With a great deal more funding and national recognition. Folks take the highs and the lows don’t just dwell on the bad seasons. Some years we will be bad. Some we will be good. If it was easy every team would be a dynasty. Give Lowe some time. He will figure things out and get the kids on the same page.

I absolutely do not understand why Horner continues to get minutes. I think we should ask for his scholarship back on the grounds that it was given under the false assumption that he was actually a basketball player. He has contributed nothing all year long. He doesn’t score, he can’t defend or rebound and he doesn’t hustle. He justs stands around in a daze. At least when Costner plays the other team has to pay attention to him because of the possibility that he might actually score. Horner doesn’t even bring that.

Tracy Smith provides more production across the board while averaging half the minutes.

“I imagine some people might would listen to you if you did more than come out after a loss and whine like a little girl.”

Thank you, that’s very helpful. All of our problems are solved now.

Also, the “Lowe knows he doesn’t have a point guard” stuff is complete crap.

You know you have 12 scholarships. So…limited slots. And you fill them up with a guy who was a third-string PG at that powerhouse, Iowa State, a third-string PG from Tennessee, a top-300 guard from Miami and a top-150 combo guard from Indiana??

Degand is athletic enough to at least play defense in the ACC, but he can’t shoot and he’s not a very good ballhandler. Johnson is an enormous defensive liability, brings nothing to the table offensively, and handles the rock about as well as Curtis Marshall did as a rookie. Gonzalez is an average athlete for the ACC, but he can’t shoot either and isn’t a very good passer and doesn’t seem to have much of a basketball IQ.

Lowe just took the first two years of his program and threw them right into the trash. It’s one thing if you sign a guy like Chris Wright and then he doesn’t work out. It’s another thing if you chase all the top point guards and wind up with someone like Gonzalez. But Lowe stuck us behind the eight-ball before he even got started! We’ve had a commitment from Mays, it seems, for three or four years ( <–hyperbole alert!!! ).

If this were a cops-and-robbers movie, Lowe would check his revolver and see that he had six bullets and no reloads. Then he’d go into the house and fire off five warning shots.

  5. packpigskinfan23 02/18/2008 at 10:19 AM #

ok Noah… we see your frustration with Lowe, but some of us are sticking with the guy.

Gonzalez has freshman lapses… but I really think he is going to be an ACC caliber PG one day. He may not be a Lawson, or Rice… but I think he isn’t that far from an Atsur. Now I know that Atsur wasn’t a true PG, but he got the job done. Javi will to. Dont get me wrong… I would LOVE to see Wall starting next year with Javi backing him up, but freshman make mistakes no matter how many stars they had, so we cant bank on anyone.

  6. Rick 02/18/2008 at 10:39 AM #

Noah has made his grand proclamation and nothing that happens will change his mind. Lunatic fringe indeed

  7. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 10:40 AM #

Wall can’t be here until ’09 if he comes here at all. next year will be a battle for PG: Degand, Javi, Mayes, Marques

  8. haze 02/18/2008 at 10:41 AM #

Noah, though I’m not as down on the staff as you seem to be, there is no question that we have fired a shotgun at the PG position. Still, I think that Degand and Javy have shown enough to be considered ACC worthy. After all, we’re talking about soph/frosh here. Neither looks like an all ACC candidate but I believe they are going to be solid after they get their feet under them. Also, just imagine where we’d have been without them this year. No, really, it can get worse.

If there was a clear mistake, it seems to be MJ. In fact, I’m pretty sure that MJ is the reason that Javy is even here. They got him in and found out that he wasn’t a real option. As for Mays, he may be a mistake too but I’ve got this crazy thing about actually seeing a guy play before I discount him. For now, I choose to be optimistic as he seems to have skills and a great attitude.

I guess the comeback is “should have gotten a stud instead”. Yeah, well, easier said than done for a coach with no proven system to recruit to. Wright was a HUGE miss for this staff (more important that JJ, IMO) but I can’t blame Chris for going to GT over the complete unknown we represented at the time of his de-commitment. It was the legacy of not hiring a proven college coach. Of course, having accumulated a mess of lightly regarded PG’s, the stud argument is now completely valid. With Degand, Javy and Mays in the fold, we shouldn’t offer anything short of a slam dunk PG for ’09/’10. Wall, please.

