Unfortunately, it looks like we are only good for one half. I wonder what we are drinking in the lockeroom at halftime?

Defensive intensity was lacking in the second half and we had numerous offensive possessions where they stand around waiting for something to happen.

I just hope we can play a complete game before the end of the year.

A friend of mine and I were talking the other day about how hard it is to be a Wolfpack fan. When you really care, they crush your spirit. When you try to distance yourself emotionally, they do just enough to kindle that glimmer of hope… and then crush it again. I said we were like the Cubs but my friend pointed out that everybody kinda likes the Cubs and we are not “lovable losers.” We decided that we are the Oakland Raiders of college basketball. We used to be good, now we suck, and everybody thinks our we’re all psychos.

We gave tremendous defensive effort in the first half.

In the second, we came out flat (again) and Md stepped it up a bit. We have no one that could match up with Gist, our bigs are too slow and he can shoot over Gavin. Would Simon have made a difference?

But really, they wanted it more than us in the second and we let them have it.

I am not sure i have ever seen a team that has not played 2 halves through this many games… most teams play one half better than the other and in a few games they will play good both halves (cue ECU), but we just are not mentally able to get it done.

It’s not that we lost but how we were not able to compete AGAIN against the teams in the upper half. The ACC tourney will determine this teams fate for post season.

Buckwheat, Gilmore, and Osby..There wouldn’t be room enough on the court for but three players because of the hair! LOL!

    Back to the Ghetto!!!

“I’d rather see a player with that kind of great athleticism taking over a REAL basketball game.”

-Me too, of course, it was mostly just a joke about how badly Gist owned us last night

“As an aside… am I the only person on the planet that thought Fells layup attempt with the score 18-14 was an OBVIOUS goaltending violation?”

-In slow motion, I agree that it was definitely goaltending. The ball dropped quite a bit. In real time, I didn’t notice, and neither did the refs. Maybe they did not have a good angle. I thought some calls went our way in the first half, so we can’t really complain about the officiating on this one.

“Unfortunately, it looks like we are only good for one half. I wonder what we are drinking in the lockeroom at halftime?”

    -The Kool-Aid.

Since 1991, it seems like all we’ve done is struggle to catch up – we can simply never get ahead.

This game gave us the chance to get a LITTLE BIT ahead, give ourselves a LITTLE BIT of breathing room… instead, we lay a second-half egg, and we find ourselves in yet another must-win situation this Thursday.

THAT’S the part of being a Wolfpack fan that I’m simply sick and f’ing tired of. I’m tired of watching them struggle to break even, of being a perennial bubble team, of having hopes dashed every time it seems like there’s hope, of doing just enough to keep our heads above water every time it seems like we’re drowning.

But it’s predictable… which is why I stopped watching this one at halftime. There was no question that we were going to take a beating in the second half – I didn’t need to witness it.

    It’s just disheartening…

I say since we manage to blow the good starts and first half leads lets go back to slow starts. At least when we start slow we end up making a go at it in the second half.
Of course with the exception of the first two conference games.

in my view think there are a several good players on this team that don’t give a hoot about winning or losing. they look like they are going throught the motions. i’ll let you decide who you think they are, but the ultimate goal of a game is to win it, but i see some players where it looks like their goal is to show how talented they are. this team seems to be made up of several individuals with an individual mindset.

javi is definitely not in this category. jj, although he takes some very questionable shots when the other teams starts to make a run. i think he definitely starts pressing. overall, i see some players get excited, but they don’t try to excite the other players. seems the only time the players talk to each other, they seem to be bitching, not encouraging them or talking strategy. compare that with some teams near us that are 1 & 2 in the conference. that is just my view, but they do not seem to have a leader.

gavin has stepped up and won games, but he did it like an individual. when he or courtney aren’t hitting their shots, they aren’t leaders. same with brandon. to be a leader, you need to lead whether you are hitting your shots or not. vasquez from maryland is a leader.

i think javi will be a leader, but it’s tough for the freshman to step into that role. even ben when he gets excited, i don’t see him encouraging the other players to get fired up, he just pounds his chest or looks into the crowd, to say ‘did you see that.’ see, they great play at the end of the wake game. a great, hustle play, but to me, a strange reaction. again, watch some other teams, look at how the players interact, and then watch us. it’s different.

i’m not counting this team out by a long shot because the talent is there. i think we’re a year or two off because sid needs to get ‘his’ juniors and seniors on the court. these juniors and seniors are not ‘leading’ this team. they don’t have to be the leading scorer or rebounder, but they have to lead by example: don’t turn the ball over, don’t let your man drive right past you, don’t drop a pass that hits you in the hands, don’t pass to a teammate on a fast break without making your man commit to you, don’t let someone 4 inches shorter grab a rebound right next to you.

being a pack fan is definitely not easy.

