Wolfpack Battles to Key Road Win! NC State 69 FSU 66

We closed the previous entry to open up a new one for the second half.

NC State led 36-31 at halftime based solely on a 17-0 run to end the first half. At halftime I wrote, ‘How crazy is it to say that NC State looked HORRIBLE except for that 17-0 run.’ I know that it is crazy…but it is true.

Unfortunately, the poor play that created that conclusion continued for the first 11 or 12 minutes of the second half before the Pack bore down with extra intensity and out-battled FSU for an extremely important ACC road win.

NC State’s ‘s win lifts the Pack to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. The Wolfpack’s RPI improved to #46 in the country while playing the nation’s 47th ranked strength of schedule. Both the Pack’s RPI and SOS will improve after playing Duke this week regardless of the out come. Forget the pain of Georgia Tech for a moment…how badly would you like that UNO and ECU game right now?

The following are some random running bytes that we live blogged during the game:

* I have never seen SLOWER whistles from an entire set of officials in my entire life. Literally 2 and 3 seconds late on almost every play. It was obvious how the officials were waiting to see if shots were going to fall before calling fouls. The whistle on Courtney Fells’ third foul (at the beginning of the second half) came after a 15 foot jump shot had time to make it to the basket, hit the rim and fall to the floor. Ridiculous.

* One would think that at some point the officials call FSU for some of these hacks and reach-ins against our guards. It has to be frustrating to play the first 33 minutes of the game allowing FSU’s guards to constantly reach and hack without the officials calling fouls only to have our guards’ tiny bumps and similar reaches suddenly become foulable offenses in the last seven minutes of the game.

* NOBODY on NC State’s basketball team actually boxes out the opponent in any way, shape, or form. Some players actually take the time to put their bodies in front of their opponent, but nobody actually boxes out their opponent. We couldn’t get luckier on some situations where JJ and our bigs are not boing out FSU knocks the ball out of bounds or bobbles it into our hands.

* While I am complaining about fundamentally simple items – we already have 2 or 3 legitimate fouls called against us today for moving screens. JJ Hickson gets at least one of these per game (that usually aren’t even close). How does this not get fixed and continue to happen in every single game?

* Gavin Grant has had a horrible game today. Bad decisions. Missed shots. Just totally out of sync. I wrote this BEFORE he fumbled a sure two points out of bounds on a wide open fast break with 11:19 to go.

* I gotta feel sorry for Dennis Horner. The kid cannot get a shot to fall. He’s getting decent looks and just not releasing the ball very smoothly.

* Not only does Brandon Costner make obvious and blatant mistakes on the floor – the poor guy makes them immediately upon entering the game. In the approximate minute that comprised Costner’s first defensive series of the the second half, he was charged with two fouls including bad reach-in because he was out of position BEFORE he allowed he failed to cut off a driver to the basket that resulted allowed an FSU slam.

* Since it is a stat that many people have been following as evidenced here – Costner entered the second half with 15:31 and State leading 40-38. In five minutes he committed three fouls, turned the ball over twice and didn’t score. But, when he left at the 9:47 mark the game was tied at 47.

* It amazes me that we choose to play such soft and lax defense that basically serves to lull our own team to sleep on the offensive end. On Wednesday against Georgia Tech and today against FSU – our best offense was produced by easy points on transition and finding rhythm from defense.

* Courtney Fells has not hit HUGE three pointers at the end of the last three games. Today’s was nothing short of a miraculous bank shot from 25 feet out. It is ok for Wolfpack fans to accept good luck whenever we get it.

* Coach Lowe has chosen to go with Javi Gonzalez over Marques Johnson at the end of each of the last two nail biters. No doubt that Gonzalez’s shooting advantage over Johnson has been a key part of the decision.

Great win. My gut was right once again.

Now looking forward to DOOK. We have no chance playing the way we have all season. Jimmy-V had KRAZEWSKIS number. I hope Sid remembers. You beat DOOK with dribble penetration. That means we should play a line up of Fells, Gonzalas, Ferguson, Horner, and Williams. Yeah you know I’m right.

P.S. I do have 72 ounces of Guinness in my belly.

    Go State.

