Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

Guys, I posted a copy of the “foul” in the top of the article, if you haven’t seen it.

  2. wufpup76 03/01/2008 at 3:58 PM #

I’ve seen some comments questioning some of Sidney’s decision or outright saying he coached poorly today … I have to disagree … Did I have some questions about a few decisions? – Yes … That said, Sidney should be given credit, even if it is for today only, for the mix-and-match zone defenses that we showed them … those zones were very effective at times against Dooook today … I know, they hit a ton of 3’s, but they were primarily off of dribble penetration or defensive breakdowns … when the players were being disciplined in the zone it was extremely effective today

I was at the game and all of the players seemed enthusiastic, and Sidney was very encouraging … I know some of you don’t want to hear it, but we may not have been in the game if Sidney hadn’t have made a few calls and adjustments … I just want to give him credit where it’s due while being all for objective criticism

I don’t really have a lot of negatives from today other than the raw, awful taste I have in my mouth from that BS loss

Bottom line for Sidney & co. today is that we outplayed a fairly good team today yet lost … Kerkooski even told Sidney that and admitted it after the game

F the refs and their freaking Duke charge/flop calls

  3. BJD95 03/01/2008 at 4:00 PM #

It took Sidney until late February to get tough with the team and make any real adjustments. Too little, too late.

  4. RAWFS 03/01/2008 at 4:00 PM #

^ Agreed 100%, wolfpup. This loss ain’t on Sid. And it ain’t on our players either.

And BJD, you are so very right. This season will probably go a long way to pushing Sid up the learning curve but he really should be proud of his team today.

I intentionally didn’t watch, but I went back and reviewed the last 3 minutes on DVR. Honestly, I think the bigger travesty is the pace at which the top official was counting 5 seconds when Paulus had the ball… on the last possession, just as Duke called timeout, that official had counted to two or three, but each “second” was about 3 seconds of real time. I know they normally count slow, but I’ve never seen anything like that.

All that being said, I blame us for failing to execute in the last two minutes at either end of the court. Duke got wide-ass-open 3’s twice in a row to tie the game, and we either turned it over or missed free throws at the other end.

This was our best effort, and it still wasn’t enough… the better team still won.

I’ll support your view of things. I actually saw a team that tried to win today.
Yes, some poor player decisions late and maybe some coaching decisions that in hindsight could be questioned but this is the sort of play I haven’t seen from this team all season.
Maybe Lowe’s comments after the last fiasco finally got through to the players we were depending on all year (somehow I think the lack of PT had more of an effect).
this is the type of play I saw during my years on campus (Sloan was the coach then) and I hope this wasn’t a “one and done” as far as effort is concerned.
If this team had played with this intensity all season we would be looking at a sure NCAA team.
The loss was frustrating but I was glad to see some heart shown on the court today.

I haven’t read any comments because I just finally cooled off after a nice run around Lake Johnson, and I knew I’d just get all riled up again and I want to enjoy the rest of my Saturday. I’m sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but it will make me feel a little better to vent…

Let me get this straight: we’re down one with 18 seconds to play and our coach, a former national champion point guard, opts — instead of fouling a team that, while shooting 81% for the game, has shown its trouble at the line late in games of recent — to play defense in a situation where the likely worst-case scenario on a foul is for Duke to hit both free throws and we’d be trailing by three with 10-15 seconds remaining, which is more than ample time — even for us — to get across halfcourt and at least set up a game-tying three point attempt?

Instead, he opts to play defense rather than foul, where the WORST-CASE scenario is that Duke hits a three, the lead is four, and the game is over; or slightly better, it plays out like it did, and we have less than five seconds to set up a halfcourt prayer by one of our big men for the win?

The cuss word I want to use for this hasn’t even been invented yet.

Nothing anyone can say to me after that will ever convince me Sidney Lowe has any idea how to coach or how to lead this program. Call me a bad fan, but I have no use for him or this team anymore and I’m glad it’s almost over.

Anybody watching Wake/GT? What an awful, ugly game that is.

Hey guys. I’m Rob Roberts, the videographer for newsobserver.com. Saw your post about this. Here’s my view of the foul call on McCauley. Not the best angle on it, but thought it might help the discussion.

    http://videos.newsobserver.com/?a=player&id=1746840

BJD: Thanks for the link. There’s still no foul. Not even debatable.

