Inside State’s 6-Game Win Streak

Two general articles out there today to share. This one from Ed Hardin pretty much just rambles about the entire league but has this observation of NC State:

N.C. State has been an out-and-out flop with no one bringing the Wolfpack along. Dissension and uninspired play, something Sidney Lowe simply must rectify in the coming weeks, have thwarted the team’s early development. Look for State to get back its swagger and emerge as the conference’s third-best team, but the Pack has to do it in January or it probably will be too late.

As easy as it is to accept, I don’t fully subscribe to the transitive theory of comparing scores of third party opponents. There are way too many variables involved and every game is different.

By Andrew Jones of Wilmington Star

N.C. State has won six consecutive basketball games. But what has the streak proven about the Wolfpack, if anything?

Wins are wins, some will argue, but how a team plays is also important, especially if shoring up some previous problem areas are a must as conference play nears.

State has shown a few glimpses of being a competitive team come ACC time, but more often than not, the Wolfpack isn’t even an ordinary team despite its inflated 10-3 record.

This isn’t saying State can’t string together some quality ACC wins and work itself into the NCAA tournament. But if the selections were announced today, there’s no way on earth the Pack would be included, especially after another poorly played victory over a lousy team Saturday.

A little of subject, but I am sure some of you saw the Clemson / UNX game last night. What was up with the Clemson Coach stealing Coach Lowe’s team blazer for the home game?

  2. jbpackfan 01/07/2008 at 9:46 AM #

I am so sick and tired of Andrew Jones. He has written this article 3 or 4 times this year already, and its getting old really. NC State sucks, yada yada yada. Same with Adam Gold’s comments. I really don’t want to hear it. I think they’ll do fine in conference play.

  3. RAWFS 01/07/2008 at 10:04 AM #

I wish I could be as confident, but with no perimeter game and six games against Clemson, UNC and Duke, a winning conference record will be hard to get to for this team.

  4. zahadum 01/07/2008 at 10:11 AM #

Given that our current RPI is 60, ‘no way on earth’ is definitely rather hyperbolic on Jones’ part.

Presumably a team would improve from playing a tough schedule. We played Davidson last after close games against Duke and UNC, and we played the Blue Hose last after respectable showings against Clemson and Wake Forest. It makes sense that those two teams would come into the NC State game feeling confident and with a more developed idea of what they are doing, what is effective, and what it takes to win against quality ACC teams. So, I’m not worried that our score was closer than their scores against their other ACC opponents. In particular, I think the Davidson win was pretty impressive, as they were ripe for a breakthrough victory. I also believe our win over the Hall is their only home loss.

That said, posters have remarked since game 1 that “defensive intensity” was lacking, and that continues to the be the case. Jay Bilas called it out in his article predicting the Pack to the NIT. We need to put more pressure on the other team defensively, and we’ll look 100 times better.

The season is young. It’s reasonable to note some areas for improvement, but nobody should make the mistake of assuming that this season will go one way or the other. Personally, I think the UNC game couldn’t come at a better time, because you know we’ll be fired up to start the ACC season.

This “article” is worthless. I could fart out a more coherent conclusion.

I will wait until we plahy some ACC games before I make a decision on this team.

  7. PAPacker 01/07/2008 at 10:17 AM #

They are bad. How much of this can you blame on not having an Atsur who functioned as a floor leader? With three point guards on the staff (I include Gainey)how can they not be more prepared coming on to the court? Maybe State needs to significantly upgrade its schedule so that the players have a higher standard to aspire to from the get go. It seems silly to have to even think this way, but here we are. I really, really hope Mays brings a “get and keep your a**es in gear” mentality to the PG position. I don’t see Javi/Marques doing that any time soon.

  8. PAPacker 01/07/2008 at 10:18 AM #

If I were Lowe, I would run them till they vomit to make sure they play solidly against NC Central. But would that help?

