Facing the Facts – BJD Writes Off 2007-08

I hate to say it, and it makes me mad as hell to do so. But 2007-08 must be written off as a “learning year” for Sidney Lowe. Despite being an ACC school with all the institutional infrastructure needed to win, NC State is employing yet another head coach who has to learn on the job. After last night, there’s really no room for debate.

Go back to our post from a few weeks back, where we made clear that the offseason was handled very poorly:

It is time to call it as we see it — I honestly believe that the members of this program could not have done less in the offseason to prepare for the 2007-2008 Basketball season and everyone involved in NC State Basketball from Lee Fowler to the student manager owes Wolfpack Nation a huge apology.

I said it multiple times in the early season and I don’t understand how so many people in the media and on the internet don’t grasp it as they continue to wait for a big change &/or predict a turnaround. Our problems are fundamentally systemic. There is NO SWITCH to flip here to get things fixed. Players don’t just have epiphanies and start playing exponentially better when your problems include significant breakdowns of fundamentals like not playing defense, not boxing out/rebounding, not being able to shoot, not having a point guard or an offensive system that flows. We SUCK at the basic things that a team must do to compete in COLLEGE basketball.

More specifically, we told you:

At the start of this season I spoke with a few folks who are historically close to our program and two specifc comments in struck a chord with me at the time.

The first comment was related to conditioning (or the lack thereof). One gentleman shared that he “hadn’t seen bodies this out of shape on an NC State team since his relationship started with Coach Robinson almost 20 years ago.”

I knew what he meant the moment the team stepped on the court against William & Mary in November and it has manifested itself during the season. I have rarely seen a college team look more lethargic, slow, and disengaged than what we are witnessing this year.

…A poster on Pack Pride’s message boards astutely commented today “If you look at the muscle definition on the UNC and Clemson players and then look at our guys, you will see the difference. Other teams pay the price in the weight room. We clearly do not. Our guys, with the exception of Hickson and Tracy, physically look like a pick up squad of off-work bankers.”

Last week, I laid out a scenario to get to 8-8. Presently, one section is particularly relevant – it addresses the 50/50 road games left on our schedule. All 3 games are against inferior teams on a talent basis, that don’t present bad matchups. Here’s what I said:

Getting 2 out of 3 here would be huge, and probably necessary. Let me clarify what I mean by inferior – on a neutral court, I would expect NC State to be favored against all 3. Of course, if we play poorly (like we did in the home matchup against Wake), all bets are off. But I like our roster better than each opponent’s, and there are no bad matchups for us (no great outside shooting or multiple, dynamic guards).

If Fells can shut down or at least suppress Rice, Singletary, and Teague – then State is better at the other positions. I also expect momentum and motive to work in NC State’s favor – Boston College is in freefall, and Virginia is showing signs of weariness (due to their coach being a raving lunatic in the mold of his asshole mentor, Jim Calhoun). These two also have a somewhat lackluster home-court advantage. BC is worse than their record indicates, and UVA is better (3 of their ACC losses have come in overtime).

I haven’t changed my mind about BC – they are worse than their record indicates. I still think they only have one good player. But note my caveat – if Fells can shut down or at least supress Rice.

In what can only be described as a bizarre decision, Lowe decided to task his undersized, true freshman PG with guarding Rice. By the second TV timeout, Rice had eleven points. I suppose Fells guarded whichever stiff the Eagles had on the court at SG. There was no rational reason to expect this to work. And anyone could see, that it wasn’t working. But aside from a handful of first half minutes when Grant guarded him, Lowe stubbornly left Javi and MJ to deal with Rice. Naturally, he went on to tie his career high of 32 points, accounting for 39% of BC’s scoring (not counting assists related to shaking off Javi and forcing the defense to rotate). Even if Fells was destined to play in a haze, Rice at least couldn’t have shot over him at will.

Last night was a microcosm of the many problems within the program. Guys take plays, or even whole games off. Sid shakes his head in frustration (Note to Sid – that won’t accomplish squat) – he doesn’t seem to know what to do. I don’t know if it’s a question of preparation, motivation, or both. But it is Sid’s job to fix it. And it sucks to waste an entire (once promising) season because our coach isn’t ready and is learning on the job.

But our situation is what it is. There’s no way anyone should remotely consider tossing Sid (or any coach) overboard in their first two years of a rebuilding situation. It would be unfair, expensive, and definitely make our program look bad. We hired a guy who has to learn – so let’s see if he can do it. That does not mean SFN is handing out free passes. Writing off one year for “learning” is all that I’m willing to do. We need to see evidence of maturation in three categories next year. The mileposts are difficult, but necessary.

