This is the most under achieving Wolfpack team I can remember in some time. It truly sucks to battle all the way back, only to hand it over on a silver platter at the end. Whatever.

How about the end of the first half, when Clemson was inbouding with 2 seconds left? Purnell throws Oglesby in there, and guess what, he gets a wide open look on the simplest inbounds play in the book. He missed, but it just goes to show this team doesn’t have it. Those mistakes will bury you against the best teams.

Clemson re-takes the lead with about 2 minutes left, State never scores again. What else needs to be said?

  3. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 5:22 PM #

really they don’t get it or when they let him shoot a three and ran away from him like he was not going to shoot/ did they expect him to dunk?
imagine if they did not have hickson?
how bad would this team be?
guess what he is gone after this year or flunks out!!
and unc is comming to town weds depeted so says the media!!!
24-2 9-2 acc number three overall and rpi 2 but their depleted?
lol heck weere depleted with an coach learning on the job, plays that cant think and second rate guards who can’t dribble.
    the lineup should have been one degand went dow as follows;
fells grant costner mcalley and hickson, first reserve horner and maybe gonzalas and tracey smith and thats it.
the rest are scrubs who cannot even dribble.
please turn down that nit bid!!!
ncaa games in raliegh and state will ahve to be on the raod nit
i bet this team folds it up and loses out to finish the season.
    might as well,
and this team was picked third?

  4. triadwolf 02/16/2008 at 5:22 PM #

    * No perimeter game except when for Fells when he is on;
    * Can’t make a run without making an unforced turnover or having a major defensive lapse to kill it;
    * Can’t sustain quality(sometimes any) defense – although today was better than most;
    * How many unforced turnovers has this team made this year?

Overall I liked the effort, but I have come to the conclusion that we just are not talented enough. That would be a much different statement if anyone except Fells could make a perimeter jumper and if we had more than 3 or 4 players capable of playing defense. I really think these guys played above their heads last year and set us up for a fall this year. We need at least one or two more dependable shooters to have any chance of getting back into the dance within the next couple of years. Anyway, I’m tired and burned out and I’ll restate my conclusion – their is not enough talent, period!

  5. Wulfpack 02/16/2008 at 5:25 PM #

    Costner – 0-3, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 point.

    Are you kidding me? Wow.

I hate that I called it, but I did! I don’t know why, but I’m still going to pull for them… I wish I had a dog to kick… I wasted 2 hours instead of with my family, Im a 94 grad lousy dad!

Does the talent Lowe and staff is bringing in next year exceed the talent that is leaving?

Are Mays and Williams > Grant?

Is Wood > Fells, McCauley, Hickson the year after?

  8. lsutton5144 02/16/2008 at 5:26 PM #

Should have started fouling with 3 or 4 minutes left – Clemson is the worst free throw shooting team in the league! Surely the coaching staff knew that.

  9. st8family 02/16/2008 at 5:26 PM #

Our basketball team plays exactly like our football team did under Amato. You saw how that worked out.

Hope it works out better for Sid, but I doubt it.

  10. triadwolf 02/16/2008 at 5:29 PM #

That is the most depressing thing. Our best players (and they are the best on our team by a wide margin) are gone after next year. Grant gone after this year, Fells next year and Hickson this or next year. That leaves about 10 points a game remaining.

  11. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 5:30 PM #

I disagree there is talent when this team beat unc last year at home and then made that run in the acc t last year taht is talent.
You cannot beat quality teams and win 20 games without talent:
grant, fells, horner, costner mccalley and hickson are talented.
hickson above talent, but after the william and mary game when it was written in the n/o that players were fussing about playing time then you knew it had to be squashed by the coach, but s lowe did not do that.
It is a shame to lose to clemson on 25 ncaa celebration, what why not do that weds against unc loll.
You knew the ads felt this was a win!
five games left three at home two road:
    duke unc florida state
    wake virgina road
we will be luck to win one
    florida state home
duke unc will pound us and wake will put out more effort(underated)
and virigna will not finish with one win their second win will be against us.
if we had any chance for ncaa the bc game was ours
and today but that is lost.
the weds unc lost will hurt more because they will drill us!
and then play a game here
heck why don’t we just put a ram on our floor
    they own it anyway!

  12. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 5:33 PM #

    hows the baseball team look?
maybe we could buy out s lowes deal and get him back to the nba and hire a good coach?
    hummmmmmm
how much would we pay for bobby knight would he like to play k and unc twice a year to stick them and then teach our guys how to play defense i bet this team would acheive then loll

NC State and Brandon Costner, the Most Disappointing college team and player of 2007. I hope this lights a spark in the entire NC State basketball staff to bust their assess and work hard on their stuff in the off season. It’s funny because you look at the team and you realize that all 5 returning players are no better this year than from last year. You MIGHT make a case for Fells, but his improvement is marginal to say the least. There’s no excuse for not making the NCAA next season because only Mays and CJ will have no college experience.

