NC State 79 Miami 77 (OT); X-Man Gavin Saves The Day

What is it with NC State vs Miami games? Two sports. Two overtimes. Two Wolfpack victories!

Before NC State stepped on the court tonight the Wolfpack’s triumvirate of early season Big East victims were generating some major progress for our future NCAA Tournament resume as Villanova won at Syracuse, Seton Hall defeated Louisville and Cincinnati upset Top 20 ranked Pittsburgh. (Did anyone mention that Carolina was knocked from their perch by Maryland?).

State started today at #50 in the RPI and climbed a few spots before tonight’s game in the RBC Center even tipped. By the end of the evening the Wolfpack sits at #36 in the RPI having played the 44th toughest schedule in America and having won five games against Top 100 opponents.

The Charlotte Observer is going to really hate this one. After a couple of weeks of odd coverage and inexplicable comments from a sophomoric staff they aren’t going to know what to do after such a character-filled win by the Wolfpack.

Now some important points to make about tonight —

* Let me make one point very clear — Coach Lowe’s offensive genius was responsible for the JJ Hickson tip to tie with just seconds to go in overtime. If you go back and watch the play, you will see that it was designed for Gavin Grant to take that lane to the hole and Hickson to circle through behind Grant in case of a miss. Grant got hacked without getting a call from the official and Hickson timed his roll through the lane perfectly. How ironic that State wins the game because of two things that we do so poorly – rebound and create turnovers.

* How awesome is Gavin Grant? How much are we going to miss him next year?

* It was a classic, old-school day in ACC Basketball as kids all through the state and the region were stuck inside due to bad weather and had the opportunity to watch back to back to back to back ACC games that they will remember for a LONG TIME. Today was vintage.

* From the first possession tonight we saw a totally different Wolfpack team on offense. This team played with energy and was sharp and crisp while playing with focus. Speaking of focus…when Courtney Fells is focused he is an excellent college basketball player. With Grant’s departure at the end of this season I hope Fells can continue to step up to carry the load as our primary player on the wing.

* What I am about to say is actually pretty sad, but unfortunately true — I think tonight’s win over Miami may have represented the most exciting win in ESA/RBC Center history. Last year’s win over Carolina clearly ranks as the “best” win by nature of their national ranking, the style & excitement in which the game was played and the fact that it was Carolina. But, tonight’s win at the buzzer bests anything else that I can remember in the RBC. Others that immediately come to mind would be Justin Gainey’s shot to beat Maryland and the ESA’s opening night against Georgia.

* Who is responsible for teaching the NC State big men how to play defense and block out to rebound. And, what is the problem? As much as Jack “Tookie Williams” McClinton hurt State in the second half, the only reason Miami was even in the game was their ability to score at will from the low post on and on offensive rebounding. The reason the Hurricanes were able to get the ball inside is because our big men don’t play defense. Standing behind the offensive player on the block so that his receipt of the ball is a given is NOT defense. Tracy Smith seems to be the only NC State post player who understands how to front a man down low. After Miami’s bigs were the willing recipients of easy entry passes, they then were able to score easily because we continue to choose not to double down on the ball in the post. It is a recipe for disaster.

* Coach Lowe seems to have settled into his rotational preference for substitutions and Tracy Smith’s hard work on defense is earning him some of Brandon Costner’s time.

* Javi Gonazlez is showing the shooting stroke to which the coaches were originally attracted and have been swearing that he possessed. If he can step up and nail a couple of threes a game then State’s offense suddenly opens up more and can become much more effective.

* Marques Johnson cannot shoot. He knows that he cannot shoot and therefore he doesn’t shoot. He does a lot of things well to have only played in a handful of college games, but he has no confidence in his shot and he is a liability if the opposing team plays zone against us.

* Both point guards have GOT to step in about 5 to 7 feet to run the offense. Our offense continues to start WAY too far away from the basket.

* Miami’s football team may be working hard for a better image, but their basketball program sure feels ‘rough’.

* I was initially fearful when I saw friggin Jason Capel was going to be announcing this game, but Capel (and Steve Martin) actually did a fine job of announcing until they stumbled through the ‘Anthony King foul’ at the end of overtime.

* Did you notice that, despite playing great offense in the first half that Brandon Costner was nowhere to be seen in most of the second half and overtime? Something is going on there. I watched Costner a lot tonight and despite his offensive proficiency he was caught flat footed on rebounds and defense. I don’t know if it was lazy or if his mind is somewhere else. We can only speculate that Tracy Smith and Ben McCauley‘s willingness to do both elevated them to Costner’s time tonight. Additionally, I think Miami’s athleticism was a little much for him.

* Speaking of Big Ben McCauley, how about a shout out for his guts while playing injured tonight. Do not underestimate McCauley’s impact on our defensive rebounding late the game.

* Coach Lowe is now 1-1 against Miami avenging last year’s egg that was laid in Coral Gables late in the season.

Good win. Keep the faith and don’t panic next time we lose.

Reminded me of last years end of the year run. They just seemed to will a victory from the hands of defeat. GO PACK!!!

    Great TEAM effort last night.

