NC State 73, Virginia Tech 63 – Wolfpack Takes Key Step Back into Top 40

Sidney Lowe continued his mastery of “Basketball Grobe” tonight as the NC State Wolfpack won for the third time in the last four games. The Wolfpack is now 15-7 with an ACC record that now stands at .500 at 4-4.

NC State never trailed in route to our second consecutive win over a team ahead of us in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The Wolfpack hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the ten point win JJ Hickson delivering as needed, finishing 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. The Associated Press has their story about tonight’s game posted. ACCNow has these comments.

The win propels NC State back into a solid RPI of #40 while playing against the 31st toughest schedule in America. NC State has now defeated NINE teams currently rated in the RPI’s Top 100 as we wait and hope for Rider (currently #106) to battle back under the century ranking on their way to (hopefully winning a) conference championship.

Historically, a Top 40 RPI is particularly important for major-conference teams. In fact, over the last seven years only ten teams with RPIs of 40 or better have failed to make the NCAA Tournament — 280 teams have finished in the Top 40; 270 teams of those teams have made the NCAA Tournament.

Of those 10 misses, only three teams were from top power conferences and NONE were from the Atlantic Coast Conference (which is currently rated as the toughest conference in the country). Those teams that failed to make the Tournament were the following:

* In 2001 – #40 Mississippi State was 16-12 and 5-5 in their last 10 games

* In 2004 – #38 LSU was 18-10 and only 4-6 in their last 10 games

* In 2006 – #40 Cincinnati was 18-12 and 5-5 in their last 10 games (and were in national turmoil with the Huggins stuff)

Six teams that missed the dance with RPIs of 40 or better were: Hofstra, Missouri State (twice), Bradley and Air Force and Creighton. Hardly big names that would correlate to an ACC program.

EVERY team from a major conference who has achieved an RPI of better than #38 has been extended an NCAA Tournament bid. It may not be causation, but there certainly is some high correlation that makes it work watching.

State now owns 6th place in the conference standings and finally has an extra day off before traveling to Maryland for a huge game on Saturday night. The Terps have been playing excellent basketball on their way to an 8-2 record in their last ten games since December 28th. IMHO, a quick look at the rest of Maryland’s schedule can easily lead one ot believe that the Terps are on their way to securing an NCAA Tournament berth despite their exceptionally poor early-season performance. In light of the Wolfpack’s exceptionally tough remaining schedule, State could really benefit from picking up a win in at least one of our next two games that are both on the road – Saturday at Maryland and Thursday at Boston College.

Coach Lowe is now an impressive 4-0 against Seth Greenberg. Does one really wonder why Greenberg was such a vocal supporter of former NC State Head Coach, Herb Sendek, and took the liberty to make negative comments about NC State fans after Sendek left Raleigh in April of 2006?

Get rid of the lazy-ass passes up top, and there’s very little to complain about in this one.

    Nice job, Pack…

I FELT THE ANNOUNCERS WERE HORRID. its like they only came with one set of things to say and they were all about what a great coach seth greenburg is and how they love that scrappy VT team that just wouldnt give up. total bullshity duecsheness! they couldnt find anything to say about the improvement of our team since the beginning of ACC play, or how Sid and Co seem to be getting the most out of a very young team. And what a gritty performance it was for said young (and tired) team to hold on to a lead in its 3rd game in 6 days.

even my wife commented about how the announcers were continously talking about VT. At one point she looked at me and said “arent they losing? why do they keep talking about how good THEY are? and not NC State”…. i just replied. “i dont know honey, i dont know”

she also commented on the officiating. and we both were in agreeance. it wasnt bad one way, it was just poor officiating. ACC ref’s are just incompetant at their jobs, plain and simple.

To quote PP’s “PackFloyd” I am “lollering all the way to lollerville” — Carolina has lost a couple of key recruits to Clemson and Tennessee.

