Facing the Facts – BJD Writes Off 2007-08

I hate to say it, and it makes me mad as hell to do so. But 2007-08 must be written off as a “learning year” for Sidney Lowe. Despite being an ACC school with all the institutional infrastructure needed to win, NC State is employing yet another head coach who has to learn on the job. After last night, there’s really no room for debate.

Go back to our post from a few weeks back, where we made clear that the offseason was handled very poorly:

It is time to call it as we see it — I honestly believe that the members of this program could not have done less in the offseason to prepare for the 2007-2008 Basketball season and everyone involved in NC State Basketball from Lee Fowler to the student manager owes Wolfpack Nation a huge apology.

I said it multiple times in the early season and I don’t understand how so many people in the media and on the internet don’t grasp it as they continue to wait for a big change &/or predict a turnaround. Our problems are fundamentally systemic. There is NO SWITCH to flip here to get things fixed. Players don’t just have epiphanies and start playing exponentially better when your problems include significant breakdowns of fundamentals like not playing defense, not boxing out/rebounding, not being able to shoot, not having a point guard or an offensive system that flows. We SUCK at the basic things that a team must do to compete in COLLEGE basketball.

More specifically, we told you:

At the start of this season I spoke with a few folks who are historically close to our program and two specifc comments in struck a chord with me at the time.

The first comment was related to conditioning (or the lack thereof). One gentleman shared that he “hadn’t seen bodies this out of shape on an NC State team since his relationship started with Coach Robinson almost 20 years ago.”

I knew what he meant the moment the team stepped on the court against William & Mary in November and it has manifested itself during the season. I have rarely seen a college team look more lethargic, slow, and disengaged than what we are witnessing this year.

…A poster on Pack Pride’s message boards astutely commented today “If you look at the muscle definition on the UNC and Clemson players and then look at our guys, you will see the difference. Other teams pay the price in the weight room. We clearly do not. Our guys, with the exception of Hickson and Tracy, physically look like a pick up squad of off-work bankers.”

Last week, I laid out a scenario to get to 8-8. Presently, one section is particularly relevant – it addresses the 50/50 road games left on our schedule. All 3 games are against inferior teams on a talent basis, that don’t present bad matchups. Here’s what I said:

Getting 2 out of 3 here would be huge, and probably necessary. Let me clarify what I mean by inferior – on a neutral court, I would expect NC State to be favored against all 3. Of course, if we play poorly (like we did in the home matchup against Wake), all bets are off. But I like our roster better than each opponent’s, and there are no bad matchups for us (no great outside shooting or multiple, dynamic guards).

If Fells can shut down or at least suppress Rice, Singletary, and Teague – then State is better at the other positions. I also expect momentum and motive to work in NC State’s favor – Boston College is in freefall, and Virginia is showing signs of weariness (due to their coach being a raving lunatic in the mold of his asshole mentor, Jim Calhoun). These two also have a somewhat lackluster home-court advantage. BC is worse than their record indicates, and UVA is better (3 of their ACC losses have come in overtime).

I haven’t changed my mind about BC – they are worse than their record indicates. I still think they only have one good player. But note my caveat – if Fells can shut down or at least supress Rice.

In what can only be described as a bizarre decision, Lowe decided to task his undersized, true freshman PG with guarding Rice. By the second TV timeout, Rice had eleven points. I suppose Fells guarded whichever stiff the Eagles had on the court at SG. There was no rational reason to expect this to work. And anyone could see, that it wasn’t working. But aside from a handful of first half minutes when Grant guarded him, Lowe stubbornly left Javi and MJ to deal with Rice. Naturally, he went on to tie his career high of 32 points, accounting for 39% of BC’s scoring (not counting assists related to shaking off Javi and forcing the defense to rotate). Even if Fells was destined to play in a haze, Rice at least couldn’t have shot over him at will.

Last night was a microcosm of the many problems within the program. Guys take plays, or even whole games off. Sid shakes his head in frustration (Note to Sid – that won’t accomplish squat) – he doesn’t seem to know what to do. I don’t know if it’s a question of preparation, motivation, or both. But it is Sid’s job to fix it. And it sucks to waste an entire (once promising) season because our coach isn’t ready and is learning on the job.

