Tough loss, on dealing with one — Valvano philosophy

If you’re a passionate fan as I am, who believes as Vince Lombardi does that “Show me a ‘good loser’ and I’ll show you a loser,” it’s good to keep this Valvano advice in mind:

Jimmy V says he’ll allow his players 24 hours to feel sorry for themselves and curse the basketball gods. Then, he says, he’ll tell them to pick up their butts and get back in the mainstream.

I have an idea: maybe they could play basketball ANYTIME and EVERYTIME they are on the court. Cuz most of the time they are pansying around out there and Costner needs to grow up and grab rebounds and make great passes if his shot is off. This is about a TEAM and not a bunch of individuals, which is apparently what we have right now. Maybe we’ll have a team someday…and I REALLY find it hard to believe that we can’t get a good PG! Sidney was a PG, shouldn’t he be able to recruit one!?!?!

Oh, btw: Don’t be too hard on Billy P. He actually was making the point several times in the second half that Duke was getting away with a lot of things, beginning with Paulus’ kick save (and a beaut!) of the pass. I was proud to hear him say that Duke was getting away with all kinds of things for about 3 minutes there, and that’s the point in the game where it got away from the Pack. So I take solace to some degree that if the refs had been calling things right we might have stayed in the game longer (i.e. Paulus being ‘fouled’ by Costner and ‘knocked’ to the ground, what an acting job! That guy seems like he’s a jerk if he can feel good about faking things like that! Arrghh!).

Oh dear God about Sloan…He left because one evening in the late 70’s (protecting MYSELF by not calling the exact date and time of which I know) I will tell you how and why he went to Florida. And maybe not. Raleigh cops from that age and…I might be goaded.

Hopefully I can post some good Sloan quotes soon…I just ordered “An Illustrated History of the ACC” off of Amazon.com used — for around $6 used. There are a number of copies available and it’s a great book if you want to look through the conference’s glory days that NC State was most definitely a part of. Also bought a copy of Tim Peeler’s “When March Went Mad” — the story of the ’83 team. Haven’t had a chance to read it yet and it will be a lot of fun to see how memory compares with Tim’s fantastic writing.

No one bit on the story I could tell and I am happy for that. Thanks, but I felt that a post or 2 felt abanded by Norms instant departure when there where good reasons why he left. sorry for flapping my fingers to those who may know.

Please don’t interpret my remarks as a knock against Sloan. I have personally thanked him for all the memories he’s given Wolfpack Nation, and I have nothing but respect for him.

I’ll bite, CowDog. Always up for a good story. Especially when it’s 3:18 AM and I’m stuck doing IT work. I can wait until later today to hear it, though. 🙂

The V quote sounds a lot like the one from Kay Yow last year when she said they didn’t allow the team to wallow in self pity. They could step in it and swish their feet off a little bit, but not wallow.

To make matters worse (or better, depending on how you look at it) I stumbled onto this little statistical gem in the media guide: State has not won consecutive road games in the ACC since ….. 1987. 87! Look it up. So we shouldn’t have expected to beat dook in Cameron.

Past performance is the best indicator of future performance — I learned that at a leadership seminar.

    Adventeroo and John of Sparta,
I tried the pistol range last Saturday along witht CWP training. It still didn’t make me feel any better. I did want to put little Carolina Blue stickers on the holes on the target, but didn’t have an opportunity to do so because of time limits on the range.