I guess they’d better hope John Blake is right about being a “player or two away from a national championship” because that may be all the really good ones that they pull down.

WTNY- “Javi is getting some well deserved kudos here but he has got to work on taking the ball to the basket!”

absolutely. both of our current playing point guards really need work in this area (going to the hoop) … marques seemingly won’t do it at all and javi’s decision making about when to drive and what to do once you do could stand some improvement

in the second half of the wake forest game, only mccauley would try to go towards the hoop … the result was that he got to the line and hit some crucial free throws for us in that game

in the vt game last night, once our offense started to become stagnant again with the “pass it around the perimeter for 25 seconds then try to force it to jj” offense, i was going crazy for someone to drive/cut to the basket … when you don’t put pressure on defenses you make it easy for them – how many steals did vt wind up with last night?

you don’t want to do it blindly all the time, but when the opponent’s defense toughens up that is precisely when you need to attack and create … we need to do a better job of loosening up defenses then we’ll start to see a lot more offensive efficiency at times

a key for last night was that we took it to them defensively in the first half and played with energy on the offensive end … the result of both was a low score for them and a lot of good shots with a high shooting percentage for us … they go hand-in-hand and is almost always a recipe for success

    go pack! attack! attack! attack!

I dont get ESPNUnavailable so I could not hear Ballen. Considering he is a UNC homer almost as bad as Stuart Scott, I am glad I was able to listen to Gary “check-it” Hahn. Ballen was awful at TVD, and I am sure just as bad now.

As for Costner, have seen many questions about his injury. Officially listed as “bruised ribs” from Monday’s practice……..I wonder how they got bruised. Was it Sid looking for a heart? Maybe JJ whipping his tail to get him motivtaed?

  7. foz 02/06/2008 at 10:28 AM #

OK – apparently the bar was louder than I thought.

  8. burnbarn 02/06/2008 at 10:34 AM #

Maybe Javi and Vasquez can smack talk in espainol!!!!

The team is still not strong mentally. As soon as we have success we let down a bit. I am very satisfied on how the first half was executed and in the second, we just hung on.

Would love to get a win at Md and/or BC… Next week is big!!!!

Wulfpup – I think the reason you weren’t seeing a lot of driving was partly because of VaTech’s ability to draw charges on our guys. When Javi was driving at the end of the game, our main goal was clearly to use clock.

He made a couple of bad decisions on these drives – but I think this will improve w/ experience.

Great win. Gonzalez is playing well.

State by 12, why? Javi is getting better and better.

    HA! Not bad.

I’m on pins and needles about this season and how it will unfold. How our players can stay realitively calm and go about day to day acitivies is amazing. Nothing’s guaranteed, since we have a tough schedule going forward. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

  13. Rick 02/06/2008 at 11:41 AM #

“Since it has been discussed here before, from what I could hear in the bar, the announcers (Dwayne Ballen, Adrian Branch) were pretty good. I remember Ballen from WTVD (I think) years ago.”

    They were abysmal.
In one sentence they called Javi a freshman, soph and junior. Branch seemed to be trying to make analogies and statements that went no where.

I hat eto say this but bring back Jason Capel. Aside from his nasally voice he made good observations.

  14. Texpack 02/06/2008 at 11:52 AM #

The problematic passes at the beginning of the second half were mostly made from the top of the key area. We tried to go straight over the top to JJ when they were fronting him. From this angle, it’s a much tougher catch and shoot even if the pass in successful. It is also a lot easier for the help inside to pick up on the pass when JJ is coming down the lane straight at the hoop. If the help has to come from the weak side, like it does when the entry pass comes from the 45 degree angle, it takes longer to get there and the initial reaction time to the entry pass is a little slower to boot.

something positive from a member of the MSM (mainstream media) …

gary parrish of cbssports.com was at the game last night and had this to say: http://www.sportsline.com/columns/weblogs/entry/parrish_thoughts

we may need all of the positive comments we can get, as lunardi’s latest bracketology on espn.com had only 3 ACC teams in the field and the conference’s (and state’s) reputation seems to be bad across the media for various reasons … i personally don’t agree w/ lunardi or the rest of the media about the acc and to a large extent nc state, but whatever …

anyhoo … happy wednesday and gooo pack!

