NC State 73, Virginia Tech 63 – Wolfpack Takes Key Step Back into Top 40

Sidney Lowe continued his mastery of “Basketball Grobe” tonight as the NC State Wolfpack won for the third time in the last four games. The Wolfpack is now 15-7 with an ACC record that now stands at .500 at 4-4.

NC State never trailed in route to our second consecutive win over a team ahead of us in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The Wolfpack hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the ten point win JJ Hickson delivering as needed, finishing 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. The Associated Press has their story about tonight’s game posted. ACCNow has these comments.

The win propels NC State back into a solid RPI of #40 while playing against the 31st toughest schedule in America. NC State has now defeated NINE teams currently rated in the RPI’s Top 100 as we wait and hope for Rider (currently #106) to battle back under the century ranking on their way to (hopefully winning a) conference championship.

Historically, a Top 40 RPI is particularly important for major-conference teams. In fact, over the last seven years only ten teams with RPIs of 40 or better have failed to make the NCAA Tournament — 280 teams have finished in the Top 40; 270 teams of those teams have made the NCAA Tournament.

Of those 10 misses, only three teams were from top power conferences and NONE were from the Atlantic Coast Conference (which is currently rated as the toughest conference in the country). Those teams that failed to make the Tournament were the following:

* In 2001 – #40 Mississippi State was 16-12 and 5-5 in their last 10 games

* In 2004 – #38 LSU was 18-10 and only 4-6 in their last 10 games

* In 2006 – #40 Cincinnati was 18-12 and 5-5 in their last 10 games (and were in national turmoil with the Huggins stuff)

Six teams that missed the dance with RPIs of 40 or better were: Hofstra, Missouri State (twice), Bradley and Air Force and Creighton. Hardly big names that would correlate to an ACC program.

EVERY team from a major conference who has achieved an RPI of better than #38 has been extended an NCAA Tournament bid. It may not be causation, but there certainly is some high correlation that makes it work watching.

State now owns 6th place in the conference standings and finally has an extra day off before traveling to Maryland for a huge game on Saturday night. The Terps have been playing excellent basketball on their way to an 8-2 record in their last ten games since December 28th. IMHO, a quick look at the rest of Maryland’s schedule can easily lead one ot believe that the Terps are on their way to securing an NCAA Tournament berth despite their exceptionally poor early-season performance. In light of the Wolfpack’s exceptionally tough remaining schedule, State could really benefit from picking up a win in at least one of our next two games that are both on the road – Saturday at Maryland and Thursday at Boston College.

Coach Lowe is now an impressive 4-0 against Seth Greenberg. Does one really wonder why Greenberg was such a vocal supporter of former NC State Head Coach, Herb Sendek, and took the liberty to make negative comments about NC State fans after Sendek left Raleigh in April of 2006?

That scenario could play out Tau.

Assuming we continue to get the solid contribution from Javi, we can go 5-3 down the stretch. I think a lot of the reason Sid is resting him more than makes sense is the rookie wall concept. Pace him and be sure he is not completely exhausted when we will need him most.

Clemson is dealing with backcourt injuries and their not playing on the same level as they were early. Maryland is
as up and down as we have been, but I think they will rise to hold their home court. BC and UVa are not built to abuse our deficiencies or withstand our strengths. They aren’t particularly daunting places to play either. FSU at home we should win as well. Duke and UNC will likely beat us. An upset against either will give us a game to lose, though I would prefer we not use it.

We should finish fourt, could finish as high as third, and will likely finish fifth just to ruin any chance of a tournament championship run.

Tonight was all about heart. The team showed some and it paid off big. As mentioned aboved, I also am proud of the way they have come back to play like they really want to win. I’m looking forward again to seeing them play in the RBC. For a while, I wasn’t sure I would make the trip. Good job Pack and thanks for not giving up on the season.

it’s nice to see that we can actually get a lead and sort of keep it for a while. baby steps… i think we lost steam when we started playing the “let’s stand and pass the ball around the perimeter and then get it to JJ” offense – we had 3 turnovers in a row. if JJ is the only player near the paint, it’s no wonder they are stealing the ball – often it was 3 VT players vs. JJ – and if we finally shot, there was no one in the paint to get the rebound. We’ve got to have another strategy to attack a zone.

it’s so refreshing to watch a team play that shows consistent improvement – much more gratifying than the Herb days!

what was wrong with Costner? What type of injury does he have?

