Let’s Play Two!

Say Hey, Baseball has gotten underway. Check it out here if you haven’t made the trip to the Doak already. It’s a double-dip and it started around high noon. Did I mention that it’s against the pesky Mountain folk of Boone (they probably like these thick, peat smellin’, dreary days being from the highlands and all)?

Avent should give the ball to Surkamp in the first game. He is such a mirror opposite of Brackman that is nearly impossible to think they were teammates at the same HS in Cincy. He is flawlessly under control with his pitches and mechanics nearly always. That not only bodes well for pitch count but also keeps the defense sharp (as opposed to K’s, which are for pretty boys and facist according to Crash Davis). Also his sound mechanics have made him incredibly durable, another sharp contradiction to our last ace thats now trying to earn his pinstripes (God save him!).

In the second Ole’ Elliot will probably turn to Eryk McConnell , which could get interesting considering we would like to see our starter go more then a few innings.

Go Wolfpack!

Update, Pack splits against ASU 8-1 & 5-7
Thought we had ’em in the night cap, bottom 8 with the sacks full and Poulk at the plate. Credit to the App pitcher for gutting it out. One bright spot in the game was the 3.1 shut down innings by Jim Gilheeny.

Sunday’s rubber match is set for 1:30 at the Doak @ Dail. Get there if you can, it sounded over the airwaves like there were alot cobb pipe smokin’ weido’s that needed to be offset. Our starter is true frosh name of Buchanon. I was going to link his bio here but won’tGO.Pack was at it’s old tricks again.

    Badger,

You’re right about the lower level delivery. I’d forgotten about it.

As for wood bats v. aluminum, there has been some talk of using wood/composite mixtures. Those bats have the best of both worlds, a slower off-the-bat speed and the durability of the metals alloys. IIRC, they talked about it in the Real Sports show after showing some college players that had taken line drives off of the head. I’m no expert on the subject by any means, though.

Maybe the answer would be to require pitchers to wear a hard-shell protective helmet something like a batter’s helmet.

I believe there are some pitchers that actually were a protective insert in the fronts of their regular caps. A helmet would have to be pretty carefully designed– I mainly thinking about not inhibiting the pitchers ability to hold on baserunners (so these helmets would have to be like catcher’s, basically– but still stay on the head after the follow through).

Heh… imagine Mitch Williams trying to keep a helmet on his head while pitching…

What happened to phase out program from alum back to wood from 5-6 years ago? I’m sure that the NCAA brought that to the table and thought it was an edict.
Promise to be quick on story here.

When metal became legal in NCAA we had already won 2 straight ACC tourney championships, both at the expense of reg season leader Clemson.

We had a total of five get that 5 alumn bats at our disposal that 1st legal year and they were completely shunned.

First time we saw aircraft alloy really used was against…you guessed it, Clemson. Everyone of those guys used it…don’t think they even had one shred of ash showing on the bat rack. Beat us again in reg.

Got’em in the tourney that year for three straight
    nothin’ but wood.

However right before NCAA tourney we played Pebroke St. I broke 2 of my axes early and panicked when I could not find my other K55 Louisville, even went to the bully and asked one of the pitchers if they could drive back to Reynolds and grab me a stick. Well you know how that went over…pitchers and all ” Just use metal for cryin’ out loud.”

With no choice I did and promptly ripped a 400’er over the old snow fence at Doak to the cat calls of our pen.

Made damn sure that I had dozen Louisville K55s for the NCAAs.