You guys think Sid wanted this game just a little bit tonight? It was obvious how much this game meant. I’m just thrilled – and it was fun to Sidney so happy tonight.
*I was thinking that we were getting Miami’s best shot.
*Key adjustment very late in the game: Sidney switched Grant to McClinton (instead of Fells, who as we’ve seen from time to time was giving the guard too much room.) After making his first shot, McClinton was never heard from again.
*Given that – don’t be surprised if Gavin takes a more active role defending. I don’t know if it’s legit fatigue or if Gavin’s just the best-conditioned guy on the team – but he’s got a great motor.
*Javi played super. The guy doesn’t have the best physical skills, but he’s been a scrapper since day 1.
*The reason our offense starts out so far back is because of the limited skills of Jay and Marquez.
*Smith gave some good minutes after not being used most of the game.
*McCauley redeemed himself late in the second w/ his best play of the year.
*Costner had a great first half. Don’t be too hard on his conditioning…I think he’s more hurt than were being led to believe.
*Huge win tonight. Glad to see the RPI boost – we need to follow up w/ another strong effort vs. GaTech.

I just read a article on WRAL about the game. In the article the guy says that the wolfpack faithful booed the State team off the court at halftime, at the last game, at the RBC center. I have lifetime seats and I have been to all the games and I have not heard anyone boo the team off the court. WRAL-Oh how they hate us so

They got mixed up (wonder why?). I was watching the Maryland v UNC game and the Carolina fans were booing as the teams headed to the locker room at the end of the half. Announcers claimed they were booing the refs, but they were clearly surprised there were any boos from the fans, so you never know.

SFN: Clarification — the article stated that the Wolfpack faithful booed the State team off the court at halftime of the LAST GAME. Not yesterday. Those odd and irrelevant comments actually originated from the AP national story and not WRAL-TV. I saw them last night on Yahoo and again in this morning’s Charlotte Observer and also found them to be strange since (1) the last home game was so long ago that nobody remembers and (2) you never see this kind of stuff written about other teams.

    Chop,
I suspect you are right about Costner and if that is the case we
should see more of action like he showed in the first half as he works his way back. For the first time this season I saw team play like I saw last spring.

    Things I liked:
    Much better level of intensity.
I thought Javi and MJ both showed improvement.
Hickson had a tough shooting night but he didn’t quit and sulk.
Big Ben showed flashes of last year’s Big Ben.
    Fells had a good game.
Grant once again was the heart and soul of the team – and he gave a great post game interview.

    Things I didn’t like:
    Rebounding
    Post defense
    Some lapses on defense

Even if this game had been a loss I would have seen some improvement.
I thought Miami was at their best for this game.

Better yet, wonder if the talking heads will speak to the point that ASU lost a 10 point lead in the 2nd half and only scored 22 points? My, oh my does that sound familiar.

Way to go Sid! A little emotion and toughness never hurt anybody…plus the fact that your lone senior on the court was actually thinking at the end of the game. Awesome.

Some free advice: it’s time to put Herb Sendek in the rear view mirror. Wish Herb the best and quit worrying about what he and his teams do. NC State fans are still allowing themselves to be defined by Coach Sendek and his tenure here.

SFN: I think most Wolfpackers agree with you. The obvious problem is that the local media and radio shows keep harkening his name whenever ASU wins and NCSU doesn’t. Oddly enough they don’t seem to say anything when the converse holds true – just like last year when ASU won 7 games against horrible Div One opponents while NC State was over achieving with 1 scholarship player who had previously earned legitimate minutes.

“Why did they keep showing the replay with the hand in the way over AND OVER AGAIN!??”

None of the other views even had the play. Probably the worst camera work I have ever seen.
Capel’s voice got on my nerves but he was not as biased as I thought he would be. I liked the othe guy giving him grief for UNC losing. He took it pretyt well.
Sid’s and Grant’s interviews at hte ned were priceless.

Sid had the right players in at the end. Costner is going to be seeing less and less time.
I think Courtney was tired in the second half. He did a great job in the first half on McClinton.

Where is noah to spout his doom and gloom and call Sid a horrible coach?

Coy…I’ve been there with the DVR. Luckily, Time Warner will give you a new one when you beat the piss out of the one you have for “quitting on you”. Don’t Give up…DVR…don’t ever give up.

Highstick, yes that damn hand was all over the place. Maybe we can see about getting that enthusiastic fan a better seat for the next game so us die hards stuck hours away can see the big moments?

Like I said in the earlier thread, we need some confidence in hitting the outside shots. We had it first half…seem to lose it a bit in the second half…and then Fells finds it with an insane 3 with time dwindling.

I hope our teams uses this the rest of the year to build on!

By the way, Grant is good at that little sneaky comeback steal. I’ve seen him do it a couple of times this year already…but none at such an opportune time.

It is days like this that make me priud to be a part of this university. Heart. Hustle. Grit. Determination. Desire. Toughness. Team work. Leadership. Victorious!

Nice RPI notes. Add William and Mary and Davidson to the list of winners from yesterday on our OOC schedule. Now, W&M I couldn’t care less about, but Davidson will probably be important if they win their conference as expected. Either they will win their conference’s automatic bid, giving us a win against a team in the field, or they will end up on the bubble, where we could get a head-to-head edge if we hit the 7-9, 8-8 range in the conference.