  5. Wulfpack 02/06/2008 at 7:23 AM #

This team is really starting to gel. No question we are better off without Costner IF he continues to sulk. I love the way Hickson just dominates in the paint and Ben complilemts him well. Fells has really established himself this year. He just needs to keep the focus and I would argue attack the rim a little more often. But man is he deadly from long range.

Javi is coming along slowly. I am just glad we now have some time to prepare for a huge game that would really catipult us.

Pomeroy’s outlook for us is definitely glass half empty:

  7. Astral Rain 02/06/2008 at 8:14 AM #

Pomeroy’s been predicting losses like mad ever since the Mich.St game

It doesn’t take improvement into account.

That said, honestly, I expect 7-9 realistically, and a top seed in the NIT.

“Some have commented on his lift, and he’s obviously slower–both can be contributed to the added weight that was admittedly an effect of the summer injury. I say good thing he’s only a sophomore.”

But did his injury force food down his throat?

Good game. Soem rough spots but this team is starting to come together. We can play good D and when we rebound we are a tough team to beat. Fells is shooting great bu as has been said his passes downright scare me. Javi keeps getting better and his jumpshot loosk great. Next year a 1-2 of he and Degand will be a pretty decent PG combo. Johnnson better get his rear warmed up as he will not see the court in the near future.

    Happy signing day everyone!!!

Many good comments above, I’ll only rehash a few 🙂

It was very striking how strong our starting line-up was in the 1st half. Any substitution brought us down a full notch. To me, that’s our first indication all year of real chemistry. We should see that 5 for the rest of the year.

Javier! Wow, did anybody else get a rebound in the 1st half? That kid has a bizarre proficiency on the boards.

Is it me or do both Courney and JJ have weak hands? Seems a 3yr old could rip the ball from either of them. Thank goodness both are so efficient when they do actually manage to keep the rock.

I don’t want to overread this game beyond saying that our rebounding was exceptional. This was otherwise a very nice match-up for us. VT doesn’t have much in the back-court and, aside from Allen (undersized), they don’t have interior scorers. Plus, their one real offensive threat (Vasallo) is exactly the kind of guy that Gavin Grant was built to play. Add in the home crowd and this was clearly our best ACC setup of the year. Glad we put it in the bank.

  11. choppack1 02/06/2008 at 8:45 AM #

Haze – there’s nothing bizarre about Javi’s rebounding ability. He simply wants the ball and works to get to it – a striking contrast to 3 others on the court.

  12. Greywolf 02/06/2008 at 8:54 AM #

“I’m still confused why Johnson gets so much PT. Javi seems to be in good shape…he should only be taken out on request.”

This is probably a good thing — our being confused — since it is clear, as has been pointed out by SFN, that most of us don’t have a clue about basketball. Coach Lowe is D E V E L O P I N G basketball players, he doesn’t have a bench full of McDonald’s All-Americans from which to pick who plays . If Javi gets in foul trouble or has an off night or gets a virus or hangnail or banged up or … do we want Johnson (or any player for that matter) coming in without game experience?

Reading SFN is like kinda like panning for gold, you have to sift through a lot of worthless opinion — this post for example — to get to a few nuggets. 😉

  13. zahadum 02/06/2008 at 9:03 AM #

Well, no dunk for Javi, but I did get one wish in that for the first time in a long while JJ didn’t have to get all the rebounds.

A lot of folks seem to be considering Clemson as a lock for the tourney. I admit the odds are in their favor, but consider that they only have one less lose than us and 6 of their last 9 are on the road. Hopefully, they’ll lay a couple of eggs out of those games.

I agree with Packster that a little love is due Sid and the staff. No, they haven’t done a flawless job this season by any means. But given what they’ve had to deal with (lossing Degand, the debacle at UNC, Costner still MIA, constant media blathering about bad chemistry) they’ve done a fine job at keeping the guys heads in the season.

  14. Greywolf 02/06/2008 at 9:08 AM #

After last nights game, I can see why Grant was terse with reporters after yet another dumb-assed — do reporters have any other kind — question about chemistry.

