Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

bigger problem with the last play was passing it to ben with 2 sec’s left. should have been a guard with the ball.

I’m going to take off. Have a good afternoon folks. We played well today.

I hate Duke and all, but I long for the day we can finish a game late they did today.

At some point, Lowe has to decide to get interested in defense, coaching it, teaching, and demanding it from his players.

You just can’t give up uncontested 3 point shots over, and over, over, and over.

Sometimes you just have to hope luck is on your side. We really, really needed this win today and a little luck (and some unusually competent calling against the visiting team) would have helped today. Alas, it was not meant to be, too much on the line for the refs to call against the Devils.

If we hadn’t lost 7 in a fucking row, and showed up like this against BC, UVA & other shit teams, I wouldn’t be so angry and this wouldn’t be as painful.

    Wake may destroy us.

Tracy Smith is a ball of energy in the low post. He is the only player that I consistently enjoy watching play.

Smith at the 4 and McCauley at the 5 could work pretty well next year. Unfortunately, that’s only 40% of the starting lineup.

Brother Ismael….Please don’t carpet bomb my house with your flaming Poo bags. I beg of you.

I said above that I willing to give Sid some more time. But those two clowns on the bench with him (Strickland & Towe) have got to grease the skids and move on. There is a reason Strickland can keep a job at UNCW and Lowe was stuck down in Louisianan. No coaching talent!

Ooops I meant Strickland can’t keep a job at UNCW and Towe stuck down in Louisiana.

Duke comes to Raleigh to play NC State on their home floor and gets (from the officials) home-court advantage. When we played Duke in Cameron, didn’t Duke get the calls like the Demarcus Nelson hook , or the clothesline on Javi? Remember that game? Didn’t they get those calls? Remember the 6 straight body fouls that State committed to change the momentum of the game? Now, where in the hell were those officials when it was on OUR home court?

SFN: Am I on some kind of secret s list. I can only post one comment before I get a message that my response is not one in the data base and I must log out and log back in. What gives?

I can’t get into Costner’s head, but I think his intentional foul on Thomas was in response to the non-called foul on Javy. That was a big swing right there, even with Thomas bricking the foul shots.

And good thing Duke gets their pick of the big men. I can’t believe we missed out on Zoubek and Thomas. Stellar players. Wow. Do those stiffs realize how lucky they are to be at Duke?

  12. theTHRILL 03/01/2008 at 2:41 PM #

While we were hoping for luck to be on our side, Duke was executing and making plays. Winners make their own luck.

  13. westwolf 03/01/2008 at 2:41 PM #

^Exactly. Lowe needs to surround himself with coaches on the way up, not just holding on for a paycheck.

A few bright spots sure smith, ben ,javi ,fergie should be @ the point……………….every run duke made the common factor was jj on the floor………….a sick way to lose but at least an effort all the credit goes to the players on this one, sorry Sid should have run the match up zone in the final 2 mins

SFN: No questioning who’s a “real” fan here.

  16. BAC79 03/01/2008 at 2:44 PM #

79 State grad; so yes I am a State fan and have been since 1973.

    Why do you ask?

  17. CStanley 03/01/2008 at 2:44 PM #

The way I see it…and I’m gonna get off to and get some work done…

    1. Lowe is a decent coach, but he has to have players who are savvy, hungry, and tough. He cannot instill this or coach this like K, Roy, and other greats can (but then again not many can).

    2. We really need some superstar talent who has the characteristics noted in #1 above. Class of ’09 is so damn important for Sid to be successful here.

    3. Our uppers are just about worthless right now. Don’t know what the hell is wrong.

    4. Regular season is Carolina’s now. I predict they bitch slap Duke in Cameron. They also may take the tourny.

    5. Ain’t life grand right now as a State fan?

We gotta just tough it out (like we always do) and enjoy it when the success finally comes, in whatever big $$$ sport it may be.

