Wolfpack Nabs LB Recruit From South Carolina; More Recruiting (Updated)

South Carolina linebacker Sterling Lucas, was rumored to be a ‘lock’ for the University of South Carolina…that is until he committed to NC State this morning.

Lucas is considered one of the Top 25 middle linebackers in the country and chose the Wolfpack over offers from UNC-CH, USC, Maryland, Michigan State and Wake Forest.

Lucas becomes the 4th major linebacker prospect committed to the Wolfpack in this recruiting class joining Terrell Manning (see commitment entry), William Beasley and Dwayne Maddox (see commitment entry). It is generally understood that Terrell Manning will redshirt next year to give his injured knee sufficient time to rehabilitate therefore opening the door for one of the other three commits to potentially earn playing time as a true freshman.

We don’t typically spend too much time on recruiting, but we can’t help but be super excited about what Coach O’Brien is doing in Raleigh. As evidenced by this group of linebacker commitments, Coach Tom O’Brien has done an EXCELLENT job recruiting talent at a position which Wolfpack desperately needed help.

This link will take you to some more random comments about some of the Wolfpack’s 2008 commitments.

Additionally, if you have access to ESPN INsider then you can see a narrative summary of the ACC Atlantic Division’s recruiting by clicking here.

Tom O’Brien probably did not achieve the success he desired in his first-year at NC State, but off the field, the former Boston College head coach is building a quality recruiting class like he did for many years at Chestnut Hill. We actually expect even better classes down the road as O’Brien becomes accustomed with a recruiting area far more fertile than New England and with an admissions department presumably far less rigorous than BC’s. This current 2008 class may reflect the changes already taking place, as the Wolfpack currently have the No. 20 class heading into signing day and perhaps have O’Brien’s next Matt Ryan at quarterback.

…and…just for a little fun in the event that you were interested…

Despite a slide down the stretch, Boston College established itself as one of the premier teams in the country throughout most of the 2007 season and tallied its highest win total in more than 60 years. The popular question from BC fans since September has been whether its success and jump into elite status on the field would translate into a stellar recruiting class.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t.

The Eagles did not appear in the top 25 of our latest class rankings and do not look likely to climb in on February 6.

I don’t remember TOB and Bible saying much positive about Burke. I also think that Burke and Trestman were a good match. I don’t know how he would have done in Trest’s offense.

I don’t know how Wilson will do in this one or if we’ll ever see him play. I do know it’s hard for me to imagine him playing worse collectively than we saw our QBs play vs. Central Florida, BC, Louisville, Clemson, and UMd.

    ^Levar Fisher was MOC’s recruit, not CTC’s.
I am much more optimistic about football than about basketball in the coming years. When was the last time we brought in a proven winner to our basketball or football programs? This recruiting news shouldn’t surprise us at all. There is no doubt in my mind that with TOB at the helm we will consistently have 8-9 wins every year. I’m not as optimistic about basketball as we just don’t have a proven winner right now. I sure hope he becomes one though.

Does this signal an anticipated shift to the 3-4 scheme in the near future?

    I certainly hope not.

    Noah,
Not sure if you were joking, but I think you are forgetting a certain Defensive End that was the number one overall pick — he was in the same class as Tulloch — the both left as juniors, I think.

ed89, I think that we were talking about some of the linebacking talent that chuck brought in, as that seems to get the short shrift as compared to some of chuck’s other recruits.

packgrad, was fisher a MOC recruit?? I guess he was then. If that’s the case, MOC brought in a couple of really heavy hitters in his last class, i.e. phil, fisher.

VaWolf – the 3-4 is coming.

Being top-20 recruiting OLs, LBs, and a QB is a lot different than being top-20 recruting ATHs, wide receivers, CBs, and RBs.

O’Brien is getting guys where it counts, in the trenches. I’m freaking super psyched by the makeup of this class.

tidbit i found on WRAL this morning…

Leesville halfback and defensive back Zach Greene, a junior, is also making recruiting headlines this week. Coach Green told WRAL on Tuesday that Greene received an offer from Tom O’Brien and the N.C. State Wolfpack on Monday.

Greene recorded 48 tackles and three interceptions during his junior season, but he was also capable of playing on the offensive side of the ball.

In 15 games, Greene ran for 110 yards and one touchdown, but he also caught 45 passes for 704 yards and eight touchdowns. Greene also ran a punt return back for a touchdown in 2007.

With one year of eligibility remaining at Leesville Road, Greene has already posted All-Conference honors in his last two seasons.

My buddy is Bible’s grad assistant and he said Glennon is the best recruit we’ve had since Rivers – “The Real Deal”. Also he said Glennon could very well start as a true freshman, but right now they were gonna try to redshirt Glennon and Wilson looked to be the man for next year, at least to start off. Of course though once pre-season practices get going….you never know

SFN: We’ve heard the same thing. Therefore I am bolding this^ comment so that we don’t have the same tangents as we had at the beginning of this comment section where we share how things are going to be and then people start asking how things are going to be.

The recruits TOB has picked up given that we had a sub par year and didn’t go bowling is nothing short of phenomenal. Note the positions he has gone after, the caliber recruit…and landed.
It speaks directly to what type of coach/man TOB is and what he offers a young man in coming to NC State, and that is a tremendous opportunity to become a fundamentally outstanding player with legitimate entrees into the NFL.
    What an offer.
    GO PACK!