Dr B, I don’t think anyone in Durham wants to hear that kind of talk right now. Maybe a former DA, but no one else.

^sorry, i meant that game is on espn if anyone is interested in seeing a close ending 🙁

Still too many mistakes from inexperience or whatever but again I see some progress. It is easy to forget how bad this team was during Atsur’s absence last season. Which once again points to the improtance of the PG position.
We now have seen two games in a row where Gonzales (otherwise known as that old baseball player) showed improvement. Is he where we need him to be? No but we are beginning to see improvement in his play.
Hickson is also beginning to learn what playing ACC basketball is all about.
    Small steps, small steps.

that kid for OSU is an idiot. 3-ptr when you need the deuce. Pump fake and go. That was stupid. Good game though.

wern, good call and funny stuff. Just take care of that beer laden gut, we might need to call upon it later on.

I actually got an email back from that Winston-Salem guy apologizing for calling Javi by the wrong name. I’m sure he sent out 1,000 emails saying apologizing for that one.

I guess By this point it is too late to expect “pretty” basketball. It’s not fun to watch but if they can’t play pretty they better play as ugly as possible and hope they get in the heads of opponents.

I do wonder what Costner’s problem is. Suspect it is primarly a conditioning and confidence issue stemming from his off-season surgery. Combine that with his seemingly laconic personality and it is understandable that his struggles continue. Here’s hoping that he can shake it off.

Go Brandon! We are pulling for you!

“That’s a damn fine win in my book! Go Pack! Maybe we can keep it under 20 in Durham.”

Let me tell you something about Duke. They have been street-ballin lately. Have you seen the VTech game? I have a post earlier in this thread regarding that. There is no way, given the officials primitive love for Duke, that we can defeat them. Demarcus Nelson is on a mission to let everyone know that he is “for real” dawg. Did you see the way he manhandled Deron Washington in that game? Duke is “bout it bout it” now. They ain’t taking no crap! They are starting to gain “urban-cred”. Gerald Henderson is now ’bout gaining “street-cred”.You can’t beat someone like that. When you’re allowed to slap people around like Ike on Tina Turner, and the officials turn a blind-eye to it, there’s no stopping a situation like that. Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer will get by with slapping at Gonzalez’s wrists during the game, and when Javi drives the ball in, Duke will slap the wrist, steal the ball, and take it to the other end of the court for an easy layup. Javi will look at the offical, but no response. This will happen play after play after play. We will need to demonstrate that physical toughness that Washburn & Shackleford taught us in the early-mid 80’s. We will need Gugliotta and Del Negro to pull some stops for us in the italian Mafia. Even if we get that, we can’t beat Duke unless we get unbiased officating. And what is the likelyhood of that?

By the end of the season our PG’s won’t be the worst in the league, and they probably were at the beginning. Most of the bad passes do seem to come from others. Fells is good for at least two a game. They just look like lazy, about-to-be-highlight-reel-dunks the moment they leave our hands sometimes and I don’t understand why we don’t learn not to do that.

But gutsy play today. Ugly sometimes, but we battled a guard-oriented team on the road and won. Big, big difference between 2-3 and 1-4.

  12. Greywolf 01/26/2008 at 4:11 PM #

“Fells says “I don’t want to be selfish, I want to play within the offense.””

“I would tell Fells to get his ASS out there and shoot, force anything and everything that he wants to. I would also tell him that it is imperative that he takes it inside and pressures the defense at least once every third time down.”

What would you tell the team when they began to stand around and watch Fells:
    Get involved in the offence?
    Box out?
    Show some energy?
    Hustle?
I guess I’m grateful we bloggers don’t get to tell Fells anything about how to play.

^The late calls today, on both ends of the court, could you ever in your wildest dreams, imagine calls like those going against a Duke basketball team? No way in HELL.