    You from Chapel Hill? 😉

  10. Greywolf 02/10/2008 at 6:57 PM #

We should have creamed MD. Who the heck have they beaten for goodness sake?

  11. Dr. BadgerPack 02/10/2008 at 7:04 PM #

^I’m sure that is facetious 🙂

  12. Greywolf 02/10/2008 at 8:29 PM #

    How could you tell? 😉

“I didn’t expect us to win this one, but I will be very disappointed with a loss after the good effort in the first half.”

I won’t embarrass the poster by naming him, but how the heck do you “be very disappointed with a loss” when you “didn’t expect us to win” when the good effort produced an up by 2 points result?

Maryland is a very good team playing at home and they got on one of those rolls where everything they through up went in. A 14 point loss is not the end of the world.

As for all the brilliant (that’s facitious too, Dr. BadgerPack) ideas about how to sit everyone but the starting five, we ran out of gas last year playing the starting five 35 minutes a game. My guess is Sid is developing a team with the idea of winning it all in the ACCT.

“My guess is Sid is developing a team with the idea of winning it all in the ACCT.”

Greywolf, I’ve been thinking that for quiet awhile but for some reason I didn’t want to come out and say it. I hated to bring myself to admitting that is about our only hope for this BB season. But, if that is indeed the case, then I say should be seeing much more substituting and many more people coming in off the bench, earlier and RIGHT NOW.

  14. Dr. BadgerPack 02/10/2008 at 9:03 PM #

First and foremost, if Sid is going for the tourney title, he might consider getting a top 4 seed.

I know what you are saying. I wonder at times myself. We have some possible role players such as Harris, Fergie, and maybe Smith who might contribute. Coach Case used a guy named Ronnie Scheffel for nothing but full court press.

(my wife just called me to watch “something” on the Grammies. Tina Turner doing some of her old stuff with those back up singers, and Beonce joining for “Proud Mary” And man, that was “something.” Tina looked as hot as ever. What is she, 65?)

The last score I saw was 49-36 Clempson. Have we got a broken string in Chapel Hill?

  16. highstick 02/10/2008 at 9:52 PM #

We were spared having to watch women cry in Chapel Hill tonight.

I think I turned the TV on just in time to watch the game turn around against Clemson. Flopsborough was hitting the floor at every opportunity!

“We were spared having to watch women cry in Chapel Hill tonight.”

In line with the language policy on SFN, Oh, doodoo!!!

When we lost that nine point lead in the last two minutes of the half I knew we were screwed. Not coincidentally Costner subbes for Hickson right before we lost that lead. He is killing us. I do not know what happened to him but he needs to sit the bench for the rest of the year. He scored a few buckets tonight but he played like crap.

I have never seen a tech given to a player that says “and 1”. You could read his lips. No cursing or even words to the ref. Pretty absurd.

The ACC refs suck. This game was not one sided but was inconsistent.

Fells completely dissapeared and when he does that we struggle mightily.

  19. packgrad93 02/11/2008 at 10:14 AM #

The best thing for the program might just be the NIT instead of the NCAA’s. This team isn’t going to the FF anyway, why not be happy to play a few extra games to continue to develop this team, most of who will be back next year.

  20. Trip 02/11/2008 at 10:46 AM #

Any comment on Johnson’s play? I honestly thought he did well after his first few shaky minutes, and the unexpected offense was great. Javi was starting to get out of control in the 2nd half and he came in and made some plays. He’s still a bit on the slow side against some ACC guards, but he does play good smart defense and going 3/3 (including a 3 pointer) is a major improvement as we need him to be a scoring threat so it’s not 4on5.

  21. packgrad93 02/11/2008 at 11:27 AM #

Question, who’s going to play the 3 next season? CJ williams, Thomas, Horner, Fells?

  22. Trip 02/11/2008 at 11:29 AM #

Horner is probably the best replacement, but we all know Fells is secretly a 3 in a 2’s body. I could see Thomas getting some time at the 3 as well though.

  23. Rick 02/11/2008 at 11:31 AM #

I can see us using a three guard lineup with Fells at the 3.

  24. packgrad93 02/11/2008 at 12:10 PM #

Farnold, Javi & Fells? Mayes will get some PT IMO. Wonder if CJ Williams will play the 2 or 3?

  25. haze 02/11/2008 at 12:35 PM #

^ Yes to the 3G with Fells at 3. However, that line-up requires us to have an ACC-caliber 2G not named Fells. Our only real hope there is Mays. In a pinch, you might play Javy/Farnold together at 1-2 to get Fells to 3.

If Mays isn’t good enough to start, then I think you struggle b/c it’s hard to see Thomas or CJ Williams being 1st year starters at the 3. Within the current set of players, Horner shows little sign that he has the D or offensive game to start at the 3. Who else is there? I’d take Harris starting at 3 over Costner at 3 or Fergie at 2.