But our situation is what it is. There’s no way anyone should remotely consider tossing Sid (or any coach) overboard in their first two years of a rebuilding situation. It would be unfair, expensive, and definitely make our program look bad. We hired a guy who has to learn – so let’s see if he can do it. That does not mean SFN is handing out free passes. Writing off one year for “learning” is all that I’m willing to do. We need to see evidence of maturation in three categories next year. The mileposts are difficult, but necessary.

1) Significant Objective Improvement Next Year, Despite Losing Our Two Best Players. Yes, this is a tall order – but that’s just too bad. Another bad season means defining NC State as a losing program. An NCAAT bid would meet this criteria, maybe less than that if we earn an A+ for item #2 below.

2) Consistent Effort on Both Ends of the Floor. That likely requires more sticks and fewer carrots. This isn’t the NBA, where the players make more than you and have to be handled with velvet gloves. Guys that don’t want to play hard for 40 minutes should sit on the bench, then be forced out of the program. Despite what I’ve written above, I’m not trying to micromanage here – whatever motivational strategy Sid wants to use is fine with me. As long as it works. He has to figure that out starting with the 2008-09 season.

3) Sign Top Ten Class for 2009. This class must include a superstar, ready from Day One PG (likely Wall, other targets may exist) and another dominant player, such as Favors or Brown. The talent level on the roster is Les Robinson-caliber without a stud class for 2009. More role players aren’t going to cut it. You need multiple stars and a top-notch PG to have any shot to win in the ACC.

That’s pretty much it. Let us know your thoughts.

I mostly agree with the assessment, other than this:

    >We clearly do not. Our guys, with the exception of Hickson
    >and Tracy, physically look like a pick up squad of off-work
    >bankers.

Grant has hit the weight room and it shows.

I would also add that I am not a fan of the offense Lowe is trying to run at all. 🙁 It just does not work at the college level in my opinion. At least not with the talent level we have.

RAWFS – I don’t know if it’s coaching or not. I know what I’ve heard and seen w/ my own eyes. I won’t say too much, but I’m very concerned that our team’s play IS a reflection of the leadership.

Finally, I don’t want another NC State coach fired until we dump Lee Fowler. He botched his last basketball hire, he shouldn’t be allowed to do it again.

Lowe says,“The bottom line is we have to play better defense and be tougher and stronger. We need to be tougher physically and mentally. We can’t let guys go off on us and then let the secondary and third guy score and get rebounds. We just have to take on the challenge. I told the guys from this point on, I’m playing guys that are going to defend. If you can’t defend, I’m going to take you out of the game. I don’t care if it’s two minutes into the game I’m going to take you out. I need somebody that’s going to get stops for us.”

    Pacman says,
“I’m not writing off the season yet, although it’s very tempting to do so and I surely know the coaches have not done so. But what about the players, who have to read and hear this kind of thing?”

well, Pacman, I sure hope so. Any player who quits because he is not playing the way he is coached to play and wants to quit on the season, can pack his bags and transfer. I say good ridance.

I have been a staunch defender of Coach Lowe for not calling out individuals publicly. And still am. Letting players know what is expected is not calling them out. As a participant in anything in life — be it sports, work, socially, or blogging on SFN — being told what is expected is not something to cry about.

significant breakdowns of fundamentals like not playing defense, not boxing out/rebounding, not being able to shoot, not having a point guard or an offensive system that flows.

^^The offense was fine last night. We shout what, 47, 47, 48, FG%. We outscored BC in the paint by at least double almost tripple. We just let them put the ball in the basket at will. Nothing really wrong with our offense.

  5. Six Pack 02/15/2008 at 11:28 AM #

State has been throwing lazy passes and committing too many uncontested tournovers as long as I can remember. They threw them and committed them under Valvano, Robinson, Sendek, and now Lowe.

