“I’m not as much a football guy, but how can we be that low with all the buzz of these recent top recruits? they aren’t that great?”

we have 2 commits from the espn top 150, one commit (glennon) from rivals top 100, and zero 5 star commits according to all the sites. now, like TOB said, stars are for restaurants, but it would explain the good, but not great, ranking.

but TOB’s staff has before been recognized as fantastic talent evaluators. so if they think the kid can play, i’d take their word for it.

Davis was able to build a strong recruiting base at Miami, based on the national name recognition and success that the previous coaches had attained. He succeeded on the field, IMO anyway, based on talent superiority more than anything.

Today, we’re seeing The U, Clemson and Florida State putting together Top 10 classes, plus VT and NCSU putting together top 20 groups. (The actual numbers depend on who you listen to.) Davis just will not be able to build that edge in talent in the ACC, there are too many good teams and traditional teams, plus the fact is that the rules are not so easily bent as they once were. No one will play wide receiver on a track scholarship, for example.

That means Davis will have to coach to win — and we’ll see how good he is at that. I don’t think of him in the Urban Meyer category of mad genius strategists of the game, but we’ll see.

Newt: I agree that his recruiting success was largely due to being the coach at the U. As far as his coaching today at UNC, I was just saying the experience being the head coach at the U has certainly better prepared him to be the UNC coach than anything Chuck Amato had ever experienced at FSU.

Butch isn’t going to out talent Miami, FSU, Clemson or VPI. But with 19 four star recruits the last two years, he will most certainly have the talent to compete in the upper half the conference. How well he does will depend on a lot of other variables, some variable coaches can contral and some they cannot.

TOB’s success at a place like BC is probably more proof of pure coaching ability at this level than Butch’s success at Miami. However, either way I think Butch will have enough talent based on his reputation and obvious recruiting ability to make UNC a consistent bowl team even if he is just an above average coach.

TOB and BMFD in NC are going to make it a lot more difficult for Grobe at Wake.

Article a couple days ago from scout.com about what happened to the 5-star prospects from 2004 (which should have had their 4 years in college unless they red-shirted). It’s interesting to see the variability that is inherent in recruiting even the prospects that are considered the best of the best. DeMario Pressley garnered a “revised rating” of 3.5 stars, which seems about right.

I really have no idea what kind of need vs. get situation they have at UNC. Did they get stars and numbers at positions where they needed stars and/or numbers?

TOB is different from the later version of CTC in that he really got what he really needed numbers-wise (1 QB, many OL, many LB) and he got at least one big star at each of those positions. THAT is good recruiting. Of course, CTC did the same thing at some positions (DL, RB), so we’ll have to see how it goes long term. I do have confidence that TOB will coach ’em up better than Chuck. Again, don’t know about BMFD.

  7. Ismael 02/06/2008 at 5:55 PM #

Actually Brandon Barnes was a 5 star recruit at the beginning of the year but because he played more defense this season and had less offensive numbers rivals dropped him down to a four-star. I really don’t care about stars…TOB only had 1, count that 1 (one) 5-star recruit while he was at BC and you saw what he did with chopped-liver…he turned out NFL lineman like a sausage factory.

You guys go on rivals, they have all the free videos of these guys and watch Roy Mangram hit people. Man the guy doesn’t care about his body or the body of the runningback/receiver…he lays people out man, it looks almost illegal what he does. I also think Tobias Palmer will have an amazing career at NC State. Also…today i was watching the ESPNU webcast of the top guys announce committments, and all of the top wide receivers, guess who was throwing to them in the UnderArmor Game, yep, Mike Glennon…the dude looks awesome.

After reading the whole list of recruits, I was really surprised by the number of these guys that were team captain for their high school team. I don’t know if that means anything or not, but it sounds like TOB is recruiting leaders.

  9. graywolf 02/06/2008 at 8:32 PM #

TOB has recruited what we need the most……big mobil OL and what appears to be a real QB. In two years we will really see the difference. Great class with the potential to solve massive problems in the short run.

  10. Pack92 02/06/2008 at 9:32 PM #

BMFD experienced what he needed at the U to prepare him for what he supposedly is going to do at unx? How’s that? Exactly how awesome was the Big East when he was coaching in it? I believe CTC had a couple of NC’s under his belt when he came to State (at least 1) and had spent years around a consistent winner/recruiter in Bobby Bowden. Or maybe it was walking off the job with the Browns that got ‘ol butch-slap so ready? No, that should have added to his legend.
I hope he does pull in all the made-for-paper boys. It will be all that much better when a football TEAM from NC State hands his butt to him. It won’t matter anyway. If the pansy heels think a paltry 291K is going to keep BMFD in the hole they’re fools. After all, he ALMOST won a NC.

Yes this sounds about right, and will be agood change of mentality in the team

Frankly, I liked it better when they had a big doofus head coach, were signing 18 two-star TEs out of Virginia and claiming they’d be the next Julius Peppers.

I’m ready for Davis to move on to his next job.

  15. primacyone 02/07/2008 at 10:31 AM #

Very intersting stuff coming out of TOB’s mouth at the presser yesterday. Of particular note is his thoughts on the QB situation.

