Denial Runs Deep at NC State

I didn’t expect to get even madder when I read the sports page this morning. But then I read these quotes from Ben McCauley:

“It may seem like it but we’re still trying to [win],” junior forward Ben McCauley said. “We’re definitely trying to.

“I don’t think we’ve forgotten how to win [but] I think we’re kind of one step behind. We’re almost there.”

Almost there? Are you fucking kidding me? The last place team, the team who was winless against non-Boston College ACC foes, was beating you by 27 early in the second half. Maybe there’s a new meaning for “almost” that I just haven’t heard of yet.

How do we get out of this mess? Pretty simple, says Big Ben:

“We have to win these last three games and do very well in the ACC Tournament,” McCauley said. “If not win it, get to the finals and hope for the best. But we can’t think about the ACC Tournament right now. We got to win these last three games.”

How about a manageable goal – like showing up ready and fucking willing to play hard for a full 40 minutes. Just once. Then talk about how motivated everyone will be in the offseason to work hard, get in shape, and make sure they never have to suffer such humiliation ever again. Forget the NCAAT, NC State is on the outside of the NIT bubble right now. There’s nobody on the NCAAT selection committee even thinking about NC State.

This team and this coach continue to act like there are no major, systemic problems with the lousy product they are putting on the court. Like there is some magic switch that will flip, and NC State will get “hot” just like every opponent magically seems to do against NC State.

Here’s a hint – they are outworking you. It started with offseason workouts and fall practice, and continued through yesterday’s shoot-around. From the game recap thread, here’s what SFN commenter WolftownVA81 saw yesterday:

Being at the game today, I’ll offer my few observations. We got there when the doors openned 1-1/2 hours before game time so we got to see the shoot arounds, warmups and stretches. We had good seats on row A at the 300 level just behind the NCSU basket so we had a good view.

1. Our guys were not taking the shoot around serious. They were laughing and having a good time while most of their shots bricked.

2. The UVA players were all business and were making most of their shots. At one point my wife commented UVA had made 10 or 12 in a row from the 3 pt. line and we’re going get killed today.

3. When stretch time came, it was more go through the motions. We have players that can’t or won’t touch their toes.

The first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem. I see no evidence that anyone associated with the basketball program really gets that. Like I said a few days ago, maybe losing out and having no post-season will finally hammer the message home.

packbackr04.. Sid put his eggs all into one PG basket and lost that recruit which forced him to plan B: Javi, Farnold, Marques, which we can all agree none are elite PG’s you need to play competitive in the ACC. I had some Tar Hole tell me today that there’s no use wanting to be like the Dook’s/UNC’s.. We’ll never get there and we’ll never be competitive, no matter what we do. I hope we can prove everyone wrong in a few years.

Interesting things from the blog lately:

Sidney and his staff of multimillionaire basketball coaches don’t know how to coach:

    boxing out
    picks and rolls
    anything basketball related pretty much
    or recruit

They also don’t know how to:

    motivate
    can’t see our weaknesses
    discipline players
    and almost any other intangible

    but we all supposedly do.

btw, i get no greater delight than someone telling me what fundamentals they were taught in high school or middle school and then surmising that they are not being taught. We all see that they are not performed; doesn’t mean they aren’t taught.

And lastly…in Sidney’s teleconference some of which can be found on the WRAL website transcribed, he said (paraphrasing): I’d like to run but the team we have can’t run, they don’t make good decisions on the break.

And unless you guys are watching a different team than I am…i have not seen us successfully run a 4 on 3, 3 on 2, or 2 on 1 break in a long time. I’ve seen GG or CF run out after a steal or block and get a nice dunk, but not a textbook break. So here is Sid admitting and facing up like some have dreamed: “i wish Sidney would pull a TOB and just say we stink”. Well he has.

Also, the drop-off in McCauley and Costner’s play is well documented, but I’m almost more baffled and disheartened by the regression of Dennis Horner.

Watch Hickson as well and say to yourself where does this 6′9 body play on any pro team?? He is a small forward in the nba…there are frosh on each acc team right now whom I would take over him in a minute.

Blackdom, Hickson’s having a good year so far. If he had a good PG to complement him, he’d be doing even better. Sheyer at Duke might be ahead of him, but it’s hard to say, since Sheyer has a more talented team around him.

