2008 NC State Football Schedule

ACC

The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2008 Football Schedule on Friday and the Wolfpack’s slate is included below.

There are no big surprises out there, but there is one extremely interesting subplot. Check out this entry from a couple of weeks ago after Boston College’s football schedule was inappropriately leaked to the press and we said the following:

…the brass at the conference office cannot be happy about the fact that Boston College has leaked their 2008 schedule to the public before the conference’s announcement. We found this link at Boston.com this morning that details the Eagles’ 2008 schedule.

Looks like the ACC is going to play-up the Tom O’Brien angle as much as they can as the conference has scheduled NC State to host Boston College on the last weekend of the year (two days after Thanksgiving). So much for the Chuck Amato-Maryland hatefest. Say hello to BC!

SFN has learned from some Greensboro friends that, as we stated at the time, the ACC was none too happy with the folks in Chestnut Hill when the Eagles’ schedule found its way into the public domain. We were wondering why the ACC’s schedule was not released last week as was the original plan, so when we saw the schedule that was released a week late it didn’t take long to realize what happened. Note the differences between the schedule that ran in the Boston press and the final schedule and you will note a few ‘tweaks’…including NC State’s final game that is now BC’s traditional final game rival, Miami.

The Eagles end the season with a brutal run that begins on October 15th and doesn’t end until their last game of the year at home against Maryland.

That’s right – a home game in Boston in late November two days after Thanksgiving. What do you think expected attendance will be for that one with the students gone? 10,000? How do you think this will help BC’s chances to get to a bowl if they are on the bubble? How do you think Tom O’Brien and NC State will be able to leverage the comparison of support of sold out final game and their attendance on the recruiting trail?

* Caulton Tudor has his take on the schedules up on ACCNow. The comments include links to pdf files for the composite schedule and team-by-team breakdowns.

* If State can find a way to generally break-even through mid-October then the the Pack has a legitimate opportunity to make a run late in the season and help our bowl changes with uncle “momentum’. At Maryland; At Duke; Wake; AT Carolina; and Miami is a manageable late season schedule that could play in our favor.

* State has seven home games in 2008, and effectively eight when you include Duke. Its been five years since the Wolfpack had the opportunity to earn (what used to be) sure wins against the Blue Devils while our friends in Chapel Hill have been feasting on the Navy Blue. As Pack Pride said, “The Wolfpack and the Blue Devils played every season for 80 years (from 1924-2003 with a one-year break in 1944) before ACC expansion.”

* We’ve said it a million times and we will say it a million more – there is NOTHING other than a lack of innovation and foresight stopping NC State and Duke from playing NON-CONFERENCE games in the years that we aren’t scheduled to play ACC games. Why in the world is NC State rewarding an institution that routinely takes players that cannot academically qualify to play in the ACC to the detriment of one of our conference bretheren who NEEDS our people to fill up their stands as often as they can get it?

* This schedule offers a TON of excitement to Wolfpackers and serves to already get me jazzed for 2009 when State will host South Carolina, East Carolina, Pittsburgh, Clemson, Maryland and North Carolina in Carter-Finley in Coach O’Brien’s third season.

* The ACC has some interesting games out of conference games this year including the season opener between Clemson and Alabama in the Georgia Dome. Additionally, Miami and Florida renew their rivalry while Wake plays Ole Miss; Miami gets Texas A&M again, Virginia Tech tackles Nebraska, Maryland plays Cal and Notre Dame returns last year’s game with UNC-CH.

Don’t forget the UVA/Southern Cal game as another interesting OOC game. I’m not saying it’s going to be close but it’s still interesting.

I had forgotten that we are hosting ECU again in 2009.

Ugh. Guess it saves ECU $$ in their travel budget…

^ Anything that we NC State can do to help out Terry Holland and ECU!

Now there’s a move by Swofford we can all applaud. Show those jackasses who’s boss, Johnny.

I will break the schedule down next week.

Solid schedule, tough enough to test the team but not with unwinnable games. We should step up to the plate and play USC every year IMO, and we better go down to Orlando and squash UCF this year. In reality they cost us a bowl game last season.

As far as BC goes, early or late, that is going to be a rivalry. Too much has gone on, and pride is at stake on both sides.

I’m excited about the opening game in Columbia. This is a perfect forum to stage a mass following to that game for those of us that intend to go.

I am disappointed about the third straight year of no mid- to late-October home games, since those are without question the most beautiful weekends of the year for football in North Carolina.

It’s a shame we end another season at home Thanksgiving weekend against a non-rival. Hopefully that game will really mean something so the stands will be full and the crowd will be enthusiastic.

I obviously mixed up my directional Floridas.

“and we better go down to Orlando and squash UCF this year.”

What schedule did you get this from? Or what sport? We do play South Florida in Carter-Finley.