If I’m not mistaken, the above mentioned Zach Greene’s dad is/was attached to the Wolfpack program (former player?). If this is the same person I’m thinking of, they come (or at least did while we were still there) to all the games and are big fans. Of course, this could be someone completely different.

It’s popular to bash CTC now that he’s gone, but he certainly had a pretty solid defense just about the whole time he was here (although it did drop of toward the end). And he got guys “in the trenches” as well, just not on the offensive side. The 2004 D-line was THE best in the nation – 3 of those starters went 1st round in the NFL. In fact, I’d say one of CTC’s strengths was D-line, and it had been a while since we had a decent D-line. MOC recruited weak D-linemen, but had a couple of good receivers (Holt, K-Rob). CTC’s biggest holes recruiting wise were QB & OL (I know he closed the deal on PR, but I don’t give him much credit for that), which are easily the two most important areas on the offensive side of the ball.

Speaking of CTC recruiting packgrad. It says a lot about the star systems when 2 of those vaunted DLmen (McCargo and Lawson) were 1-star recruits (Lawson was actually listed as TE). Williams was the only one getting any real press and he wasn’t even a “top” name on the national lists.

Seeing what TOB did with names like Thomas Barnes, Marcus Kuhn and Underwood last year, I have to think that the man knows what he wants and will get the best out of these kids.

I just checked WF’s basketball schedule. How the hell does it work out that WF only has to play Duke and UNC once each with one of the games at home and one on the road? At the same time, we play Duke and UNC twice.

WTF? How does that happen? I thought Wake’s permanent rival was Duke.

  15. Mr O 01/30/2008 at 10:30 AM #

    More on the scheduling:

Wake has 3 games against UNC, DUke and Clemson.

We have 6 games against UNC, Duke, and Clemson.

Wake has a Tuesday home game before our matchup against Wake on Sunday. We have a 9 pm tipoff at Cameron on Thursday giving us little time to prepare for Sunday’s game against Wake.

    WTF?

    http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/md/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/acc_schedule.pdf

That is a link to the basketball rotation for scheduling. The “primary parnter” philosophy used by the ACC does not work in our favor in either sport. As much as I enjoy the rivalry with UNC, it isn’t worth putting our basketball program at a disadvantage nor is it worth giving a division rival(Wake) in football a game against Duke every season when we only play them twice every six years.

  17. Old_Wolf 01/30/2008 at 11:19 AM #

Mr O – that link has something odd – according to it, unc-ch was supposed to have WF in its home and away rotation, but WF does not have unc-ch in it’s home and away rotation — for the current year.

I am assuming a typo? Or did that get changed since then?

    >Someone showed me a quote from Mac at the Tard Pit about how Terrell Manning was never going to recover from his injury and how all of these guys were “scrap heap” players.

Don’t make me laugh. If Mr. Manning was signed by UNC-CH, Chief Davis would have figured out some way to cut him loose after the injury.

  19. Mr O 01/30/2008 at 12:32 PM #

Old_Wolf: Good catch. That is really odd.

I may be reading too much into this article, but I think the timing is interesting in light of the solid recruiting class State has, as compared to UNC’s rather meager class. Note the two Carolina recruits mentioned beneath the meat of the article. Interesting is that BC and Wake are mentioned as teams that have succeeded at recruiting middling talent, not TOB or Grobe as coaches.

Great addition to the LB corps, and an awesome example to TOB and staff indentifying up- and comers before they blow up (Lucas at North/South Shrine).

On a thread here at SFN, comments were made immediately following TOB’s hire that he had and excellent eye for fresh faced talent and the guts to after the recruit early in the process. the quote that I remember from it was something said by former ND HC, Ty Willimham. To paraphrase as follows:
“I usually tell my assistant coach’s to find out where TOB from BC has been looking, and get the name and address of the kid. Get in there after him because he’s probably the goods, and if he would consider BC then he sure as heck fire would probrably want to be a Golden Domer.” (Not at all how coach Willimham would speak, no disrepect.

My guess is that Lucas plays SLB for us in a two deep role after he starts of as reserve. He will back up are most talented player, IMO, on defense, Nate Irving. That leaves Michels and Maddux up the gut and Barnes and Ware at WLB. We are going to be better as a group in the LB position then we were last year. Drastically if there are no more injuries (reaches to wood nearby to knock.)

Paging Noah: About a month ago on a thread about Glennon on recruiting I listed “My dream team of future Pack recruits, as follows. 1) WR Walker (always a pipe dream, he never wanted an official just attention) 2)Mattes (check!) 3)Scruggs (thought we had a chance, but the ‘Ville said he could bring his Tuba and play in the band a halftime.) 4) Lucas (CHECK, please!) 5) A kicker who could boot it far and knew where it was going (sort of sarcastic)

You said that all of these wish’s were not worth getting any hopes up for. Care to comment?

  25. bTHEredterror 01/30/2008 at 5:25 PM #

    On point as usual VT.

I think if they sign the kicker from Raleigh and one or both of the Hargrave DEs, its the best class we could expect considering where we were after Amato’s last class. I would go as far as to say it is the best class we’ve had since I started keeping up in the late 80’s. It is certainly the most effective as far as team needs.
