“BTW folks we were not favored in this game.”

“I’m sorry but Clemson is a good team. I was actually shocked it was as close as it was. (I predicted a 15+ point loss)”

Really? We weren’t favored? We haven’t won a fucking game in which we weren’t favored this year. THAT is the problem. If you don’t see that as a major problem, then your standards are quite low.

  3. MattN 02/16/2008 at 5:59 PM #

Are you kidding me? NIT is extremely questionable right now. We had 18 wins last year and barely made it in.

  4. RAWFS 02/16/2008 at 6:00 PM #

The players found the value of never giving up, even if they didn’t win. BTW folks we were not favored in this game.

62 rpi lol that will not get us to nit loll
okay i can accept that we have three front line ncaa players fells grant and hickson, so we have a power forward center outside shooter and a guy who can drive the basket
other than unc duke mary and clemson who has more and you can argue maryland?
I don’t know but i can’t bear to watch the rest of the season.
especially when we were picked to be third!
I mean if herb can win at a state in second year ina good conference with a historically bad team, maybe we deserve this because of the way we treated herb and did not apprecaite him but sid did beat unc last year.

I WILL NOT GO SEE THIS TEAM PLAY A NIT GAME. I went last year because of their effort. Not this year, we have NCAAT players.

  7. ShootingGuard 02/16/2008 at 6:09 PM #

You can “analyze” it all you want, but when you are in a close game with a tough team in the final minutes and your point guard can’t bring the ball up against ONE guy…Nothing else matters…You are in trouble, and you are not going to win many games.

Everything else breaks down from that deficiency at the most important position on the floor!!

Oh, and unless Fells is on fire, we can’t shoot.

I am not a WTNY guy. I am a WT-we get a REAL point guard and some REAL shooters kind of guy.

It is “amazing” how much better our defense seems when we hit a few shots.

I like JG’s effort, but he gets torched by everyone else’s point guard off the dribble which then pulls our big guys out of position for rebounds which leads to easy putbacks for the other team’s big guys.

On offense, we have a slow, short, point guard who can’t bring the ball up against one man pressure, much less a press. Then, when he gets to halfcourt, he can’t break down the defense off the dribble, so we are forced to try to pound it in to the only NBA level talent on the team.

JJ can’t set himself up or play by himself. He just does sometimes because his ears are sensitive to that deafening clanging noise he hears when he kicks it back out to wide open shooters like JG and BC.

It has taken Oliver Purnell 5 years to get to where he is now. For Sid, it is all about the 2009 recruiting class. If he can get REAL players in that class, then there could be a future. Otherwise, all we have are knife fighters trying to win gun fights. Not good…

Please, please, please fire Lee Fowler just in case things don’t work out for Sid…

This team will tank in the NIT. Last year, it was a reward. This year, it is punishment.

I believe this team was actually picked 2nd by many media…

  9. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 6:11 PM #

lets see we started 11-3 out of conference(should have been 12-2 if new or missed that long lucky shot)
then 0-2 acc with horrid road losses
then 4-2 with wins over miami,(ot) v tech, wake,at flor states, tough second half mary after first good half mary and then debacle at duke(second half)
and not 0-3 which leaves us 4-7 15-10 with unc, duke fl state
    then wake virigna road
and at least one acct game which is old pay in game because state will not be one of the top four,
    16-16 5-11 acc regular
    then hickson leaves grant graduates
may williams come in degard comes back from injury then this is line up:
    mccally.costner degand fells may
horner smith for depth and another
    6-10 acc 17-14 regular season
    and an extention for lowe
but it could have been worse we could have hired k sampson
and espn was talking about who takes over and team could still go ncaa final four loll
ps could you beleve there are according to news and record 500 tickets left for duke wake game loll

Shooting Guard understands the big picture. LF has allowed our basketball culture and sports culture as a whole to dwindle into mediocrity or worse. Sidney is only in his second year and he will succeed or not on his own. I think he will have that great 09 class to get us going. In the meantime, who has a winning ACC record this academic year at State?

This team should be doing better. BC has major issues and I don’t recall a sophomore slump the likes of his. He gave us nothing today. Our guards are not good, but our lack of basketball IQ, as stated before is perhaps the most troubling. Very frustrating.

