NC State 79 Miami 77 (OT); X-Man Gavin Saves The Day

What is it with NC State vs Miami games? Two sports. Two overtimes. Two Wolfpack victories!

Before NC State stepped on the court tonight the Wolfpack’s triumvirate of early season Big East victims were generating some major progress for our future NCAA Tournament resume as Villanova won at Syracuse, Seton Hall defeated Louisville and Cincinnati upset Top 20 ranked Pittsburgh. (Did anyone mention that Carolina was knocked from their perch by Maryland?).

State started today at #50 in the RPI and climbed a few spots before tonight’s game in the RBC Center even tipped. By the end of the evening the Wolfpack sits at #36 in the RPI having played the 44th toughest schedule in America and having won five games against Top 100 opponents.

The Charlotte Observer is going to really hate this one. After a couple of weeks of odd coverage and inexplicable comments from a sophomoric staff they aren’t going to know what to do after such a character-filled win by the Wolfpack.

Now some important points to make about tonight —

* Let me make one point very clear — Coach Lowe’s offensive genius was responsible for the JJ Hickson tip to tie with just seconds to go in overtime. If you go back and watch the play, you will see that it was designed for Gavin Grant to take that lane to the hole and Hickson to circle through behind Grant in case of a miss. Grant got hacked without getting a call from the official and Hickson timed his roll through the lane perfectly. How ironic that State wins the game because of two things that we do so poorly – rebound and create turnovers.

* How awesome is Gavin Grant? How much are we going to miss him next year?

* It was a classic, old-school day in ACC Basketball as kids all through the state and the region were stuck inside due to bad weather and had the opportunity to watch back to back to back to back ACC games that they will remember for a LONG TIME. Today was vintage.

* From the first possession tonight we saw a totally different Wolfpack team on offense. This team played with energy and was sharp and crisp while playing with focus. Speaking of focus…when Courtney Fells is focused he is an excellent college basketball player. With Grant’s departure at the end of this season I hope Fells can continue to step up to carry the load as our primary player on the wing.

* What I am about to say is actually pretty sad, but unfortunately true — I think tonight’s win over Miami may have represented the most exciting win in ESA/RBC Center history. Last year’s win over Carolina clearly ranks as the “best” win by nature of their national ranking, the style & excitement in which the game was played and the fact that it was Carolina. But, tonight’s win at the buzzer bests anything else that I can remember in the RBC. Others that immediately come to mind would be Justin Gainey’s shot to beat Maryland and the ESA’s opening night against Georgia.

* Who is responsible for teaching the NC State big men how to play defense and block out to rebound. And, what is the problem? As much as Jack “Tookie Williams” McClinton hurt State in the second half, the only reason Miami was even in the game was their ability to score at will from the low post on and on offensive rebounding. The reason the Hurricanes were able to get the ball inside is because our big men don’t play defense. Standing behind the offensive player on the block so that his receipt of the ball is a given is NOT defense. Tracy Smith seems to be the only NC State post player who understands how to front a man down low. After Miami’s bigs were the willing recipients of easy entry passes, they then were able to score easily because we continue to choose not to double down on the ball in the post. It is a recipe for disaster.

* Coach Lowe seems to have settled into his rotational preference for substitutions and Tracy Smith’s hard work on defense is earning him some of Brandon Costner’s time.

* Javi Gonazlez is showing the shooting stroke to which the coaches were originally attracted and have been swearing that he possessed. If he can step up and nail a couple of threes a game then State’s offense suddenly opens up more and can become much more effective.

* Marques Johnson cannot shoot. He knows that he cannot shoot and therefore he doesn’t shoot. He does a lot of things well to have only played in a handful of college games, but he has no confidence in his shot and he is a liability if the opposing team plays zone against us.

* Both point guards have GOT to step in about 5 to 7 feet to run the offense. Our offense continues to start WAY too far away from the basket.

* Miami’s football team may be working hard for a better image, but their basketball program sure feels ‘rough’.

* I was initially fearful when I saw friggin Jason Capel was going to be announcing this game, but Capel (and Steve Martin) actually did a fine job of announcing until they stumbled through the ‘Anthony King foul’ at the end of overtime.