I am so sick of the same old shit every year. Can we not find a coach that can teach his players how to dribble, throw crisp passes, come to the ball when it is thrown, use their pevit foot, and not be so damn lazy!

  6. Par Shooter 02/15/2008 at 11:32 AM #

I totally agree on Fowler. The best justification for sticking with Lowe another year is to spend that year finding a competent AD that we can trust to find a good coach when the time comes.

  7. Mike 02/15/2008 at 11:40 AM #

I am confused. I also see lack of effort, and while I hate to make this comparison, ol Roy will not hesitate to pull anyone for lack of effort. He will put in 5 walk-ons if he has to. Personally, I would rather see 5 walk-ons than 5 guys walking up and down the court.

Now I think the real issue is D. Why is it one guy always has a career night against us? I used to think we were just unlucky. But the more I think about it, the more I analyze, the more I see just prorr defense. Defense is all about desire, and we all already know there is no desire. I look at K in Durham, and while I cant stand the attitudes, why do they play such ahrd nosed D? Desire (or fear of getting the crap kicked out of them by their coach) to really give the effort to play hard nosed D. I honestly dont think Duke has the talent to win in this league playing 4 guards and small forward, but they are unbeaten in the league because they play stifling defense (and flop, but hey at least they TRY).

When you play tough D, you get a lot of easy transition points. Want to see your avg go up? Play D and get some lay-ups. We had two breakaways in a row last night, first on Grant’s intentional no foul, and then Costner’s breakaway. Why did these guys have breakaways? Their man was on the O glass, and they were cherry picking. DESIRE, HUSTLE, BLOCKING OUT, CRISP PASSES all come from wanting it. I know these guys are mostly HWSNBN players, and maybe that has something to do with it. Javi Lopez is one guy who I think hustles, scraps, and fights, but is limited physically. But the kid has heart, and we need more guys like him. Last night was crushing from this persepctive – I hated to see the cameras always focusing on O’Cain when things were going bad for the football team. O’Cain would stand on the sidelines with a clueless look on his face. I saw that last night with Sid. Maybe it was because the things he tries to teahc in practice dont carry into the games. Which brings me back to desire – if you dont want to play HARD, bring in someone who will. 5 walk-ons ahead of 5 walk down the courters any day for me.

  8. EverettBeez 02/15/2008 at 11:44 AM #

We can’t start to churn ball coaches. If you think the program is in trouble now, wait till we are on the 3 coach in 6 years. I wish Whit had gotten at least a call – how insulting was that? – but it doesn’t matter what # choice Lowe was, he is the HC, and we need him to do well. I couldn’t agree more that he’s acted to slowly in benching guys who don’t come to play defense.

Please, Lord, let there be a great run to finish the season, and a great tourny run. Though some how I expect our suffering to continue.

  9. ktoh 02/15/2008 at 11:46 AM #

perhaps we got the wrong coach from BC????

  10. Par Shooter 02/15/2008 at 11:51 AM #

I’ve always had mixed feelings about Skinner at BC. I love how his teams play except that they seem to have a pretty high thug quotient. They usually play really hard and make you earn everything on both ends but I wouldn’t really want guys like Sean Williams or Marshall wearing State jerseys. I do like the tight pattern flex O he runs and I’ve always thought this his guys are the best passers and catchers in the league. His teams do lots of things that reflect very good teaching and fundamentals.

  11. Rick 02/15/2008 at 11:51 AM #

” I think much if not most lay at the player’s feet. You cannot convince me that Herb Sendek and Sidney Lowe both haven’t gone over what to do in certain situations with Courtney Fells, and then Fells goes and repeats the errors over and again.”

I am just not sure what the problem is. No question Lowe will have plenty of time for us to maek that determination.

I can tell I will tire quickly of noah.

  12. 66pack 02/15/2008 at 11:54 AM #

the status at ncsu is just find with chapel hell, board of governors of unc, dean and oblinger who only wants to hang on until retirement for he ,just like fowler,is not nor ever will be be a candidate for at any 1st tier school.

  13. Mr O 02/15/2008 at 11:58 AM #

Choppack: I certainly hope you aren’t refering to the promptness and attendence of any of our coaches.