1) Significant Objective Improvement Next Year, Despite Losing Our Two Best Players. Yes, this is a tall order – but that’s just too bad. Another bad season means defining NC State as a losing program. An NCAAT bid would meet this criteria, maybe less than that if we earn an A+ for item #2 below.

2) Consistent Effort on Both Ends of the Floor. That likely requires more sticks and fewer carrots. This isn’t the NBA, where the players make more than you and have to be handled with velvet gloves. Guys that don’t want to play hard for 40 minutes should sit on the bench, then be forced out of the program. Despite what I’ve written above, I’m not trying to micromanage here – whatever motivational strategy Sid wants to use is fine with me. As long as it works. He has to figure that out starting with the 2008-09 season.

3) Sign Top Ten Class for 2009. This class must include a superstar, ready from Day One PG (likely Wall, other targets may exist) and another dominant player, such as Favors or Brown. The talent level on the roster is Les Robinson-caliber without a stud class for 2009. More role players aren’t going to cut it. You need multiple stars and a top-notch PG to have any shot to win in the ACC.

That’s pretty much it. Let us know your thoughts.

finding a competent AD that we can trust to find a good coach when the time come

You can forget Lee Fowler going anywhere. I wish it weren’t true but he has tenure in the Gang of Mediocrity that runs the largest university in the state.

I was too pissed off to post after the game and have had time to reflect some. I haven’t entirely written off the season but my give a Sh_t quotient is substantially reduced. Last year, we drove to see the Pack play all three games of the NIT on work days and made it back to work the day after the Drexel and WVU games. My wife and I did this because the team played with such heart we had to support them. This year, if NCSU only gets to the NIT, we will not be going to watch. We’ll be at the Clemson game on Saturday because we already have the tickets and I want to see the 83′ celebration. However, we will not come for the midweek UNC game though we also have tickets for that game. I’m just not willing to make the sacrifice during the work week to watch a team that doesn’t put forth a full effort. Instead, we will donate the tickets to the USO or the Big Brothers and Sisters organization. I don’t consider myself a fairweather fan, but sometimes you can only go so far to support an organization that is not willing to work hard to succeed. It’s not the losing that hurts – its the terrible attitude of the players/coaches. It’s just inexcusible. Nothing more to say about this particular group of individuals.

I’m not ready to write the season off yet. I recall a couple of years ago that, after a horrid home loss to a terrible UVa team, we were given no shot of making the NCAAs. That team eventually made the Sweet 16.

I readily admit, however, that there is no evidence indicating that we will turn it around. I also admit that the prospects for next year look bleak.

I think that Lowe is both intelligent enough and cares enough that he will do what it takes to improve himself. I do worry that he may be too loyal to staff/players to make the tough decisions and we certainly don’t have the leadership in the administration to nudge him along. And as some of you have already said – forget about Fowler leaving anytime soon unless there is extensive pressure from outside the administration (i.e. donors).

We are in dire need of leadership on the court and that will most likely not resolve itself this year. I like the body language of Hickson; he is beginning to assert himself on the rest of the team, but he is still a freshman. If by chance he comes back next year and we can get someone in backcourt to complement Hickson, I think that the overall attitude will change. It just can’t all be done on the sideline and in practice. We have seen all too many times what a lack of leadership on the football field has done to our teams (and vice versa). A little floor leadership would go a long way on this team. As good as coach K his, a big part of his success is that elder players pass on the work ethic to the younger players.

Sid needs to take responsibility and probably needs to assert himself more, but you need a team of character not characters.

Ugh. I said it before the game that defense on Rice would determine this game… our offense is ok… we score points… but our defense needs 40 hard minutes. We didn’t get it. Oh, and Fells should have guarded Rice all night long. I think he guarded him for like 2 possessions in the 2nd half when he was the PG.

Beat Clemson and I’ll forget this loss. Otherwise, we’re NIT bound and hope that Hickson is a WTNY type of guy.

It seems that several people are suggesting we should have hired a coach that didn’t need any on the job training and development. If I recall correctly, there was a lot of talk during the coaching search that a coach without a lot of experience that could develop into a great coach was exactly what we needed. Especially since we were striking out with the Barnes and Caliparis of the basketball world.

  7. EverettBeez 02/15/2008 at 2:00 PM #

What we should’ve done is open to debate, but a pretty useless one. We did what we did, and now we’ve got to hope that it goes well. Next year will be telling – heck the rest of this year should tell us something. Why it took him so long to threaten to sit guys who don’t play D is beyond me, and he doesn’t need to explain himself to me. Lets hope it has a positive effect.