I agree also. That game last night was lead by our starting Freshman – Javi and JJ. They were the absolute leaders on the court from the tip to the final buzzer. Freshman, both of them. Everyone played to win last night, but Javi and JJ lead the way. They both could be balled up and crying with embarrassament after the first two acc games, but this staff has made our freshman leaders.

Last night when Javi came out of the game for the first time, a fan behind be stood up an yelled “great job Javi” loud enough for most of the arena to hear it, and the rest of the fans started cheering, etc. That would not have happened a month ago. That is progress. That should be credited to the staff.

  16. WTNY 02/06/2008 at 9:12 AM #

Javi is getting some well deserved kudos here but he has got to work on taking the ball to the basket!

How many times did Javi hit the lane only to suddenly just throw the ball in a random direction? The box score may credit him with only 3 TO but he was certainly the genesis for more.

Having a PG that is a threat to take the ball to the hole will really help this team.

  17. eas 02/06/2008 at 9:12 AM #

    What is Costner’s injury?

  18. WTNY 02/06/2008 at 9:17 AM #

    eas – bruised rib

  19. Mr O 02/06/2008 at 9:21 AM #

WTNY: Yes, sometime he gets in the lane and there is nobody to pass the ball to. But, he did make a great play last night on a drive late in the 2nd half. Drove in the lane at the very end of the shot clock, dished down low when there was really not much of a passing lane to JJ, and JJ got fouled. Javi’s drive and dish bailed us out.

I think part of it is that we haven’t had a PG at NC State actually drives the lane since maybe Cliff Crawford for one season when he was a senior. Atsur was a great passer on the pick and roll, but he wasn’t a drive and dish guy like Javier.

It will be interesting to see if our pick and roll becomes effective again with Javi’s much improved three point shooting. In terms of seeing plays develop, he has a similar ability to McCauley in that he sees and makes passes that regular guys don’t even know are there.

Very, very tough matchup for Javi at Maryland. Wish I felt better about our chances.

  20. foz 02/06/2008 at 9:26 AM #

As mentioned above, the combo of Ben and JJ is working out better than BC and JJ. BTW, wassup with BC’s Carolina Blue tie?

I like that Javi(and Horner for that matter) seem to be gaining confidence in their shot. Although not very successful, Javi is also attempting to drive the lane. Hopefully this part of his game will improve with everything else.

Passing. I am confused on this one. Sometimes we make great passes (usually to someone cutting to the basket) then other times we try to trow the ball in between 3 defenders (trying too hard to make something?) and then we follow with a weak 10 foot pass to someone being guarded on the perimeter. Is this the IQ I keep reading about?

  21. eas 02/06/2008 at 9:26 AM #

Thanks! I thought it was a bruised ego?

  22. PAPacker 02/06/2008 at 9:31 AM #

Anyone have any insights on Mackey, Udell and McCray and how they are leaning?

  23. pacman23 02/06/2008 at 9:32 AM #

“I think the sloppy second half was a direct result of the defensive intensity in the first half wearing these guys out.”
No doubt about it, most of our guys seemed to be running on fumes late in the game (the CONDITIONING factor rearing its’ ugly head), but we really toughed it out when VT started to make things uncomfortably close. I never thought I would to be able to say we sweated out a ten point win-sure felt like this one was going down to the wire like every other ACC victory this season.
Man, if we can clean up those ridiculous unforced turnovers, and continue to improve our rebounding, we have a chance to be really good.
Props to Tracy Smith for his rebounding and defensive effort in the first half, and congrats to Javi-you are proving us all wrong here.
Keep up the good work, son.

  24. pacman23 02/06/2008 at 9:39 AM #

And oh yeah, happy birthday, Dennis Horner. A very nice performance tonight-that offensive rebound put back showed me something that I hope to see much more of as this interesting season progresses. Keep shooting the ball. You can’t make ’em if you don’t shoot ’em, and we all know you can!

  25. foz 02/06/2008 at 9:51 AM #

Since it has been discussed here before, from what I could hear in the bar, the announcers (Dwayne Ballen, Adrian Branch) were pretty good. I remember Ballen from WTVD (I think) years ago. He still looks 12 years old. There was a nice flashback to ’83, and props to Dematha where Branch played with Sid – who knew Danny Ferry played at Dematha -yikes.
