Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

BJD: you’ll have to explain the “math” comment. I didn’t see the game, so tell me what the situation was please.

BAC79: and why will we know at the end of next year if he can coach? If he can’t coach this year according to you, what makes you think he can do it next year? Isn’t a bad coach – a bad coach, i.e. no help for him?

  2. westwolf 03/01/2008 at 2:55 PM #

Sometimes your rankings in the conference reflect the quality of your coaching staff. Does anyone honestly believe that we have the worst talent of any team in the Acc?

We need to get some better assistant coaches who can coach defense and rebounding.

  3. BAC79 03/01/2008 at 2:56 PM #

If we see this kind of effort the rest of the year no matter how many games that may be, then we should have something to build on for next year. Let’s hope so.

STF, I only was questioning the fanhood of BAC79 because he had issues logging in. I sort of thought it was funny. I know who you support BAC79. This game has got me wanting to go back to college, get a phys-ed degree, become an intrameural referee and hope to make it to the ACC so I can write the wrongs here.

Ismael: I truly believe Sid is struggling transitioning from the NBA to college. I haven’t written him off as a coach just yet. I do believe the lack of effort from the players this year has been very disturbing and doesn’t speak well for his motivational skills.

I’m not throwing him under the bus just yet; however, 20 years of watching mediocre basketball strains ones nerves for sure.

At any rate time will tell.

Anyone want to bet that Sportscenter’s highlights of the game won’t include the hooking by Nelson but will include the hard foul by Costner after not showing the closeline by Thomas that caused it??

  7. Ismael 03/01/2008 at 3:02 PM #

FWIW, i don’t doubt that the assistants are important, hell the whole thing is important: the system and those running it.

btw, my mom called me and told me about the forearm shiver to Paulus. But if you guys will recall, i thought it was the first duke game where Javi really showed he can play in this league, he burned Paulus alot that game.

So someone throw that up on youtube, i wanna see that. Unfortunately it probably made ‘Hole fans happy to see Paulus have blood drawn.

Best overall effort of the year. What we have needed for a long time.
Intentional Foul was WRONG and fathom fouls showed up to all a Duke win.

Bias within this league is getting old

Bynum: No problem here. I thought for a minute you might have thought I was some fan from another school lurking here. Not the case, I am a State fan through and through. But, being a 79 grad, I’m not getting any younger. 20 plus years of frustration with State athletics continues.

The sad thing is we can’t do a whole lot about it because none of us are driving the bus.

Horrible call against Ben. I didn’t like the call on BC either. We got some calls today for a change, but we left too many points on the table. In the end it was our game and we gave it to Duke. Shame. My big beef is where has this effort been? We acted like we cared and played hard for 40 minutes. Can we not do this every game? Glad to see Smith coming on and Javi played well. Lots of pluses today, but it would have been nice to get the W, like we should. Hope any recruits enjoyed the game. We have so much to offer and can be relavent again if we keep working hard.

The 5 second shot/game clock differential means that Duke could hold the ball and not release until 6 or 7 seconds overall remained. Which is EXACTLY what they did. Here are possible outcomes to that strategy, from best to worst:

    1) Shot does not hit rim. State would then inbound the ball at 3/4 court, with a fraction over 5 seconds remaining.

    2) Shot hits the rim, State gets rebound fairly cleanly, with between 3 and 4 seconds remaining. This is what actually happened. We were fortunate to get off the shot we got (open 27-footer from McCauley, which he makes maybe one time out of 20). The best thing we could have done here was quickly advance to half court and call timeout with maybe 2 seconds left. Still not in a great position against a pressure defensive team like Duke (especially with no Grant available).

    3) Shot misses, rebound is tipped around for a bit. State gets ball in the lane with maybe 2 seconds left. Must call timeout for a baseball pass or heave up halfcourt prayer.

    4) Shot misses, Duke rebounds. State must foul with 3 or 4 seconds left (instead of around 30).

    5) Shot goes in. Duke leads by 4 with 4-5 seconds left. Game over.

Anyone still think this is a good idea?

We should have gotten the W, instead we got “the K”.

  13. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 3:10 PM #

    -Javi clotheslined
    -Costner’s foul not intentional
-Scheyer gifted a charge (obviously a block in the replay)
    -Nelson gifted a block

Duke definitely got a few calls today, but during the game it didn’t feel all that uneven. Perhaps we got some questionable calls, too, but I can’t recall any. Selective memory, I guess.

  14. BAC79 03/01/2008 at 3:12 PM #

One last observation. The last six games did not exactly prepare us on how to handle the last couple of minutes in this one.

At any rate, great EFFORT. Keep that up the rest of the year.

  15. BJD95 03/01/2008 at 3:13 PM #

The play that turned the game was the bullshit offensive foul on Grant right before the 12 minute media timeout. We were up 13 at the time. Without that call, we probably hit 2 FTs to go up 15, and Grant is almost certainly available down the stretch. Grant can create a shot with shot clock winding down, and we could have kept the useless Courtney Fells on the bench.

  16. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 3:14 PM #

BTW, both Costner’s “intentional” and Javi’s elbow were well worth the penalty:)

  17. Sweet jumper 03/01/2008 at 3:16 PM #

We were in position with the ball to extend the lead from 8 to 10 points several times in the second half, but turnovers BEFORE getting a shot off and then giving up the threeball on the other end kept Duke close. MJ, BC, Horner and Fells committed most of those turnovers. Those turnovers turned a great effort into a heartbreaking loss.