The failure of Sidney Lowe as our basketball coach ultimately comes back to Lee Fowler. If there is no NCAA bid next season or there is no top 10 recruiting class, then we should start hearing about Lee Fowler’s impending retirement.

  14. packgrad93 02/15/2008 at 11:58 AM #

“Neither Sanders or Rice was in anybody’s Top 100 ”

Sanders was the RI player of the year, hardly unheard of.

BJD: Dude, it’s RHODE ISLAND. Not to knock one of my favorite Les-era players, but Curtis Marshall was the Nebraska POY, too.

Excellent assessment of the coaching/personell. It’s easy to go off on the coach/team/AD/boss/dog/wife(if you are really foolish) and not so easy to find a viable solution.

Looking at your last sentence and agreeing whole heartedly (If everyone played the game like Ben McCauley, getting nasty diving after loose balls, setting hard picks, making smart passes, we’d be a much better team. But they don’t. It is if they are incapable of learning it.) my smart-assed comment is. If wishes were horses, we’d all take a ride. Very few of this current team are going to play the way Ben McCauley plays.

At the first of the season I interpreted Ben’s attitude as one of self-centeredness. I wondered if it wasn’t pure upset and disgust with the way some of his teammates were playing. I wonder if Lowe holding Ben out wasn’t more of wanting to see who else would show up. I ask myself a question I invite all to ask of themselves. If you were busting your butt to be the best you could be, how would you feel about a team full of mates who gave it something less?

  16. BladenWolf 02/15/2008 at 12:01 PM #

After last nights debacle, I think it’s quite obvious that this season has been an abject failure. I see no redeeming qualities to look at whatsoever. Every damn player on the court is playing worse than last year (if they played any significant minutes). Who has improved? Costner? Horner? McCauley? Grant? Fells?

Writing it off or not, the Pack simply failed in every area where we had to be fundamentally sound (read: defensive pressure, good passing, relentless rebounding, execution of the offense that the defense is giving you) and have not bettered ourselves in the intangible areas (off season conditioning is one, mental toughness to overcome the opponents runs is another).

I’m pissed. And I don’t think my anger has a damn thing to do with enabling a “throwing away the season” mentality. My anger is squarely directed at the lack of effort from all parties including the coaching staff, players, and jock washers.

Whether it’s Sidney Lowe or Brandon Costner shaking their head is beside the point. This is February 15th, not December 15th and the corrections should have been made long ago.

BJD: Bingo. That’s why I’m writing the season off, and hope that the hard lessons have been learned.

Anyone remember where we were picked to finish in the ACC at the start of the season? And most agreed at that time that we had the ingredients to be a top tier team. We just got man-handled last night by the worst team in the league…(sigh).

  17. Par Shooter 02/15/2008 at 12:03 PM #

Is this Warrior Ben that you refer to the same guy who generally gets 1 or 2 rebounds per game in roughly 25-30 minutes of post play? He looks the part of a gritty, “do the little things” guy but the numbers don’t lie. If he rebounded as well as he should then we’d be a much, much better team.

  18. choppack1 02/15/2008 at 12:07 PM #

Mr O – I’m not going to say a whole lot, but let’s just say that what I’ve heard and what I saw once – are consistent. I’m not going to outright say that this definitely is a problem – but rather, there’s evidence that it is.

IMHO, if/when we miss the tourney this year, Lee Fowler should be fired. His handling of this high profile hire was so utterly pathetic that he should have to pay w/ it for w/ his job. The only thing I worry about is our administration’s ability to identify that good AD. After all, MAF – who actually seemed to have good leadership skills – brought in Lee. Waiting until next year is too long.

  19. Dan 02/15/2008 at 12:08 PM #

This season was lost after the very first game. Check that. This season was lost on whatever day Sidney Lowe looked and JJ Hickson and thought he could carry this team all by himself. Because that is the day Sidney broke out this ridiculous middle school offense we are running.

I’ve seen some bad basketball teams at NC State in years past, but I’ve never been disgusted by both the effort and the gameplan like I have this season.