* Did you notice that, despite playing great offense in the first half that Brandon Costner was nowhere to be seen in most of the second half and overtime? Something is going on there. I watched Costner a lot tonight and despite his offensive proficiency he was caught flat footed on rebounds and defense. I don’t know if it was lazy or if his mind is somewhere else. We can only speculate that Tracy Smith and Ben McCauley‘s willingness to do both elevated them to Costner’s time tonight. Additionally, I think Miami’s athleticism was a little much for him.

* Speaking of Big Ben McCauley, how about a shout out for his guts while playing injured tonight. Do not underestimate McCauley’s impact on our defensive rebounding late the game.

* Coach Lowe is now 1-1 against Miami avenging last year’s egg that was laid in Coral Gables late in the season.

After taking a day to digest the BB game, I keep coming back to BJD’s comments in the pre-game entry….

My gut simply tells me that Miami sucks.

Their play with the lead in both regulation and the OT confirms this assessment. The fact that State needed help to put Miami away in Raleigh says alot about both teams. Someone needs to send a thank you note to Coral Gables for another gift.

The first half was really good….and the second half was not. We need more of the former and less of the later.

If Javi can keep hitting shots, it just opens up our inside game, and in effect changes the scouting report (e.g. triple team JJ). We are still not a good team but may have made improvements, and considering what we’ve seen this year I’m comfortable with incremental improvements in fundamentals and team cohesiveness (although still a lot of one-on-one plays). So what if Miami is the suck, we needed a confidence-builder badly, and that we got.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say Miami “sucks”. But, I do expect them to be in the bottom 25% of the league when everything ultimately shakes out.

The interesting thing about the ACC this year is that the ‘middle’ of the conference is wider and deeper than we originally thought before the season started.

For the most part – Wake Forest, Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech are all a little better than most people thought before the season.

So, there is no telling how the 9 teams behind Carolina, Duke and Clemson are going to shake out.

Do you realize that the WORST RPI in the ACC right now is Georgia Tech at #83. That is INSANE for any league, let alone a twelve team league.

Anyone could truly beat anyone else at home or on the road, including Miami. A lot will hinge on the mix of where they play whom.

Great win yesterday. I don’t know where the U will end up in the standings, but I like their bigs and McClinton can shoot with anyone. They do not play smart and that will cost some games. It looks like a good portion of the league is about at the same level. I’ll say DU, nc, and CU at the top while VT is at the bottom. That leaves 8 teams bashing each others brains out every week.

Alright so the pack is 1-2 so far….
good win, hard fought (as all should be)

I think the abiding lesson of this game was simply that effort matters.

No, we weren’t that good in the 2nd half (McClinton WAS) and we were extremely fortunate at the end of both regulation (Grant 3pt play on dumb foul, Miami shooting with 10sec left in tie game) and in the OT (Fells contested bomb from 22ft, King missed FT, Hickson reb/score, Grant steal/score). However, our improved effort was palpable throughout. Guys played with more abandon (BC, Javy, even MJ was shooting) and more passion (Mac, BC, Grant). Had we lost, this thread wouldn’t be as upbeat (gross understatement) BUT it wouldn’t change the fact that guys were out there pushing themselves as they really hadn’t done to this point.

IMO, we are not about to become the 3rd or 4th best team in this league b/c we have real holes at PG and in perimeter shooting, generally. However, with hustle, this team can grind its way into the tourney. That’s more than we could say before Saturday night.

Something I noticed that was encouraging. After having perhaps his best half of the year, at least offensively, Costner didn’t play at all the last 15 minutes or so. He could have used that as a reason to sulk. But instead, everytime they showed him on camera, he was vigorously urging the other guys on and had his head in the game.

Tells me that it is all about matchups and desire.

If we get improved play from the point, things start looking much, much better down the stretch. We need to go 8-5 from here in, tough but doable.

Worth restating. He was also beaming during the post-game interviews.

“The problem for us primarily lies in not fronting the post and allowing such easy entry passes.”

a team can’t always front the post. It also leads to poor rebounding position.

“The problem for us primarily lies in not fronting the post and allowing such easy entry passes.”

An easy entry pass if more the problem than fronting IMO.
The guards have to pressure the passer to make it a hard pass. Our problem is if our players get close enough to place that pressure, the other team drives right past them.

If Costner was half as excited as I was about his sinking a few jumpers then I expect he’ll smile through at least noon Wednesday.

