Sporting News/850 Blog: You Stay Classy, UNC Fans

The UNC loss was obviously a huge surprise given how poorly Maryland has played this season. But perhaps more surprising was the reaction of their fans, which has been well documented over the weekend. This morning, however, we were sent a new-to-us video featuring audio of the fans yelling at the Terps after Hansbrough bricked the would-be game winner.

Listen for the rich girl yelling, “Go back to the ghetto!”: I’ll let you make your own judgments with regards to how offensive (and possibly racist) this slur is, although I’m fairly certain she meant it in the most hateful way possible.

Hat tip also to 850 the Buzz, which blogged on the topic this morning. Both local and national media looking at the underbelly of UNC athletics today!

BJD- He could have said -271.15 degrees Celsius. 🙂

Of course, now you’re talking about liquid helium temperatures and a crystat to regulate the temp. Probably best to just stick the bag on Pluto as opposed to spending all that money on cooling…

I love folks like Barry Saunders. I used to enjoy arguing with folks like this in the following manner: respond to their comments, hand the nearest person a piece of paper, then listen to the retort. The paper I handed to a bystander would usually contain their precise “arguments” and it would infuriate them to no end.

I did a similar thing with “brickyard Gary” if any of you recall him– it really irked the crap out of him too.

    Isn’t Kelvin a light measurement?

  4. gcpack 01/21/2008 at 3:24 PM #

Let’s stay on topic and drop the measurements debate.

What UNC fan sites have the most active blogs?

Would love to see what they are saying about their fan’s
    no class comment.

As far as Saunders goes, I too enjoy starting arguments with people of his ilk. It’s just too much fun to try to infuriate someone who is SO opinionated AND all too often wrong.

Just out of curiosity…how do they know the girl who made the comment was rich?

  7. RabidWolf 01/21/2008 at 3:27 PM #

perhaps the ghetto comment….a poor person wouldn’t have said something like that and intended it to be an insult.

  8. LRM 01/21/2008 at 3:33 PM #

Two of my best friends are Duke and Carolina fans. I sure hope most of the things we say to each other don’t make it onto youtube.

I think more needs to be said about this whole crying because your team lost spectacle and less about any supposed racist comments. The only other time I’ve seen students crying after a loss was at the Duke/UNC game in 2001 at Cameron. Little Dookies were shedding some major tears that night. I guess what I’m trying to say is that maybe Dook fans and Tarholes have more in common than we initially thought.

  10. gcpack 01/21/2008 at 3:49 PM #

LRM, this comment was not the result of a private conversation.

The UNC fan that made the ghetto comment yelled out in a public forum while live media were recording. That was her stupid timing in addition to being an insensitive remark. No one was recording personal comments or repeating an unvarified statement.

If this was something said at a table in a restaurant that someone overheard it would be different. For a school that cares more about image than substance you would think those in Baby Blue would have their etiquette marching orders engaged until they are in their cars with the doors locked.

This isn’t a case of Barry Saunders commenting on what was reported as said versus what everyone actually heard on ABC television.

Just goes to show that the capacity for crass behavior knows no single school allegiance, contrary to what the likes of Barry Saunders or other self-righteous morons think. As for what that waste of organic matter writes in his next column, I could give a rodent’s buttocks, as I decided years ago that there would never be anything written in his column worth reading….

  12. choppack1 01/21/2008 at 4:25 PM #

Beo – I think you’ve got it exactly right.

You see, when something like this happens in Raleigh, it’s just a sign that NC State fans are nothing but a bunch of dumb rednecks. When it happens in Chapel Hill, it’s a sign of how society in general, white folks in general, the “haves” in general, behave and is no way a reflection on that fine university.

I think the crying thing is really a seperate story in itself. I’m a huge sports fan, and they play way to big role in my life, but the crying after this game shows these people (and there was more than one) don’t know shit about the sport they are following.

This wasn’t UNC blowing a chance to clinch the World Series or the Super Bowl, this wasn’t an elimination game. This wasn’t the ACC Championship or even a game against their most hated rival. This was a regular season conference basketball game – that in and of itself – means nothing by itself right now. It won’t impact their national championship or ACC championship hopes.

I could see crying like this if this was college football – because unless you’re LSU – that’s it baby! These kids don’t have enough heart to be an NC State fan.

  13. blpack 01/21/2008 at 4:35 PM #

It was a bad day for baby blue all the way around and I predict more of the same.

If we had some of their fans we’d have severe dehydration in the student section by mid-season from all the tears. One sort of twisted benefit of being a State fan is you can learn to lose with some dignity and not take it too seriously. Hell, I was pretty much just reduced to laughing during the later stages of the Miami game Sat night.

