Denial Runs Deep at NC State

I didn’t expect to get even madder when I read the sports page this morning. But then I read these quotes from Ben McCauley:

“It may seem like it but we’re still trying to [win],” junior forward Ben McCauley said. “We’re definitely trying to.

“I don’t think we’ve forgotten how to win [but] I think we’re kind of one step behind. We’re almost there.”

Almost there? Are you fucking kidding me? The last place team, the team who was winless against non-Boston College ACC foes, was beating you by 27 early in the second half. Maybe there’s a new meaning for “almost” that I just haven’t heard of yet.

How do we get out of this mess? Pretty simple, says Big Ben:

“We have to win these last three games and do very well in the ACC Tournament,” McCauley said. “If not win it, get to the finals and hope for the best. But we can’t think about the ACC Tournament right now. We got to win these last three games.”

How about a manageable goal – like showing up ready and fucking willing to play hard for a full 40 minutes. Just once. Then talk about how motivated everyone will be in the offseason to work hard, get in shape, and make sure they never have to suffer such humiliation ever again. Forget the NCAAT, NC State is on the outside of the NIT bubble right now. There’s nobody on the NCAAT selection committee even thinking about NC State.

This team and this coach continue to act like there are no major, systemic problems with the lousy product they are putting on the court. Like there is some magic switch that will flip, and NC State will get “hot” just like every opponent magically seems to do against NC State.

Here’s a hint – they are outworking you. It started with offseason workouts and fall practice, and continued through yesterday’s shoot-around. From the game recap thread, here’s what SFN commenter WolftownVA81 saw yesterday:

Being at the game today, I’ll offer my few observations. We got there when the doors openned 1-1/2 hours before game time so we got to see the shoot arounds, warmups and stretches. We had good seats on row A at the 300 level just behind the NCSU basket so we had a good view.

1. Our guys were not taking the shoot around serious. They were laughing and having a good time while most of their shots bricked.

2. The UVA players were all business and were making most of their shots. At one point my wife commented UVA had made 10 or 12 in a row from the 3 pt. line and we’re going get killed today.

3. When stretch time came, it was more go through the motions. We have players that can’t or won’t touch their toes.

The first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem. I see no evidence that anyone associated with the basketball program really gets that. Like I said a few days ago, maybe losing out and having no post-season will finally hammer the message home.

oh and if we are going to run a half court O, put our bigs down low and pound away. Besides UNC, what other team has 3 big guys that can play down low??? Hell it can’t get any worse..

Oh for the stats guru’s out there, can someone tell me how many times UNC has made it past the sweeet 16 since 2000 besides the 2005 run? Have a UNC fan I need to correct.

I would like to see an effort in these last few games……..Watch Hickson as well and say to yourself where does this 6’9 body play on any pro team?? He is a small forward in the nba………please you all we gots to wake up . We were promised and believed he was the future, there are frosh on each acc team right now whom I would take over him in a minute.

“We can’t run. We don’t make good decisions on the break”

BJD said it but to reinforce. Both Fells and Grant can do one thing and that is drive to the goal. If that is shut down then they throw it away, get blocked or charge.
It comes back to basketball IQ. We have little to none.

  4. blackdom 02/26/2008 at 11:36 AM #

Zero BBall IQ from the bench to the floor. I agree what does it take to have a hand up on shots and not to leave your feet!

To reinforce what I said 10 days ago, this season is lost. There’s no real way to fix it. A new style of play is going to depend heavily on Degand’s return (the X factor as to whether there is hope for next year or not) and Mays’ readiness to play. Perhaps CJ can also log a few minutes so we have 4 quasi-legitimate ACC guards and Fells can stand around as a SF, which is much less harmful to the offense than standing around as a SG.

  6. Rick 02/26/2008 at 11:53 AM #

“Fells can stand around as a SF, which is much less harmful to the offense than standing around as a SG.”

Fells is someone I just do not understand. He has every skill necessary to dominate games. shooting, length, hops, quickness, etc
He is like the tin man. All he needs is a brain.

Sid was qouted as saying the players aren’t geting the offense. My question is: How long does it take to learn? If it’s that complicated, make some changes. If the players are confused & frustrated they won’t put forth 100% effort. If current players aren’t buying into the system & frustrated with Sid future recruits will see that & that will kill our future.

  8. Ed89 02/26/2008 at 12:24 PM #

Well, since the season is all but lost, the only thing left to discuss is next year and beyond. Therefore, what’s the latest recruiting scoop. We NEED a couple of good players in ’09. One of which has to be a PF/C (Hickson and McCauley will be gone). I know Lowe wants Wall, not sure if Wall knows what he wants — he’s heading to Oregon for an official visit. Oregon??? I can see Kentucky or Florida or Texas, but Oregon???? I mean if you’re from Oregon, okay, but to leave N.C. to play hoops in Oregon?? That might be a first.

  9. packgrad93 02/26/2008 at 12:33 PM #

    Javi, Marques, Mayes
    Degand, Fergie, CJ Williams
    Fells, Thomas, Horner
    Ben, Costner, Smith
    JJ

3 of our best players are stuck at the 4 spot

This is a great point and goes along with the one made earlier about Lowe reaching his crisis point in year three as opposed to year six with the previous coach. This is about the only good thing I can think of considering our current quandary. I think Lowe should bite the bullet and go ahead and go to the faster pace next year and hope DeGand & others can make it work well enough to give us hope. It will still come down to the 2009 class but let’s go ahead and get started if this is the style he wants to play. Don’t forget about Johnny Thomas. With him & Fells at the SF, if nothing else, we should be able to defend better than air.

