Denial Runs Deep at NC State

I didn’t expect to get even madder when I read the sports page this morning. But then I read these quotes from Ben McCauley:

“It may seem like it but we’re still trying to [win],” junior forward Ben McCauley said. “We’re definitely trying to.

“I don’t think we’ve forgotten how to win [but] I think we’re kind of one step behind. We’re almost there.”

Almost there? Are you fucking kidding me? The last place team, the team who was winless against non-Boston College ACC foes, was beating you by 27 early in the second half. Maybe there’s a new meaning for “almost” that I just haven’t heard of yet.

How do we get out of this mess? Pretty simple, says Big Ben:

“We have to win these last three games and do very well in the ACC Tournament,” McCauley said. “If not win it, get to the finals and hope for the best. But we can’t think about the ACC Tournament right now. We got to win these last three games.”

How about a manageable goal – like showing up ready and fucking willing to play hard for a full 40 minutes. Just once. Then talk about how motivated everyone will be in the offseason to work hard, get in shape, and make sure they never have to suffer such humiliation ever again. Forget the NCAAT, NC State is on the outside of the NIT bubble right now. There’s nobody on the NCAAT selection committee even thinking about NC State.

This team and this coach continue to act like there are no major, systemic problems with the lousy product they are putting on the court. Like there is some magic switch that will flip, and NC State will get “hot” just like every opponent magically seems to do against NC State.

Here’s a hint – they are outworking you. It started with offseason workouts and fall practice, and continued through yesterday’s shoot-around. From the game recap thread, here’s what SFN commenter WolftownVA81 saw yesterday:

Being at the game today, I’ll offer my few observations. We got there when the doors openned 1-1/2 hours before game time so we got to see the shoot arounds, warmups and stretches. We had good seats on row A at the 300 level just behind the NCSU basket so we had a good view.

1. Our guys were not taking the shoot around serious. They were laughing and having a good time while most of their shots bricked.

2. The UVA players were all business and were making most of their shots. At one point my wife commented UVA had made 10 or 12 in a row from the 3 pt. line and we’re going get killed today.

3. When stretch time came, it was more go through the motions. We have players that can’t or won’t touch their toes.

The first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem. I see no evidence that anyone associated with the basketball program really gets that. Like I said a few days ago, maybe losing out and having no post-season will finally hammer the message home.

wolfpackpassion- trust me… EVERYONE is complaining about your posts. well informed, but impossible to read. Is English your first language or do you use a phone to post?! that honestly what me and I am sure many others are wondering.

  2. packpigskinfan23 02/25/2008 at 11:04 PM #

whatever you want to believe man… I just wish it was easier to read your damn posts. I have read at least 5 others say the same thing. I guess I will just ignore them from now on.

“But I’m changing all that now, I have decided that I have immediate expectations afterall. Lowe gets the rest of this season and the next, to prove that he hasn’t been totally tainted by the NBA and that he still knows what NC STATE ONCE WAS and STILL means to it’s fans!!!”

    Interesting…interesting.

On another note, does Wolfpackpassion understand there’s an auto-wrap thing for text? Or is he posting via his/her cellphone?

I have been guilty of the “all undercase” posts as well … my apologies

I’ll try to not be so lazy on my typing / formatting from now on 🙁

It’s cliche, but what the hell…

    Wait Till Next Year.

Why are we bashing our heads over this team now? I said it after the loss against UNC, we just simply are not that good this year but the bright spots so far involve Sidney’s recruits. Smith/Hickson/Javi. Javi might not be the most talented person out there, but you can’t tell me that he’s not giving 110% everytime. We simply sipped wayy too much kool aid.

You all are screaming that all you want is EFFORT. Well, hell, you’re getting it from the new recruits! Now, the real thing to find out is if this carrys over to next year which these same new recruits, which is why it is IMPERATIVE to give this coaching staff atleast one more year. Talk about firing Sid now is ridiculous, even Doh’erty lasted 3 years at UNC.

I’m thinking that once next year rolls around and Fells/Costner suddenly realize that if they don’t play their best all the time that they will lose all of their time to the new people is when our team will start clicking.

And hey, if by this time next year we’re still sitting pretty at 4-9 in the ACC then I’ll gladly start cranking up the Fire Sidney bandwagon. But the least that we can do is give him one more year.