  8. JimValvano 02/15/2008 at 2:06 PM #

I joined SFN a couple of years ago during the most exciting month of NC State basketball in 15 years…the day Sendek quit. I’ve really enjoyed the site for the most part, but today I think I may be posting for the last time.

THE SEASON IS NOT OVER. THE SEASON IS NOT LOST. YES…WE SUCKED LAST NIGHT. YES…WE SUCKED IN THE 2ND HALF AGAINST MARYLAND. WE’VE BEEN HORRIBLE AT TIMES THIS YEAR…NEW ORLEANS, EAST CAROLINA, MICHIGAN STATE, NORTH CAROLINA, DUKE…WE’VE BEEN EMBARRASSED. The fact of the matter is we still have games remaining in which we may be able to right this ship. I know the effort levels have looked atrocious at times, but lets assume that by some freak miracle our boys start hustling. If we beat Clemson and combine that with a Wolfpack type inspirational upset of the Tarholes (which lately looks possible with how the Tarholes have played) or with an upset of the Dookies…then we are actually in a position to be in the NCAA tournament. Think about it people…have you not seen NC State teams in the past rise to the occasion in the ACC TOURNAMENT. AS WOLFPACK FANS WE NEED TO GET BACK TO OUR ROOTS. WE NEED TO GET BACK TO WHAT MADE US GREAT. WE NEED TO EXUDE OUR GREAT CONFIDENCE IN OUR TEAM AND TRY AND GET OUR PLAYERS TO CATCH ON AND ADOPT THE SLOGAN WITH WHICH NC STATE HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS…”DON’T EVER GIVE UP”.

    YOU PEOPLE DISGUST ME.

  9. LRM 02/15/2008 at 2:09 PM #

    OH THE BEAUTY OF NAIVETE…

  10. jnew 02/15/2008 at 2:10 PM #

^^^Again, what makes you think we can right this ship? It has been posted many times on here by numerous people….there are too many problems to fix and no one (players, coaches, etc.) seems interested in fixing them. I am not going to let Sid’s post game comments (which were way overdue) give me any false sense of hope that things are going to change!

  11. JimValvano 02/15/2008 at 2:18 PM #

Blah blah blah…you are all a bunch of pessimists and as a matter of fact…I’m starting to think that even though you folks live in the Bible Belt you may need a little reminder of what makes our region just that…it’s called FAITH. This word is defined at Dictionary.com as “belief that is not based on proof”. A lot of you folks are Christians, I’m sure…so…apply what it takes to be a Christian to what it takes to be a Wolfpack fan. Have some faith in YOUR COACH AND YOUR TEAM. To those of you whom happen to be atheist…you don’t know about faith, so I’m not nearly as frustrated with you as I am with these other folks. I look at our team and I think…hmmmm…with increased effort we are better than every team in the league with the exception of the Tarholes, Dookies, and possibly Clemson. Then I think…hmmmm…with the increased effort…on a given night…WE CAN BEAT ANYBODY!

  12. JimValvano 02/15/2008 at 2:19 PM #

You aren’t the first to call Jim Valvano naive

  13. packer74 02/15/2008 at 2:21 PM #

JV. It’s fine to optimistic but this bunch has too many warts to become a Cinderella.

  14. jbpackfan 02/15/2008 at 2:27 PM #

Its hard to do what you said JimValvano, when the team doesn’t play inspired ball. I think many fans have reached their limit of never giving up. We have been hoping for miracles for 20 years, and one hasn’t happened. Every other year a great player comes in to be the savior of NC State, and every time we fail. The human spirit can only handle so much disappointment. I don’t know why this program has been stuck in a rut for all this time, and I don’t know how it can be fixed. I attended State from 1995-2000, during the time when we all thought the Pack was coming back. Well it didn’t happen, and I have spent the past 13 years living in the past, and recalling great memories I have from watching exciting basketball at Reynolds Coliseum (not only the basketball, the game experience itself). For 20 years the Wolfpack fans have suffered through disappointmenting games and seasons, and when we let our frustrations out to the world, we are called impatient, bad fans or whatever else. We have an administration who doesn’t care. All of this eventually leads to apathy. I am astounded at the passion State fans still have today, after all we’ve been through over the years. If any one of the posters on this site, or any other fan wants to write off the season, they have every right to do so, and based on the past 20 years, I can’t say I blame them. I’ll still be living and dying with every minute of every game the rest of this season, because I just can’t give up hope that one day it will all change.