    Just got back …

    1. The better team did not win today. That much should have been obvious by just watching the game. Am I saying State is better than Duke this season? NO. But they were today. Kerkooski even admitted as much today after the game.

    2. Once again, a team wearing blue gets outplayed while the other team is the aggressor yet the team in blue shoots double digit MORE free throws. Every time a player in blue hit the floor today I expected a “Charrrrage!” call and saw one almost each time.

    3. Yeah, give Dooook credit for hitting free throws and 3’s, but State DID NOT fall apart down the stretch. Duke played better D than they had the entire game and got some breaks from the refs. SHOCKING. Yes, we went 3 of 6 down the stretch from the line, but Dooook should not have been close enough to eeeeek one out.

    4. I was sitting on the opposite end of the court on the Brandon intentional foul, but it looked like a good clean hard foul to me. I have not read any responses yet so I’m not sure if that call was good or not. I do know that when it was called I said outloud “We just lost the game right there.” Sucks sooooo bad when you know you;re not gonna get a fair shake.

    5. Where has this State team been all season? Very, very proud of the effort today. No negatives from me today. We should be celebrating a victory, not hearing about Kerkooski getting his 800th carrer victory after a huge Dooook rally. BS BS BS

    6. Javi was magnificent today. Too bad he was in foul trouble THE ENTIRE GAME while Captain D*ckhead hand checks him all day, flops, and walks away with only THREE fouls called against him. … Ben played a great game after not starting and gave a great interview praising his younger teammates after the game. … Happy to see Tracy start; thought it was deserved and I thought he played well. … JJ still makes bad decisions at times when he receives the ball down low; once again, ball movement was much better when he wasn’t out there today …

Nice effort by Brandon, other than a couple of defensive lapses … It would’ve been nice to see what Courtney could do today as he was being aggressive for a change. Too bad we’ll never know as he had 4 fouls w/ 12 minutes left and picked up his 3rd fould in limited minutes in the first half … Trevor continues to play hard and impress … There may be hope for the future after all.

    7. F Duke

    8. F Doook again

    9. F the refs for helping the undeserving team pull out a victory and robbing a team of a well played, all out effort game … F you refs, and F you ACC office for allowing this type of s*it

Good job today Pack … Gooooo State

I read part of the way down the thread and then I stopped reading.

That was absolutely THE BEST basketball game I’ve seen all season out this team. The players that wanted it more than others got their chance to shine and show that they do have the ability play in this league. A bad call at the end, a late, but brief, loss of concentration on D, and a few missed FT’s after shooting lights out all day, and we lose BY ONE POINT to NUMBER SIX Duke.

Sure, a win would have been great, but today we witnessed the type of play that we’ve been waiting for all season long. This season is lost but I saw today at least gives me hope for the future.

Also, I know a few NC State players who are probably feeling alot better about themselves after the bus that some of you fans had thrown them under was finally lifted up off of their chests today.

  20. BJD95 03/01/2008 at 3:29 PM #

^ How did they lift the bus? They still freaking LOST. They have LOST seven games in a row. They are 4-11 in ACC play.

Today reminded us of how this team could be capable of playing, if they had played hard and cohesively all year.

  21. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 3:30 PM #

The Georgia Tech/Wake game is on and they’re talking about what a fierce competitor Hansbrough is. Dammit.

  22. wolfmans brother 03/01/2008 at 3:30 PM #

I am sick of this team, sick of this season, sick of losing and damn near sick of wolfpack athletics in general. God, we find new and inventive ways to crush my soul each and every week in both football and bball.
I tried so hard to be apathetic as I watched this game….because in every fiber of my body I knew that by game’s end Duke would hit big 3’s, get favorable calls, and outcoach us. Why, because that’s what Duke does well. We, on the other hand, fold when it counts. That is all. See you in 2009. I’m out.

  23. BAC79 03/01/2008 at 3:33 PM #

Redfred2: I agree with everything you said except the bus comment. The team threw themselves under the bus until today with no effort, no pride, and on several occasions just plain giving up and quitting. The fans did not do that, they did and for some reason they did not do it today.

That is what has been so frustrating this season is the lack of effort and lack of pride and the fact it took until the second to the last game of the season to see a complete 40 minute game with 40 minutes of effort and pride. Where was it the rest of the season.

I’m sorry you can’t blame that on the fans.

  24. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 3:33 PM #

    TREND OF THE GAME:

PG plays well, therefore the team plays well. Hickson comes out, the team still plays well. Now think about how we expected to lose Atsur, gain Hickson and surge from the cellar to third this year. I know there have been some questionable/bad coaching decisions along the way, but we should still go back and realistically double check those expectations.

    box score highlights:
    http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=280610152

    -javi 4/4 on 3s
-johnson leads turnovers w/ 4 in 7 minutes of play, javi has 1 with 32 mins of play
    -we out-rebounded duke by 8
-we out-shot duke by 16% from the field .. 38.6%/54%
-duke took 8 more FTs than we did
-ben, javi & tracy combined for 51 of our 86 points

my request: no more johnson PLEASE. we saw tonight that fergie can take the ball up the court just fine (against duke’s scrappy D, no less). let him do it for a few minutes while javi rests from now on.
