Pug Suey! Arkansas Pulls a Coup

Everyone who laughed at Arkansas’ coaching search may want to chime in with something here as it looks like the Razorbacks have landed the Atlanta Falcons’ Bobby Petrino.

Bobby Petrino resigned as Atlanta Falcons coach on Tuesday, the team said. He lasted only 13 games with the NFL team.

Sources have told Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com that Petrino will be taking the head coaching job at the University of Arkansas.

Man, those folks in Auburn are going to be jealous.

I found some similarities in the Arkansas football search and the NC State basketball search of a couple of years ago. In the end, the Hogs got a star from the pro ranks on their (publicly) third swing of the bat while NC State wasn’t quite able to make the same connection with our behind the scenes conversations with Mike Montgomery.

Then again, who knows what results can happen when your Athletics Director chooses to play an active role in the search and chooses to personally call and attempts to sell candidates on the opportunity.

“So you are saying the truth isn’t an absolute?”

That isn’t what I was saying.

But to answer THAT question, truth is always going to be subjective. There may be such a thing as the objective truth, but it lies beyond the knowledge horizon of any of our minds. We’re stuck with the subjective truth which is forced to filter through our own personal history, the limitations of our own imagination, etc. We might agree on certain things and call them universal, but they are still subjective.

In other words, I have no idea if the color green looks to me the way it does to you. However, it appears that our minds interpret that wavelength of light in a similar fashion. But at the end of the day, I have to take your word for it.

(If you doubt this, ask a schizophrenic about it. Or ask someone who has synesthesia.)

What I was saying above was that the truth isn’t something many people want anything to do with. What they want is reassurance.

“The first Panthers coach in Charlotte, I just drew a blank on his name, was rumored to spend 3-4 nights a week at the stadium during the season. Probably did wonders for his marriage to the flight attendant wife.”

There is a phenomenon in pro sports where the divorce rate spikes once the player or coach retires.

Turns out the two people couldn’t stand one another and they realized that once they were around one another.

Noah, that happens with plenty of marriages… that’s why i always work 16 hours a day 🙂

Noah I meant to be facetious, everything is subject to perspective. Most people don’t even tell themselves the truth.

Since this is germaine to the coaching discussion… Their are lies told all of the time; by every one– and some are necessary; the proverbial little white lies. It’s the big lies– and compounded ones– that get one into trouble. For the most part, I believe coaches stay in the “little white” category. And I do not fault them, as players are not 100% honest either– whether it be about commitment, behavior or what have you. This is not a good “business”; what college sports (mainstream) have become.

The same people blasting Petrino for “lying” to them would be blasting him if he actually told the truth. (“Hell yeah I’m looking for a new job! I hate this place!”)

They need to be more exact in their criticism. They’re mad at him for not telling them what they want to hear.

Noah, if you can’t see the problem with how Petrino handled this whole scenario and how it matches his career track record, then you are not going to be swayed. There is a good reason Petrino is getting ripped by the media for how this all came down. I have no problem with him feeling this is not the right job for him, but when the owner gave him an out, he didn’t take. He lied instead. Plus, he didn’t have the guts to even finish out the season. He didn’t meet face-to-face with the team. They were notified with notes taped to their lockers. Truly, a class act all the way.

He should have finished out the season, I agree. I just don’t think that it’s the single largest crime ever committed by a coach (which is how it feels like it’s being portrayed).

Lou Holtz said that quitting with a game left was the only regret he had about leaving the Jets the job.

If I had been Petrino and realized that the NFL job wasn’t for me, I would have told Blank that I was resigning at the end of the season. I would have coached the last three games and I would have called the team together and told them what was happening.

I probably would have taken the next year off to refocus on what I wanted and what I needed and THEN would have tossed my name back in the hat.

But he didn’t do any of those things. Spilled milk. The Falcons weren’t going anywhere this year. They needed a real coach and now they’ve got a head start on the search.

Noah.. just saw your “truth” argument and had a great laugh. I think you and I would have a fun debate back on forth on this. Even in your own argument you lay out the foundation of an absolute truth. When you say “our minds interpret”, you are saying in ultimate truth “we have a mind that interprets”. See once you set that truth.. then you continue your argument to blast any other forms of truth.
Don’t worry.. I have heard the fun arguments about why we can’t say black or white.. or heck even Merry Christmas anymore.. but the problem is you have to have a foundation to even build an argument.
    Ok.. back to sports.