  15. EverettBeez 02/15/2008 at 2:27 PM #

If the team just showed up and everyone played with effort that would be an accomplishment. And you can’t disagree that a tourny run is possible – though with our conditioning, I don’t see how we can win three, much four games in a row.
I do believe, and I want to hope – the team is just not giving me much of anything to even grasp on to.

to wit- two or three nice take aways in a row last night, zero baskets. beautiful slam by jj followed by BC working it into the paint and slamming it. Its simply to disturbing to relive. I am going to happy hour(s) even though its only 1:30.

  16. BillyVest 02/15/2008 at 2:29 PM #

I recall a couple of years ago that, after a horrid home loss to a terrible UVa team, we were given no shot of making the NCAAs. That team eventually made the Sweet 16.

That team had some weird injuries / illnesses that dogged them through Dec, Jan, and early Feb. They got healthy and hot and went to the Sweet 16.

I don’t see anyone, who’s going to come back from injury or a sick bed, to provide a spark for this team.

  17. jbpackfan 02/15/2008 at 2:29 PM #

    ^disappionting, not disappointmenting, sorry

  18. jnew 02/15/2008 at 2:29 PM #

^^^^Congratulations on your “faith”! Enjoy the ride by your damn self. I am not wasting any more weeknights/weekends waiting for this team to come around. It is just not going to happen. And if I am a pessimist, they made me that way because this is the first time I can remember ever feeling like this and this is the first year I have ever turned the channel from one of our games. If they (players, coaches) don’t care, why should I????? And don’t give me this they do care and they are trying their hardest. If that is what you think after you seen them play recently you are as full of shit as they are.

Funny thing is that I received my Wolfpack Club renewal application last night right before the game. Wow, they really made me want to spend my hard earned money on them after their effort last night didn’t they?!?! Maybe if I quit giving money to the program I wouldn’t feel so bad about the lack of effort.

A player or team’s potential means nothing if you never give forth the effort to achieve that potential.

  19. BillyVest 02/15/2008 at 2:31 PM #

Think about it people…have you not seen NC State teams in the past rise to the occasion in the ACC TOURNAMENT.

I’ve seen us do just enough to squeak into the NCAA’s. Run out of gas in ’97 and ’07, get crushed one year and choke the next, in the ACC finals.

I’ve never seen us get anything done in the ACC tournament other than come up short.

  20. 44legend 02/15/2008 at 2:35 PM #

A quick question about the AD position. Suppose we were to luck out an he were to get fired or conveniently resign in a year or two. What “ready made” AD are we going to be able to pluck that would have the experience not to botch a potential high major CRITICAL coaching search? Would it be a current BCS AD or would we have to go mid major, etc?? Just asking, because I’m wondering how far the sink hole could go.

I don’t trust Lee at all in finding a replacement should Lowe not work out, but what other options are there in bringing in a sure fire guy that would hit a home run? Why do we seem to never have truely shrewd leadership?

  21. Wulfpack 02/15/2008 at 2:37 PM #

My mother has been a lifelong Wolfpack fan, stuck with the team through thick and thin. She knows her stuff. And even she is totally disgusted with this team. Says they don’t deserve to wear the Wolfpack uniform.

You can say all you want about the heart and desire of the team last year. I agree it was wonderful. However, it has all been lost this year. This team has given up. I am beginning to think we will hear those words come out from one of our own very soon if things don’t change.

And based on how we have done against the top of the league (miserably) I don’t see how anybody can in their right mind say we can pull off a string of wins against them in the future. Must be “faith”. Blind faith.

  22. packof81 02/15/2008 at 2:37 PM #

The season is not lost but it has not been trending in a positive direction. We’ve had some good wins but we’ve also had some bad losses. Last night’s loss was a bad one. Unless we get some big wins down the final stretch, we’ll pretty much have to win the ACC tournament to get an NCAA berth.

  23. jnew 02/15/2008 at 2:39 PM #

I won’t be at the Clemson game this weekend but I am anxious to see how the fans at the game will react if we give another subpar performance regarding effort. I am sure I will find something else to break in the house since I won’t be at the game.

  24. choppack1 02/15/2008 at 2:41 PM #

JimmyValvano – You’re right about one thing. The season isn’t over. However, what is sad is that we are again putting ourselves in a situation where we HAVE TO WIN THE ACC TOURNAMENT to go the “Big Dance.” This doesn’t happen w/ good college basketball programs.

Please name one respectable program in the country that continually tanks in the regular season, yet wins it’s conference tourney to advance to the NCAAs.

  25. Ed89 02/15/2008 at 3:03 PM #

i’d like to see us come out for the game saturday with no names on the back of the jerseys — or better yet, maybe some 1983 throwback uniforms. this team definitely needs the ‘play for the name on the front not the name on the back’ mentality. right now, it’s not there as far as i can see.