It’s amazing how much better Gonzalez looked last night (among others) when ‘UNC’ and ‘Clemson’ aren’t sprawled across the opponents jerseys. Long run I think the schedule makers did us a favor with the tough early stretch IF (big if) improvement continues. This could help when the schedule becomes more favorable.

SFN: Davidson will end up being an NCAA Tournament team. That will be very nice. Both UNO and Rider could also make the dance. That would be very nice for us.

Great win!!! Now, I think we can win the regular season, the ACCT, and…

Sorry, just wanted to see how it feels to be the one who goes to total extremes after every win.

  13. tvbman 01/20/2008 at 9:31 AM #

I didn’t think we would win after losing the lead. Glad the team came back and showed some heart. Still have many troubles rebounding. I saw better boxing out, but then no one would go for the ball after they boxed out. The team has to do a better job at this. Still, so much more hustle than previous games. Costner was a good spark in the first half, but couldn’t defend to save his life in the second half. He would let his man catch too far low and then let him back in even closer.

Thank you team and thank you Gavin Grant.

After reading these other posts most are great but some more than mention Carolina and Arizona State. The paranoia slipping in. Herb Sendek is a complete class guy. I hope he wins every game they play (unless it’s against us or some other ACC schools.) We needed a new coach and he deserved better. If local papers want to write about him, who cares? The fixation on Carolina is a sickness stemming from their success and our lack of success. I used to be the same way but believe me, the air smells sweeter, colors are brighter, and food tastes better when you don’t care if Carolina wins or loses. As for OUR game, wow. Who are these people and what did they do with our little apathetic players? Also, Gavin Grant gave one of the best interviews on Raycom’s post game that I can remember.

  15. PAPacker 01/20/2008 at 10:20 AM #

What are you talking about? It is in our genetics to rejoice when Carolina loses. Let’s not go PC on a fansite.

  16. packgrad93 01/20/2008 at 10:21 AM #

Great win. We start 2 true frosh & have 6 new players to incorporate into the team. We should get better as the season plays out.

SFN: Why do you bother with the irrelevant pot-shots to our fans when you know that we are going to delete them and you are wasting your time with your baiting?

  17. GAWolf 01/20/2008 at 10:25 AM #

I owe Gavin Grant a theoretical message board”apology”. I’ve been talking poorly of his play and what I thought was a me-first attitude and mouthy approach to interviews. He’s a sharp kid and he’s playing his butt off… perhaps, until tonight, the only one there who was. The steal and layup was being in the right place at the right time, so I won’t praise that so much. Not to mention, JJ was there for the put back to put us even in that position in the first place. Or was it GG’s block on the other end that gave him a chance to miss the first layup that JJ put back.

The point being: but for GG’s don’t-give-up attitude and he wouldn’t have made the big block, he wouldn’t have cared/hustled enough to be in the right place at the right time to catch the bungled inbounds pass and put it back for a layup.

The kid plays hard and as someone else posted earlier he gave a great interview that we can only hope represents an attitude that will become contagious with this team.

  18. redfred2 01/20/2008 at 10:29 AM #

I don’t know why but in these parts at least, it seems that…

colorless + odorless + tasteless = complete class

You know I couldn’t let that just pass on by.

  19. GAWolf 01/20/2008 at 10:30 AM #

With that said… lest we not forget we beat Miami… at home. We’re supposed to win this gave.

  20. Sweet jumper 01/20/2008 at 10:31 AM #

My father went to State when Everett Case and the Wolfpack whipped Carolina’s butts regulary and with authority and when Duke was irrelevant. The hatred for the Heels goes way back–prior to the last 20 years. It is a natural instate rivalry mentality that has existed for several generations and will exist for many generations to come. Don’t let heel fans fool you. I know plenty who hope State never wins a game.

  21. StateFans 01/20/2008 at 10:33 AM #

^ Maybe so…but the IMPACT of the win is much greater this year than the historical ‘Miami’ win because of how well they have played thusfar.

Now we have to hope that they find a way to win enough games to make the NCAA Tournament.

  22. Sweet jumper 01/20/2008 at 10:40 AM #

Great win. Thrilling finish. Entertaining interviews by Sid, Gavin and BC on WRAL.com. Sid is finding his rotation as the ankles heal. I like the energy that Horner, Smith, Javi and Big Ben bring off the bench. We finally made some threes, hustled for the majority of the game and kept a positive attitude to the final buzzer. Rebounding still sucks, but maybe we can compensate in other areas while the coaches continue to seek improvement in that area.

  23. redfred2 01/20/2008 at 10:51 AM #

Unranked NCSU is SUPPOSED to win over #21?

  24. SuperStuff 01/20/2008 at 10:57 AM #

That McClinton kid was on fire in the second half. I’m so psyched for this team to get a win like that. Congratulations to them.

  25. beowolf 01/20/2008 at 11:13 AM #

Take stock. We have the record right now in the ACC that most would probable expect. The game margins, no. But it’s too early to jump off the cliff — or practice storming the court.
