Denial Runs Deep at NC State

I didn’t expect to get even madder when I read the sports page this morning. But then I read these quotes from Ben McCauley:

“It may seem like it but we’re still trying to [win],” junior forward Ben McCauley said. “We’re definitely trying to.

“I don’t think we’ve forgotten how to win [but] I think we’re kind of one step behind. We’re almost there.”

Almost there? Are you fucking kidding me? The last place team, the team who was winless against non-Boston College ACC foes, was beating you by 27 early in the second half. Maybe there’s a new meaning for “almost” that I just haven’t heard of yet.

How do we get out of this mess? Pretty simple, says Big Ben:

“We have to win these last three games and do very well in the ACC Tournament,” McCauley said. “If not win it, get to the finals and hope for the best. But we can’t think about the ACC Tournament right now. We got to win these last three games.”

How about a manageable goal – like showing up ready and fucking willing to play hard for a full 40 minutes. Just once. Then talk about how motivated everyone will be in the offseason to work hard, get in shape, and make sure they never have to suffer such humiliation ever again. Forget the NCAAT, NC State is on the outside of the NIT bubble right now. There’s nobody on the NCAAT selection committee even thinking about NC State.

This team and this coach continue to act like there are no major, systemic problems with the lousy product they are putting on the court. Like there is some magic switch that will flip, and NC State will get “hot” just like every opponent magically seems to do against NC State.

Here’s a hint – they are outworking you. It started with offseason workouts and fall practice, and continued through yesterday’s shoot-around. From the game recap thread, here’s what SFN commenter WolftownVA81 saw yesterday:

Being at the game today, I’ll offer my few observations. We got there when the doors openned 1-1/2 hours before game time so we got to see the shoot arounds, warmups and stretches. We had good seats on row A at the 300 level just behind the NCSU basket so we had a good view.

1. Our guys were not taking the shoot around serious. They were laughing and having a good time while most of their shots bricked.

2. The UVA players were all business and were making most of their shots. At one point my wife commented UVA had made 10 or 12 in a row from the 3 pt. line and we’re going get killed today.

3. When stretch time came, it was more go through the motions. We have players that can’t or won’t touch their toes.

The first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem. I see no evidence that anyone associated with the basketball program really gets that. Like I said a few days ago, maybe losing out and having no post-season will finally hammer the message home.

I mean, if you say you want run in the future, you have a young team with only one senior, and you’re getting your ass kicked up one side and down the other at every turn anyway, what is the freaking hold up? More losses? I think all already well prepared for those.

Are you going to expect that these returning players will just all of sudden know how to play up tempo after all that you’ve asked them to do previously was slow and walk from one of the court to the other.

The wolfpack nation must accept the following facts:

    1. We have a chancellor who doesn’t care about athletics. He is not going anywhere anytime soon.

    2. We have an athletic director who couldn’t direct the local YMCA much less an ACC school like NCSU which is the largest University in North Carolina. He is not going anywhere any time soon either.

    3. Our entire athletics department is a giant train wreck but we as wolfpack fans cannot do a darn thing about it. See number 1 and 2 above.

Until 1 and 2 are gone we can look forward to a long future of bleak athletic performances across the board. What is the solution, Prozac?

The sequence of events should be— fire Fowler this summer. Get a strong AD. Do what has to be done next year in many sports.

God, I hope Sid all of a sudden turns into a solid coach. What I can’t believe is how Towe can let his go on. I suspect we will have some assistants bail this summer. They see the writing on the wall. and Lee, heck, he let’s his coaches coach, or not coach, for that matter.

packgirl, agree about ferguson on sunday – and in all fairness mccauley (IMHO) did not suck either

like i said in the game thread, mccauley probably had more rebounds sunday than he has had in his entire career at state combined … i’m exaggerating of course, but it was nice to see him actually blocking people out for a change

“We don’t have a team that can run up and down the floor, even though people think we can. We don’t have a fast-breaking team.”
That has to be the biggest, stinkiest, pile of you know what that has come out of a Lowe orriface in quite some time.
Which of these players are better in a half court set than in the open floor? Grant, Fells, T-Rev, Hickson, Smith.
Sid, maybe you should just say no comment from now on in your presser’s. You know what they say, it’s better to remain silent and be thought you are something than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

    Degand’s Stats:
    10 games, 28.6 minutes/game
    FG: 24-51 (47%)
    3PT: 8-16 (50%)
    REB: 32 (3.2pg)
    AST: 29 (2.9pg)
    TO: 19 (1.9pg)
    A/T: 1.5
    PPG: 6.9

Heck, he and JJ were the only two players to show up against Michigan State.