  11. Rochester 03/01/2008 at 4:19 PM #

Wasn’t it Sid’s coach (a kid named Jimmy V) who invented fouling at the end of a game? We really should have. Maybe another Javy elbow to Paulus’s eye.

  12. RAWFS 03/01/2008 at 4:20 PM #

LRM – I see your side of the argument, but let’s keep in mind that Duke’s backcourt defense is hellacious and the refs would have never called a foul unless someone had a broken bone…and maybe not even then. That’s not referee bias so much as it is the fact that the zebras swallow their whistles almost every time at the end.

We were out of timeouts, right? If that is the case, your scenario makes more sense to me because they could have quickly inbounded and gotten into the halfcourt and then set a play up.

BJD: No. We had 2 TOs left.

Either way, the two Gonzalez missed free throws at the end matter every bit as much, as did Grant’s fouling out early. There are probably a hundred little reasons why we lost that game, but in my view this team took a major step forward in terms of effort and heart. Maybe it’s too late for this season, but I saw some players out there that will be back next year that played as hard as nails today. At least there’s that.

  13. Rochester 03/01/2008 at 4:22 PM #

I think we still had two timeouts left at the end. Maybe we can carry them over to the Wake game.

^^Rob, nice work. Got any footage of Javy getting clotheslined?

  14. RAWFS 03/01/2008 at 4:24 PM #

I stand corrected then, BJD. Even though there was a game reset just before the game on TV, I was a tad emotional and a few cold Wolfpack Ales into the wind. I thought we were out of TO’s because we didn’t use them.

My bad, and LRM you are right about it being a bad strategy.

    Damn. Just DAMN.

  15. LRM 03/01/2008 at 4:27 PM #

Don’t even get me started on not using the timeouts.

That’s like not using all of your ammo in a battle so you can take it back to base when it’s over.

  16. wolfonthehill 03/01/2008 at 4:28 PM #

Rob – that’s the best angle I’ve seen, and it is truly a deplorable, unforgivable call.

  17. RAWFS 03/01/2008 at 4:31 PM #

Yup, you cannot take the timeouts with you.

  18. GoldenChain 03/01/2008 at 4:32 PM #

Two good thing: 1) we FINALLY played up-tempo, 2) we threw in some zone defense.
IN addition the players were all energized.

  19. wolfonthehill 03/01/2008 at 4:33 PM #

OK – on a positive note, anyone watching Tyrese Rice light uncch up?

He’s got 31 on 8-for-8 shooting from 3-point range in the first half.

50-36 BC, 1 minute to go in the first half.

  20. wolfonthehill 03/01/2008 at 4:35 PM #

Excuse me – make that 32 – and going to the line for two.

  21. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 4:35 PM #

^Well, you can at least see the contact from that angle, but it’s still nothing close to what I would call a foul, and the call is late.

  22. RAWFS 03/01/2008 at 4:39 PM #

I honestly think it is a no-call at best. Nelson is hooking, and even though I am definitely biased, it looks rather incidental to me. Since Nelson went out of bounds after both incidents, I think it should have been Wolfpack ball. But that’s just me. There were certainly stronger bumps on both sides of the coin where there was no call at all.

But then again, we all know that ACC referees are maddeningly inconsistent.

  23. MrPlywood 03/01/2008 at 4:40 PM #

Thanks for that video robrob. I take it back, the refs blew a couple. In that tight of a game, to make that call? To top it off, he not only hooked Ben, but I think he travelled as well. Ben was in position, moved his feet, arms up…

wolfonthehill – when the whistle blew on that Duke timeout, I yelled “5 seconds!” I thought we had the call. But no…

Still stoked about that Javi elbow though. 🙂

  24. BJD95 03/01/2008 at 4:43 PM #

Wake going to lose at GT (w/o Causey). Deacs need a win in Blacksburg, against us (no problem), and on ACCT Thursday to get bubble consideration.

  25. RAWFS 03/01/2008 at 4:43 PM #

Oh yeah and nice pushoff with the elbow there, Demarcus. (Right before the contact that was whistled.) In some leagues that’s called a charge.