  9. PackerInRussia 01/07/2008 at 10:21 AM #

This is the saddest looking 6-game winning streak you could have.

  10. Girlfriend in a Coma 01/07/2008 at 10:25 AM #

    This just in.

The retarded kids from yesterday’s halftime scrimmaged our guys this morning and took us to OT. Fells couldn’t stay with his guy and Costner consitently got beat to rebounds. Javi was bamboozled by their zone defense sagging in on Hickson.

For concrete reasons our dynamic is such that we struggle to *dominate* the gimme games on the schedule, which oft include the midget bomb squads. Throw in there the gimme teams are no longer pushovers and the mid-majors continue to emerge (further placing stress upon the concept that 8-8 in the conference gets a bid). I think we were all very pleased with our win against Seton Hall (away) which I think reminded us the reason we were pre-season picked in the top25 and 3rd in our conference. Unfortunately, the WCU and PC games reminded us we are not that projected team yet (i.e. sleeping giant). I have no reason to think UNC will blow us out or that we will give a strong showing. I really don’t know which NC State will show up. I dually think it’s absurd to now project we make the NCAAs or not (but I guess Jay Bilas needs to earn a paycheck, no?) Also, I certainly hope they don’t overlook their Wednesday game, else they will lose. As an aside, one major difference from last year–besides the over-discussed and publicized lack of strong, leadership-like point guard play–is that Brandon Costner was in many ways our “go-to” guy last year, and he is working out his struggles now. His play over the conference schedule is going to be a crucial key to where we land.

  12. LRM 01/07/2008 at 10:37 AM #

We’re halfway through the season. And the “easy” part ends Wednesday. We look like circus monkeys moving the ball up court, we don’t hustle, we can’t catch passes, we don’t rebound, we don’t move well without the ball (or with the ball), we’re not physical, we don’t shoot well and we don’t defend well.

I hope I’m really wrong, but I don’t see any indications that this team will win more than a few conference games.

  13. RAWFS 01/07/2008 at 10:42 AM #

The only saving grace is that with the exception of Michigan State, they’ve played well when they’ve played quality teams.

What worries me are brain-fart let’s take half the game off efforts against GT or VT that costs us totally necessary games. Given that wins against Duke, UNC and Clemson are going to be hard to come by and therefore cannot be counted upon, we need to win 9 of the other 10 games to rest easy on Selection Sunday.

  14. packbackr04 01/07/2008 at 10:46 AM #

does anyone know how GT fared against PC yesterday?

  15. newt 01/07/2008 at 10:48 AM #

As a coach, there are two approaches to getting the most out of a team:

    1 – Ride their asses.
2 – Build a family that cares about each other.

    Which way does Lowe coach?

    How did Valvano coach?

  16. Sam92 01/07/2008 at 10:54 AM #

it *is* good to get a win, but scoring 50 on the blue hose isn’t exactly impressive either. perhaps the team will rise to the level of the competition in the acc schedule.

  17. Stoner 01/07/2008 at 10:56 AM #

Well this is purely third party conjecture, but maybe it’ll boost folks spirits going into conference play:

Villanova beat Pitt. Pitt beat Duke. We beat Villanova.

We are currently 3-0 against the Big East. Hopefully that’ll count for something come selection Sunday.

We have a good win, against a ranked team – Villanova – already and a solid road win against another Big East team in Seton Hall.

I’m not going to assume our play against PC is indicative of what this team is capable of because we did play better than that during the season.

WCU was a classic “trap” game, in my opinion, because we came off of three games, which we needed to win, and had a mental let down.

What gives me some home for optimism is we’ve improved in rebounding, compared to the start of the year. We’re better at breaking a full court press, than we were at the beginning of the year. We can be an effective, though streaky, three point shooting team.

We’re 10-3 with a win over a top 25 ball club, and a quality road win. We have three bad losses (MSU was a bad loss because of how poorly we played) but we’ve shown improvement since then.