  14. ncsslim 02/16/2008 at 5:35 PM #

The first half was a disaster. However, down the stretch, our guys were playing the best the defense they’ve played all year and were rewarded by Clem pulling shot after buzzer beating shot out of their asses. Yeah, it sucked, and I’m not talking about the entire game, but we could have won this thing easily if just one of the probably 4-5 crazy ass shots at the buzzer did not go down.

However, we are now officially sunk. I guess it’s the glorious time called “football season” again. Whoopee.

  15. Wulfpack 02/16/2008 at 5:36 PM #

^If Hickson goes, you can kiss next year goodbye. I am sorry but that is just the case.

  16. ncsslim 02/16/2008 at 5:39 PM #

Guys, I understand the attacks on Brandon, but the ordained Big Ben couldn’t throw it in the ocean today, either. I mean literally could not drop the ball in the basket. If we could have gotten anything from either of the guys, it’d be a different ball game.

Clemson re-takes the lead with about 2 minutes left, State never scores again. What else needs to be said?

How about “Damned if they quit today.” The game was decided when the Pack played very tough defense and Rivers hit a desparation 3 that he shot with our people all in his face. The rest was free throw mop up for Clempson as we were forced to foul.

The players found the value of never giving up, even if they didn’t win. BTW folks we were not favored in this game.

My wife thinks the Canes started cooling the building down for the hockey game tonight before this game was over causing the Pack to cool off. 😉 She also thinks the refs out of embarrassment for the number of fouls called on the Tigs looked the other way at the end of the second half. Our momentum was thwarted by some pretty obvious fouls that resulted in Clempson possession. Hickson was clobbered on the dunk that was called a clean block. That’s the kinnd of call that is not hard to make.

What was I doing during the game? Thinking a good thought but I got overruled by a couple of bad vibes. LOL

  18. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 5:40 PM #

he is gone i be ya with all the in fighting!!
we need b knight heck even to choke one of our guys to play defense
costner is said to have a knee issue according to carlton tudor.
but even tudor said he would come around?
    4-7 acc 15-10 overall rpi 48-50?
would the nit even look at us loll

  19. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/16/2008 at 5:43 PM #

I’m tired of hearing the excuse of “if”. If they wouldn’t have hit crazy shots, If the refs didn’t suck out loud, If we would have hit that one 3.

How about, If we would make shots at the basket, or If we wouldn’t turn it over with no defensive pressure, of If we would box out and get a rebound and not let the other team play volleyball at the basket?? How about those “Ifs”.

This team is a broken record and they have been all season. Certain players are improving or trying their best but not very many. Frankly I don’t know if it’s the coaches or the players (I’m not being paid to figure that one out) but if it’s the players it’s not going to change for another 3 years and if it’s the coaches that probably won’t change until then either.

  20. wolfonthehill 02/16/2008 at 5:44 PM #

This season, and this program as a whole, are both going in a completely unacceptable direction.

    No analysis needed.

And there is little hope for next year or the year after.

  21. sickofhate 02/16/2008 at 5:44 PM #

    I agree with Greywolf.
We played hard in the second half.
The way you guys sound you expected
    a championship this year…
Ive been a fan for as long as i can remember
and i am one still through the good and bad
Like Jimmy V said “Never Give Up”
And statefans it seems you have.

  22. wolfonthehill 02/16/2008 at 5:45 PM #

    passion – RPI was 52 coming in… it’s showing at 62 now.

    Nice.

  23. triadwolf 02/16/2008 at 5:46 PM #

Wolfpackpassion – I agree that the illusion of physical talent is there. Horner seems to have the physical talent, but can’t make a shot. Ferguson certainly showed it in HS, but what has he shown here? McCauley has a great IQ, but is really not that physically gifted. Costner shot well last year, but even last year he played slow and could not play defense. No one except our top three players have shown that they can consistanly play well (let alone great) at this level.

Everyone can have good stretches of play when they look good, but over the long haul talent (or lack thereof) will show itself. We lack team speed, explosivness, ability to handle the ball and IQ. We have good overall size and that is about it as a team. Hickson, Fells and Grant are the only three guys that show they can compete as starters in the ACC.

If you really look at last years level of play, it really was not that much different except for a couple big wins and a nice run in the tournament. The signs were all there last year, but we all wanted to remember the good and ignore the bad – we have to as State fans or else we would have no hope.

  24. wolfpackpassion 02/16/2008 at 5:48 PM #

hey lets start bashing roy williams here is a guy who takes advantage of matt d firing to take his players to a ncaa championship, cusses on air after his kansas team loses, and then states he did not know taht gifts could be giving to graduating seniors from boosters while at kansas and k sampson is in trouble for cell phone usage talk about a freaking double standard?
plus while i was at state during the v scandal, which really there reall ywas not one except palsyers selling acc tickets and shoes and a book froma lousy team manager yet roy survives sampson survives etc.
heck even billy packer is liking carolina and said they are deleted let him do one of games he see a delepleted team loll

I’m sorry but Clemson is a good team. I was actually shocked it was as close as it was. (I predicted a 15+ point loss)
