Wolfpack Battles to Key Road Win! NC State 69 FSU 66

We closed the previous entry to open up a new one for the second half.

NC State led 36-31 at halftime based solely on a 17-0 run to end the first half. At halftime I wrote, ‘How crazy is it to say that NC State looked HORRIBLE except for that 17-0 run.’ I know that it is crazy…but it is true.

Unfortunately, the poor play that created that conclusion continued for the first 11 or 12 minutes of the second half before the Pack bore down with extra intensity and out-battled FSU for an extremely important ACC road win.

NC State’s ‘s win lifts the Pack to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. The Wolfpack’s RPI improved to #46 in the country while playing the nation’s 47th ranked strength of schedule. Both the Pack’s RPI and SOS will improve after playing Duke this week regardless of the out come. Forget the pain of Georgia Tech for a moment…how badly would you like that UNO and ECU game right now?

The following are some random running bytes that we live blogged during the game:

* I have never seen SLOWER whistles from an entire set of officials in my entire life. Literally 2 and 3 seconds late on almost every play. It was obvious how the officials were waiting to see if shots were going to fall before calling fouls. The whistle on Courtney Fells’ third foul (at the beginning of the second half) came after a 15 foot jump shot had time to make it to the basket, hit the rim and fall to the floor. Ridiculous.

* One would think that at some point the officials call FSU for some of these hacks and reach-ins against our guards. It has to be frustrating to play the first 33 minutes of the game allowing FSU’s guards to constantly reach and hack without the officials calling fouls only to have our guards’ tiny bumps and similar reaches suddenly become foulable offenses in the last seven minutes of the game.

* NOBODY on NC State’s basketball team actually boxes out the opponent in any way, shape, or form. Some players actually take the time to put their bodies in front of their opponent, but nobody actually boxes out their opponent. We couldn’t get luckier on some situations where JJ and our bigs are not boing out FSU knocks the ball out of bounds or bobbles it into our hands.

* While I am complaining about fundamentally simple items – we already have 2 or 3 legitimate fouls called against us today for moving screens. JJ Hickson gets at least one of these per game (that usually aren’t even close). How does this not get fixed and continue to happen in every single game?

* Gavin Grant has had a horrible game today. Bad decisions. Missed shots. Just totally out of sync. I wrote this BEFORE he fumbled a sure two points out of bounds on a wide open fast break with 11:19 to go.

* I gotta feel sorry for Dennis Horner. The kid cannot get a shot to fall. He’s getting decent looks and just not releasing the ball very smoothly.

* Not only does Brandon Costner make obvious and blatant mistakes on the floor – the poor guy makes them immediately upon entering the game. In the approximate minute that comprised Costner’s first defensive series of the the second half, he was charged with two fouls including bad reach-in because he was out of position BEFORE he allowed he failed to cut off a driver to the basket that resulted allowed an FSU slam.

* Since it is a stat that many people have been following as evidenced here – Costner entered the second half with 15:31 and State leading 40-38. In five minutes he committed three fouls, turned the ball over twice and didn’t score. But, when he left at the 9:47 mark the game was tied at 47.

* It amazes me that we choose to play such soft and lax defense that basically serves to lull our own team to sleep on the offensive end. On Wednesday against Georgia Tech and today against FSU – our best offense was produced by easy points on transition and finding rhythm from defense.

* Courtney Fells has not hit HUGE three pointers at the end of the last three games. Today’s was nothing short of a miraculous bank shot from 25 feet out. It is ok for Wolfpack fans to accept good luck whenever we get it.

* Coach Lowe has chosen to go with Javi Gonzalez over Marques Johnson at the end of each of the last two nail biters. No doubt that Gonzalez’s shooting advantage over Johnson has been a key part of the decision.

    My first post on Statefansnation.

This was definately a huge road win for us. Not winning at Duke will make this an even bigger W for us. The team actually played with defensive intensity today through spurts, but the mental lapses still plagued us. I’m pulling for Grant as he was off-target for much of the game. Thrilled to see that Costner didn’t get the start. We need to see more of that. Hickson had limited oppurtunities today with the ball under the basket, but he made the most of them, especially at the end. The PG play is also improving [with nowhere to go but up since the carolina game] as Johnson showed today that he CAN shoot but needs to do it more if he’s going to be effective and force the defense to respect him. I’m starting to be impressed with Gonzalez as he has added some nice passes to his game. He is becoming more and more wiling to shoot, and he’s shown he has a nice stroke. I would think that with experience he will become more consistent and clutch. And Fells has been playing out of his mind lately, and he will need to continue shooting at a high percentage if we have any aspirations of a NCAA bid.

Most importantly, today everyone on the court [minus #33] played like they really wanted the W. They could’ve packed it in when FSU took a 12-point lead in the first and another lead in the second. My hat goes off to them for sticking it out, but we have to continue to see effort and imporvement if we hope make the NCAA tourney voters forget about the L’s to New Orleans, ECU and the 30-point 1st-half egg we laid in Chapel Hill.

This W keeps my faith alive for at least another week. GO PACK!!!

It hasn’t been near that long since we won there…but I can’t remember when. It has been a little while though.

I loved the defensive intensity, especially on the perimeter. Lots of hustle and diving for (and getting) loose balls. Our PG play today was better. Marques hit a 3 and Javi made some big free throws. If either of these guys can get some real confidence in a shot, a lot of things will fall into place.

Its a win on the road in the ACC, and I’ll take it.

Off topic, but how is a player giving a slight elbow bump to an official a two game suspension, but a ref reaching around and touching a player on the butt appropriate?