  20. Dan 02/15/2008 at 12:13 PM #

Btw, I totally agree with BJD’s three points.

Personally, though, I’m not really giving Sid that much time. He has until next Signing day. And to tell you the truth, I’m not impressed with how the ’09 class is shaping up. Offering a mid-tier prospect this early does not exactly reek with confidence. I hope they prove me wrong.

  21. Sam92 02/15/2008 at 12:23 PM #

the fair thing to do is to evaluate Sid at the end of next season

n.b.: basketball coaches don’t need as long as football coaches do to get their team or “system” in place (hoops players don’t need the same development time)

  22. packgrad93 02/15/2008 at 12:30 PM #

“Dude, it’s RHODE ISLAND. Not to knock one of my favorite Les-era players, but Curtis Marshall was the Nebraska POY, too”

    from scout:
Sanders the #86 ranked player inthe country

“Strong bodied prospect who is a high major and Top 100 caliber in his class nationally.”

    like I said, hardly unknown.

  23. Mr O 02/15/2008 at 12:32 PM #

Choppack1: Fowler just got a contract extension thru 2013. Knowing what we know in terms of how NC State handles these situations, do you realistically expect Lee Fowler not to finish his contract?

Seriously? I think you and I both know that there isn’t anyone with any sense of urgency at NC State who would have the willingness to make a move on Lee Fowler. It just won’t happen.

I don’t know the issues behind the scenes with the basketball program, but it certainly sounds like some changes need to be made. Unfortunately, I don’t have much confidence in our BOT, Chancellor, Lowe or Fowler to make the necessary changes. Lowe because of his inexperience and the rest of them for due to their track records.

When I went to Duke/State game at Cameron, I started thinking about how essentially our program today really has no link to the past anymore. Sitting in Cameron, which isn’t half as impressive as Reynolds, made me realize that we have either been horrible or mediocre for far too long for the history of our program to be relevant today. The folks at Duke built their program into one of the nation’s best while at the same time the people at NC State let our program crumble to pieces. The BOT, the Chancellors, the ADs, and the basketball coaches have all played a part in it.

We are just like everybody else out there now. No different from Wake, BC, UVa, or GT. No different from most other mediocre BCS conferences and no different from a lot of the top tier mid-majors. We will have to catch lightning in a bottle to ever be a major player on the national level again.

  24. EverettBeez 02/15/2008 at 12:37 PM #

ouch Mr. O — your observation might be true, but that hurt. Kick us while we are down why don’t you!

No matter how accurate your point is (and it certainly rings true) it doesn’t explain the fact that this team, as a team, basically never shows up for games.

that pesky “post you are commenting on doesn’t exist in the database” do-dad is showing up again, that every get explained?

  25. choppack1 02/15/2008 at 1:03 PM #

Mr O – One of the saddest things I read on message boards is when someone sends an e-mail to Oblinger about Lee Fowler. His response is usually the same (if you are to believe the post): “I encourage you to talk to Lee Fowlers, he loves to engage the fans and welcomes the feedback of the fans.”

When I do send my e-mail the Chancellor, he needs to understand, it’s not really Lee Fowler I’m criticizing – but it’s him for keeping Lee Fowler.

How does this sound, “You know Jim, I think that guy Joe who reports to you is doing a lousy job. He doesn’t do things he says he’s going to do, and provides lousy customer service.” Then Jim replies, “You know, Joe would welcome your feedback. He loves talking to the customers!”

What are you likely to think of Jim?? Does it sound like he’s listening? Does it sound like he’s getting “it”?

I do believe it’s too early to write off Sidney – unless he committs a major violation or we lose a couple of kids to academics this summer. However, if we miss the tourney this year and miss it again next year – I think we’re putting Sidney’s interest in front of NC State. Remember, he has no proven record of success of being a Head Coach at ANY level. We can’t afford to wait until we conclusive evidence that he’ll never be a good coach. After year 3, we’ve got to say, we went to the tourney the 5 years before you arrived. We haven’t been back since – would you like a job in our Alumni Relations department?