  14. Bynum State Fan 01/26/2008 at 4:14 PM #

I say we bench our starters in the Cameron Indoor game. If you have seen how Duke has been playing lately, you will know what I mean. They get away with physically trying to injure careers and reputations now. Duke is wanting that Detroit Piston bad-boy reputation and man, do they ever have it! They be for real dawg! You don’t want to mess with any of them Duke boys. The last few games have been dog fights “Please don’t be angry Michael Vick”. Duke is looking to let you know they are fed up! Coach K is trying to get young ballers out there to know that if you are “for real” and “bout’it bout’it” then Duke is the program for you. Let’s make sure none of our primary players get in any altercation with Duke players, if for no other reason than to salvage the rest of the ACC games. It is worth losing that Duke game to ensure our starters are healthy and able to play the remainder of the schedule. If we start’em against Duke, that might not be possible.

Rochester – about the passes I was thinking the same thing. The thought was – our PG’s aren’t the problem when it comes to TOs and passing. Fells, Horner, Grant and Costner all had some really bad passes today. Even McCauley had some brain farts. I honestly believe that right now, Javy is the most mentally sharp guy we have.

Can someone explain to me what in the hell TV Teddy was doing pointing at his watch with time running down on FSU’s last drive.

Douglas was dribbling the ball when the shot clock ticked around 10 sec, where most teams start their final play, and TV Teddy emphatically starts pointing at his watch toward Douglas.

The only thing I know that sign to mean is you had better be aware of the time. Why would an official be signaling that?

  17. VaWolf82 01/26/2008 at 4:21 PM #

Wins have a way of covering up our deficiencies.

Not exactly. Wins have a way of making many fans IGNORE the deficiencies.

  18. bTHEredterror 01/26/2008 at 4:21 PM #

I actually thought they improved in spurts on defense, and you saw the results with the transition game. There are signs, and there was some improved effort. I am surprised we saw Ferg and didn’t see Tracy Smith. We battled the “#1 FT shooting team in America” to a draw I think, and we won the TO battle 14-15!

  19. redfred2 01/26/2008 at 4:22 PM #

Greywolf, sorry, but you are wrong. Fells did make an ABSOLUTE prayer at the end there, but doesn’t account for an entire basketball game where he DID disappear AGAIN for a stretch in the game. Fells is our most potent weapon, along with JJ, who is constantly double teamed and denied the ball.

Have you ever wondered why we spurt enough to stay in the game but we can’t ever seem to create any working margins?

It is because we are not playing on all cyclinders, and that is because some players do not stay involved like they should.

  20. Rick 01/26/2008 at 4:25 PM #

Something is going on withe Costner. He is just not the same player and his summer injury is not the problem. It appears he truly does not care if we win or lose.

He has gone from a possible draft choice to the bench in a few months. IMO if he had burned his redshirt year I think he would leave. Something is wrong there.

  21. redfred2 01/26/2008 at 4:31 PM #

chop, I agree, Javi is evolving, and rapidly. He may not be a confident scorer, yet, I hope, but it’s looking like he may have the right attitude to motivate and lead the team.

  22. travelwolf 01/26/2008 at 4:37 PM #

we are so talented – except at the most important spot – PG. One big problem in the 2nd half was that Hickson didn’t get the ball enough. Let’s hope that our PG’s continue to evolve quickly. if FSU hadn’t had a mental lapse at the end of the 1st half, the game would have been all theirs. Our offense is so simple – it looks like other teams are figuring it out.

costner seems to be uncoordinated… why is the 64k question.

  23. Texpack 01/26/2008 at 4:46 PM #

We are now 1-1 in games with crucial banked in 3 pointers in the final minute.

This team needs to take the opportunity break to overcome our 1/2 court offensive issues.

Gonzales is playing with much more confidence.

Dennis Horner actually shot the ball today instead of giving the Damien Wilkens ball fake every time.

If Sidney can get Costner going we will become a very good team, until then we will be a good team.

Grant had a horrible game for the most part and we still won.

Any road conference win is a good one.

  24. turnoffthetv 01/26/2008 at 4:47 PM #

“When was the last time we won in Durham?”

I’m gonna say 1988 with “fire and ice”. Not sure though. thats the last time I can recall.

  25. graywolf 01/26/2008 at 4:51 PM #

A Win is a Win any way you get it and i’ll take this one any day.
I think defense won the game in the end.

I really hope JJ Hickson stays two years!!

But, I beginning to think he may be gone after one due to improvement.
