Denial Runs Deep at NC State

I didn’t expect to get even madder when I read the sports page this morning. But then I read these quotes from Ben McCauley:

“It may seem like it but we’re still trying to [win],” junior forward Ben McCauley said. “We’re definitely trying to.

“I don’t think we’ve forgotten how to win [but] I think we’re kind of one step behind. We’re almost there.”

Almost there? Are you fucking kidding me? The last place team, the team who was winless against non-Boston College ACC foes, was beating you by 27 early in the second half. Maybe there’s a new meaning for “almost” that I just haven’t heard of yet.

How do we get out of this mess? Pretty simple, says Big Ben:

“We have to win these last three games and do very well in the ACC Tournament,” McCauley said. “If not win it, get to the finals and hope for the best. But we can’t think about the ACC Tournament right now. We got to win these last three games.”

How about a manageable goal – like showing up ready and fucking willing to play hard for a full 40 minutes. Just once. Then talk about how motivated everyone will be in the offseason to work hard, get in shape, and make sure they never have to suffer such humiliation ever again. Forget the NCAAT, NC State is on the outside of the NIT bubble right now. There’s nobody on the NCAAT selection committee even thinking about NC State.

This team and this coach continue to act like there are no major, systemic problems with the lousy product they are putting on the court. Like there is some magic switch that will flip, and NC State will get “hot” just like every opponent magically seems to do against NC State.

Here’s a hint – they are outworking you. It started with offseason workouts and fall practice, and continued through yesterday’s shoot-around. From the game recap thread, here’s what SFN commenter WolftownVA81 saw yesterday:

Being at the game today, I’ll offer my few observations. We got there when the doors openned 1-1/2 hours before game time so we got to see the shoot arounds, warmups and stretches. We had good seats on row A at the 300 level just behind the NCSU basket so we had a good view.

1. Our guys were not taking the shoot around serious. They were laughing and having a good time while most of their shots bricked.

2. The UVA players were all business and were making most of their shots. At one point my wife commented UVA had made 10 or 12 in a row from the 3 pt. line and we’re going get killed today.

3. When stretch time came, it was more go through the motions. We have players that can’t or won’t touch their toes.

The first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem. I see no evidence that anyone associated with the basketball program really gets that. Like I said a few days ago, maybe losing out and having no post-season will finally hammer the message home.

Remember…it’s only a fluke accident that kept Bartosz Lewandowski from being on scholarship for three more years.

That counts in the “miss” file.

If I was JJ, and I could get drafted in the mid-first round, I would tell Coach, “Thank you, but I’ve got to take the money. Thank you for your help, and good luck next year.” Sorry, but that’s the truth.

Bartosz coulda been the next Dirk…ya never can tell.

Okay, I did see him in the Red/White game last year, and no, he probably wasn’t the next Dirk.

If you think chemistry wasn’t bad enough with Lowe anointing JJ before the season even started, how do things get if he demands Lowe go out and magically get a better PG, or else? Any coach that would entertain that demand (even if he could do something about it), should just pack up and leave because the chemistry problems that would ensue would make this season look like the good ol’ days.

Ty Lawson at point would have masked some of our problems, but PG is the tip of the iceberg on this team. Fix the other issues and Degand/Javi isn’t going to derail the squad, especially with experience.

“WE NEED A FREAGIN PG FOR NEXT YR! RANT AND HOPE THAT SID REALIZES TAHT HE NEEDS TO GO OUT AND GET ONE, NOW ”

give it up, ’08 is done.

Chemistry and Sr. Leadership is something we don’t have on this team and it’s only amplifying our weaknesses. Great PT or not, if we had great chemistry and Sr. Ldrship in Grant, we’d be a better team. Atsur was the glue last year and with him gone, you can see the results.

    ^ mmmmmm no.

  9. boonami 02/26/2008 at 4:06 PM #

I’d rather lose out than put some JUCO guy on the team. We’re not Maryland.

    I’d take a Steve Francis 🙂

  11. Ed89 02/26/2008 at 4:54 PM #

    I’d take McClinton.

id take anyone who can run an offense, hit an open J, and not get ripped by singletary every time they bring it accross half court

SFN, please allow me one post on this thread. If we get a little too heavy handed in our comments about Fowler, don’t delete them until he’s gone!!!

I’ve been so mad about this continuing mess lately, I haven’t even felt like thinking about it any more without getting sick on my stomach.

^Chop, late reply to your post from way back up the thread. But the up tempo thing, as it relates to intensity on defense at the other end, is a real head scratcher to me. We’ve definitely seen an over controlling philosophy before, and I’d liken both of those situations to having a room full of young children, demanding that they sit down, be quiet and on their best behavior on minute, then telling them to get up, go crazy and scream their heads off the very next minute. The kids don’t don’t know how to act or what is expected of them, they’re either go totally out of control and start screwing up left and right (as in turn overs), or they’re just sit there, lifeless and confused (as in flat and lifeless). It just does not work with children, or as a philosphy on the BB court.

Also, it is not mandatory or necessary to slow down to an absolute crawl, and to just stand around, in order to run an organized and effective offensive set.

I’ve said it many times before Lowe ever arrived in Raleigh, but a team cannot get in any sort rythym when they are expected to STOP, SLOW DOWN, and RE-EVALUATE, on every trip down the court. I do not care what anyone says, playing that way effects the defensive efforts of the players just as much as it does the offensive aspects.

^Noah, you said JJ is looking at somewhere around the 16th pick in the draft. Truly hate to say it, but this is one where I’d probably tell the kid to go ahead and go. There’s still some time but it is fleeting, and if Sidney Lowe doesn’t VERY quickly figure out a way to make that young man’s collegiate BB experience a little more interesting and fulfilling before this season ends, then I don’t think there be too much doubt about JJ Hickson making the leap anyway. Either that, or shelf him, and hope the NBA gets somehow distracted and so overwhelmed with incoming talent that they forget about him. Yeah, that should work.

Didn’t have time to read 238 responses to this thread, but I have just one question relating to the original post.

Would you be happier if Ben had said “The season is over. We can’t win any more games. We’re just playing out the string now.”

I didn’t think so. The simple fact is that there is absolutely nothing Ben or any player or coach could say right now that would make you or me or any State fan happy. But the fact remains that our coaches and players must respond to the media every week until the season is over.

What exactly did you want him to say?

well they at least need to acknowledge the fack that there are problem in the programs and that they need to be adressed. not just the typical, “oh its just not our turn to get hot, we will win…..sometime. nothing needs to be changed about the way we do things. other than loosing, everything is fine”

  17. inhoc... 02/27/2008 at 2:01 PM #

they at least need to cknowledge the fact that there are problems in the program*…forgive my typos.