“…One thing we had to do was bolster up our lines on both sides of the football. If you look at our recruiting, it’s very solid on the offensive line, a lot of young kids. What we did on defense is we had a better opportunity… some junior college kids on defense that were a fit for us. That allows us to take a look at Bedics and Larsen in the spring to see how they look along the offensive line. We did not control the line of scrimmage very much at all last year on both sides of the ball. Those were priorities for us, to go out and find those types of players.

We looked for older players, more mature players that could come in and play right away.. it’s better for those young offensive linemen that we signed to be able to redshirt until they mature and grow a little bit. That’s a great looking group of guys coming in, but you’ve got to give them a chance to grow into their position.

Last year we had 18 seniors, there’s not many seniors on this football team…. there’s only 14 seniors on this football team and close to half of them have been walk ons or transfers over the past couple of years.

That’s where we went to go find those people… to give those young kids an opportunity to grow into their role in the future.

What are your plans for Mike Glennon? Do you plan on redshirting him?
I think we prefer to redshirt linemen. Skill kids… they sometimes have the opportunity to play.

In the situation of Mike Glennon, he’s very talented. He has a lot of potential. But as Joe Paterno once said, all potential means is you haven’t done anything. He’s been very successful at the high school level, and very successful in every all-star game he’s played in. He’s a very talented individual.

He’s not sure what he wants to do… whether he wants to redshirt or play, but I know all those kids are competitors and once they get here and figure it out and they want to play. If he’s the best guy for the job he’s going to play.

We have a pretty good freshman on campus also in Russell Wilson. We’re going to take a long look at him in spring practice, give him a lot of opportunities because we like what we’ve saw in him.

I think the bottomline is with those two young kids, that should be a pretty good position for us going forward

When O’Brien talked about the 14 seniors and his plan for 5 years with a player, it was a pretty pointed indictment of amato’s failures to recruit and retain. i don’t know how many of the ’03 and ’04 classes are gone due to the NFL, but i’m willing to bet the majority of those gone from the program are due to other reasons.

TOB in his press conference once again praised Russell Wilson’s game and put his name as one that will be in contention for the starting QB job.

well BMFD is all over my paper this am. you would think he landed the top class in the country the way the New Bern Sun Journal is gushing over him.

  19. Sam92 02/07/2008 at 11:30 AM #

We had a good recruiting class. Sadly, butch davis scored big time on signing day and unc has a lot of talent coming in. but it seems that, although we don’t have as many superstar recruits as a lot of other teams, our class is fairly deep with good talent, all in all a very good haul.

now, for those of us who are way more into football than basketball, begins that 7 month dry spell part of the year until the season begins.

  20. Mike 02/07/2008 at 11:37 AM #

I trust TOB’s record. Also with regards to captains, I am sure most of the 3 and 4 star guys across the country were all captains. Any player being recruited by the major D-1 schools is a probably a captain by default simply by being the best player on his HS team. There are exceptions, but dont put too much stock in the cpatains issue.

I was thrilled to hear the comments about R. Wilson. THAT is the kind of source I like to hear it from! 🙂

  22. choppack1 02/07/2008 at 4:36 PM #

Noah – It’s important to remember that some of us may know someone who had watched him play as well, and this was part of the reason we were hoping to see him last year. In addition, for the first half of the season, there was the “he can’t do any worse” factor. I stopped clamoring for Wilson when Evans strung together some good games after the bye week. (We got victories over ECU and UNC, I don’t figure I can ask much more out of a great kid who God hasn’t blessed w/ a cannon arm and strong legs.)

I’m looking forward to the spring game so I can see Wilson w/ my own eyes and see if I agree w/ my source. You can put two and two together and figure out that there’s a reason why Tony Haynes and Hendu were asking our coach about Wilson. What we’ve heard from TOB is very encouraging.

Sam92 – Here in Winston, our local paper in their preview section had the following bullets on the first page (*Carolina has 34th ranked recruiting class*Wake, as in past, signs FL athletes) – no mention of our class in that little blurb.

  23. Noah 02/07/2008 at 8:10 PM #

I had heard good things about Wilson when he was at our football camp as a high school senior. Last year, I just wanted to know WHO was saying that Wilson was supposed to be good.

At the time, we were in a “Put in the next guy!” mode. Evans starts, put in Beck! Beck starts, put in Burke!

I just wanted to separate wheat and chaff.

  24. Greywolf 02/07/2008 at 9:19 PM #

Here’s a small difference in TOB & CTC. Some of the material on the football web site was always out of date with CTC. Apparently not so with TOB. Geron James is on the roster as is Ahmad Jaradat. Anderson and Hickman are no where to be seen. Attention to detail. Apparently TOB feels it means something to be on the NCSU football roster.

  25. choppack1 02/07/2008 at 9:40 PM #

Noah – I’d seen enough of Burke in the spring game and those 3 passes against Louisville or Clemson to realize that he had a better arm than Evans, but seemed to make worse decisions. I knew he wasn’t the answer.

I was definitely thrilled w/ Evans for that 3 game stretch…