I literally stood in my living room and cheered when his first shot went in on Saturday. If we’re going to do anything this year, we need Brandon to score in the worst possible way.

If Miami is so bad, remember their coach, Frank Haith, was a guy many of you wanted as our coach. For the life of me the other night, I could not figure why they threw up a rushed shot with the score tied and 9 seconds left. While we missed our shot at the buzzer, there is no way we should have even had a shot.

That team is not bad – anytime you have a scorer like McClinton you are going to be in the game.

And like many of you posted above, we all pretty much figured 1-2 in conf play at this point, so not all is lost. Could be a Swofford conspiracy, to make us start against 2 tough teams on the road – surprised we did not have to play at Cameron for #3. The 4-12 teams are all fairly even, and look what Maryland did. This is the same Maryland team that was losing to junior colleges earlier. The UNX team that lost to MD was not the same team that played us. I think Roy had them ready for last year’s debacle. I am not looking through my red colored glasses, but there are plenty of opportunities (still) for this team to go 8-8 or 9-7 in conference.

Am I happy to settle for .500 in conference? Not by any stretch. I am happy for progress, and I saw progress. A team that fought hard, played together, and clawed and scratched for 45 minutes. Forgot who posted about what a shame we could not win it in regulation. I think it is better for us to win it like we did – it will have more impact. We were down late, we fought back from behind, and won it wiht a bucket and steal.

Get behind this team Pack fans, they need our support. IF there are chemistry issues, two things fix those – wins and support. Two things make chemistry issues worse – losses and fans giving up.

^agreed. When we lose again, I hope to see less negativity from our fans. Doubting Sid & bashing players does no good.

I was surprised at how good Miami was. I think you will see them finish around the middle of the pack. Just my two cents…

i’ve been away since the Miami game so no SFN for me this weekend 🙁 … but the main thing i wanted to say was …

JAVI – MY MAN!!! WAY TO ‘STEP UP’ AND PROVE ME WRONG FOR A GAME BUDDY!!! WELL DONE

still a lot of room for improvement for both of our point guards, but i can’t deny that javi in particular really stepped in and played very well tonight after struggling on defense early … that was so awesome to see him FINALLY with some confidence … i was overjoyed when he hit that crucial ‘3’ in the second half

second half defensive performance was disappointing, particularly as alluded to in the entry, but THERE IS NO DOUBT this was a different team tonight from the very start … and they didn’t give up when miami came back and took the lead!!! it looked like miami would win at the end of both regulation and overtime – but WE did!!!

    SO AWESOME!!!

wish everyone on here could have been there 🙂

  17. wufpup76 01/21/2008 at 6:01 PM #

^also, i see that some of you are completely UNDERSELLING a solid Miami team … i’ve seen them play a few times this season and they are indeed solid … a bit overrated coming into our game? – sure, but they definitely do not suck like some here seem to believe … now this could be a “collapse” lose for them where they lose a few more games b/c of the way they lost this one, but that doesn’t mean that wasn’t a pretty good team we came back from the dead on saturday night

also, costner played really well for the most part and hit some crucial shots … yes, some aspects still need improvement but please give the kid some much deserved love after that game 🙂 … his attitude about just wanting to win has appeared genuine to me all season

    go pack !!! 🙂

If Hickson is ready for the NBA, so is every other big in the ACC. He was totally outplayed by King. Didn’t even come close to stopping him.

This talk about Hickson being one and done before the season was absurd. I hope that State coaches quit making such comments preseason about how good and mature a player is. Let’s see how he does against the GT freshman and a few others. He has a way to go to be even amongst the best centers in the conference.

And did I say how out of shape our players are. Just watch how our offensive motion simply stops with about 10-12 minutes to go in a game. The only reason Miami made the run they did is becasue we started standing around on offense and then get beat by the fast break.

Great in, we were more than lucky. Better lucky than good. Just think what all you guys would be saying if we lost.

Player Name FG-FGA FT-FTA OF DE TOT TP A TO BLK S

    KING, Anthony 6-12 1-2 2 5 7 13 1 5 2 0

    HICKSON, J.J 5-10 4-8 2 7 9 14 2 3 2 1

Don’t know how you can say he was totally outplayed when he was better than or equal to King in every category. Not to mention the senior King’s clutch passing and shooting in OT.