  11. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 6:24 PM #

five years of course five years at clemson i mean they have no history in b bal lin the acc its a football school and always will be foot ball, just like bc and v tech and flo state and miami and stae fights to beat these guys? heck we cannot even beat wake anymore.
if this team tanks it in then i think the ad needs to make a change i know that is drastic but this is the acc bigtime b ball and money and that is the driving force.
does anyone really think that wendell murphy let state use his jet to get calipari from memphis for this?
From herbs last year to now state program in b ball is lower than the permentioned ones;football schools,
If chuck can be fired and a tough coach brought in then we need one as well if this team tanks it, s lowe should be playing for his job in the finally weeks of the season.
last year was understood but this team was picked as high as second
do folks really think that if kentucky and billy g has another bad season as this year he isn’t gone?
i am shock that l hamilton at flo state is not gone.
everyone is right this and the players have gotten worse.
i would have played the scrubs instead of making it a iron man race.
i mean is there a real difference in finishing 8-18 and 20-16 nit?
the bringing new recruits to get to ncaa nit level,
last year we were 3-8 and 14-13 now we are 4-7 and 15-10 is there been improvement?
I have a real good feeling about coach o’brien with football that team had no business being 5-5 even in acc play before wake and maryland games and we could have beaten wake to get inot a bowl, the maryland game our guys quit.
but coach o’brien will get it done!
sid only next year will tell

wolfpackpassion, I appreciate everyone’s comments on here, but this is not a text message. Please give a little respect to the english language and use punctuation, grammar, and try to spell the names of our own players correctly.

  13. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 6:33 PM #

don’t get me wrong i love my pack i love our passion for our beloved teams:football basketball and we all have put in a ton of money into the program whether it is giving money directly going to games and buying state merchandise etc, but our teams overall should be alot better but they are not right now, football i beleive o’brien will get us there and he will do it with force, but sid i don’t know he has the history but he had to know that these kids he brought into the program gonzalas johnson fegerson degand smith etc were not acc calibar, and i hate to see him learn on the job. folks we gave him the job when he did not even have his degree and then he did tha via correspondce and with the ad needing someone in a fix. irather have us wait untilwe got the right guy instead of a guy who wanted the job, heck i want the job but im not quailifed. but we will see after next year because this one is done. I will run naked and bark at the moon if we beat unc and duke back to back and we will not.

“I mean if herb can win at a state in second year ina good conference with a historically bad team, maybe we deserve this because of the way we treated herb and did not apprecaite him but sid did beat unc last year.”

Ding!! Ding!! Ding!! For MOST STUPID post of the year!!

You do know that much of Herb’s success this year has been greatly aided by not having to play Duke and UNC 4 times and Arizona having its “Gaudet Year” (which includes being absolutely destroyed on their home floor by the WORST team in the ACC), right?

In the ACC, in year TWO and FIVE at NC State, Herb’s teams sucked. What Herb does at Arizona State has ZERO bearing on the ACC where he had his chance and was totally dominated by Wake and Maryland (there’s no reason to talk about what Herb did with Duke and UNC until he comes back to the ACC and has success versus Wake or Maryland).

The best thing Herb has going for him in year 2 at ASU is James Harden having a connection to the school and going there (versus Herb bringing Adam Harrington to NC State for year 2), and Herb doesn’t have 4 games versus Duke and UNC on his schedule. Gee, what a difference that makes.

When Coach K retires and Duke gives away the $$bank$$ to bring National Champion Herb back to the ACC to compete—THEN Herb will have his revenge versus all of the mean NC State fans who wanted a single ACC title or more than one Sweet 16 in 10 years. Only then…

Until then, Herb will remain a mediocre ACC coach who is and should continue to do well combatting the fierce beavers and ducks of the world rather than travelling up and down tobacco road anymore with his pride in his back pocket…

hey folks i will do my best when i see our state players give better effort! maybe year 2010?
    loll
soneone giving me gramatical lessons loll
    loll
    must be a unc guy

OK , with the exception of very few in this particular thread…I read nothing from basketball people. Ferg to not play? Are you out of you’re gourd? Who penetrated and made things happen in the first half? Ferguson. Who played the tightest D on the ball when Red was in? What saddens me is that Sid or Tu Tu Towe have pulled him way too soon over the last 2 games. Man you guys need to start focusing.

