Report from the Glaxo Invitational Tournament

I attended the first two days of the tournament during which I watched the first eight games of the main tournament. There was some excellent basketball being played by some future stars. You can click on the link below to read more information about the tournament. I am neither a scout nor a recruiting analyst but here are some of my observations of some of the teams and players. Please feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section as I enjoy reading about other’s experiences and opinions.

Schools
1) Word of God – They are an excellent team with a great coach. They have a top notch PG in John Wall and a talented young center in CJ Leslie. They have speed, skill and experience. Their main weakness is consistent outside shooting, but strangely a a zone does not work against them. They use patience and good passing to work the ball in to the heart of the zone to get easy shots (as opposed to shooting threes). If you have the chance to see them play then do yourself a favor and go. Their gym is small but the atmosphere is exciting and the basketball superb.

2) Kinston – They have a great coach and play hard. They are another fun team to watch. They have at least two players that will play division one basketball (Bo Ingram and Reggie Bullock).

3) Knightdale – This is the smallest team I have ever seen play (and this includes my private high school team from the 80s). They start 4 players 6 feet or shorter but they play as hard as any team I have watched. It is almost impossible not to pull for them. Their sparkplug was Antonio Moffit who is generously listed at 5 feet ten inches tall. Against Ravenscroft (who plays three players 6’10” or taller) he would drive the lane and somehow get his shot off. He was an amazing player to watch.

4) Taft – This is the second year in a row they have been in the tournament. They had more talent last year but a better team this year. They have a good PG in Larry Drew and a great shooter in Bryce Smith.

5) Ravenscroft – I wanted to see them play as they have 3 juniors 6’10” or taller but I was dissapointed. Their problems are 1) only one of the big men have any skill 2) they do not have a PG and 3) no one could hit a three. If they could get a top PG to play for them next year they could be a very good team.

Players
1) John Wall – This is probably the fastest player I have seen in more than 20 years of watching high school basketball. He has a great handle and body control. This allows him to beat his man off the dribble and get his shot off in traffic. He also has good court vision allowing him to get the ball to the right player at the right time. He loves to play defense and is a shut down defender. He plays hard and rarely leaves the game. He drives left almost exclusively and needs to work on his jump shot but is a talent that I would love to see play for NCSU. No matter what school he goes to he will be the best guard on the team.

2) CJ Leslie – He is a big, talented sophomore who has verbally committed to NCSU. He has some good moves around the basket, excellent athletic ability and works very hard on both ends of the court. He has a lot of potential and will improve (especially given the excellent coaching he is receiving). I expect his rankings will improve as he gets older. He will be a very good small or power forward, depending on how big he grows.

3) Larry Drew – I was anxiously awaiting the match up between Drew and Wall. I fully expected Wall to abuse Drew but was surprised at how well Drew fared. Wall was able to drive the lane pretty easily but Drew was also able to get past Wall who is a good defender. Drew is a pass first guard with good speed and a decent shot. My guess is he will average about 8-10 points and 5-6 assists for his college career. He will be a good guard and I would be thrilled if he would go to State instead of UNC.

4) Ryan Kelly – He is a 6’10” junior who plays for Ravenscroft. He has excellent moves, hands and body control around the basket. He was virtually unstoppable on the block. I would love to see how he does against someone his own height. He needs to put on some weight but will be an excellent PF at the next level.

5) Reggie Bullock – This sophomore plays at Kinston. He is a 6’6” guard that has a very nice, smooth stroke. He looks very comfortable shooting the ball and will be a very good player. He was not “THE” player on his team so I did not get a great feel for how good he will be.

Thanks for the info! Recruiting and high school BBall prospects (especially those considering NCSU) are two of my favorite topics to read about on SFN.

    me too tooyoung^

i hear Wall’s top 2 are memphis and kentucky. i hope sid has told Wall and every other top flight PG prospect in the country that the first one to sign with NCSU will get to start for 4 years in the acc on tobacco road.

    * The 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes are going to be HUGE for Coach Lowe and NC State. We will have a roster full of nice complementary players – Degand, Johnson, Mays, Williams, Thomas, Horner but will need some star power to put us over the top.

    * I think that a CJ Leslie, Ryan Kelly and Tracy Smith frontcourt for the post Costner-McCauley-Hickson era sounds pretty solid!

    * With Larry Drew’s commitment to UNC-CH, we can at least hope that John Wall would be intrigued by a potential rivalry with Drew while playing for a former NBA coach and college point guard who wears a National Championship ring.

    Thanks for the report.

I enjoy reading about how the players look….but couldn’t care less about most recruiting news which is usually just the latest utterances from 16/17 year old kids.

  5. Trip 01/02/2008 at 6:39 PM #

I agree completely with SFN, CJ Leslie is looking really good, Smith is solid from what I can tell (Except for that nasty FT shooting %)… I haven’t read a lot about Ryan so I can’t comment on him. I think Thomas will be an outstanding 2/3 when he comes back next year to replace Grant. He’s a quality kid who is playing for the love of the sport, not the NBA. I like what i’ve read about him, and the athletic ability that he has doesn’t hurt at all. Assuming his knee returns to 100% he’ll be in a lot of dunk contests.

As far as Wall, he’s without a doubt a “one and done.” While I’d like for Sid to recruit players who have at least a chance of staying 2 years, if he can land the #1 point guard in the nation, hell, go for it.