The ACC does not want NCSU to play Duke as a non conference game. The same is true for all schools. Based on that it’s doubtful you will ever see an ACC team play more than the approved 8 ACC teams in a season. I don’t think any other BCS conference has teams play each other outside the alloted 8 conference games – the PAC 10 has 9 games so nobody gets to skip a team.

We need to represent in Columbia that first game. I sure hope the Wolfpack Club has ticket packages for that one. We need to have 10,000 there!!! Let’s make some noise!!!!!!

Let’s be reasonable and not expect to regularly play a conference team (Duke) when we have to play ACC-wannabes every year (ECU). You’ve got to have your priorities in the right place.

Well I have given my opinion in the past re: C. Tudor.
I think he is a UNC wanna be that really has no clue.

He projects BC to finish last in the division and we are fifth.

That will not even be close.

Take everything Tudor says to the trash.

SFN, am I interpreting what you said correctly. The ACC intentionally changed BC’s schedule because they leaked the schedule ahead of time???

IF so, that truely says alot about the Conference. Wow!!!!!! How can anyone expect there to be unbiased scheduling from a conference with heavy UNC connections that is that, shall we say, “mean spirited”.

While I am no fan of BC, the leak could have been a mistake, who knows.

If the UNC bias penetrates its way into everything imaginable , but hard to prove, at the conference office, why don’t the university President’s fire litte Johnny and get someone with more integrity.

I’d feel safe saying that Lower Carolina will allot only the minimum to us for that game, so there won’t be 10,000 State fans at that game. They regularly set percent-capacity attendance records, even when they were 1-11. That won’t be an easy ticket.

    7-5

  16. roandaddy 02/11/2008 at 8:40 AM #

Been to several USC games.. tickets will be available outside if you don’t mind the risk of trying to find one.
Its a LONG time until the game starts.. but I would expect you can find tickets, even if the Wolfpack Club doesn’t have tix available.

LRM : I applaud them for FINALLY backing down from scheduling home games in the last few weeks of October. I have many less than fond memories of trying to find parking for games during those weeks due to the parking conflict with the State Fair. My freshmen year my dad (parent’s weekend) wound up parking in Cary and walking to the stadium for a game.

IF…we can get someone to emerge at QB other than Daniel Evans and keep other teams from putting 17 or 18 guys in the box, armed with the knowledge that our QB couldn’t knock a butterfly out of its flight-pattern with his throws…

IF…we can continue to get good, solid progress from our OL (we went from Condition – Putrid to Condition – Hey! Not so bad! by the end of the year)…

IF…we can avoid the killer injury bug (some injuries are inevitable, but we have to avoid losing our best players for the season over and over and over)…

IF…we can get decent production from our JUCOs (safety is a must, def. line production will probably determine when we make that switch to a 3-4)…

IF…we can continue to get our guys to buy into the Tom O’Brien system (at the start of the year, we were 85 round pegs trying to fit into 22 square holes)…

IF…we can get average special teams play (that means having a punter who can consistently get a 40-yard-punt out of his leg and avoid the 10 yard punts as well as the 60 yard punts that seem to show up everytime we cross the 50)…

I could see us being a six- or seven-win team.

Wilson or Beck or Burke HAS to emerge though. We have to have at the very minimum a league-average quarterback. Daniel Evans can NOT be that guy. It’s blood from a turnip. It’s Mike Hampton trying to make the rotation for the Braves. It just ain’t happenin’.

Center appears to be a question mark on the OL. We should be good to go at both tackle spots and both guard spots, but center is the weak point right now.

WR and RB should be the strong points on offense. We get an All-ACC TE back. We should be healthy at running back with solid depth. And we have a ton of quality receivers in Donald Bowens, Jarvis Williams, OJ Spencer, Stephen Howard, Jay Smith, and what seems like 20 other guys.

There’s a lot of ifs…but I feel better than I did last year.

Hey Noah…you could’ve left out the depressing Hampton comment. I had forgotten who he was (just not his salary).

  24. Classof89 02/11/2008 at 4:20 PM #

I am not sure I agree with the popular emerging consensus that our schedule is tough early, easier late. I don’t think playing on the road against a team that pasted you 39-0 at home the previous season constitutes part of the “manageable” part of the season. And, also, when are we going to stop minimizing Wake Forest? They are clearly the premier Division I program in the state of NC right now, and have beaten us three straight and four out of the last five.

In fact, I don’t consider the home game against Wake any more of a “gimme” than the thursday night home game against FSU. Put that together with a trip to Chapel Hill, and 2-3 in our last five is more than possible.

On the other hand, I don’t think the early schedule (three winnables sandwiched around likely pastings at Clemson and USC) is as tough as it looks on paper. South Florida, ECU, and W&M are three that I would expect to go 2-1 in, and hope to go 3-0.
