Wake Enters NCAA Tournament Discussion; State Mired in Point Guard Mess of Our Making

We set the stage in this entry last week that unless someone started claiming some scalps that the ACC would only have four participants in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Wake Forest’s big win yesterday over the Duke Blue Devils is exactly the kind of statement and scalp that the Demon Deacons needed to propel themselves into the conversation. If the tournament started today the Demon Deacons would probably still be on the outside looking in…but the Deacs are a lot closer than they were before Sunday’s game.

As if NC State fans needed any further salt in our wounds, the play of Wake’s freshman point guard, Jeff Teague, continues to dazzle the league and underscore the importance of having a stud at the key position.

The play of Teague also underscores the price that NC State is paying for very poor talent evaluation at the position. The Wolfpack’s coaching staff obviously ‘out thought’ themselves over the last couple of years as they amassed three commitments for the position – Farnold Degand, Marques Johnson, Javier Gonzalez – while choosing to pass on names like Jai Lucas (Florida) and Chris Warren (Ole Miss).

Warren has been so spectacular that he has a whole list of articles in USA Today that are ‘tagged’ with his name. Last week Warren earned his third SEC Freshman of the Week honors

The Orlando, Fla., native poured in a career-high 26 points at Arkansas on Saturday, his fourth 20-point performance in league play. He single-handedly kept Ole Miss in the game, scoring 18 points in the second half, including 11 straight for the Rebels in the stretch run to cut a 12-point Razorback lead with just under three minutes remaining to a three-point edge with 51 seconds left in the game. The lightning-quick rookie drained six three-pointers (6-of-8), dished out five assists and made three steals in the game.

Warren ranks sixth in the SEC with 18.4 points per game in league play and ninth with a 16.4 average in all games. He also ranks third in assists and three-pointers in all games.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound guard already seventh in school history with 64 three-pointers made this season, while his 345 points scored are sixth-most by a freshman in the Rebel program’s history.

Additionally, Lucas’ consistency at Florida led the Jacksonville newspaper to feature him last week.

The 5-foot-11 Lucas is averaging 2.4 assists per game, but in SEC play, that number jumps to 2.8 per game, and his 16 turnovers in 10 league games are the fewest among UF’s starters.

That’s proof of Lucas’ good decision-making, according to Donovan.

“He really tries not to turn it over, and generally the biggest problem when you have young guards that are freshmen like that [is] there’s going to be a lot of turnovers,” Donovan said. “So far, they’ve done a pretty good job of taking care of the basketball and understanding that, ‘You know what? If I don’t make the right play or I miss the right play, I’m better off holding onto the ball than I am throwing to somebody and getting it turned over.”

As BJD stated in this significantly important piece last week – Coach Lowe’s job may very well rest on the recruiting class that signs with NC State this coming November with no recruit more important that Raleigh’s very own John Wall at the point guard position.

But, allow me to add a little more to that while noting the obvious – if State lands wall and Trevor Ferguson does not graduate out (forget his ‘playing status’), then the Wolfpack will literally have SIX of THIRTEEN scholarships tied up in players who can play point guard if needed – Wall, Degand, Johnson, Ferguson, Gonzalez and Julius Mays. That is absurd. So, in addition to what State needs to sign in November, the program also desperately needs to do some ‘restructuring’ of scholarships allocation and spacing.

    packgrad93 stole my thunder. Lowe’s failure to nab Warren parallels Sendek’s decision to take Cliff Crawford over Steve Blake. Blake wanted to come here. It was obvious from the moment Crawford stepped onto campus that he wasn’t an elite playmaker/ballhandler. Blake went onto a great career at Maryland. Crawford had a so-so career at State.

    It’s very frustrating to see a coaching staff with two of the best point guards in NCSU history latch our hopes at the position onto a pair of D-1 rejects and a career backup. Please name a single ACC team where Gonzales, Degand, or Johnson would start. Can’t? Neither can I. And that’s a problem.

    Outside of Atsur (who was more of a natural 2 guard), we haven’t had a legit ACC caliber point guard since Corchiani. We haven’t been a power in the ACC since then. I don’t think that’s a coincident.

    i have a healthy dislike for wake, but dino gaudio comes off as imminently likeable … he really seems like a very classy guy

    and wake is 10-million times stronger on the defensive end under gaudio

    i will say this about wake, however, after watching them play several times this season – they take an absolute TON of bad shots … i thought they were very fortunate to hang on last night, being up by 5-7 points late and not running any offensive sets to get some clock down … you admire the attack mentality, but their offensive decision making could certainly stand some improvement

    i agree with the author, i still think they’re on the outside looking in at this moment, but they’ve probably got at least one more win to count on down the stretch (home vs. nc state) … 2 or 3 more victories plus a win against the pack could do it

    … as for state, what more can be said? it doesn’t look too good for a few years barring some great recruiting classes

    go pack

    If we can beat UNC at home, then we have a good chance of evening our record up at 7-7. Hopefully the coaches and players are directing all of their energy towards beating UNC.

    “so you’re saying Wake’s current coach is better than Skip?”

    How was that not clear? It is what got your panties in a wad in the first place.

    ^ just thought it wasn’t necessary. kind of like the putz comment.