  11. blackdom 02/26/2008 at 12:52 PM #

It is taking the players too long to learn the offense? Watch this offense it always starts on the right wing we look to jj on the low block 4 other guys stand like a picket fence around the 3 point line!!
Our out of bounds play under our basket where a good cyo team usually gets points or at least some foul shots, consists of what an elementary schools teams uses as its last option sending your point guard down the other end of the floor as a safety!
5 more years Yes! And while we are at it lets give busch and cheney a few more years too so they can have more time to F things up as well.

  12. choppack1 02/26/2008 at 12:55 PM #

“Guys like Doh and Lowe seem like they would rather lose a close game than suffer the inconsistencies of a free-wheeling style.”

Funny that this style isn’t exactly resulting in close losses – but blowouts.

Nycfan – I’m w/ you. Lowe’s comments about running have me more worried than ever. This year, when Javi’s led the break, we’ve been OK. We’ve been OK in transition. I’d really like to see the breakdown of how we’ve done on the fastbreak. As bad as our fastbreak is – and if it’s the wrong guys hands, it’s brutal – our halfcourt offense is just as brutal.

What’s the purpose of having depth if you don’t use it? Have your guys play balls-out for 40 minutes and see what’s left in the aftermath.

  13. Ed89 02/26/2008 at 12:58 PM #

    Packgrad,
Was that next year’s line-up? If so, I don’t see JJ here. Could happen. The following year is the one where we really need the PF/C. Smith and Costner will be here, but can either guard a big PF or true C? Can you see Smith or Costner trying to guard Thabeet or Hibbert? We may as well hand the ball to the other team at the opening tip-off. 🙂

  14. Ed89 02/26/2008 at 1:02 PM #

^^5 more years Yes! And while we are at it lets give busch and cheney a few more years too so they can have more time to F things up as well.

Have to admit, although I think Sid gets 2-3 more years, that was pretty funny…

“And while we are at it lets give busch and cheney a few more years too so they can have more time to F things up as well.”

    whom would you suggest?

“He is like the tin man. All he needs is a brain.”

hope future recruits read this 🙁

  17. ktoh 02/26/2008 at 1:05 PM #

Ed89 …………Why 2 or 3 more years? Take a look at St.Johns program ,they keep adding years as well.

  18. packgrad93 02/26/2008 at 1:13 PM #

Sid isn’t going anywhere for at least 3 years.

  19. Sweet jumper 02/26/2008 at 1:16 PM #

The tin man needed a heart, and the scarecrow needed a brain. They both apply to multiple players on this team.

  20. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 1:20 PM #

im still waiting on apology from Sid and jed. we NEED a PG!!!!!!! why Sid doesnt see this i dont know, but he needs to go out and get 1 FOR NEXT YR RIGHT NOW! Degand is NOT and i repeat NOT the answer. where is shootingguard. I would love to hear what he has to say about whats going on… SFN mods, do you guys know when the last time he posted was?

  21. Ismael 02/26/2008 at 1:41 PM #

any of you guy listen to the coach’s show? What is the general mood of the fans who call in, what are the answers like? I realize its all gonna be coach-speak and putting the best face forward, but sometimes something can be gleaned.

  22. packgrad93 02/26/2008 at 1:42 PM #

“why Sid doesnt see this i dont know, but he needs to go out and get 1 FOR NEXT YR RIGHT NOW!”

Javi, Degand, Marques & Mayes. our PG’s for next season.

Here’s what Hickson’s decision will come down to. He will probably get picked up late first round/early second. If he likes what he sees here, he’ll stay one more year to develop. If he thinks that we’re falling off the cliff, he’ll bolt for the NBA while he still can.

Javi – 1/2 – If he puts on 15 pounds of muscle in the off season and doesn’t lose any quickness, i’ll be pretty excited.
Degand – 1/2 – Best wishes for a quick recovery
Mays – 1/2 – It sounds like he’ll be one of the few on our team with BB IQ.
Ferguson – 2 – 3 point specialist… no one lets it fly like Ferguson. Wish he’d make a few more though.
    Johnson – 2/3 – I’d much rather him be a 3 with that jumpshot.
Fells – 2/3 – Probably better at the 3 as far as being a team.
Thomas – 2/3 – Have I mentioned how much I like this kid?
    Horner – 3 – Too slow for a 2.
    Williams – 3? – Not sure.
Harris – 3 – Although he seems to have the ability to defend damn near anyone on the court with his unusually quick speed for someone of his size. I still say we send him in with orders of “KILL MAIM DESTROY”
Smith – 3/4 – I really like this kid too. Quiet, not too upbeat, but he plays hard.
    Costner – 4 – Too slow for a 3.
    Mccauley -4/5
    Hickson -4/5

We’re fairly well spread out at every spot next year, with a ton of people that could play the 3.

  24. packbackr04 02/26/2008 at 1:47 PM #

and not one of them is any good as far as i can tell (with the exception of Mayes who will be a true frosh, so i hesitate to judge him)
but RUN one of them OFF! Hell Run two of the OFF… wake did it, Georgetown is always offering more schollys than they have. lots of schools have defections. is it that hard for sid to tell one of the kids that it may be best for both parties to start looking in other directions.. im looking at you Marques! I hear Bill and Mary is in need of a slow, poor ball handling, poor shooting PG

  25. BJD95 02/26/2008 at 1:49 PM #

One thing (and maybe only one thing) is certain – if Degand and Thomas can’t recover fully from their injuries (and both rely heavily on their athleticism rather than technical skill), then we are supremely fucked. We can’t carry any more “non-performing” scholarship slots.

It sure would be nice for Thomas to be able to push Fells for minutes next year. Courtney Fells is certainly not the kind of guy you want feeling comfortable about his starting role.

Aside from the unproven and fairly unheralded group of guards we’ll be counting on next year, there is also a real leadership vacuum. We miss that aspect of Engin Atsur more than anything else.