Now, in a perfect dreamworld, IF Hickson stayed all 4 years and Costner did as well… John Wall would be silly to NOT sign on the dotted line for us. Imagine the lineup that year… woah.

    ***NEWS FLASH***

Just in: Tyler Hansbrough got called for a foul.

  9. vtpackfan 01/02/2008 at 9:50 PM #

Kelly, Wall, and Leslie all play on the same AAU team (D1 Sports), so it will interesting to see if they stick together another summer or go seperate ways.

GSK is a nice tourney, but show me where Derrick Favors is playing and I’ll tell you where I hope Sid is sitting courtside. If there is one basket to load your eggs up in, it is he.

“State’s basketball program, ranked 13th, is worth $13.6 million. With expenses of only $3.1 million, the lowest of any team on our list, the NC State Wolfpack earned a profit of $7.9 million last season.”

And you thought WCU, Presbyterian, and NCCU was a great lead up to the ACC, wait till you see how we “profit” next year!

  11. highstick 01/02/2008 at 9:57 PM #

I’ll bet that foul on Hansborough was a mistake! Roy’s still claiming that it was unfair!

Did you check the same Forbes ranking of the football teams? Wow, great disparity in dollars and it was dominated by the SEC and Big Ten!

  12. packwolf90 01/02/2008 at 9:57 PM #

I’ve talked to Wall before and he seems like a good kid. His mom is a State fan so maybe we can snag him. Kentucky is high on the list because his best friend is probably going there. I plan on watching them play on the 11th then going to the watch State-Carolina on the 12th. can’t ask for much more than that

  13. sf59 01/02/2008 at 10:19 PM #

i doubt wall leaves the ACC or even the state…

  14. packpigskinfan23 01/03/2008 at 2:44 AM #

I think Wall will go somewhere other then NCSU. I hear people fuss all the time about recruits leaving their hometown that has a traditional sports program and do not understand how people cant see why a kid would would want to get away from home. If Wall came to NCSU he would have be about 10 miles away from home. Why would a kid in college want to do that?!

I hope my opinion differs from Wall’s, but doubt it.

I agree that is what he wants. IMO if he does not improve his jump shot and his inability to drive right he is not ready for the NBA. Of course when has that ever stopped anyone.

” I think that a CJ Leslie, Ryan Kelly and Tracy Smith frontcourt for the post Costner-McCauley-Hickson era sounds pretty solid!”

That is a very thin frontline. While long and athletic, I think they would get pushed around alot. CJ and Kelly could put on wieght and solve that problem though.

Anyone know anything about Lorenzo Brown, 5 star and showing high interest, according to Scout.

    Lorenzo?
    Brown?

Is he fated to come to State?

  18. Stoner 01/03/2008 at 8:50 AM #

We only have two scholarships open for 2009, unless someone leaves the program. Sid & Co. have to be careful about who gets a scholarship for the 2009 class. We can’t get everyone on our wish list.

As important as the 2009 recruiting class can be, we aren’t going to get a bumper haul of 4-5 recruits, who can transform the program. We don’t have enough open scholarships.

The 2010 class, I think, will have 4-5 scholarships open. It’ll be a more important recruiting class, than the 2009, simply because of the number of scholarships available and will determine the course of our basketball program for the near future.

  19. Trip 01/03/2008 at 12:53 PM #

I think it could be very possible that we could have more than 2 scholarships open for 09. The flying tomato may just drop out of the program, and another poster (JimValvano I think) mentioned that he thinks Javi will transfer. I’m starting to think this as well, especially with the fact that Johnson is performing much better than him. It’s not a strong possibility, but it could happen if he doesn’t improve over the year.

  20. packgrad93 01/03/2008 at 1:25 PM #

doubtful that Costner will be back, JJ for sure not.

  21. Sweet jumper 01/03/2008 at 2:10 PM #

I doubt that Costner is close to a lottery pick based on his performance this season. I feel like he will be here at least one more year. We might get lucky with JJ because of the depth of frontcourt upperclasmen and frontcourt one and dones this year. He might see that he could be a top 3-5 pick if he waits a year.

  22. packpigskinfan23 01/03/2008 at 2:27 PM #

only chance Costner isnt here next year is if he transfers or quits basketball. If he tries to go pro he will be in Europe by July.

  23. McPete 01/03/2008 at 2:37 PM #

We’re talking about the ’09 recruiting class (those who will show up August 2009 on campus). That means this season AND next season will be completed before then. JJ will be gone for sure, and just one transfer or early entry will make for 4 open schollys. plus, who leaves will have a great impact on recruiting needs, but shooting gaurd, point guard, and center/power forward will most likely be needs. SG, PF, and C – b/c of graduation/early entry, and PG – b/c of talent deficiencies.

  24. Noah 01/03/2008 at 2:43 PM #

Why would Gonzalez transfer? Dude was a top-200 recruit. He was lucky to get a scholarship from an ACC school. Why is he shocked that there are people better than him?

  25. packbackr04 01/03/2008 at 2:46 PM #

the only thing costner would be a lottery pick of would be the stay puff marshmallow man look alike contest. Costner has been nothing short of awful this yr. his d is lacksidaysical at best, his shot has struggled. he cant get to the rim becuase hes so fat. and hes too out of shape to run the court. no my friend. we will have costner ALL 4 YEARS.he isnt going anywhere except to Wendys