Lastly, I think it’s worth noting that just b/c the NC State fans are ready to win, it doesn’t mean that our program is ready. Though opinions may vary, it should be clear that Herb did not leave a juggernaut and that Sid is not an experienced college coach. Sid can call plays with the best of them (my opinion) but he’s got a lot to learn about the full college game (talent assessment, scholly management, academic support, motivation, intensity, off-season conditioning). What’s more, aside from Larry’s recruiting, there’s not much evidence saying that this staff is particularly exceptional. To make this work, we are going to have to accept some on-the-job training. It doesn’t matter if we LIKE it or not, it’s just the way it IS. Our athletic dept (read: Jed) is patient to a fault and will not be dropping bombs on anyone, anytime soon. Accept it and give Sid a reasonable time-frame to work the puzzle or just be sad and rail at the wind. The upside is that Sid has bench skills and it’s reasonable to believe that he can get it together quickly. That’s the hope here, anyway.

“Degand is athletic enough to at least play defense in the ACC, but he can’t shoot and he’s not a very good ballhandler.”

Degand was shooting 50% from 3 before his injury.

Don’t get too caught up in his low ranking. This kid will be a player. He & CJ will get some PT next season.

“Degand was shooting 50% from 3 before his injury.”

but that was like 6 shots in 10 games or something crazy like that.

sorry about the Wall mix up. I dont really get into recruiting and all that as much as some of you do. it gives me a headache.

  12. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 10:52 AM #

    ^ 8-16 from 3. 47% overall shooting.

  13. packpigskinfan23 02/18/2008 at 10:59 AM #

thats not much when you think about the amount of games he played.

“Don’t get too caught up in his low ranking. This kid will be a player. He & CJ will get some PT next season.”

So you have seen him play?

  15. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 11:03 AM #

no, it isn’t a lot, 8 3’s in 10 games, but it isn’t fair to say he can’t shoot. He’ll probably he our starter next season.

  16. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 11:05 AM #

“So you have seen him play?”

no, but talked to folks & read a lot over the last few months. If you’re considered for Mr. Basketball in Indiana, you can play. After top50 or so, rankings mean very little.

“no, but talked to folks & read a lot over the last few months. If you’re considered for Mr. Basketball in Indiana, you can play. After top50 or so, rankings mean very little.”

I have not seen hm play either but unlike you I will not profess to know something about him. You cite “talked to folks” (can you be more vague?) as your source. How are we to know these folks know anything about basketball?

So far he is ranked low by “folks” who have seen him play. While I certainly hope you are right about him, why would you say he will be better than his rating when the reality is you have no idea whether that is true or not? We are supposed to take the word of someone who admits he has never seen him play?

packgrad93, Why are you confusing a ‘rant’ with facts?

  19. Noah 02/18/2008 at 1:07 PM #

“Why are you confusing a ‘rant’ with facts?”

Moreover, why am I interrupting the sweet, sweet dreams of the deluded with reality?

We’re being piloted by a man whose idea of good, long-term planning is to place a six- or seven-year arc for the program in the college decision of a 15 year old.

But tell yourself whatever you need to…

“packgrad93, Why are you confusing a ‘rant’ with facts?”

packgrad and facts are complete strangers

  21. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 2:46 PM #

I was bringing the facts to the converstaion, please re-read.

“So far he is ranked low by “folks” who have seen him play”

well, folks within the NCSU bball program think he has skills to bring to the table & they have seen him play more than most. Those rankings are mostly from summer camps, those “experts” maight see a kid 2 or 3 times. I’ll be waiting for a “you were right” after Mayes & CJ steps on the court.

  23. Rick 02/18/2008 at 3:47 PM #

“I’ll be waiting for a “you were right” after Mayes & CJ steps on the court.”

    1) “you” will not be right. The “folks” that talked to you will be. so “you” will not be hearing a you ere right from me.
    2) It is obvious the NCSU coaching staff think alot of him and that is what gives me hope he is good.
    3) You made a definitive statement with nothing to back it up. “you” did not see him play. “your” opinion is irrelevant.

This is why I say facts and you are strangers becuase you state things as “fact” that are an opinion (and not even your own opinion at that).

  24. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 4:07 PM #

“Don’t get too caught up in his low ranking. This kid will be a player. He & CJ will get some PT next season.”

that is what I stated, my opinion. Didn’t declare it to be fact. I base my opinion of what I read & hear. You base yours on whatever you want. I brought facts to the “Degand can’t shoot” post.

  25. redfred2 02/18/2008 at 6:33 PM #

“But Lowe stuck us behind the eight-ball before he even got started!”

He seems to have a great memory for things in the past, and well after the fact, but it doesn’t seem to serve him very well when things are happening right in front of his face. Don’t worry though, when you ask him about all of this PG and others stuff in a few years, he’ll have had time to sort through and finally gotten his facts straight.

But for right now, why don’t we just go ahead and do this…