  10. Trip 02/26/2008 at 3:10 AM #

Also, to add to that… Hickson will be here next year. He hasn’t competed, let alone dominated enough to be picked up in the first round. Scouts are salivating over Beasley too much.

  11. mafpack 02/26/2008 at 7:56 AM #

Sorry about that SFN, didn’t mean to bring up the bad memories. Guess I was just trying to “Close the Book” yet again; I think I’ll let that job fall on you guys from now on.

SFN: We phrased awkwardly – YOUR post wasn’t offending. We deleted the offending post that you responded to. No reason to keep the response once other post deleted.

Trip, I’m with ya man. As much as I hate to see a lack of effort, or atleast the apperance of such, we all said we’d give Sid atleast 3 to 4 years to get his program setup and running – I say we honor that commitment and continue to support him and this team.

As a further thought in this vein, what recruit will want to join our family if we turn this quickly (and yes, half a season is VERY quick in the world of NCAA basketball) on our own players/coaches. Support the school, even if you don’t support this particular program.

    That is all 🙂

^Agreed Beasley will go ahead of Hickson, but the first round is more than two players. Hodge and Simmons went in the first round and Hickson is a better NBA prospect than they were. I have no inside scoop to say he’s going, but I wouldn’t assume that just because he hasn’t dominated every game that he’s coming back either. If I had to place my dollar down for a bet, I’d put it on Hickson to the NBA this June.

thank your diety of choice that i have my graduate school alma mater – georgetown university – to pull for in hoops. i’m done withe pack.

  14. choppack1 02/26/2008 at 8:23 AM #

Trip – You’re right. But Sid doesn’t play much Smith much and we saw what Costner, McCauley and Horner did w/ the extra year of tutelage. Not exactly encouraging.

Redfred – I’m w/ you on Sid’s excuse for not running. Good gosh, we routinely play 8-10 players. As I said in an earlier post, if you want to run, put Grant at the 4, Fells at the 3, Ferg (or Simon or MJ) at the 2, Javi at the one…It’s that f’ing simple. I guarantee you, that team could push it – and you know what, they might even handle the ball better, defend better and rebound better.

Interesting quote from Lowe in the WS Journal:

“I have said it before and I guess I’m going to have to stand up every time, but we’re not a running team,” Lowe said. “We can’t run. We don’t make good decisions on the break, so with that we don’t give ourselves an opportunity. We need to pull it back and execute our stuff and take advantage of matchups and situations, which I felt we did in the second half.

“That’s what we have to do. That’s been my message. But sometimes I cannot stand up quick enough to whistle and tell them to slow it down because it is too late and they have already turned it over.”

Slow it down????????How much slower can you go? This team actually looks better when they run the ball a little. Looks like were in for another slow offense. Same style…different coach? (not exactly the same of course) Let them open it up a little because the slow stuff doesn’t seem to be working right now either.

We have a lot of problems…..

If there’s a lack of heart under Herb’s players, then why did it not show until this year?

That said I do think Hickson (minus defensive lapses, which may be due to frustrating), Gonzalez, and Smith are showing good effort- and Grant usually does as well.

I do see a chance to turn things around in a couple of years, but not next year- but honestly, it’s remote. I usually say never boo the kids, but it’s appropiate to boo right now.

  17. RAWFS 02/26/2008 at 8:40 AM #

Agreed Beasley will go ahead of Hickson, but the first round is more than two players.

The only Hickson draft mention I found in a cursory search yesterday was ESPN:

Where do the NBA draft gurus place JJ Hickson?

  18. Noah 02/26/2008 at 9:03 AM #

I can’t remember where I saw it, but I read recently that the NBA scouts have Hickson going somewhere around 16th.

Last night on 850, several people were calling in and saying Hickson wasn’t ready. Well…duh. When does being “ready” have anything to do with going pro?

And for everyone who thinks he has holes in his game — that’s WHY you go pro early. You want to avoid getting exposed like Terrance Morris or T. Hansborough.

  19. Ed89 02/26/2008 at 9:23 AM #

Hickson and Beasley are in a different league. Kinda like comparing Durant to Joakim Noah. Both 1st rounders, but you get the point.