I’m really looking forward to hearing what Noah has to say about this loss…

SFN: Enough with the Sendek shit. Find an ASU blog.

Herb recruited all these players we have now minus the current Freshmen. That should say enough about how successful we would have been. No one on this team can shoot; how would that have worked in our previous offense? That’s the last I’ll ever say on the previous coach.

LF left us in a big hole when he let committed players out of there contract with NCSU. Sid pulled a miracle class considering his late start. Horner was the only recruited player that came in last year; Brackman left, Simmons left, and Astur graduated. I really think Sid has done a pretty damned good job of putting a team on the court. I wish it was better than it is, but it is what it is. I think Sid will get the guys we need, I just hope it is sooner or later. I think it to be a 50/50 shot that we have a competitive team within the next two season. If we do, that will prove that Sid was an exceptional choice (well, maybe not exactly a choice per say).

I love this school and I will keep on cheering and hoping, but I will also keep my expectations in check. We came into this season waving a lot of smoke and mirrors. Looks like the smoke has cleared and the mirrors have shattered.

Right on the money ShootingGuard. Herb had his flashes but consistently fizzled.
Forget his unx/duke record, how about the other ACC teams he annually choked to? Or the annual NCAA tourney emasculation we endured ONCE HE GOT THERE?
Yeah, Herb would’ve, could’ve, should’ve fixed all that including our current problems. How dumb can you get.

Greywolf is right – at least they didn’t quit today. Of course, I didn’t rob any liquor stores, either.

It says alot about the fragile makeup of this team that we couldn’t score at all after Clemson re-took the lead. That is very, very demoralizing. Of course, we expended alot of energy coming back, and the bench played maybe 5 minutes total in the second half.

This was not an embarrassing loss – just a crushing one. Embarrassment will have to wait until Wednesday.

Shooting Guard is spot on. Sid has to sign a blue chip class for 2009, as I noted in my “write off” post. That’s going to be hard to do with this season being so lousy and next year setting up to be a disaster.

  22. wolfonthehill 02/16/2008 at 7:47 PM #

The posts indicating that we should feel OK about this game because Clemson’s a good team thoroughly disgust me.

  23. RegularExpression 02/16/2008 at 7:56 PM #

On a basketball note, I thought we did a good job taking advantage of Clemson’s very poor transition defense in the 2nd half. It’s a good thing, because combined with their pretty good half court defense and our already discussed lack of outside shooting and penetrating ability, we had a really hard time scoring in our half court offense.

On an off court note, did anyone who went to the game notice where the ’83 National Title team was sitting? A couple rows behind the band in the end zone. Really? That’s the best we could do for those guys? On the day we are honoring possibly the most important and inspirational team in the history of NC State athletics we stick them in the end zone behind the band?? They should have been in the Chancellor’s box with free hookers and blow if you ask me. Unfortunately I chalk that up to typical poor decision making that is so typical of both the athletic and academic administrations.

  24. wufpup76 02/16/2008 at 8:33 PM #

i thought a real key early was when we were playing w/ a lot of energy and were up 11-5, hickson and gonzalez came out at the first tv timeout and we didn’t score until after the NEXT tv timeout … i love marques, but he didn’t see the court again after that

granted it wasn’t all johnson’s fault, but when hickson and gonzalez came out it was as if all the energy and intensity immediately went out the gym … we needed someone, anyone to create something … that falls on the point guard position when a team really struggles on offense

jj hickson was awesome today … nearly every rebound the team got today was hickson’s it seemed

great effort in the second half … got to give clemson credit, they hit some really tough shots late

up 64-62, really disappointing to let them score the last 9 points … but really solid effort to come back and take a lead late

not really sure we’ll make the nit … wins look tough to come by down the stretch, but we’ll see

    go pack

  25. wolfonthehill 02/16/2008 at 8:39 PM #

We have the best RPI of all the 10-loss teams.

So we have that going for us… which is nice…