Thank you SFN. As I have said before, I am not a basketball coach, nor did I play basketball in college, but I know lack of effort when I see it. I know lack of chemistry when I see it. I know lack of pride when I see it and I know when a team quits.

State did none of those things today. But we sure have done all of them prior to today. Why did it take so long for them to care?

  19. MrPlywood 03/01/2008 at 2:48 PM #

I’m with Noah. I’ll take effort, pride, guts. They came to play. I enjoyed the game immensely, even though they lost.

Random thoughts: Javi stood up to Paulus, big time. I felt comfortable with him bringing the ball up all game. He looked like an ACC guard today.

I think coaching kept State in that game. The game end was odd, could have been handled better. Why Fells had his hands on the ball those last few times down was baffling. Leave it Javi!

The officiating was good. I honestly have never seen Paulus get called for a push in the backcourt – he did today. Should have called for hand-checking all game, but we know how that goes. Overall, I think the refs set the tone early calling charges both ways. I’m good with that. The phantom bump on Ben didn’t help, but he we hit free throws… Johnson can’t hang.

  20. Wait_Til_This_Year 03/01/2008 at 2:49 PM #

    ^^

    “did Javy not get clotheslined”

Yes he absolutely did. Fouled by the Duke player on the arms, and Javi fell down. I believe if you look at the (not called) foul on Javi, and Costner’s retaliation, they will look remarkably similar.

At the same time, I know the foul was intentional, but it was not that hard of a foul. Costner got him on the arm. It was not a shove from behind, or a viscous hack, or, ahem, an elbow to the nose. I’ve seen contact like this not even called a foul, much less intentional.

-The refs called it intentional because they saw Javi get fouled (even though they didn’t call it) and they knew Costner’s foul was something of a revenge foul.

I don’t see how a player can be flipped sideways in midair and the refs don’t see a foul there.

Also, it’s possible McCauley should’ve called the timeout after crossing the time line. If we had at least a second left, we could’ve gotten a better look.

  21. newt 03/01/2008 at 2:49 PM #

Once again, I request for somebody to show me one example of K and/or Roy winning with less talent.

“Winning with less” is not a defining characteristic of a great coach.

    We started three freshmen today.

  22. Rochester 03/01/2008 at 2:49 PM #

If anyone out there who recorded the game could throw a shot of the clotheslining of Javy up on YouTube I’d like to see that again to try to understand how that could be missed by any ref not on the take. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Javy elbow Paulus in the face again. That was kind of sweet.

  23. TTandB74 03/01/2008 at 2:51 PM #

Loved Costner’s hard foul. We gave good effort today. Tough to play 5-on-8. This probably has been said before, but I’m too dispirited to read all the posts, but I’ll go back later.

  24. StateFans 03/01/2008 at 2:52 PM #

I don’t think that a lot of these decisions regarding the fouling and the need for a timeout are as cut and dry as they are being made out to be here. I am a little more in the noah and beowolf camp today.

  25. 1.21 Jigawatts 03/01/2008 at 2:54 PM #

This team simply doesn’t know how to win. You could see it in the last 5 minutes.

    – Are the refs horrible and secret K fans?? Yes.
    – Did Dook whittle away at the lead by dribbling into the lane, drawing an extra defender, and then kicking it out to a WIDE OPEN man on the outside to bury the 3, Over and Over Again?? Yes.
    – Did State rush shots during the final minutes and miss critical FT’s when the game was in doubt?? Yes

A Smart, Disciplined, Mentally Tough, Confident Team doesn’t let this game slip away like they did during the final minutes.

Now, with all that said…Did the Refs give the game to Duke at the end of the game by calling that HORRIBLE BS call on McCauley instead of Hooking on Nelson when the game was on the line? Absofreakinglutely.

I’m glad for the effort from State the entire game. I’m mad because it took them this long to play an entire 40 minutes in a single game. Last point, glad to see the guys who’ll be around next year playing great and smart. Wish we would have had this one. A win against Dook wouldn’t change anything about this season but it would have changed the perception of the program.