Foz, Danny Ferry’s Dad, Bob, played for the Baltimore/Washington Bullet’s and I think, was GM or something like that after he retired. That would have explained why Danny played at Dematha. Morgan Wooten really put out some players from Dematha and Sloan had a “pipeline” coming out of there.

  17. WTNY 02/06/2008 at 12:38 PM #

Mr O — perhaps I should have continued. Javi needs to work on his shot on the drive. Other teams know that Javi will not shoot the short jumper/floater. Add this to his game and the defense is forced to cover him and thus creates open Pack players to receive his passes.

  18. Texpack 02/06/2008 at 12:41 PM #

The Sloan pipeline started with Kenny Carr and continued with Hawkeye Whitney, Sidney and Derek. V got Benny Bolton as well.

  19. choppack1 02/06/2008 at 12:43 PM #

“SFN according to the dance card, Clemson had an RPI of 40 and FSU had an RPI of 39 last year and both missed.”

Pomeroy’s College RPI’s were a little lower for both teams.

One thing to remember about those teams – both had losing conference records. One of the known factors the committee looks at is conference record. It should be noted that the 3 ACC teams w/ losing conference record that I can recall – UVa, FSU and NC State – all won their first round games. I know NC State went to the Sweet 16 and I think UVa did too.

^^In one sentence they called Javi a freshman, soph and junior.

    I remember that also.

^^^The Sloan pipeline started with Kenny Carr and continued with Hawkeye Whitney, Sidney and Derek. V got Benny Bolton as well.

Don’t forget Quentin Jackson. Also, as Branch mentioned last night, our Assistant Coach that gets forgotten sometimes, Pete Strickland, played for Wooten at DeMatha around the Kenny Carr/Hawkeye Whitney timeframe. I think he was a Senior when Sid was a Sophomore or Freshman. I always think it’s funny when everyone mentions the PG’s on our staff, and they mention Justin Gainey and Quentin, but forget the Coach who has 18+ years college coaching experience and left Pitt as their all-time assists leader.

  21. Sweet jumper 02/06/2008 at 1:51 PM #

Kenny Carr is second only to David Thompson in all-time great players at State. He could really play and he had a nice pro career.

Gonzi’s heart is the big story right now. His response to that air ball 3 has been just what you hope for from a young player. He decided he’d had enough and became more determined and motivated to succeed instead of losing confidence. He is giving more on the court right now than any other player – going after loose balls, etc. He looks like he hates to lose.

BC is just plain injured this year, going back to the Summer. I think it’s a big mistake to write him off, especially in the big picture. I bet by this time next year he’s getting lots of love as one of our best players. Once he gets healthy, he’ll be the old BC again.

  23. Trip 02/06/2008 at 2:36 PM #

Someone mentioned about Pomeroy’s ratings and how he’s pessimistic. Well, his system does account for improvement over the year, but not RAPID improvement. While we may be playing excellent now, we had way too many shitty games at the beginning of the year to throw stats in our favor overall.

However, he does have one stat that shows rapid improvement depending on how you look at it.

    Luck: +0.127 National Rank=3

Luck is calculated from winning games that his system says we shouldn’t have. We’re #3 in the nation for that.

  24. Trip 02/06/2008 at 2:37 PM #

Oh, and Javi is playing his heart out. I love that kid. I liked him earlier this year, thinking he was scrappy, started to question his ability a month ago, but now… I love him.

I couldn’t agree more. It looks like Javi drives to the lane and his only hope is that he draws one of the bigs over and can pass to the open guy. He doesn’t seem to know to put up that 10-12 foot floater. Once he can do this, I think he might just be a force to reckon with.