  8. blackdom 02/25/2008 at 8:01 PM #

jj is a stiff we gots to admit it ……….needs a heart transplant ……….also sid should stay home and just let that nasty red sportscoat coach the rest of the year…..newsflash they do not have an offense………hell the don’t have an out of bounds play …………defense all they do is back up ……….how many 3s are you gonna let someone take before you even get a hand up ……..things are bad enough but with javi and jj on d thats 5 on 3 because javi can’t hold anyone,jj just leaves his feet and if by chance the other squad misses he can’t get the o rebound
I played d1 ball big deal………sid has lost control of his squad costner is lost not hurt and yes he is one dimentional and a baby ……..but sid bought the hype and rode jj thus alienating costner and ben ……a big shame he got the job at a later time yes a shame but that was last year if all I hear around here is true about oh give him another 5 yrs and than see where we are at??? this man knew we were losing #14 last year and what did he go out and get ? a project, and 2 guys that could not get a run where they were at………….please that boy horner is lost on the bench play him and all the rest and pray the knicks don’t fire thomas cause they are the only fools who would sign that dog jj

Herb is old news, past tense, who cares. He quit just like this team has quit.

Lets get on with the future. That is what future we have with the inmates running the insane asylum.

We need drastic change at the top and the question is how can we accomplish that?

Earlier I had said that Lowe ‘deserved’ two more seasons for just coming on board when no one else would consider it. I blame that on the salesman more than anything anyway. But I’m changing all that now, I have decided that I have immediate expectations afterall. Lowe gets the rest of this season and the next, to prove that he hasn’t been totally tainted by the NBA and that he still knows what NC STATE ONCE WAS and STILL means to it’s fans!!!

And NO, to anyone who might think it, the guy that was here before him didn’t ever even have a clue about what that means.

  12. cowdog 02/25/2008 at 8:59 PM #

    Oh Boy,
With due respect to BJD95 as a blog starter ,I have to say that your premise is either wrong or completely understood by me. What the hell do you think a 20 yr old kid is gonna say with the pen and pad in his face? ( shows my age ) How ’bout ” I’m on schol here and really don’t want to risk losing it or playin’ time by calling out everyone associated with this years team…but from my own effort included and certain teamies, I can tell you we suck. I don’t understand what our staff is trying to get across to us, because they, like us are a walking contradiction. Just when it seems that we’ve got a little sumpthin’, sumpthin’ rolling we change up and go purple haze. Maybe you guys should direct your questions to the Skip. Or MT over there. Personally, if and believe me a BIG if we are in position to get offensive rebounds, we know that we can run. Why do you think I ran my ass of against Wake to be in the right spot for that winner?”

  13. cowdog 02/25/2008 at 9:10 PM #

” Fellas I meant defensive rebounds, my alter ego ain’t to sharp on the keyboards. But that’s what I’m tryin to tell you. Why are you interviewing me instead of asking the right question to our staff? “

  14. mafpack 02/25/2008 at 9:25 PM #

I’m sticking with my original statements. Lowe gets a few more years before I pass any kind of judgment, as we all knew this was going to be a very rough transition. I’ve been on teams like this, often there’s not much else a coach can do, even if he knows how, but mail in the season and start over in the off season. At which point, you can crack a few heads and work to ingrain proper thought process/attitude into your team.

One last comment, some of you guys, wolfpackpassion and blackdom specifically from the last few posts I’ve just read – please please please TRY to write in complete and well formed sentences/paragraphs. It seems you guys have pretty good things to say (other than that last rant on HWSNBN) but your lack of formatting and cohesive thought just causes me to see your posts, register “blah blah blah” and move on to the next comment. Just some advice if you actually want readers here to respond to what you take the time to write.