One interesting angle on this ghetto issue is that I’m pretty sure it was directed at Vasquez. From the little bit of the game I saw it looked like he was really woofing it up and I think he was likely the target of any slurs. Not really sure if Slanders is an equal opp race-baiter or if he only looks for white-on-black issues. My guess is he won’t even mention it (nor should he, IMO).

I just heard about this for the first time right here. Funny, but one of the first things that came to mind was how a Barry Sanders type would interpret/spin this little item. Anyway, after reading down the thread, I think some other folks have already nicely summed up my thoughts exactly!

off topic, but has anyone seen the new espn the magazine? in the college basketball insider, near the back, doug gottlieb(sp?) says that an insider in the wolfpack program told him that some of the players are upset with coach lowes affection for jj hickson. the players want mccauley to get more playing time. interesting.

The thing I see in UNC fans is is that they REALLY thought they might go undefeated. That was why this one hurt so bad.

The Pack looked united on Saturday, so I am not trying to hear any jealousy issues. They got a team win in which several guys stepped up, and hopefully there’s more where that came from this week with GT in the RBC and at FSU.

Five hours on a cramped bus (and the three days of practices) after a second ass-whooping probably put some things into perspective for them. That might have been the basketball team’s version of the now fabled off week before ECU in football.

I was just about to disconnect from WFNZ online, but thought I’d listen to Roy and Woody propaganda. Roy sorta summed it up, “the last time I checked the Constitution, it didn’t say anything about Carolina winning every ball game”!

Wow, maybe it was written in the Bible????

Negative press in Chapel Hill;……could not happen to a better bunch!
I will love every minute of it!
    Keep talking tar heel fans.

  20. RAWFS 01/21/2008 at 7:45 PM #

State fans don’t cry. They get mad as hell and then they go on the Internet and get on talk radio and tell you about it.

Regarding Doug Gottlieb, I wouldn’t believe a word he says about NC State and after I read or listened to him, I’d double check my wallet to make sure that my Visa card was still there…just to be sure.

  21. smile102 01/21/2008 at 7:46 PM #

    Wulfpack:
“After the game, Roy mentioned that he had done a poor job of coaching his team the last couple of weeks. No mention of Maryland’s strong performance whatsoever.

    Classy.”

    Roy:
“Maryland was so much more aggressive, so much more competitive than we were.
you have to congratulate Maryland for making the plays. It’s a credit to this league and Gary [Williams] and the job that he’s done. and I thought his club played really really well today. They’re a good basketball team”

  22. JeremyH 01/21/2008 at 8:01 PM #

I didn’t know Doug Gottlieb cared enough about NC State to even make such a comment. God bless you my son. It could be true, and may even explain some things, but I have a feeling they are moving past that stuff.

  23. choppack1 01/21/2008 at 8:05 PM #

“State fans don’t cry. They get mad as hell and then they go on the Internet and get on talk radio and tell you about it.”

Ain’t that the truth – a diehard State fan does get angry as hell watching the game…then you start to give up – and like Miami in basketball or ECU in football – “Just when you think you’re out, they pull you back in!”

I have to think that if I was a Heels fan, my blood pressure would be very low. I mean, if that Maryland thing is the worst thing that’s going to happen to your team this year…f’in A!

The analogy to Chris Paul’s below the belt punch and one unclassy state fan’s remarks are not really close to the UNC tarbaby’s “ghetto” comments in several regards.
    1. Our unclassy fan was incensed as an obvious, illegal, and low character act by Paul and he yelled what he did. In other word’s he responded to an unacceptabel act, while the refs did nothing.
    2. State took alot of crap for it and Saunders, who wan’t even there, further distorted the facts by saying it was a whole lot of fans that participated and further didn’t report that other fans were booing the guy that made the remark.
    3. Wake Forest Unix then appears to be above it all. They responded by saying that it was regretabble and NC State was taking a lot of heat for it and they didn’t want to pile on. Not only did Wake not issue an apology and suspend Paul for a few more games, but they never admitted the gregious act. The Univeristy showed about as little class as Paul did, by kind of implying we were at fault for Paul’s classless behavior.

So, for this thing to come full circle,

    1. UNX must respond by saying she was goaded into it since Twerps players did—— or said——-.
    2. Barry, then writes an article that Blames it on the Twerps.
    3. The UNX coed, who is still upset and emotionally drained, ends up being the heroine of Barry’s story.

That way Maryland gets blamed for the whole thing, just like we did and (while Chris Paul walks away with a one game suspension but eveyone feeling sorry for him), the poor UNX coed has eveyone feeling sorry for her because Barry has come to her rescue.

Come to think of it, I’ve known girls to cry over less.