It’s too early for me to give up on the season yet. I’m nervous as hell about what NCSU team will show up on any given day, but I’m not hopeless about the season.

    *****************************

Brandon Costner was in many ways our “go-to” guy last year

Does anyone know what kind of knee injury he had over the summer and how it is effecting him? Coach Lowe mentioned it once on his radio show, earlier in the year and the radio announcers mentioned he was wearing a knee brace, for either the WCU or PC game.

  18. GAWolf 01/07/2008 at 11:00 AM #

I saw where the PC/Tech game was pretty close. Ten maybe? 15? The mention I saw on the news/ESPN (cant remember which and I payed very little attention to it) seemed to hint that it was closer than the score.

  19. primacyone 01/07/2008 at 11:03 AM #

We’ve had a pretty dang good outcome considered we have a 3* FRESHMAN point guard and he is the second starting (in all realtity – FRESHMAN) point gurard this season.

We have less problems now than at the beginning of the season. Oblivsouly there is some trial and error and experimentation going on. There is a reason Lowe and Co. are still recruiting guards hard and heavy.

  20. primacyone 01/07/2008 at 11:16 AM #

Of course, we could start the ACC 0-6. That’s a real possiblity.

anyone else see how Chris warren is playing down at Ole miss. would be interesting for SFN or Section6 to run an analysis of how he has fared vs our PGs to fate. for anyone who hasnt seen. ole miss is 13-0 and is ranked #18 in the country. I heard some of the talking heads speaking about how big Chris Warren had been for them, and i think he ahs built a pretty impressive stat line. would like to see it if Noah or someone could finsd it. as a reminder, Warren is the kid Sid recruited and then i think kinda let him go after he got Javi,,, if my memory serves me right.

let’s get a win wednesday night and get to 7 W’s in a row … hopefully it will be a convincing win if we can get it

i fully believe this team could get off to a rough start in conference play but CAN make a charge late … we are seeing improvement (just not against zone defenses 🙂 )

i think the first 8 conf. games may determine the team’s fate this season … starting with FOUR of SIX conf. games on the ROAD (THANKS, acc office) – if we could somehow scrape to 4-4 or even 3-5 in the first 8 games of conference play i BELIEVE we can/will improve enough to make a surge over the final 8 conf. games … hopefully this will be enough to get us in the NCAA or put us in position with a strong conference tournament showing

“dissension” is a pretty strong word … let’s hope it never really existed or if it did that it is completely gone … don’t like that word

  23. highonlowe 01/07/2008 at 11:37 AM #

If I were coach Lowe, I’d at least consider playing Gavin at the point again. He’s cleaned up his turnovers this year and he would serve as a much needed penetration and 3-pt threat when facing the zone, (which we’ll face every night until we prove we can bust it).
Plus, it’d allow us to get GG, Fells, Ben, Cost, and JJ all on the floor at the same time.

I doubt we’ll see it, but its worth exploring.

“A little of subject, but I am sure some of you saw the Clemson / UNX game last night. What was up with the Clemson Coach stealing Coach Lowe’s team blazer for the home game?”

^this is blowing up a little … purnell did it when clemson played south carolina as well (a rivalry game) and lorenzo romar of washington had his bright purple blazer on when the huskies hosted washington state over the wknd. (or last week) … sidney really started something last season … and these guys all know each other so i’m sure they told sidney to look out for their respective jackets this season while at a coaches’ convention or something … i think it’s really cool that he set a trend like that 🙂

  25. packbackr04 01/07/2008 at 11:45 AM #

as long as sid gets the props for it.

i just chkd Chris Warrens stat line…

he is playing 28 mins a game
    avg 15.2 pts per game
    avg 5.7 assists per game
and he is shooting .423 FG%

way too early to second guess, but it looks like Sid might have missed on this one. cause we could sure use a little of those stats this yr.. especially when compared to javis stat line