If you’re not good at running, practice it…it’s that simple. Practice what your NOT good at. You shouldn’t whistle at your players during a fastbreak. Hell, let ’em screw up, then correct them. If they screw up again, take them out, but don’t yell during a fastbreak.

I will agree with one thing though, and that is if GG is on a break, he better take it all the way to the basket, because otherwise it’s probably a turnover. If he passes he throws it at their feet or into the stands, if he gets a pass he usually drops it. Again, practice, practice, practice, run, run, run, free throws, free throws, more sprints, puke and get back on the court….

The reason we can’t/don’t run is that there is no secondary ballhandler. And we only have one guy who’s capable as a primary ballhandler, and even he’s not that good (Javi).

I buy seats to a handful of games from a guy with great seats for watching the “big picture” (front row, center court of upper deck). Every time I’ve seen us try to push tempo, we look AWFUL. I think it’s the difference between 15-20 TOs per game and 30-40. Grant can’t dribble or make good decisions in transition (and his passing has regressed). Fells can’t pass or catch the ball. MJ can’t do anything on offense. Ferguson is slow and unathletic. That’s all the guards we’ve got.

This year is all about playing out the string. Maybe we’ll look different next year. Our guards will still be weak, though.

The only really puzzling personnel decision to me is why Tracy Smith doesn’t play more. He seems to work hard on the glass and offensively. Sure, his defense is wretched, but who’s isn’t on this team?

what I’d do for tomorrow night is start Hickson, Ben, and Costner for the front line and Grant/Javi in the back. Pound the ball inside and see what happens. Tell Costner to get his ass down low. what do we have to lose?

  23. Mike 02/26/2008 at 11:04 AM #

Why dont some people learn? Why dont some people listen?

I have gotten to the point where I skip over hard to read posts and certain other names. It’s amazing to me the number of people who continue to bring up HWSNBN in spite of numerous edits by the writers here. Do you think your post will make it past when all the others get deleted?

This used to be a great place to read and exchange ideas, get inside information, and try to help our teams. I have been here probably for 4 years (maybe more) and it is getting more and more hits, but I wonder about some of these people. I look forward to the intelligent insight and discussion by provided by many but if some if you are NC State grads I am truly embarrassed.

I appreciate SFN and RAWFS sites. SFN is consistently one of the top rated blogs across the country – let’s please keep it that way. Childish rants, profane language, and people who just dont get it harm this site and directly also affect the NC State University.

State makes a ton of mistakes in the half-court, too. To me, if you want to run, you install it now and take your lumps so that you aren’t teaching something that you don’t prefer for years and aren’t starting cold with an entire squad when you finally do have the personnel to run — you are just folding in the new components with a team that already has experience in that style.

Plus, frankly, I think State would do better in a more frenetic pace — you’ve got the depth, you’ve got athletic guys who can pull-off the energizing plays. Yes, State would have more turnovers but your opponents probably would too — 14-15 TOs in a 60 point game is a lot worse to me than 20 TOs in an 80 point game. The mistakes are magnified rather than just moving on.

Now, if you want to build your offense around pounding it in to Hickson in a clear-out, yeah, running doesn’t really work. But I think there are ways to use Hickson in an up-tempo style.

You guys don’t want to hear this, but Lowe is really reminding me of Doherty right now. Not that Lowe is a sociopath, but in trying to micromanage the game, preferring to slow it down, having his players constantly looking over their shoulders for direction rather than letting them play. Guys like Doh and Lowe seem like they would rather lose a close game than suffer the inconsistencies of a free-wheeling style, but the unnaturally constrained offense has a direct, negative impact on the energy of the players overall, IMO, and can result in shortened attention spans and lethargic defense.

Both guys seem to want to play conservative, risk-free defense that slows the game and doesn’t give up wide-open lay-ups but that also relies on the other team to make a mistake — sort of the Tracy Austin baseline lob defense, if you just keep hitting it back, maybe they’ll get frustrated and hit it too hard. More often than not, I think the team playing that defense gets frustrated — they have no easy scoring opportunities, they are playing a grinding mental defense that does not offer the opportunity to make a big play, just demands that you not make a mistake.

  25. boonami 02/26/2008 at 11:10 AM #

nycfan.. I also think Lowe is still stuck in NBA mode that he has to be buddies with these guys and not the my way or highway approach. It’s a learning curve to coaching the college game/players and the jury is still out if he can do that.