  15. VaWolf82 02/25/2008 at 9:26 PM #

I don’t know how other people parse posts on the internet…but I assume anyone that doesn’t know how to use capital letters or form paragraphs probably doesn’t know enough to say anything worth reading.

Others may plow through some of the posts that violate two of my rules….but I suspect that I am not the only one that just skip over them.

My advice is to make your posts readable….if you really want people to read and discuss the points you raise.

  16. RAWFS 02/25/2008 at 9:39 PM #

Our entire athletics department is a giant train wreck but we as wolfpack fans cannot do a darn thing about it.

There is the tough love of discontinuing financial support, but not many will do it.

I do suspect that it had more to do with Amato’s dismissal than anyone has yet suggested, however. No insider info there, just a gut feel based on the priorities of the managers involved.

  17. cowdog 02/25/2008 at 9:59 PM #

    Sorry Rawfs,

I ( parse) spent so much time as Ben’s alter ego there, that I cannot seem to get the Amato thing.

Again with apologies, the Amato dismissal analogy to what? Discontinued revenue from backers?

Has that happened? Do the Wolfcracker’s books reflect such a thing?

    May you please expound?

  18. Wait_Til_This_Year 02/25/2008 at 10:01 PM #

^^Yeah, RAWFS, but that seems like a double-edged sword. If the department is not making the big bucks, they might not feel comfortable buying out someone’s contract and/or spending a lot on their replacement, be it Fowler or whoever. Personally I don’t feel educated enough to speak on the whole Fowler situation, but I’m just saying that if everyone pulls their monetary support, it could work against what they are trying to accomplish…

  19. turnoffthetv 02/25/2008 at 10:11 PM #

I am personally looking for an apology from SID rather than his excuses. At this point he is running out of excuses with not the first hint of an apology to a nation of passionate fans. Does he feel like he is exempt from a multitude of embarrassing EGGS Laid by a team of young men that he is supposed to be Leading.

Don’t get me wrong I hate ol’Roy and the Holes as bad if not worse than any other State Fan. But Roy will not hesitate to say that he has been BAD Coach from time to time. And most of the time when he claims this his team has fought hard til the end and lost by only a couple of points.(See UMD loss earlier this year). But he blamed himself instead of blaming the shortcomings of his players or the lack of horses(obviously he cant blame that).

Maybe I have missed a post Pack game comment from SID or missed the weekly show but I just cant recall the man Blaming himself for any of these embarrassing effing EGGS.

  20. SMD 02/25/2008 at 10:22 PM #

    turnoffthetv –

That is a GREAT point about Roy (and part of the reason why my venom for him will never reach the level I had for Dean Smith…).

I’ve heard Roy in each of the post-game press conferences after their few losses this year, and he ALWAYS blames himself first, for not getting the team ready.

Now, a certain amount of that has to be spin and showmanship. But the fact that he is even willing to make the gesture speaks volumes about what kind of a coach he is.

  21. redfred2 02/25/2008 at 10:28 PM #

^Roy is…well… But anyway, I said it when ” ” was here that I do admire the way that Roy takes, and answers, straight forward questions, with in depth and straight forward answers. Also I admire the fact that Roy will, and has, come down hard on his players in interviews after they’ve made mistakes that ticked him off.

  22. blackdom 02/25/2008 at 10:30 PM #

sorry fellas you catch my drift, its just the way I roll ….point is you know I am right all you want to do is keep things the way they are………….Oh by the way the league this year has been way way down………….a perfect year for us to be up there instead of whining about the past……the man knew what was needed for us to succeed(forget even succeed I would take compete and if we did I would take the Losses)instead we all talk here about oh well we did not have enough time. Lets wait 4 more years and see if sid can do something. Please tell the truth now would you rather start next year with any other acc team or us?

Javi’s stats past 10 games (per game avg):

Mins Pts RB Ast TO Stl
    26.6 5.4 2.5 3.9 2.4 1.2

Stat-wise he doesn’t look much different than Degand in the 10 games he played – a little lower on PPG and rebounds, higher on assists and steals. But then you have to consider that javi’s last 10 games were all ACC, whereas Degand’s stats were against cupcakes for the most part. It think Javi > Degand right now, but hopefully Degand will improve exponentially when he comes back.
