what about after them? And will JJ continue to start but then be on the bench at crunch time?

This “go with the flow” subbing guys in based on the “situation” will not be a recipe for success at the college level.

Get a freakin’ rotation of 7-8 guys and let them play.

  23. mroli 03/01/2008 at 6:27 PM #

anyone got a video of the missed Javi clothes-line foul at mid court that was not called? that to me was the worst no-call of the game, and led to the intentional on Costner…

I was at the game and I have to say that this one hurt more than all of the others.

  24. RagingWolf 03/01/2008 at 6:35 PM #

I was at the game too. I find it interesting that those of us who were at the game are happy with today’s effort and performance while the others are not. I obviously am not happy about the outcome but I finally felt proud of our team (1st time this season).

I also want to thank GG. Today was his last home game for us. He has frequently frustrated us with his turnovers throughout his career BUT, he is a GOOD KID. Before the game started my friend’s son went to the railing to stick out his hand for a possible high-five from anyone leaving the court (after pre-game warm-ups). GG saw the kid, went out of his way to come over and shake his hand and then offered to sign the kids “huggie” (they were handed out at the entances). CLASSY MOVE. After the disappointing turn the season has taken he could have easily kept his head down and moved on. Gavin, I wish you the best and thank you for being a student athlete we can be proud of.

  25. PapaJohn 03/01/2008 at 7:00 PM #

At the end of last game I was convinced the team had given up for the season. But then Sid got nasty with them and called them out in the press. The next game, new starting line up, an entirely differently looking team. A team to be proud of that played a top ten team very close. Sid may not be a great coach (yet?), but without any question, he’s making a difference. Give him some players and watch out.
I’m looking forward to our off season “kill ’em versus keep ’em” player evaluations. I think we have a few keepers.