Hickson’s too small to be a C in the NBA, but at 6’9″ and 240 lbs. he can be a PF. Give him some time to add some more muscle, because he’s the skinniest 6’9″, 240 lb. kid I’ve seen.

What has me worried about future is the fact we are losing Grant and adding Mays and Williams, who are not billed as program changing impact freshman next year.

Our 2009-2010 season roster will be: Seniors – Ferguson, Johnson, Degand, Horner and Costner; Juniors – Smith, Hickson, and Gonzalez; Sophomores – Thomas, Mays and Williams; Freshman – Woods, [open sholly].

Basically we won’t be a running team, unless Lowe runs some guys out of the program, since we only have one open scholarship for 2009 or Hickson goes pro, to open up another scholly.

The 2010 recruiting class will be five deep and could be one of those classes that transform a program. Though the 2010-2011 team will still be young, so don’t expect miracles overnight with that team.

Our future is going to depend a lot on player development. The juries still out on Lowe’s ability to develop talent. Hopefully some of the younger players start playing better next year and the year after or else Lowe won’t last long enough to pull in a blockbuster 2010 class.

thanks for painting the future picture Billy and I’ll be curious to see who leaves after this year. I hope Sid runs off the dead weight and free’s up some spots. as for developing talent, it’s Sid and his assistants and currently, none of them haven’t done that with the inability to throw a damn crisp pass or f’n rebound.

  6. packgrad93 02/26/2008 at 1:57 PM #

“since we only have one open scholarship for 2009 or Hickson goes pro, to open up another scholly.”

Fells & Ben will open up 2 schollys + JJ’s. Wood, Wall or Brown, Kelly or Favors.

  7. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 1:58 PM #

so what yer telling me is that Chris Wright single handedly F0cked the NCSU basketball program for the next 4 yrs?

So Sid missed on wright, He should have held the scholly for a suitable PG. one that is a program changer for the 08 or 09 class. Would we be that much worse without Javi this yr?

  8. Trip 02/26/2008 at 1:59 PM #

I hate the moderation thing on here, by the time my post is moderated it’s so far from the bottom no one reads it =P

  9. Noah 02/26/2008 at 2:04 PM #

Three more years of Sidney Lowe. I wonder…would we be lower at that point than we were after seven of Les Robinson? I think we would.

    We’ll see…apparently.

  10. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 2:06 PM #

are their no PG’s interested in playing in the acc at NC State next yr? are there any top 100 pg’s left for next yr?

  11. Sweet jumper 02/26/2008 at 2:11 PM #

packbackr04–One signed with Indiana who might become free since Sampson has left as I mentioned on another thread. His name is Holloway, and he was interested in UVa before signing with Indiana. He is ranked 100 per the Fayetteville Observer.

  12. nycfan 02/26/2008 at 2:18 PM #

^The 2008 class is pretty well closed out; you might be able to pick off guys from schools that are losing their head coach, I guess, except that State doesn’t have a scholarship to give at present, and 4 PGs/Combo guards on the roster for next year, so you don’t really have guarantied playing time, either.

I actually think that Sid and Towe closed out their own 2008 recruiting class as early as possible (with Mays and the kid from NC, sorry, I forgot his name) in part b/c they knew they were already behind the 8-ball in terms of building relationships with that class, so they chose to take the first available commits there and focus on (a) Hickson for ’07 and (b) building interest with the ’09 class.

There is the Tinsley kid out in Oregon, but he is more of a shooting guard and has high major programs swarming all over him already as the last viable guard in the class.

Fells & Ben will open up 2 schollys + JJ’s. Wood, Wall or Brown, Kelly or Favors.

We have two scholarships, total, if things stand as they are – Fells and Ben. One scholarship is given to Wood, who has verballed already. This leaves one open scholarship. Someone could transfer and / or Hickson goes pro, freeing up additional scholarships.

I basically outlined what personnel we’ll have as things stand, assuming no one goes pro or transfers. If it happens, we’ll have more scholarships for 2009.

Other than Hickson going pro, I don’t know who’ll want to transfer, because if they do transfer, it would have to be after this year, since some of the guys would be seniors when the 2009-2010 season starts. Don’t know if Johnson or Degand or Ferguson or Costner want to sit for another year by transfering. Fells and McCauley will be seniors, so it makes no sense for them to leave after this year. Gonzalez will get playing time next year, so I don’t see him transfering. Thomas will be coming back from an injury, so I don’t see anybody having an interest in him, if he decides to transfer. I think Smith will be a good player, so I don’t want him to transfer.