  5. Sweet jumper 01/26/2008 at 5:25 PM #

Any road win in the ACC is a good win. I only saw the last 12 minutes, so I basically did not see Costner on the court. We seemed to have good energy with Ben, JJ, GG, Javi and Fells. Javi seems to continue to develop confidence and court presence. Did Tracy Smith play today? I hope Fells’ touch from 3 land continues against Dook.
Good win. Rest up for Dook. Javi, put in your earplugs and know that the pressure you have experienced at UNX and Clemmon U is not close to what you will experience at Dook. Stay tough, play smart and don’t take any #@*& from Paulus. Go PACK!

it’s so hard to watch this team play, at least we have this support group.

Her: “Honey, why are you on the computer AGAIN!? What are you doing?”

Me: (thinking never mind that I do this for a living) “Nothing…”

Her: “I bet you’re on that STATEFANS AGAIN!”

    Me: “Yep.”

Her: “I just KNEW IT!” She leaves the room.

Well, kicking and screaming in a conniption fit gets the other guy a technical foul in this league (if you wear dark blue.) What do you expect? 😉

Here’s aquote form another sport that I assert is appropriate to Wolfpack basketball:

Carolina Hurricanes Care: What tips do you have for handling pressure during big games?
Tim: Don’t think. Just don’t think at all. Just play the game, you’re here for a reason. You know your job every single night, and the more you think the more you’ll get yourself in trouble. Just play hockey, know your job and continue to do that consistently.

“Greywolf, sorry, but you are wrong.”

    redfred2:
Thanks for pointing that out. I was wrong once before when I thought I was wrong and I wasn’t. 😉 But I do think you mis-read something. I was quoting another post and only asked a sarcastic question related to the quoted text. Not much to be right OR wrong about.

I think we may have gotten them in 1995(?) whenever Gaudette was coaching.

  11. redfred2 01/26/2008 at 6:30 PM #

Greywolf, that was my post you first quoted there, that’s why I responded, but I did mis-read your response though. But it doesn’t really matter either way, if I said you were wrong, then… 😉

This is kinda hard to say, but I hope Huggie Bear and the WVU Mountaineers beat the pooh out of Georgetown.

Happy we won. If we ever learn how/decide to box out, we could be a midlevel ACC team. As it is, we might win a handful of games the rest of the season. NIT if we’re lucky.
I’m really happy with what I’m seeing out of Javi. He’s taken a lot of crap here (deserved, with the way he played), but he is improving. He’s a guy physically out of his league in the ACC, but he’s finding a way to contribute and working hard. I loved the two times he took his man off the dribble toward the hole and drew the fouls for tree throws.
I actually saw Costner hustle for one rebound, and pretend to hustle on defense once. Other than that, he’s a disaster. And to think, less than one year ago he was the Everett Case Award winner. Yeah, I know he didn’t actually get it, but we all know why that is.

Just looking around and noticed AOL has a nationwide list of ten most disappointing NCAA BB players so far. Care to which players is sitting as #1 on that list? Also who is listed as the #6 most disappointing player out of a list which contains players from all over the nation?

  15. JeremyH 01/26/2008 at 7:41 PM #

considering we gelled enough towards the end of the season to be “good”, games like these are so crucial to having even bubble hopes. that in mind, it is so very scary how badly we needed this game and how lucky we were to come away with it. a Fells steal and a Fells bankshot saves the entire day. Horner is still my favorite player, even though he is a little cold right now, but Fells is coming in at a close second right now. Go Fells. There is no denying that there has been progress, that is what we sorely needed. Brandon–figure out what it is you need to do to contribute to this team while you deal with your slump, and focus on that for now.

Forgot to add off the box score: Turnovers, Gonzalez 1, Johnson 1.

Look out ” “‘s Sun Devils are leading #6 WSU by two, 26-24 at the half. AND…the Sun Devils only took seven 3 point shots in the first half, AND…they only made one of those three’s.

Just thought that might make at least some NC State fan’s happy for awhile anyway.

  19. MatSci94 01/26/2008 at 8:34 PM #

“Sun Devils are leading #6 WSU by two, 26-24 at the half”

But ASU is now down 10 after a 15-0 scoring run by WSU over a 6 minute stretch at the beginning of the 2nd half.

  20. redfred2 01/26/2008 at 8:42 PM #

^ASU is 1-14 from three point land. Damnit, what’s wrong with the big guys, they’ve got to hit those shots.

  21. redfred2 01/26/2008 at 8:58 PM #

Well ASU lost by 1 point, 56-55, in a good effort. Believe it or not I wasn’t pulling against them, but that that was really hard to watch on the espn scoreboard. I was slamming on the refresh key and I kept thinking my computer had locked up.

WVU up one over Gtown with 39 seconds left

    bTheredterror-
I think you’re referring to the 95-96 season when Coach K was out and Duke was terrible? They still won that year, even though we should have. I can’t remember all the details, but I was shooting (photographer) for the Technician and got to sit court side during that game and remember we definitely lost. It was quite disappointing as I remember we had a very good chance…

  24. Primewolf 01/26/2008 at 10:40 PM #

I have come to the conclusion that we will not actually beat an ACC team with any margin this year.

Our wins will all be close and just as easily losses. Today’s win could just as easily be swapped for GT loss.

I guess that is the way it is when your offense is dysfunctional and your defense lacks intensity for much of the game.

Our players always hit a wall at about the 10-12minute mark in the second half. We go lax on D and stand around on O.

I don’t know why I continue to get upset with the way we attack a zone. We try to pass it around the horn like a high school team, over and over again. There are no cuts, no screens, or overloads. We pass it around the horn as if someone on the horn knew how to get a shot off quickly. And of course there is no one to rebound.

Today proved that there are many inept teams in the ACC. I doubt if the conference gets 5 bids.

94-95 was the year K was out and we swept Duke that year only to lose to them in the LRI. Before that we last won in Cameron in 1988.