    FYI, from what I can remember, here are our PGs since Corchiani:

    * Donnie Seale
    * Curtis Marshall
    * Justin Gainey
    * Clifford Crawford
    * Engin Atsur

    off the subject but:

    Ravenscroft’s 59-51 win over Cary Academy gave (Ryan)Kelly’s team the TISAC Conference championship. Kelly pumped in 27 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. He was named conference player of the year.

    our scholarship allocation right before and since Coach took over is a huge topic to get into…we are really set up to suck out loud for a few years…

    we will be trying to swim through the rocky waters of the ACC with at the very least 3 heavy weights strapped to our ankles…and that is a very tough thing to do, ACC scholarships should be cherished…

  12. packgrad93 02/18/2008 at 11:31 AM #

    ^ need a C in ’09 for sure. Ben & JJ will be gone.

    “just thought it wasn’t necessary. kind of like the putz comment.”

    What was unnecesary? You are as obtuse as you are ignorant.

  14. PackWolf82 02/18/2008 at 11:37 AM #

    the hardest part for me is not developing talent or at least fostering improvements year to year in players…with so many top names now being one and done players what kind of long term impacts do they have for us. Remember Anthony Grundy was not very highly recruited and he left his mark here over a full career. I also appreciate Julius’s 4 years and the things he did. We can’t let talent like Fells or BC f/m last year just level off or regress.

  15. packbackr04 02/18/2008 at 11:39 AM #

    i hate to say this, but Sid really needs to shake some things up. i wouldnt mind it at all if he ran a few players off. He needs to give the old Jimmy V “rat speech”… if you dont give a shit, if you dont want to be a rat, then get the hell out of here, we dont want you. its clear that not all payers are buying into what he is selling. and if we lose one of our better players, so be it.i would rather see hustle and a few more losses than to see people not trying (ala Brandon Costner). also i think this would free up some scholly space.

  16. wolfpackpassion 02/18/2008 at 11:41 AM #

    yeah i think our scholarships are maxed out

  17. RickJ 02/18/2008 at 11:43 AM #

    This reminds me of some of our football roster discussions in recent years. We have very good talent at some positions but the deficiencies in other slots renders us very average.

    Javi & Chris Warren played in a post season all star game last spring in Florida. Javi was named MVP and I remember thinking maybe we got the best player. I have seen Warren play a couple of games this year and he is a scoring sensation – a Tyrese Rice shoot first type of PG. I can see why Lowe preferred Javi over Warren – he is a little bigger and he plays PG more like Lowe. Looking back it was no doubt a big mistake.

    We will just have to wonder what DeGand would be doing now. I don’t think he would be an elite PG but he was clearly the best one on the roster. We really miss his quickness on defense. I also think we have really missed Johnny Thomas after seeing us play this year. Thomas is the best athlete on the roster (including Fells) and an elite defender. It is his overall offensive skills that need honing. We could be a much quicker team and better defending team with DeGand & Thomas but such is life as a State fan – we will get to read and hear how hurt UNC is coming into our game and that Bobby Frazier will miss the game.

  18. choppack1 02/18/2008 at 11:49 AM #

    RickJ – Those are valid points.

    I think we miss Degand a lot too. However, we were not exactly kicking butt w/ him in there. We lost to UNO and ECU w/ him at the helm.

    I really think the bigger point is what’s the deal w/ MJ. I thought he was going to be able to play the 1,2 and maybe even 3 spot? (Here’s another guy – try him at the 3 spot, why not??)

  19. gcpack 02/18/2008 at 11:50 AM #

    You know Rick most of your comments are worth reading but I don’t understand the continued berating & name calling of packgrad03. If you disagree then fine but drop the insults
    because it doesn’t add anything to the discussion.

  20. wolfpackpassion 02/18/2008 at 11:52 AM #

    I forgot about j thomas
    but was he not going to play or was to play less minutes than t smith?

  21. packbackr04 02/18/2008 at 11:54 AM #

    i really find it odd that sid has trouble motivating players, i mean, all he has to do is read a chapter of one of Jimmy V’s books per night. the man was a walking motivational speaker.

  22. packbackr04 02/18/2008 at 11:55 AM #

    why isnt tracy smith playing? he has more upside than Ben McCauley?

  23. wolfpackpassion 02/18/2008 at 11:58 AM #

    i think right now that smith should be playing more and big ben less

  24. Rick 02/18/2008 at 12:01 PM #

    “You know Rick most of your comments are worth reading but I don’t understand the continued berating & name calling of packgrad03.”

    Read his posts for about a month and you will have the same opinion of him I do. He is a Herb baiter who simply wants to argue. He brings nothing to a discussion because he posts nothing but the opposite view with nothing to back it up. I tire of it and will probably ban him soon anyway.

    Good post and unfortunately clearly shows what the lack of a quality PG can mean.

    A couple of weeks ago I made an entry relating to the number of scholarships at the PG position. One of my observations was that one or two of those current scholorships at PG will have to free up for us to get who we want – we just cannot afford to have more than 4 spots taken up at that position. I took a little heat from some of the community for suggesting that one or two of the current guys might be squeezed out to make room. I’m glad someone else has seen this issue for what it is – the numbers just don’t add up.

    It’s not a matter of loyalty, liking guys, or potential – we don’t have the luxuary of keeping guys that don’t help us if we can bring in someone who can. I just hope we can bring in someone (Wall?) good enough that we have to make a tough decision with the current roster.