Only thing that might happen are a couple of redshirted players – like Ferguson or Costner – might graduate in four years, though they’ll still have some eligibility left, since they redshirted and can then go and play for another program, without sitting out a year.

Who knows what’s going to happen, but I don’t expect any blockbuster recruiting class coming in until year 5 for Sid.

“Aside from the unproven and fairly unheralded group of guards we’ll be counting on next year, there is also a real leadership vacuum. We miss that aspect of Engin Atsur more than anything else.”

McCauley shoul’ve been the guy for this. We saw flashes of this again when JJ came out in the second half against UVA. I don’t understand why he can’t do this as well from the PF spot, but it seems he can’t…

  15. Wait_Til_This_Year 02/26/2008 at 2:29 PM #

    Oops, I meant “should’ve.”

  16. packgrad93 02/26/2008 at 2:31 PM #

Wall, Wood, & Favors would be a blockbuster class.

  17. BJD95 02/26/2008 at 2:37 PM #

Ferguson is already very close to graduating. I doubt he sticks around for 2009-10. This team has been so dysfunctional, I can’t imagine that nobody jumps ship.

I don’t think we offer Wood this early without feeling pretty good about scholarships opening up.

  18. choppack1 02/26/2008 at 2:41 PM #

Just thinking out loud here – Sid “inherited” the following:
    Atsur (gone)
    Grant
    Fells
    McCauley
    Costner
    Horner
    Ferguson (6 players)

    Here’s there current scholarship allocation:
    Big Lew (scholy gone)
    Degand
    MJ
    Hickson
    Tracy Smith
    Javi
    Johnny Thomas
    Julius Mayes(next year)
    CJ Williams(next year)
    Scott Woods (2009)
    CJ Leslie (2010)

For a guys who praised the play of Memphis and UT, I’ve got to wonder about the allocation of a couple of these scolies. Also, alot of these guys have glaring shortcomings in their games. I know we’re predisposed to disliking “interchangable parts” – but I’d tell you that Duke, Memphis and UT have a lot of them. Most guys on your roster should be able to play at least 2 positions – but you’re better off if they can play 3 (like Gavin could if pushed.)

Sid’s allocation isn’t horrible, but thus far, his misses have been huge. The bad news is that w/ 3 transfers on the roster – Degand, Ferg and MJ – you’ve probably got 3 kids who aren’t likely to go anywhere unless the opt for D2 ball. One thing everyone could agree on about Herb – he could run kids out of the program like nobody’s business. Looks like Sid may have to do the same thing.

  19. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 2:50 PM #

bjd^^ i know its no good for you to mention any names, but is it safe for me to assume you have heard some things about schollies opening up?

  20. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 2:52 PM #

    prematurely that is^^

  21. BJD95 02/26/2008 at 2:56 PM #

04 – nothing concrete, but I’ve seen it inferred enough that I’m fairly comfortable expecting it.

  22. pakfanistan 02/26/2008 at 3:03 PM #

    His misses have been huge?

The only “huge” miss in his allocation so far has been Johnson.

  23. blackdom 02/26/2008 at 3:06 PM #

Sorry no sir ……..I would take any of Dukes young Frosh that play than Hickson 6’9 power forward in the nba? dream on he would be eaten alive ,shoot he is now

  24. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 3:21 PM #

BJD^ well as much as it hurts to see a kid leave the program. it seems like the best thing right now. i have no ill will towards any of them, but its clear that we have players on the team that have no business in the ACC. and some taht have the talent but not the desire to be in the ACC.

well, Assuming one or two players are leaving. i will continue with the… WE NEED A FREAGIN PG FOR NEXT YR! RANT AND HOPE THAT SID REALIZES TAHT HE NEEDS TO GO OUT AND GET ONE, NOW because noone who is on the team now is capable of leading the team where it needs to be. i would also think it might entice JJ to stay next yr if you can tell him… “look, we are bringing in this guy at point, he can help you showcase your abilities. stay one more yr!”

and he can also tell the PG, that he can play with a future NBA player in hickson…

  25. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 3:29 PM #

and if i was JJ, id be all over coach lowe to get him some frickin help or tell him youre gone
